The frequency of worm and tunnel references in this franchise has me paranoid. Sort of like Gandalf after returning from the Balrog: "Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day."
This was a good theory and only mildly terrifying until I remembered how Melisandre mentioned that the Iron Born worship a demon, and how the wierwood are called demons over and over and over. AND how Melisandre looks at Patchface and seems to think he is also a demon of some kind. If only we’d actually gotten all the parts of the world of Ice and Fire that had actually been written. *sigh*
Melisandre has alot of misinterpretation. I think she misinterprets it. Jacquen calls a weirwood tree a Fire God in the second book at Harrenhall. Also, maybe the dragon glass is leaves of a stone turned weirwood tree, probably that's why it is referred to as frozen fire.
The Grey King - Ironborn hero and probably flat-up a fucking White Walker slew Ygg, the flesh-eating Demon Tree. They might both be Demons but they are clearly separate factions.
Remember when the 3 eyed raven was trying to get bran to fly in the dream, when bran looked down he saw thousands of corpses impaled on the large icicles. In my opinion the 3 eyed raven doesnt know exactly who hes looking for, he just throws out a big net trying to wrangle and find as many greenseer potentials as possible. I think Euron was once a candidate because of how magically inclined he seems to be, he just never had his 3 eyed opened and couldnt fly hence he crashed down and was impaled in his dream and the 3 eyed raven moved on. That's way he tells his brother he used to dream of being able to fly, and that maybe he actually could. So euron could have been a greenseer and still has some of its potential powers.
It's also interesting, that the weirwoods, which grow rather in the north where the white walkers come from - have red leaves - the color of fire, while the shade of evening trees, which rather grow where the dragons come from have blue leaves - the color of ice.

For now, I suspect the oily black stone is what happens when Dragonstone decays, releasing some kind of cursed substance indicative of the unnatural, cursed nature of dragons and dragon related technology as a whole. I think Asshai and Yeen, as well as a few other places, were very ancient settlements of pre-Valyrian dragonriders, as either precursors or descendant off-shoots of the Dawn Empire. Awesome first episode! I’ve always looked at the weirwoods and shade trees as an inversion of one another but always wondered if the “ebony” that we see in the door at the house of black and white was in fact made from ebony, or from the shade trees. I was always of the opinion that unlike the weirwoods, the shade trees do not petrify, but rather rot or “turn to dust.” If that’s not the case then I can definitely see the connection between the oily black stone and shade trees playing out. It makes sense then that we see for instance on the iron islands, both the sea stone chair and naggas ribs in such close proximity to one another. As if they are not separate but closely intertwined. Take the kingsmoot, an almost democratic process by which the lords of the iron islands gather at naggas ribs to select a king who will sit the sea stone chair. Very intriguing material. Really excited for future episodes and discussion!

Zachary Grinacoff Interesting idea that it's the source of the ebony at the Faceless temple. I don't think it fits beyond a superficial level, but it's always nice reading original ideas, and it def could turn out that you're right. Can't recall where I heard this, but there's a somewhat convincing theory the Nagas bones are actually weirwood, and it's so old it's petrified at a level seen nowhere else. Although the tree on Blackwood land, the poisoned dead tree, is described to be at the early stages of becoming petrified similar to Nagas bones. Not sure if this theory is correct but it's far from a longshot.
Great theory! Good job on the research. Never fear the darkness, Bran. The strongest trees are rooted in the dark places of the earth. Darkness will be your cloak, your shield, your mother's milk. Darkness will make you strong.-Bloodraven to Bran ADWD Especially like the idea of the weirwood roots appearing as krakens or worms/serpents. I always thought that the scene where Bran eats the weirwood paste and the one where Dany drinks the Shade of the Evening, both have a very strong Alice in Wonderland vibe. I love watching you on LML, but I have fallen a bit behind on his videos unfortunately. This is an excellent video.
