This week on Apple Junkies... Sweet tango comes up short setting up the championship between ambrosia vs honey crisp. Oh, there's a little mention of rye whiskey in this episode too. Can't wait for the next review.
Not gonna lie. If the boys do an Apple Junkies episode for April Fools I'd be here for it.
Dan, you being into apples... try the Sagamore Calvados Finish. Very interesting. Cheers! Btw, honeycrisp is king.
Yea we have a bottle of that in the hut, we both love the heck out of it
I love when Sean gives a note and Dan basically calls him an idiot... only to agree with Sean's note 2 mins later (well partially agree).
I said this last time you started talking about this bottle. STOP. TALKING. ABOUT THIS BOTTLE!
Love, love, love this Rye! I get a molasses note and agree about the slight hint of tobacco. My wife actually thought this was a bourbon when she first tried it due to the rye being so muted by the second barrel. Sagamore putting some real hitters out there.
Glad to see this review pop up. Was thinking of picking this bottle up this week. Definitely will be getting it now. Thanks for the review.
It's cute that Dan thinks "American Vanilla" is a thing...😆
How You Like Then Apples, brought to you by Dan and Sean
If Dan doesn’t get a cosmic crisp by the end of this year, he can’t eat an apple at all next year
Cosmic crisp by far the best apple I’ve had!!
Envy apple for the win
cosmic crisp wildly overrated
This is one of my favorites And I kind of like that people sleep on it. So I know I can always get it! Lol So good.
Damnit, another favorite that is suddenly going to be harder to find ;)
Love the Saggy Double Oak! Also honeycrisp ftw lol, haven't tried the new kiss apples myself. Cheers Junkies.
We just got Sagamore in Ontario, Canada for the first time. Only two options - Signature 83 America Rye and the entry level. Bit spendy up here for low proof rye ($80/$70), which is in the same price range as Alberta Premium Cask Strength.
Been hearing alot about this bottle. Snagging it from Binny's soon !!
The color is actually darker and redder in real life. I love everything about this one - the look, smell, taste and price. Okay, I hate that Sagamore bottle shape.
Just picked up my first bottle of this and (recommended by the staff at Opperman's) and it's absolutely fantastic! I definitely get a molasses aroma in the glass, which I find very pleasing. Drinks super smooth and a little sweet.
Cosmic apples are money. Sugarbee apples too. Both beat the Honeycrisp.
I really wanted to here about the new honeycrisp, let me know when that video is released.
After enjoying the BJ Swordfish Oil Sagamore pick, picked up this Double Oak as a gift. Got to taste = GREAT Stuff. Lots of balanced flavors.
How dare you talk bad about American Vanilla! What are you a foreigner?
1:43 Sean-Hint of Tobacco, Dan- No there's none .....3:26-4:10 Dan Talking about the Tobacco... Dan Needs Sleep.... His nose is very tired.... Love You Guys.... Even Sean. Have a Wonderul Week.
Lemon popyseed miffins!!! Yes! Sean you are NOT wrong!!
sagamore does a great job finishing, try the port finish, great substitute for a mwnd when you run out of it. I have to be disappointed by any of their products.
Yea the calvados and port are both fantastic
Eh…. Way too much dill for my taste.
First Kiss is better than Sweet Tango.
Thank you for the apple review
A great friend of mine gave me a bottle of Sag dbl oak over a year ago...such a dam awesome bottle!!! Apple crisp RULE !!!
Dan you talking about a Ramon Chavez?! 👀 Loveeeee that knife!
I thought straight meant 2 yrs minimum, not 4…
But it's not age stated so if it's straight and non age stated it's a minimum of four
Man knob creek twice barreled rye is great!!!!
Yep. Tasty stuff.
Isn't the age requirement for a "straight whiskey" only 2 years?
Yes
Yep. 2 years for straight. 4 years for NAS.
Cant say i want bread and butter pickle in my whiskey. Havent seen these in a while as they were discontinued locally
You want to try something fantastic? Try this mix 1 dram of Sagamore cast strength and 1 dram of Sagamore double oaked 😘
That is EXACTLY what I did. Absolutely amazing!
