Just saw your latest video and had to find your Sagamore Dbl Oaked video. This stuff is soooo good. It’s shop class, burnt pine board on the nose. When you get a 2x4 that you need a little more time to cut though and you burn the wood. That’s the nose with some sweetness. This was one of my first “must have at all times” bottles. So glad I found this review.
Perfect proof changes over the course of the evening. I like to start around 90, and then by drink 2 or 3 I can handle up to 120-130 proof. You have to acclimate the taste buds with a lower proof and work your way up.
This Sagamore double oak is harder to find up here in northern IL. I've had my eye out for it as I've heard good things. I have a Sagamore Barrel Select store pick that is really good. Another great vid!
For the longest time it felt like Sagamore wasn’t distributed here. Then it finally came in at the larger stores in the area. Here’s to hoping they continue to expand distribution.
I've not had a bad Sagamore yet but Double Oak is the clear winner among their standard products. It is fantastic (and luckily, pretty easy to get in Michigan). $60 is a deal.
Love the reaction to the Sagamore D.O. Rye. Glad you pointed me to this video after my initial comment on the other video. Similar experience for me. Not typically a huge rye fan, but I'd heard good things so I grabbed a bottle when I found it in a store I don't typically visit because I'd never seen it on the shelf. Big, big fan. Found a bottle of Rare Breed Rye today. Ready to get into that for the first time. Cheers to you both.
I just picked up this bottle for 55 (no tax) almost all because of Erin's reaction in this video! 😂 Typically, I don't like ryes (or at least I thought I didn't) but Sagamore is really winning me over with some of the samples I received of their expressions.
Love your channel. Ate dinner than poured Sagamore full proof store pick. Turned in to you and watched as you raved about Sagamore. All I have tried are great. Please continue you wonderful style of channel. Listen to your wife she has great taste. And I love Rare Breed also. Continue to have fun!
No Sagamore distribution in my area BUT my good friend in Virginia just recently sent me a bottle of the Double Oak. A fantastic rye, my current favorite in the category. Excellent sipper, but also makes a great old fashioned. Looking forward to some blind comparisons.
This is one of my absolute favorites! I think the price is perfect for what you get . I pay $59 in RI and don't complain. Delivers so much. Discovered it early last year. Loves watching this. That was my reaction first try
I started out with 80 proof stuff, because I only knew two names - Jim Beam and Jack Daniel's. But experimentation naturally brought me to stronger whisky, and I got to the point where I preferred 90 proof and above. These days I'm getting closer and closer to deciding that as a rule, I want 100 proof or better. There are exceptions, of course - Woodford Reserve, for instance, or Elijah Craig, or Bulleit. I'm really inexperienced with rye, but I'm experimenting. Right now I have Bulleit rye and regular Sagamore Spirit, and I find that while I prefer bourbon, they're pretty good. But Sagamore gets their juice from MGP - at least my bottle says it was distilled in Indiana.
I have been a fan of Sagamore for some time now. Went on a bit of a purchase bender when I started with them and picked up the Cask Strength, Cask Strength Barrel pick, and this Double Oaked. Enjoy them all, but of the three the Double Oaked is my favorite. Great bottle\label designs too. I enjoyed seeing your reactions to it. It is always fun to see you two get really excited about something. Keep up the great content...cheers :)
Thanks so much, Russ! The blind tasting format isn't always conducive to us getting excited about things, because so many pours come across pretty standard when you remove the influence of the brand and label, but it definitely is a ton of fun when something surprises us. And as a big bonus, the bottle and label on Sagamore is definitely great as you mentioned.
I have a bottle of the Sagamore Double Oaked, Sherry finish, Rum finish and cask strength rye whiskeys. All are damn good with Double Oaked and Sherry finish being my favorites.
Will have to try some Sagamore Rye Double Oak ! Sounds wonderful ! Agree that it's all subjective. I'm a "flavor" guy as well... Go with what you enjoy 🥃
Great episode guys. I just picked up a bottle of Sagamore double Oak and now I’m even more excited to try it. I’m drinking the Sagamore cask strength tonight and I absolutely love that bottle. You’re right that proof doesn’t always matter but for me personally I think the higher proof or cast strength options of certain brands do tend to be better especially this one!! Cheers guys and keep up the great work🥃🥃
This was a hard one. I'm all about flavor. Which we are led to believe high proof has more flavor. For most part yes. But quality products regardless proof I find to be good regardless proof. There is a flavor and proof for time of year, your mood, who sharing with, etc. Lots options
Spot on, Thomas. We love to taste blind to remove as many outside favors as possible but it’s hard to deny how much your mood and setting can influence what tastes great to you (or not). There’s a ton of factors at play for sure!
I am definitely going to try this. But for today, we went on a limb last week and got Riverset Rye. It’s distilled in Memphis (where my wife and I met) and it’s B & R Distillery (Bridget and Ron😂) and tomorrow is our 20th anniversary so hopefully this one (@$40 or so) won’t let us down! Cheers!
