"Not worth the price" was the slogan for bourbon in 2022. So many overpriced, underwhelming bottles.
There were some hitters and a lot of strikeouts. Knob Creek 18 30 year anniversary was actually worth $175, Calumet 16 was well worth $150 and I found an entire case of old Brown-Forman Early Times Bottled in Bond for $265.
My new mantra has been chase nothing. So many turds in 2022.
My bourbon quest now is not chasing the expensive allocated stuff, but trying to find the tastiest, most bang for the buck whiskey.
THAT seems more rewarding to me now.
@@whodey59 I’ve been hitting Barrell up more and more lately at $80 a bottle vs these others that are $100+ also controversial because of the Dickel but the Bardstown Discovery bottles are still good at $130 in my area.
@BooshkiiBomb123 For me, it's hard to think of any whiskey over $100 being a great "bang for the buck" pour.
Is a Bardstown Disco for $130 really 2x better than an OF 1920? Probably not.
I'm trying to find those great bottles under $65 now.
As a huge Willet lover, I can’t begin to tell you how disappointed I have been lately with the absurd pricing on many of their bottles.
The pricing is bullshit. Willett isn't made by the hands of God. Ugh.
My local liquor store was selling Eagle Rare for $100/bottle, and Blanton's at $150. Bourbon prices just keep getting crazier and crazier.
Blanton's all day for 60 in Idaho lol
It's nauseating and completely trend-driven. When I got into bourbon back in 2008, it was so chill ad affordable. Rip Van Winkle was collecting dust at $60...
I hope the giant upside down glen podium sticks around. The bottle flip mishaps will only get more catastrophic.
You should have taken 1.5-2oz from each bottle and made an infinity bottle of the “Worst Whiskey.” You should do the same for the “Best” ones too. Would be a cool viewing.
I like this idea!!
Mad respect to the person that put the Smirnoff Ice on the wall... My eye continually went to it and giggled every time I noticed it throughout the vid.
I’m a firm believer in decanting Elijah Craig Barrel Proof & Single Barrel picks. It helps so much.
I slowed way down on buying in 2022. Just so much stuff at insane prices. Wt 101 still exists for $22 here
The economy slowed me down.
Bench Mark single barrel here. Miss my eagle rare and stagg Jr. Bench mark isnt an eagle rare but its tasty and cheap in this stupid price bourbon market
@@claytonblachly4031 honestly id take benchmark full proof over eagle rare any day
Dan your taster is broken MM BRT 1 & 2 are phenomenal
I tried the 02 and wasnt impressed in any way.
Love the list my A122 wasn’t bad and I bought all out of the same case so fingers crossed on future bottles I open, my biggest disappointment was Bluegrass High Rye Cask. It was a 2+ year whiskey so I didn’t expect those deep and complex notes of older whiskey but for $65/70 it was almost unpalatable. It has been on the shelf for a while though so I may come back to it in the future but if you guys find it steer clear I did buy it from I liquor store up here in Michigan.
Great channel. Actual meaningful commentary is very refreshing here on WhiskeyTube.
I have a Hidden Barn Batch 04 that I love. That being said, I love bready, crafty bourbon. Never got to try the earlier batches but I'm excited to see what Jackie cooks up
I'm at the point of only buying good sub $40 bottles for a while. The allocated prices just keep going higher and higher.
I'm with you there. Tired of looking for something new and seeing $80 and more for some new label with no age statement.
plenty of solid consistent bottles in that $30-$50 slot
Agree on the hidden barn. Hopefully future bottles will be better. Glad I didn't get the repeal 6, even happier I still have a bottle of repeal 5! I thought both BRT bottles were good. Totally different imo.
Thanks guys!
I love that you did the worst bourbons video on top of the oversized Glen. Such a perfect combo!
I think 2022 will be remembered as the year many distilleries released a lot of overpriced mediocre to bad whiskey. And even more brands and grifters trying to capitalize on the whiskey boom released even worse overpriced whiskey. There are some gems but there were so many turds it was too hard to find those gems.
Thank you guys for the New Riff malted rye recommendation. I never heard of it until your review and now it’s one of the best I’ve ever tried.
Loving your videos! ECBP A122 was the first I bought of this series and man was I disappointed. It was hot, burned my throat, and tastes like chemicals. However after about a month it opened up to a vanilla, caramel, Crackerjack peanuts and no longer hot! I went on a mission to find others and found b520, c920, c921, b522, c922, and recently a123 and I love them all!
The JD bib that was put out a couple years ago was at duty free locations and on Military bases, not just a travel exclusive.