Was literally just telling my kid how honeycrisps are the best apple out there. I'll have to try the rye roo.
Great idea going back to revisit readily available stuff you really like but just didn't do videos on before. More please!
I love when strokewagon convos bleed into BJ videos 😂
Wait until you try Sagamore’s 8-year!
I had a bottle of this that somehow managed to come open (poor packing) in my checked bag a couple months ago. It was a sad day.
Found this bottle at Costco a while back. Definitely enjoyed it
I LOVE Sagamore products!!!
Noble Oak. Double Oak is also very nice. Have you guys tried it yet? Also very affordable at about $35
Haven't had that yet
What is this outro song?
Apple Junkies has a good ring to it.
Have you guys thought about reviewing any of the Old Pepper Cask Strength ryes? I think they're pretty darn good for their price point and availability
Totally agree, those are delicious.
We have one in the hut that someone donated and we both like it.
There is a distinct lack of apple content on the RUclipss
🤣
The comparison to Old Forester 1910 is very accurate. It’s like a rye version of 1910.
We need some knife reviews 🤘🔪
Two words: cosmic…crisp
You guys are the Abbott and Costello of whiskey reviews.
More like dumb and dumber 😆
Donuts 🍩
Usually I'm with your guys taste profile, but not with this one. I was really looking forward to trying a bottle of this after all the positive reviews. It's been such a disappointment. It's so underwhelming for me. It's not bad whiskey, but it's just so plane jane for me. I'd expect this to be a $25 bottle, as I'd much rather have the old forestor Rye over this. I love Rye's too.
Fun review! ALL Sagamore Spirits are great! For the record nothing beats a Pink Lady apple:)
Doesn’t it mean it’s aged at least 2 years by the “straight” designation, not 4?
Yeah but it's not age stated so if it's not age stated and it's straight it's at least 4
Okay, another good video guys. One note, the brightness in that was off. Looked like you're filming outdoors. Keep it dark.. hides those wrinkles, 😂
Took the Sagamore distillery tour this past summer - they claim to use TWO mash bills for their Rye: 1 95/5 and one closer to a 70/30 that are then blended. I asked them if they were both distilled in Maryland, knowing they used the MGP 95/5 and were told that BOTH of them are distilled in Maryland. Don't know how long its been distilled here though.
Hey Eric - what's currently on shelves is a blend of 95/5 and then 52 rye/43 corn/5 malted barley that was contract distilled with MGP. Both blends have been distilled in MD since 2017 and some of the MD juice is beginning to go into bottles now.
@@brettbauer1345 Thank you for the clarification!
Dan, it's awesome when you take charge!!! "sagamore double oak..Rip it!"🤣🤣🤣
@5:14 truer words have never been spoken. What does imitation vanilla even mean?
When I neck poured this it was a straight dill pickle bomb. I loved it but I'm guessing that's going to go away once it opens up.
Dan, there’s a tattoo removal place in Big Rapids called “No Regerts”.
Just got this bottle last week. 2 pours from it and mine is super oak flavored. Young Tannic Oak!! I will let it sit this week and jump back into this weekend.
Haven't known myself to like Rye but Double Oaked yes. Gotta give this a try
Just got bottle in DE $44.99 . Looking forward to trying
One of the best DO products on the market
Agreed
Great pour! Same for their Tequila barreled! ❤️🥃👍🏻
Picked up my first bottle of this today and it’s everything I needed but never knew I wanted.
Had to find this in Ky, couldn’t find in Ohio this is a true hitter bottle !
Have a private barrel of their cognac finished rye which is also pretty awesome.
We did a whiskey tasting that was supposed to be themed around "fall is coming" and this was the bottle that everybody agreed upon was probably the most "fall". Absolute hitter
Heck yea, what were the others?
@@BourbonJunkies JDSBBP but that particular expression was super minty. Also did pikesville (after the sagamore) and a few others.
I love both pikesville and the JD, guess I’m getting the sag asap
Has to be said... Sean showed good restraint in this episode. And I'm not just saying that to get back on his good side.
