Ok, there is a lot of confusion in the comments about the fork and the process. This video only applies to the *SR SUNTOUR XCR AIR* suspension fork. If you have ANY other fork, this WILL NOT work. Also, if you are looking to reduce the volume, you need to let all the air out and unscrew the top cap, then add some 80 wt gear oil to the air chamber. Then reassemble the fork. I apologize for the confusion, I will be posting a follow-up a video about these things on this Saturday (9-1-2018). Thank you for your comments!
I realize this video is three years old, but I used a 27mm oxygen sensor socket on the air side and it worked great. They are thin walled sockets. Took the spacer out of my brand new XCR32 LOR air, and added some foam rings to the seals, greased up with sram butter. Fork is silky smooth now.
Great video! You did a really nice job! Bummer, I found out my 29er XCR fork is not extendable beyond 100mm :) But I guess I could still add some oil to adjust the compression curve
Great video... may have to try this out. So not only does this increase your travel by 20mm but should also by theory slacken the head tube angle by a degree or two right?
You are so good bro, you should be working in an actual bike shop and actually training to service $2000 forks. I really wish you get like high end bikes man you deserve it.
i did not use the recommended grease. you're supposed to use bike suspension specific grease but i didn't have any at the time and back then i didn't think it was worth the money to buy something so specific.
Do you know of any way to extend the xcr coil from 100mm to 120mm ? Suntour says it comes in both travels and i ordered the 120 but only 115mm of stanchion is ever visible so I'm trying to figure out how to extend it.
I am not sure how to extend the travel of that one, or if it is even extendable. Also, they may be rounding up in order to market it better. Because you know, *120 millimeters of ultra smooth travel* sounds better than "115 millimeters of travel".
I know this was months ago but If you still haven’t dine anything Im surprised but I seriously doubt you would ever notice the 5 mm difference there anyway thats like 3% off what you wanted. Also bottoming out a few times per ride is fine that just means you’re using all of the fork. Nothing wrong with bottoming out as long as it doesn’t happen all the time.
I jst injured myself due to the air suspension of the fork not having the necessity I've needed😬, from wheel lit absorbed all the impact when i maked the jump and the front wheel lit got removed, good thing i got less injured and the bike got no damaged
Good job! It'd be better on the shocks to use Buzzy's Slick Honey or Suntour Conpanna than Park tool polylube or any general purpose grease. Shock stays smoother for longer!
Thanks! Yeah, I wanted to do this video and didn't have any and didn't to wait for some to come in. I will order some and do it properly once it comes in.
How should i know if i need more or less travel space? When i push down the fork in comes to 30%. But i've heard more travel space you have, more responsible in bike to the ground which means you are slower, am i correct?
If your fork is compressing 30% whilst just sitting on the bike, I would recommend that you add more pressure until you get to about 15-20% compression.
Wel, there wasn't any oil in the fork to begin with, which explains why this fork has no progression, which is why I need to put 150 psi in the fork. I have added oil to the fork since and it runs perfectly. I can have 70 psi in the fork and have a smooth ride without bottoming out even on bigger hits. EDIT: Sorry about the late reply to your question, I did not see the notification until just now.
Suntour and RST entry level forks use just grease in the lowers. That's why most of times a rockshox xc30 coil fork is much smoother than one of these simpler air forks.
IGMTB Hey no problem thanks for the answer! So what I need to do is open the bottom screw on the air side and put 5cc of fork oil in there with a syringe?
Say, does your damper clunk when it fully extends? I just did this to my raidon, and while it's identical air side it's a bit different damper side. Thanks
@@IGMTB Hrm, all was assembled correctly, and the clunk is proportional to how big the spacer is (I cut it to various lengths to test). Look on the left tube of the fork (the one without the lockout ring), if there is a knob that twists but doesn't come off it's probably a coil fork. If there is a thing that comes all the way off to reveal a shrader valve, then it's an air fork.
the piston leak is probably due to the aluminum air vale not being tightened down enough. you could confirm this by pumping the fork full of air and then spraying soapy water around the valve and looking for bubbles. feel free to email me with pictures if you want. Question for ya I have the exact same Suntour cept remote lockout thing is when I let all the air out it doesnt seem as if there is 20mm of travel left.... maybe like 10mm? I know I bought the 100mm....
Sometimes there is too much negative pressure and it's canceling out the positive pressure caused by the air. If the negative pressure is too much it will cause the fork to compress a small amount. This isn't a big deal and can be solved with either more pressure or replacing the negative spring. E-mail me if you have more questions.