I could find it on Fort Lewis for 33 the year it came out, now about a year and a half later it has bumped up to 44, but I can still find it every time I go on base. I 100% agree that it one far better than the bonded that came out this year!
For 30/1L I was not mad at the Kirkland, and I thought the BRT 02 was good stuff, but I got it for 55 before tax.
Great video guys, cheers
Hello from JBLM!
@@WoodrowWoods2007 hey what's up man, I'm just north of you in Lakewood, subscribe to the channel and keep in touch. We pretty regularly have new reviews coming out and other stuff going on.
@@NorthWestBourbon subscribed!
1000% agree with the MWND inclusion. The price hike and lower quality compared to last year, plus so many other amazing port finished ryes, is making MWND a future pass for us.
So glad I still have an act 9 sitting around and lucky enough to have an unopened act 5 still. Its wild how underwhelming this year's release was compared to previous releases. Especially considering MWND has traditionally been one of my favorites.
I’m thrilled I never came across it before this because I totally would’ve bought it. But all the talk lately is that it’s just not worth it.
@@aprilbrown8081 I balked at the price increase. If it had still been $99, I would have bought it without hesitation (and probably regretted it). But at the new price, and knowing that as each year passes it's set to have less MGP and more of their own private stocks blended in, I think I'll never buy another bottle ever again.
I got 2 of my MWND for $92. I think the taste is incredible. But I also didn’t try any other Act.
MWND A10...I bought a shot of it at a whisky bar and it was good, but yeah not worth the price or the hunt so I'm glad I only spent $25 to get that out of my system. This one was actually really close to the Sagamore Sherry aged rye which is a great buy at $70!!
This is a nice format for you guys. It's nice to see two guys disagree according to their own preferences which is a nice reminder to all of us that it just depends.
Why do I get the feeling that "not worth the price" will also be a theme in 2023?
Midwinter 10 quietly showed up at my local Costco for $90something+tax. Didn’t meet my expectations but didn’t hurt as bad as it would’ve at retail + allocated markup elsewhere. Whiskey consumers are getting stung from just about all angles of the whiskey industry and there’s nothing we can do about it until supplies start to catch up. And even still - who’s to say the industry won’t still behave like any other cartel.
The BRT-01 & 02 are both everywhere in western KY right now. $65-$70. I didn't mind the Knob Creek 18 year price, worth it. The Booker's Kentucky Tea was so off profile that it was worth the $90 for once. Calumet 16 was good at $150. I liked BRT-01 a lot more than 02, but wasn't mad that I bought it. It's a nice contrast. Thanks to Sean, I rediscovered old Early Times BIB and found an entire case of it for $265. Definitely drinks way older that it should. Have you all tried any of the Lost Lantern juice? I believe it's sourced from Starlight in Indiana.
Is bookers usually the same stuff with a different label?
I just picked up a bottle of ET BNB(Saz Bottled). I've never had the BF bottle version (plastic cap) I still love the Saz bottle version. I would love to grab the BF bottle version. I'm patiently wating on the Saz distilled and bottle version. Great video.
Haven't been able to get my hands on a BRT-01. But have been loving my BRT- 02 so far.
New to the channel. However I KNEW I was in the right place when I heard Dan say “ we had this much of it in the parking lot” 😂
Ouch- the Makers BRTs this year I thought were super strong for their price point. Regardless, the -01 was way better than -02, but to call it undrinkable kinda hurt me a little bit
So appreciate you guys and the rest of whiskey tube for giving your reviews. I loved Remus 5 was going to jump on 6 until I saw the reviews. So thankful I didn’t drop that cash on 6.
6 is actually really good. 5 is better but we did a blind and 6 was only slightly edged out when our bias was removed.
Thanks guys. As a novice it's great to get your perspective.
BRT-02 was easy to find (for me)
$59.99.
And VERY tasty.
Not sure what's up with these two guys. They seem to have VERY STRONG negative opinions about two popular bourbons, the BRT-02 and Early Times. Their hate for them seems oversold to me. Maybe a "lets appear unbiased for the channel and hate on something popular" business decision?
@@WoodrowWoods2007 To be fair, they have access to the old Early times to be able to compare. Not sure about the brt-02
@@WoodrowWoods2007 their disappointment is specific to the newer batches of Early Times. The previous versions that we all loved so much were Brown-Forman stocks, aged at Brown-Forman warehouses and bottled at Brown-Forman facilities.