THIS IS SUCH AN INTERESTING VIDEO! It makes so much sense. Like, some of the cities we know about are stone, others are wood. But the thing about stone is that you have to mine it. Where would these people be getting this oily black stone from unless part of the earth is made from it? It could come from the sky but I doubt there would be enough from the sky for full cities. But a wood city, that over the years turned to stone, or a wood throne that was carved and then eventually turned to stone: that makes sense.
Thanks Christine! I'm going to be doing a video on Nagga next. Thanks for watching and check out the video on Garth and the Grey King that was put out a few days back. Its a long one but deals with most of the stuff discussed on the Bael livestream. ruclips.net/video/IgqfqzywHFw/видео.html
Love your infinitely interesting analyses, very articulate and informative. Very soft, clear, and concise voice is just a plus! Keep up the great work.
Great video exploring ideas I hadn't considered before. First ASOiAF channel I've seen in a while with original theories and connections. You earned the sub.
Valyrian Steel (which is described as dark or grey) = Petrified Ebony-Black Wierwood Tree material + bathed in Magical Dragon Fire (+ perhaps blood-magic sacrifice). The Swords & armour of The Others = Petrified White Wierwood Tree + bathed in Magical Ice Dragon Ice breath (+ perhaps blood magic sacrifice). This is all just a theory. But nobody knows how to make Valyrian Steel because it just is not steel! It’s Petrified Wierwood material! Plus, it makes it a great symbol for fiery sword symbolism. The Wierwoods are the symbolic *Fire of The Gods* in this story. I think I remember there being a vision or dream that Bran has about someone firing Wierwood arrows. So we know that it can be weaponized!
So you are actually catching onto something that both LmL and I have discussed on Twitter in the past. The possibility that the trees are part of the ingredients for Valyrian steel. I think in one instance Valyrian steel is also said to drink light. Its also possible Dawn may actually be created through the use of weirwood. We have seen a few things used in sigils that also support this concept, particularly House Forrester. www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=I3YSlkDH&id=298A290B4549769420D04F1437D281E763D5E20D&thid=OIP.hWhlqrwWuO2BknraO2OVQAHaI6&mediaurl=http%3a%2f%2fawoiaf.westeros.org%2fimages%2ff%2ff6%2fHouse_Forrester.png&exph=659&expw=548&q=house+forrester&simid=608052154707869778&selectedIndex=0&ajaxhist=0
@@TheDisputedLands There is also a theory that the black and white trees are inverse images of each other. The inspiration of these trees comes from the Kabbalah. According to sources from this mystical knowledge, the tree of knowledge and the tree of immortality are like this. So the trees that the Shade of the Evening come from has the potential to grant immortality, while the weirwood network grant knowledge. Now if we see the motifs of the Garden of Eden in ASOIAF, the children of the forest who drank of the Light of the Morning gained knowledge, but at the cost of shortened lifespans. These who drank the shade of the evening gained immortality, but at the price of stagnating. Now could I be on to something?
@@jsull81 It would also explain the story of the God-Emperors of the Dawn, and The Bloodstone Emperor's actions if the GEOTD was stagnating because there was a widespread practice of drinking shade of the evening among the nobles and the royal family. I can see the parallels between the Bloodstone Emperor and Leto II Atreides in that vein. Both took harsh, decisive steps to keep humanity alive, even if it meant driving people out of their native land into unknown terrain.
This is one of my favorite channels that covers ASOIAF and this is my favorite video I came back and watched this half a dozen times. Everyone else pretty much talks about the same things but this channel covers thing I never saw anyone else talk about.
@@TheDisputedLands there's a RUclips channel called David reads ASOIAF he reads all the books from ASOIAF each book in a separate playlist with each chapter a video in each playlist and does a amazing job reading the story doing different voices for each character. Everyone I talk to in the comments I recommend your channel for some of the best ASOIAF content.
Great video! I’ve always been interested in the connection between these two types of trees. Lots of thought provoking ideas! I’m subscribed and looking forward to your next video!