@@mightfight Yeah, that is perfectly normal. The amount of travel shown is dependent on how much air pressure is in the chamber. Mine only shows 115mm of travel at the pressure I use. I don't think there is anything wrong with your fork based on what you said about the travel.
@@IGMTB Thank you for all your help that 27mm socket I found out the hard way needs to be thinned walled or maybe just 12 point the 6 point I couldn't fit on the nut.
It's the negative spring, its the one that is located outside of the air chamber and it basically acts as a bit of a cushion for when you top out your fork (when your front wheel comes off the ground) it makes it to where it doesn't slam and create a lot of noise and it also prevents wear. I was a bit confused about it myself until I looked it up and found out what I just typed.
This fork has so much negative compression that you might just need to add more pressure to be able to make use of the extra 20mm. You should recheck your sag and see if this is the case.
@@IGMTB ok thanks. But if I put more pressure in I should take some of the oil out to increase the air volume so I use more of my travel right. (the oil acts as a volume spacer.) Also is there a way to make the negative compression smaller?
no. as far as i know, the xcr air is only available up to 120mm. if the fork in question is not an xcr air then maybe you can, but i dont know how to do it.
Yeah, no problem! I was looking for a video on how to do this and couldn't come across one. I had to call SR Suntour support and the guy I talked to emailed me detailed instructions and even a diagram on how to do it. But I decided to make this video in the hopes that someone else who needed this information wouldn't have to do what I did. Thanks for the feedback!
IGMTB I didn't find anything on this specific fork, just for raidon and epixon. Next month I'll buy a new bike and it comes with this fork with 100mm of travel, but I want to start riding some more aggressive trails here in Brazil. Unfortunately here bikes are expensive as hell, you can buy 1 bike here and with the same amount 2 in USA, not to mention that trail specific bikes almost don't exist around here, people here are all about cross country. I'm getting a GT Avalanche elite, "best value for the price" and swap the crapy brakes and cranks for Deore to match the rest of the groupset and save money for a full suspension in the future.
That's good that you're getting a new bike. I have heard that bikes are more expensive in countries besides the United States, especially in South America. It is also good that you are swapping the brakes, because the low end shimano brakes are pretty un-reliable.
well... i see sooo many similar videos but u know what? my fork does not have those screws at the bottom..all i can do is unscrew top but still i cant get access to the spring
Well, this video is about adjusting the SR Suntour XCR Air, a fork that was made about a year ago. That fork looks like it was made at least a decade ago so it may predate forks having user serviceable internals. If you can, look up some information on the fork and see if it is serviceable and what tools you would need to perform that service. Also, nice photography skills!
@@IGMTB I figured it out, I just took off the lockout cap, twisted the cog underneath all the way open with no weight on the fork, then all the way closed, put the cap back on in the locked position and now it's fine.
i believe the XCR is a cheapo fork below £100, its not worth upgrading. if you want to be a big boy rider you pay big money. i have a carrera kraken and that has XCR forks, i could of saved £100 and got a carrera vengeance and have XCT forks. but i wouldnt have hydrolic brakes or air forks. so it depends what you really want your bike to do. if i was rich i would by a british made ORANGE bike with FOX forks.
yeah if idve had enough money i wouldve made all sorts of different decisions. but I dont have money, and i still hold that this is the best fork you can get for under $200
I've heard this many times, but I'm still unsure of what you're talking about. Do you happen to have a link to the specific product that you'd be willing to share with me?
Hey, that's interesting! I've got XCR 34 AIR LOR 120, and it is slightly too little for me: Can you identify the exact fork a little bit better? I may need to upgrade the fork for more subtlety, but I might save some time with this mod!
@@kingofgodz585 Thank you! So mine is a tad larger, 34. It may not be the same model at all. But I feel it is a bit restrictive, I may need to check if it has some internals to modify!