These newer bottles were only distilled by B-F, everything else has been done by Sazerac (Buffalo Trace), and the quality has suffered. I hate my Buffalo Trace version and won't ever buy another Early Times bottle (unless I find another older Brown-Forman version)
I have no problem with brt-02, that's specifically on the list because of Dan
Yeah, I actually prefer the Makers BRT-02 over regular Makers. Replace the BRT-02 with Penelope Barrel Strength.
Haven't tried most of these but appreciate calling out these silly 'ltd' prices. And you're out of your minds on EC A122. It's fantastic.
Remus 6 was a pleasant surprise to me, it was findable compared to 5 and is good. Top two disappointments for me were Birthday Bourbon and King of Kentucky, both fell below flat compared to the hype, they were ok at best.
Jack Daniel's Bonded is amazing. I just had some this evening. It is worth the price. It is far better than most other brands of bourbon or whiskey.
I was laughing when you were talking about the Lost Monarchs. Using the same logic I use with Old Fo 1920. “How many 1920’s could I have gotten for what I paid for ______?”
I use to literally equate everything to how many early times I could get
Great video, and love the channel, one bit of constructive criticism. Audio has been a bit off lately. New mics maybe? Just thought I’d pass that along. Keep cranking out the awesome content.
I liked brt02. Preferred it to 01 significantly. They were findable in WA
Really cool that you are doing the close ups on the fundraiser shelves!!!!!
Hell yeah!
Agree. Those shelves are SICK! 👏🏼
I love this video!
I am such a fan of ECBP however, the A122 was so disappointing.
I thought a122 was very much a step in the right direction personally. Felt like a good old fashioned ecbp. Opened up great
Sean going off on Early Times was hilarious!
He is not alone.
Right there with you on ardbeg hypernova. Octamore 13.3 is delicious but expensive as well
Love high west, favorite company their stuff is really good. But I think they just crossed a turning point where I'm over them based on price on how they're seemingly dropping limited stuff with a super premium price tag just to do it, and they aren't slowing down. You have the bourye price hike and mwnd price hike like yall said, then they dropped encore, then prisoners share out of no where, and like a month or two later there's labels floating around of them doing cask strength limited releases. Which cool for dropping new stuff but their problem is good whiskey but too much money, and they keep going up. Wouldn't surprise me to see a yky return for 275. Rant over lol
This is my favorite committee release by Ardbeg and I did like the ppm, had this with the Octomore 13.1 and Laphroaig CS batch 012 over the holidays and I loved them all, getting back to Ardbeg, yes Corryvreckan is their best release, but the ppm was really high in my bottle of Hypernova and it just gave Ardbeg a nice new refreshing profile, which I definitely embrace.
I just watched Sean's heart break in that moment before he put that Early Times on the stand. He looked SO hurt!!!
Just an illusion, everyone knows that undead vampires have no heart!
I have tried about half and would agree on everything but the MM. I enjoyed it for a 65 dollar bottle. Good stuff though! I have a hidden barn batch one and every review has scared me to open it.
Just picked up Hidden Barn Madeira Cask finish Batch 1 and it’s fantastic!
Fully agree on the A122 ECBP. B522 was maybe the most one-note ECBP I've had but A122 just wasn't good! I think I'm done buying and chasing ECBP for a bit. I still have A121 and it still holds up.
Still like Jack BIB but I never had that old version so I didn't have anything to compare to.
Agreed.
Man, if you could tell me where Maker's 46 CS is findable, that'd be great. Haven't seen one in TX ever.
Oh nice i also found a Russell's pick at Meijer! Did you find yours in Michigan by any chance?
Good video guys - cheers
I guess I had 2 real disappointments this year. Never seeing Weller 12 under &250, I can’t, across it and got for $150.00 so I pulled the trigger. At $50, it would have even okay, but the short finish on a 12 year, just taught me a lesson. 2nd bottle, many people loved it, Sagamore Sherry Finish. I just don’t get it, I enjoy Sagamore products, this one just wasn’t my jam. Cheers
Ive watched this video about five times already. You guys are the best. You could say you hate every single bottle I love and I still would be ride or die. 2023 going to be a great year to be a Bourbon Junkie. Cheers Guys
So we had 9 people in our camp for bear season this year. I brought a bottle of the Makers BRT-02, Calumet 16 (my favorite), Woodford 118, and George Dickel BiB. I asked what they liked best, and the Makers won Hands down. I really liked it as well. The Mocha Spice one they did this year was also great.
Yea Dan's wrong on that bottle
You could make a pretty gnarly drinking game on Bourbon Junkie videos with the phrase "here's the thing"
Sean shines when it requires being a germogen. I love Willet, but 2022 was absolutely a year to forget. Great video and HNY.
