I thought Borat and Bruno were pretty much the same movie. I don't understand why people act like Borat had some sort of substance to it that Bruno lacked.

Now "Kermode Uncut: Brüno Review" -- which I know you've watched -- IS valuable criticism. Note that Kermode does not essentially criticize the film but rather the producer and basically calls him a hypocrite.
The Bruno in the TV series was brilliant; most notably in that 'Austrian Gay TV' sketch with the 'jocks' on the beach, which might be the funniest sketch I've ever seen. Whereas TV Bruno was a clever, subtle pardoy and sterotype, the Bruno is lowest common denominator stuff. I guess it reperesent the moment SBC disappeared up his own arse.
i preferd borat over bruno, manily cause borat was a much more likable charatcer and was the first and more orginal movie, bruno has its moments, but the end of bruno bugged me, i would of rather had him taking the piss out of the likes of bono and elton john, than them being in on the joke
@zazoudubchimp I almost agree. I'd give Da Ali G Movie 2/10 if I was feeling REALLY generous. It's one of two movies I've walked out of in my life. (The other was Judd Apatow's Funny People.)
@MrJamjam87 You do know that's the oldest cliche in the book right? That is what every 11 year old brat says when they have no argument, "Well if it's so bad then do it better yourself!". No, nobody has to do anything better themselves. Everyone is free to have their opinions and critique the shit out of anything. Otherwise, if you're not a filmmaker yourself, you'll have to like every single movie you see for the rest of your life.
I don't understand how this movie won over any of the well known critics that it has. This guy, Karmode, said that Superbad was a crass and depressingly foul-mouthed movie or something like that. And yet here is Bruno: next to the second Harold and Kumar, probably one of THE MOST depressingly vulgar and disgusting experiences I've ever sat through. I laughed four times and I averted my eyes for the rest of it (not joyously).Elevated garbage. And maybe it's me, but dicks aren't inherently funny:/
Why not see the review? I like most of kermodeandmayo's reviews, and most of the time Kermode is very sharp. However, his review of Bruno (e.g., "I laughed 6 times"... "which is good") is poor and useless. You don't review a candid cam film as a comedy unless it's not a candid cam film per se. Borat had a solid plot with a great introduction, bulk and an ending. It had a coast-to-coast cruising theme, love, betrayal., etc. Did Bruno have those? Kermode doesn't say.
Maybe people shouldn't take Sasha too seriously? Maybe his films are just candid camera sort of sketches? Maybe there's no need to criticize every shit that comes to our cinema.
The film’s issues are the unfocused direction, the film needs more humour & the last 30 minutes becoming boring, however the film’s well acted, well characterised, well scored & stylish. (64%) (3/5 stars) (mixed to positive)

He's absolutely right about the smugness.
Say what you want about Bruno, it was miles funnier than The Hangover.
Instablaster...
My problem with Sacha is that he feels too comfortable punching down.
when has he ever punched down? most of his subjects are public figures

One of the best comedies I have ever seen. Pushed the envelope a little bit too much and offended people...love it.
Yes I remember TV Bruno as just a shallow fashionista dimwit rather than an ubercamp OTT gay joke.
Let's have the Moon review, doc.

Maybe people don't want to watch an hour and a bit of candid camera.
Moon has a limited release unfortunately.

i dont think ive ever counted the amuont of times ive laughed at a film lol
Easier to do if you're not really finding it funny to be fair

He got away with it for years later though.
Bruno was extremely funny on the TV, but the film both sucked and blowed simultaneously.
sacha baron cohen was best on tv. his movies are great in bits but mediocre generally. But his tv shows were fucking amazing,
@guitarreilly
good:)
laughing 6 times is NEVER enough for a comedy.
Kermode laughed six times. Most viewers laughed rather more, as he notes.
Never finished watching this movie, and I've been a SBC fan for at least a few years before Borat. Dreadful.
Borat was great, Bruno was awful.
Maybe people shouldn't take Sasha too seriously?

It’s not as funny as Borat. I enjoyed it and laughed at it, but I don’t think I’d want to rewatch it, the way I could rewatch Borat

a little less funny than borat, but still mostly great throughout. didn't like the ending but what you guna do

A pretty crap film but nowhere near as bad as the dictator
Ali g shite as is Bruno but borat was good.
Mark Kermode laughed 6 times. How can you properly watch a comedy while noting down each thing that makes you laugh? Humour is a sense not a science.
Everything is a science, but I'm not sure what stating the number of times you laughed at a movie has to do with your distinction.
you would think Kermode would be VERY comfortable with a certain degree of smugness
