  • Film director Guillermo Del Toro talks about his latest film "Pan's Labyrinth" with "metromix on CLTV" host Marcus Leshock. "Pan's Labyrinth" is one of the recent classics, a dark horror film that explores the fantasy of a child during the Spanish civil war.
The "Alfonso" discussed in the interview is fellow Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, who was releasing his film "Children of Men" around the same time as Guillermo's movie.

People seem to forget there is peace, violence, happiness, sadness, good and evil in children's lives. This movie clearly draws the line between good and evil. Also that there are consequences to action or inaction. Children understand this. I grew up with this type of movies and they made perfect sense to me. Now, society see children as if they could not understand the world they are living in and try to keep them in a bubble of happiness until it burst, often violently. Understanding good and evil arms the kids with tools to recognize it and to deal with it. This is why there are so many depressed and mentally ill kids and young people, in part because they don't know how to deal with the real world and survive.

Hollywood sucks for not having an interest for movies like these just for its "violence". It's one of those movies true to its concept without safety bumps

I have so much respect for people who grew up speaking one language, but learned English good enough to carry on a conversation with the fact that its a second language being barely noticeable... And to make a film like this, and have it be entirely in Spanish just put Guillermo over the edge for me. One of the best movies I have ever seen, but without sacrificing anything to live up to Hollywood standards.

Thank god he didn´t compensate for the sake of commercial success on this masterpiece.
As my grandfather grew up in the exact same part of Spain being exactly as old as Ofelia, this movie means everything to me. I was able to show him this movie shortly before his passing and it was beyond priceless to be granted a look into his past with him beside me. Apart from that personal fact this movie explodes of symbolism. Its combines so much of this worlds art into one big message. Its dares you to think deeper about the harsh reality of fascism and how important it is to hold on to the child in one self. To me, the most brilliant movie of all time. Guillermo, if you ever read this; i named my daughter Ofelia after your amazing art. I can never thank you enough.

I saw this movie when I was 11 years old and it basically traumatized me. I didn't understand it, but I saw that there was something to understand: watching it felt like looking at the surface of a glassy pond, fathoms deep. I'm 16 now and, while I see more, I still feel like I'm in the presence of dwarfing intelligence. del Toro is a genius and a true artist.

I watched it in middle school and completely missed the meaning. My understanding was that it was a poorly made children’s movie that was too violent, and that Ofelia got a happy ending and all the fantasy was real. No reason to be sad. Rewatching at 16, knowing the meaning, needless to say I ugly cried.

The Brothers Grimm fairytales were not designed specifically to entertain children. Children were not meant to be sheltered gruesome realities of life during that time. Even the water down Disney versions of these fairytales still have some dark moments. I enjoyed Pan’s labyrinth despite the brutality. We always have a choice as to what we perceive.

I find it so ironic that out of all of Guillermo's movies, this has become the most mainstream. I saw a public screening of it at a park a couple of summers and there were families and children and everything. It's weird to think that a movies like Pacific Rim or Hellboy have become Cult Classics but this strange dark fairy tale with subtitles has persevered.

My parent's brought me and my little brother and sister to see this back when it came out. For some reason, even with the R rating, they were convinced it would be like Narnia. I was, saaaaay, 12? Actually I had just turned 13. The funny part is I was the only one who enjoyed it. I really appreciated this movie and my parents just complained that it wasn't what they expected. XD I always wanted to be a film director, so it would make sense that I would appreciate this as a less mainstream movie.

This movie doesn't work unfortunately. The final time that the faun visits her and tells her to bring her brother to him in the labyrinth she informs him that the door is locked to which he hands her a piece of chalk and instructs her to create her own door. Now her ability to create doors by drawing them with chalk is either imaginary or it is real. If it's imaginary then she NEVER leaves the locked room, however, if it IS real then her stepfather should have been able to see the faun that she's speaking with at the end of the film. ☹️