I didnt buy many new bottles in 2022 just a lot of old favs. I dont know what happened with the elijah craig barrel proof a122 but on vacation (summer of 22) i bought a bottle of elijah craig private barrel, barrel proof (65ish%) around the $100 mark and i thought it was phenomenal
Put the saz Early Times BIB in a blind. Its not that different now and its still awesome.
We did an immediately found it lol
The only reason I'll agree with you on the Hypernova is because it is a really, really terrible bourbon...but it's only a terrible bourbon because it's scotch. It absolutely blows the recent Scorch, Ardcore, and Fermutation releases away (I did really like the Arrrrrrrdbeg that was mentioned though, and Fermutation was interesting), MUCH better. Maybe a bit more subtle than it was hyped up to be and, yes, it's Octomore MSRP and not Octomore peatiness. Considering that I haven't managed to catch a bottle of Octomore on a shelf in over three years and grey market prices for it make Hypernova look like a bargain, it just is where the market is right now.
Man I've never seen a single bottle of ET BiB. I'd love to try the brown foreman before Saz but I have never seen any of it here strangely enough. I agree with the list, so much high price high demand whiskey that fell flat this year
same here, I had to go from right coast to the people's republik of Kalifornia to score one and that was the saz version. Since I never had the BF version, I thought the saz one was still a hitter for $25/liter, maybe BF didn't include the leftover stock with the sale to keep the quality going for a few years before the saz-distilled stuff came out?
I got a bottle of Midwinter Scene 10 Act 2. I've enjoyed the 2 glasses I've had of it but I'm not sure I'll ever pay that much for a bottle again. The pricing on it what simply absurd but I was treating myself after a bonus from work.
Happy New Year Fellas... question? Is it true that Midwinter Dram is Being discontinued as of next year? What is the age statement on this release?
I have a question. I got two bottles of High west midwinter dram at costco for $118.99. Would that price change your opinion? Or is it more the actual JUICE that you’re disappointed in?
I've been using Bonded Jack as a mixer with Coke. It's great like that, but neat is just 'meh'.
I like MWND act 10, I didn’t like the price hike but it was better than last years imo.
Hidden Barn Batch 5 is pretty awesome... can't speak to any others, but they're making good progress, IMO
Loved this video and this set is just fire.
Hidden Barn Batch 1 was my #1 whiskey buy of the year. I dig the guys from 5280 - I've had a number of their picks and they were some of the best I've had. Jackie is... well Jackie. I had high expectations, I got what tasted like 8 hour aged whiskey that came out of bath tub. Sadly this takes all the other releases off my buy list until I taste them.
The Triple Mash was better than the Bonded.
Our Clark and Sheffield BiB from 1792 doesn't taste nutty at all. Very sweet with vanilla and a little fruit. Great buy at $34 though, it's been on sale for $32 and $30.
I liked ET BiB it goes down easy and for a great price. Though, I've not had the BF version.
Good thing I didn't get A122 and bought a B522 on a whim. Then C922, that came in in November.
I LOVED RR6, got cherry cola from it and it was phenomenal. Definitely thing 5 was better and it'd be a bigger hit at 80, but I went and got a back up
Has anyone heard about the claim that ET BIB is still the exact same whiskey, just transported to Sazerac? Seems weird that an Bib could switch so quickly?
Disclaimer: newbie to the bourbon world and am dipping my toes in. I had heard great things about and purchased a bottle of Early Times this fall before I knew there was a transition from BF to Saz. I have never tasted the cork-bottled BF juice so I can’t compare, but I actually thoroughly enjoy the bottle of Early Times that I have. I do not get the same notes that you guys mentioned, but I am really curious to know what the BF juice tasted like. I’m hoping to find a friend who may still have some so that I can draw comparisons.
They make a bigger deal about it than it needs to be. I don’t have the grandiose palates of them so I still enjoy the new one thoroughly and can’t tell hardly any difference. Most of the other whiskey tubers and reviewers are in the same boat. New one is still good so if it’s good to you just ignore the whining.
I think these guys are mistaken. Bottled in bond requires a 4 year aging by one distiller at one distillery. Since Sazerac bought it in 2021, it most certainly has to be the same juice. Unless they somehow received the mash I’ll 4 years prior to acquisition? That’s my understanding anyway. They should do a side by side between the two.
I am almost a year into Bourbon. Started with Bottled in Bonds. (JTS BROWN my favorite) ...very skeptical of anything over $40....especially new brands with different barrel finishes and other possible gimmicks.