The Sagamore DO hit my market on I think Tuesday, and I searched for some reviews, and this popped up with a couple of equally positive reviews. As it wasn't obtainable on first view, my main takeaway was originally being led to the All Things Whiskey Wild Turkey episode....and the John Rich house surprise. On bottle crack, I agree with all reviews, but even look forward to it opening up. On proof, I look at my stuff, and other than this new bottle, my 1910, and a Buffalo Trace pick, and 100 proof seems to be my floor, but as the lady in big bourbon news yesterday, Jackie Zykan, was saying in a podcast in the development of 1910 (she picked the 93 proof), that 93 was the right, best-tasting proof for the bottle.
Great points as per the usual David! We’re with you on 100 pretty much being there floor, but a well crafted product is a well crafted product regardless of the proof point. Sagamore Rye Double Oak and 1910 are two perfect examples!
Saw all of the Sagamore products and asked the store manager her thoughts on which two to buy. “Buy two of the Double Oak; don’t save it for a special occasion. Drink it just because you can.”
Always love seeing you guys finding the stuff you love! Especially the available stuff. This is one I know of but haven’t tried. I tend to have tastes similar to Erin’s, so I’ll definitely pick this one up. Keep it up! Greatest reviewers in the ‘verse.
I've got a bottle of this, will have to pop the cork soon. Like you said, this is widely available at ~$60. I've pretty much written off anything below 90 proof and really prefer 100 and up.
We're not far off from that same basic stance, but we do get surprised fairly often (especially with international whiskeys). In American whiskey we've been quite surprised by the flavor in this Sagamore and in 1910, and on the more allocated end we've been really impressed with the 1792 Aged 12 Years and the Wild Turkey Cornerstone 17 Year samples we've been fortunate enough to try.
Sagamore Double Oak is fantastic. Sag is owned by Kevin Plank of Under Armour fame, so it is not a “fly by night” operation. Also, Maryland ryes are traditionally on the sweet side while Pennsylvania ryes tend to be spicy.
Sagamore is super underrated.. their store picks (as of now) are a lot of times 7-7.5 year mgp at 110 proof . I helped pick one recently and it was 🔥 7.5 year
Maryland was in olden times big on rye grain production and that agriculture went down. I understand that Sagamore procures it's rye grain currently from Maryland where obviously the state's rye history has been pleasantly resurrected. So being a non sourced product from one distillery in the literal sense of that word, lends cred to the brand in my view. I have only bought their entry bottle thus far and I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was. Next stop for me ... double oaked. I need me some pancakes & maple syrup ... doncha know?
I really want to try the Sagamore Spirit DO. I've had the bottle in my hands a few times, and keep putting it back. I wanted to taste it first because I haven't liked other double oaked products in the past, such as Woodford Reserve and to an extent 1910, although 1910 doesn't completely turn me off. Might have to finally just pull the trigger on it. Plus, it's a damn good looking bottle.
I’m in Maryland. We’re lucky to have Sagamore everywhere up here. The cask strength is legit fantastic. It’s up there with Proof and Wood Senator and others like that. This is still likely MGP rye mashbills blend tho. Sagamore is harvesting their own grains and distilling on location but just released their first bottled in bond rye. The double Oaked and cask strength are still likely sourced. I just tried a rum finished Sagamore and it’s really good. Would prefer it at a higher proof but the flavor is really good.
@@stephenbrady916 yes. The bottled in bond is for sure their distillate. That’s the only one I know of the at’s 100% Sagamore start to finish. They might be adding some of that into their regular release blends now. Hopefully they can keep a similar flavour profile in all of their releases. The Maryland raised grains will probably bring some subtle differences tho. Maybe it’ll end up being even better.
You’re so very right, the proof is in the pudding (flavor). Higher proofs do tend to offer more flavor, but are not guaranteed to do so. Have you done a head to head matchup with Widow Jane 10 year vs Russell’s Reserve 10 year? If you haven’t, drop by Clarksville TN, look me up, and you can have samples from my stash. We could also meet at the liquor store, and I could buy you a bottle of each.
That's super kind, James! Next time we head up that way to visit family and drop by Mulligan's or Bill's we'll let you know. That's a head to head we definitely need to enter into our head-to-head blind sample pool.
Their Double oaked Rye was my first taste of a Rye. It smells delicious but has a flat dark beer note that didn't taste good to me. My first pour in my journey that was hard to finish. I really wanted this to be good. Learning is part of it and Ryes may not be for me.
According to my alcoholic family, breakfast is the most important drink of the day. But in all seriousness, the only time I'll try a spirit in the morning is when tasting a spirit new to me. The palate is a lot cleaner in the morning and you can often pick up a lot of aromas and flavors you couldn't discern after a day of eating spiced foods and drinking strong flavored drinks like cola, tea and coffee.
I recently bought this, and I really want to like it more than I do, but man do I get a strong dill note on the palate. Its like oaky pickles. Just, why?
There is no perfect proof point for everything or everyone. Every whiskey is unique and drinks best at a certain point based on it's unique taste profile. Personally i typically prefer 100 pf and up but certain things Might drink better in the 90 -100 range .
In “Other Stuff” we mentioned the Po It Up podcast, but since this filming they have rebranded to All Things Whiskey.