This sounds like one hell of a Autumnal whiskey
It is perfect for a nice cool day
@@BourbonJunkies That was all I needed to hear to add a bottle to my collection. I am not really a fan of ryes but this might have just converted me. That toasted vanilla marshmallow note is amazing especially with a little mint in there.
The mackinaw peaches Jerry! The mackinaw peaches!
I'm down for apple talk.
Have you guys heard of Found North whisky? Started during the pandemic they source+blend older Canadian whiskey, mainly rye and the first two batches put out look really interesting.
We have not
I keep looking for this in mid-Michigan, but haven’t seen it yet. Is it consistently up by you guys?
I think Dan bought the last bottle from around us
Clearly NOT a Chavez. Did you get a new Pro Tech Operator?
Yea I've had that for a bit, was a gift from Jeremy Siers
Humm, Pikesville or this for $50? I only have $50.
Sagamore DO all day
Any chance you guys can get your hands on The Senator Barrel Strength Rye? Seems to be getting very favorable reactions.
We have a bottle, Dan really likes it and I'm like warm on it
Would Dan still likey honeycrisp the most if he blinded it against the sweet tango?
He'd double guess it and put a pink lady first
Envy apples are great
My wife and I love the angels envy rye, how does this compare? I really want to find it
For sure not a sweet, drinks more like a bourbon honestly
I feel like I keep hearing people say "straight whiskey" means 4 years, but no, that's bottled in bond. "Straight whiskey" just means 2 years.
That's true, straight whiskey is a minimum of 2 ywars. If it's aged less than 4 years though it has to have an age statement. So it being straight and non age stated means it's over 4 years
@@BourbonJunkies Oh, right. 👍
Great, another one I can’t get in VA ABC stores. Welp, guess I need to make a trip across the River to MD. THANKS for the review, guys.
I live in VA, too. I have found this bottle in DC and Delaware shore several times, in case you don’t find in MD. But, it’s modeled after MD equestrian history, so I’m certain you’ll find it somewhere. Also, Kevin Plank of Under Armour fame owns it, so I’d be shocked if it’s not in MD stores.
@@willfrix1455 A co-worker lives in MD so I asked to pick one up for me next time he’s on the hunt. He says he sees them all the time up where he lives near Laurel.
$48 at Total Wine here in Phoenix.
Bought one earlier this year I believe, after watching one of your vid's that featured it. Still have about a fifth of it left. Think I'm going to polish it off soon (during BJ's Livestream 🥃😎👍) so I can get another bottle.
I've tried 15-20 different Rye's over the last couple years. This bottle is easily in my top 3.
What are your other favorite eyes? I've decided that Sagamore Double Oaked will be my next purchase.
@@Jbroker404 In addition to the Sagamore Spirit Double Oak, in no particular order these are my Rye go-to re-buys:
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel
Wild Turkey 101
Woodford Reserve
Johnnie Walker (yes, JW has a Rye)
Knob Creek Single Barrel
High West Double Oak
Hey, guys,
I'm sure you know who owns Sagamore Spirit.
Scott Yeates?
@@BourbonJunkies sorry, guys - Kevin Plank - founder of Under Armour
French Vanilla on point, first couple drinks from the bottle I was so upset, but after it had some air for a bit holy moly did the deep flavors pop out.
you guys met in college or grew up on the same street??...it's obvious you guys have been friends forever...I'd hate to see an apple come between you after all that time...
You're absolutely correct! They're twins born from different parents.
Great review. This is an amazing bottle, to me it destroys other double oaked bottles like OF 1910, WR Double Oaked and EC Toasted Barrel. I did a blind tasting with 5 toasted barrel / double oaked bourbons and rye’s and this was 2nd place. Old Pepper Distillery does a fantastic barrel strength toasted barrel rye, also MGP, that was 1st place for me.
Oh, I’ve gotta try this. I like rye as a change from corn.
Whew as much as I love this bottle I'd have a tough time putting it ahead of 1910 or Woodford. Different profiles though