I’ve been adding spaces and removing one spring the lighter one, on xrc. Add some oil in the air chamber for compression.. wirk on both models too. So big travel and no option for bottom out.. absolutely amazing.. no reason to sped money on any other if lerrn to modify.

voices thank you for the reply, my hardtail has originally come with 80mm and with the Radion it’s at 120 mm right now, 140 would probably be too much of a geometry change right?
@@connormullen6206 There's a good chance your raidon only goes to 120mm, check your manual. Changing from 80 to 120mm will slacken your head tube angle by 2 degrees, but you probably have an XC bike with a step HTA angle so there's plenty of room to slacken it. If you don't like it you can always put the spacers back in. It will make your bottom bracket higher so maybe you'll notice a slight increase in height but I think the benefits of longer travel on the front outweigh this.

That's good that you're getting a new bike. I have heard that bikes are more expensive in countries besides the United States, especially in South America. It is also good that you are swapping the brakes, because the low end shimano brakes are pretty un-reliable.
IGMTB yeah, I had those brakes in other bike, for city riding they're ok but for something more aggressive noway....
well... i see sooo many similar videos but u know what? my fork does not have those screws at the bottom..all i can do is unscrew top but still i cant get access to the spring
Do you know what model your fork is by chance? Keep in mind that this video only applies to the SR Suntour XCR Air fork.
all i know that is "post modern comfy"... here are few pics i made imgur.com/a/xwSicSt
Also, nice photography skills!
thanks for the answer .... I had to drill a hole in plastic plugs to get inside - everything is already lubricated and the bike is like a dream: D

Great video man ! I am tryng to upgrade from xct to xcr air. Finding it hard to get one in the 29er size
Thank you! Maybe I can help with that:

On amazon the air fork with remote lock is for 135$. Is it the real deal?
it says that it is currently unavailable but yes it does seem legit.
@@IGMTB lets hope for the best...i am from India and i need to get that fork here asap... The xct fork lockout has gone kaput with mild off-road use
what is your bike model

NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS AND A ROLL OF PAPER TOWELS!!!!
Does that work for raidon
No here's an excellent guide for that though, ruclips.net/video/T1WAiS6lwpQ/видео.html
So I just did this and now my lockout isn't working..
does it move or is it stuck?
@@IGMTB I figured it out, I just took off the lockout cap, twisted the cog underneath all the way open with no weight on the fork, then all the way closed, put the cap back on in the locked position and now it's fine.
@@kaleb7272 Excellent
you could use some more rebound to make it slower
the rebound control on this fork is mostly a gimmick. it doesnt really work. plus the control knob fell out sometime over the summer.
How to do that in xcr coil fork?
You cant
@@udeanpetot I see too much persons make it already
i believe the XCR is a cheapo fork below £100, its not worth upgrading. if you want to be a big boy rider you pay big money. i have a carrera kraken and that has XCR forks, i could of saved £100 and got a carrera vengeance and have XCT forks. but i wouldnt have hydrolic brakes or air forks. so it depends what you really want your bike to do. if i was rich i would by a british made ORANGE bike with FOX forks.
yeah if idve had enough money i wouldve made all sorts of different decisions. but I dont have money, and i still hold that this is the best fork you can get for under $200
Next time instead of grease, get a jar of sram butter.. your fork will feel 1000times better
I've heard this many times, but I'm still unsure of what you're talking about. Do you happen to have a link to the specific product that you'd be willing to share with me?
Friends, this is do-able with every rockshox fork ever
On my Raidon, there is no o-ring
Different fork, different design and components.
Hey you make good videos but do it more often 😅
Thanks. Ive been in school for about a month and have kind of slacked off. Got a few scripts being written now though!
Well i upped my xcr air from 120-140 and on a hardtail 😂
Must be a different version, mine is only good for 120 mm as stated in the video.
Hey, that's interesting! I've got XCR 34 AIR LOR 120, and it is slightly too little for me: Can you identify the exact fork a little bit better?
I may need to upgrade the fork for more subtlety, but I might save some time with this mod!
@@MrTKorho what do you mean?
@@MrTKorho mines a xcr 32 LOR solo air with 120mm brought up to 140mm
@@kingofgodz585 Thank you! So mine is a tad larger, 34. It may not be the same model at all. But I feel it is a bit restrictive, I may need to check if it has some internals to modify!
100 to 120mm ain't a thang that's a tolerable change in travel and geometry and durability
remove the other spring you will get 140 ^^
You're telling us both to do something on a how to video?
What? I don't understand what you're trying to communicate, please elaborate.
@@IGMTB you're saying we shouldn't do what you're doing in the video. If we shouldn't do it then why are you making a how to video?
@@blewyd Because some people are willing to take the risk of breaking something in order to make it better. Others might be discouraged by the fact they might break something and that this is a really involved adjustment. I am giving a disclaimer so that people know what they're getting themselves into.
@@IGMTB ok now I get it thx
Mine is 140mm successful
Hey, is yours the xcr air 120mm ? Did you extend from 120-140
@@mrjoeybackwheel1473 I’ve had raidon air and xrc air. Both can be modified. The xrc max 159mm maxed and raidon can be set to 180 but sold before try the 180 only 160 tested and is absolutely stable on any jumps.
I’ve been adding spaces and removing one spring the lighter one, on xrc. Add some oil in the air chamber for compression.. wirk on both models too. So big travel and no option for bottom out.. absolutely amazing.. no reason to sped money on any other if lerrn to modify.

I have the same chain lube
No one has the same lube as me, I have my own top-secret formula for lube. That's why my chain falls off so much.
oh
IGMTB I use something very similar to that.
U need some skill to do this. Do it on your own risk
That's what the intro to the video was about.
You need fork lube not grease
That is true, the only reason I used regular grease is because I'm a cheapskate and it works. Albeit, not as well.
Thanks for your video. It helped my extend the travel on my Suntour Raidon XC LO R. The spacers are a little different, see image: imgur.com/a/2DsQ6Y6
voices I have the same air fork, did everything work out ok? He said it wouldn’t work with any other fork, thanks.
@@connormullen6206 Yeah, the imgur link is from when I did it myself. The fork dissembles a similar way, although you pull the air spring chamber out from the bottom instead of the top. There's a few other videos on youtube which shows you how for this fork. Happy to answer any further questions.
voices thank you for the reply, my hardtail has originally come with 80mm and with the Radion it’s at 120 mm right now, 140 would probably be too much of a geometry change right?
@@connormullen6206 There's a good chance your raidon only goes to 120mm, check your manual. Changing from 80 to 120mm will slacken your head tube angle by 2 degrees, but you probably have an XC bike with a step HTA angle so there's plenty of room to slacken it. If you don't like it you can always put the spacers back in. It will make your bottom bracket higher so maybe you'll notice a slight increase in height but I think the benefits of longer travel on the front outweigh this.
voices that is all very true. I made that a little confusing let me explain. My bike is a Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc 29”er. It had originally come with a 80mm fork. I have upgraded everything apart from the rims and the frame it self including the fork to a 120mm SR Suntour Radion I bought it new off of Amazon in 2019, do you think it will have the option to go from 120 to 140? Thanks for all your help also.