Double Oaked is the best sagamore product in my opinion. Lucky enough to live in Md and it’s everywhere. My criticism of them is pricing.
Love this bottle! Bought a backup after first tasting. Think this is my favorite rye
That Sagamore Double Oak Rye is FANTASTIC! I took a sip and slapped my momma
It definitely qualifies as "slap yo momma" good. 😂
Just got the SS double oaked and it’s excellent! Nose and palate exactly as described.
Just saw your latest video and had to find your Sagamore Dbl Oaked video. This stuff is soooo good. It’s shop class, burnt pine board on the nose. Another awesome vid from you guys. My favorite Sagamore is the sherry finish, but all of their bottles are good.

We do plan to try more of their offerings but this is a definite winner and would be hard to beat for the money in our book.
One of my favorite ryes!!! If you can find it, grab the Sagamore Spirit Calvados Finish. My favorite Sagamore.
Love the reaction to the Sagamore D.O. Rye. Glad you pointed me to this video after my initial comment on the other video.

Sagamore DOR is damn good bottle and it comes in a very nice bottle.
Their bottles are crazy cool. We didn't mention it but there's something to be said for that.

Haven't seen this one yet but I do have their 8 year rye sourced from MGP and it's awesome. If you see it, get it!

Maybe distillery trip time? Sounds like their facility would be an awesome stop!
Hmm...log cabin and pancake syrup. Someone should market that. I bet it would sell well.
If memory serves, Sagamore is owned by the boss of Under Armor. Baltimore, MD.
They are! Or at least they were, before selling this past year to a larger group. They're definitely doing great things at Sagamore!

WHile i can NOT argue against the First Couple of Bourbon, i would say anything above 65% (130 proof) would suffice !
We do like us some big proof, especially when it’s well balanced.

It certainly blew us away (pun intended). Cheers and thanks for watching Thomas!

Interesting. Josh is extremely sensitive to pickle juice and anything remotely adjacent. We didn’t get that on this at all, but all palates differ.
My friend didn't taste it until I suggested it. Don't tell Josh. The power of suggestion might rear the pickles ugly head.