@@tommyfreiling this was my thought, as well, regarding the perceived difference between the products. I would love to be able to blind them together and see the differences between the two. Another channel mentioned it could have just been a funky batch due to the acquisition, but who knows
The BF ET BiB tastes/tasted very very similar 1792 BiB and especially similar to Col EH Taylor Small Batch. But at half the price and 250 ml more in the bottle. Subject to batch variatiom...
The BF ET BiB basically relegated Sazerac unnecessary for those who like that flavor profile. And I love it.
The Saz, subject to batch variation, is a stink sucker.
Midwinter Nights Dram didn't receive normal distribution to central and southern Illinois. If you find one on a shelf around here it will be $300 or more. Severely disappointed!
I can still get the plastic cap where I live. Good to know about the new one
I am not familiar with any of these but I can agree with you that if you are spending north of $200 it better be great. I am surprised by the ECBF because I really enjoy the ECSB especially at the price point.
Whisky Advocate has rated Jack Daniel's Bonded #1 for 2022. I would not recommend anything that Whisky Advocate recommends as they do get it wrong countless times.
I really like jack bonded but #1 was insane
I have the jack bonded and I agree it is NOT the best whiskey I've ever had to be nice.
If you glean find it I would recommend Noble Oak batch 1. Not a fan yet of anything else they have produce but batch 1 is awesome.
Great list. Ardbeg Ardcore was the lates committee release not Hypernova for 2022. Still, I skipped hypernova, got the Ardcore labeled as “biting a spiked ball” 😂 terrible release. Not a bad whisky just terrible price and label. You’re better off with a bottle of Uigeadail.
Plastic cap ET BIBs are still around. I saw some on the shelf in southern KY month or so ago.
Love you guys but you are wrong on the Sazerac Early Times. It is one of my favorite bottles I own. I'm just upset that I had to be in Tennessee to find it ( I live in PA)
Mix a little Woodford Reserve double Oaked with the Sz Early Times. My wife hates bourbon but said that smells like Christmas. A 375 ml of Woodford should fix 3 bottles of Early Times.
Thanks guys... good to know I made the right choice passing on the Hypernova...
Awesome video
DAMN, I thought the teal tax strip on that Hidden Barn was a 1910/1920 bottle. What a fake-out. So so so glad I didn't pick up a MWND last week for $150, but I am a little surprised about the flak the bert-burt (WTWT new label for the license plate bottles) MM bottles since most "commoners" I know loved at least one of them...
perspective: regardless if you can find them or not msrp for btac is still around 99$. i was super disappointed with some of these price hikes this year.
Yea so it feels really insulting when you put an 8 year product at 2.5x those prices
I wish corryvreckan was only 89, it’s one of my favorites and it well over 100 retail.
My local store did a blind tasting with Early Times metal top vs EH Taylor BIB and Early Times still won. People want to hate on the metal top but it’s still great juice
Have you reviewed Dexter 3 Wood Bourbon? If not, hope you will have a review later this year. I searched and didn't find an episode. A friend loves it. It's about $50 a bottle.
Great watching your reviews. Regardig your Hidden Barrel review. It's like watching Jonesy and Riley disappointed with Katie. You want to tell how you really feel, but you know Squirrely Dan and Dairy will probably kick your ass
The best thing to do is trade for the purple top Willett bottles, traded a Lot B for it this years 6 year and it was 100% worth it
Excellent video!
Sorry lads stupid question but dose drink prices change alot in different states from Ireland love the videos
“That’s like a lemon pepper chicken.” 😂😂😂😂
Was lookin forward to trying jd bonded
Only found the brt-02 Christmas Eve. I thought it’s a solid pour
I agree with the MWND Act 10 being underwhelming from previous releases. Its not bad whiskey, but with the price going up this year I was disappointed with it overall.
I agree 100% about Hypernova, and tbh as Ardbeg as a whole. Typically, I find Corryvreckan to beat out the majority of the committee releases, especially when you consider value. But if you're a huge fan of the distillery, I understand why people want it since it's more of an academic excercise imo.
Damn I dunno if I’ve ever tried the Arrrdbeg. Sad to hear about the Hypernova. Hard to compete with Octomore.
The new wall is dope!
So the 1l Jack Daniels Bottled in Bond that looks more like the Old No. 7 is the one to get?
JD bonded does make really solid cocktails fyi.. I didn’t like it neat then used it for old fashioned’s and thought it was great
Also.. the meijer 11 year old russels pick was amazeballs!!
F that price on the single rickhouse