I love this video. If the theory is correct, it dramatically simplifies a huge branch of "oily stone" speculation into an easily understood package that further reinforces the duality of A Song of Ice and Fire. As the community has gotten better at decoding GRRM's symbolism and indirect references, it seems like a lot of theory-crafting results in "more complexity!", but I suspect that a truly elegant interpretation of ASoIaF will flow from the elegant simplicity of work like this. Thank you!
Hi Chris! So glad you were able to take something away from it, I really enjoy comments like this. They make my day!! I am still a small channel, so be sure to spread the word.
Question. If you made a wine out of the black/blue trees and called it "shade of the evening." What if you made a wine of the white/red trees be called? Light of the Morning? What would it look like? If some one in the story WAS drinking a wine made with weirwood sap, what sort of effect so you think it would have? Honestly. How this question and the evidence in the book regarding it has never been questioned is beyond me.
Presumably it would be very similar to the Weirwood paste that Bloodraven and the Children give Bran, except brewed to be alcoholic, and without Jojen in it. : )
I asked this question on another channel a while back but it never got answered. Do you think that the vast cave network in planetos was made by a root system of some sort of World Tree?
It is funny that you ask that question. In Valyria, there was said to be Fire Wyrms which no one has actually seen, there are some hints that something similar to large worms caused the underground walkways beneath Castle Black as they are called "Worm Ways" No one has seen these worms either. I think the possibility is there because GRRM has likened ww roots to worms on several occasions. I can't say this is the case, but I can say this has also crossed my mind
Have to remember to thank Smokescreen for the recommendation as this was a very interesting and well researched/sourced video. I look forward to many more like this one :-)
Congrats on the channel! Always love new content and perspectives. And great 1st topic, look forward to the next with Garth the Greenhand. Also, great video with LML!
Speaking of the warlocks drinking shadows...doesnt Mirri Maz Duur make some sort of paste in the tent when she's working her blood magic? When she says the dead will dance here tonight and then Dany sees shadows dancing?
I guess it was a red powder then. I'm thinking of when Dany woke up after. "And then mirri maz Duur was there, the maegi, tipping a cup against her lips. She tasted sour milk, and something else, something thick and bitter. Warm liquid ran down her chin. Somehow she swallowed."
I loved this theory, and hadn't heard it _anywhere_ else (I go everywhere except Reddit). Thankyou for this absolute treasure of a theory and a video. Having said that though, I _need_ those krakens to be legit!
This is so good (finally committing to watching all of these that are casually referenced in the fandom). Breaks my heart all over again for our real world burning of all the trees.
I heard you on Robert's stream last night and I thought this theory was interesting and definitely possible and sensible but I was not 100% convinced. Having watched this longer explanation and given it a lot more thought I am now convinced you are indeed correct. In fact now that I am convinced I cannot recall what possible reasons for doubt I could have had.
Cool! You can thank LmL for directing me here. Very interesting. I rarely have time to read, so this format is great. Subd and eagerly waiting for the next one.

Awesome video, I'm looking forward to watching more! When you talked about Corlys Velaryon going to exploring the carved trees of the Ifequevron, do you think he might've learned some things from them? I think this because his bastard son Addam, went to the Isle of Faces to consult the Green Men during the DotD, so Corlys might've told him the power of sight from the trees.
Hey thanks. It's for sure a possibility and one I hadn't thought of. I mean, Addam is heavily implied to be his son, so he might have shared a few things with him, but for the moment there isn't too much to go off. Great thoughts!
This is so great. I'm so glad I finally found some RUclipsrs that are "sharp eyed" readers. Do you think the Fist of the First Men is a stump of a great weirwood or the other kind? Kind of like the world tree, Yggdrassil
I dont think it was a stump due to the first men fortifications already built on the soil and due to the size of the fist itself. I do think high heart is very significant though.
It's a good thing DIY gene-kits aren't around. Weirwoods are something I would definitely have tried to create. That and fire breathing, midget, beavers... Cute but fierce.
You mentioned a gray-green cycle; does it have any significance if a character has gray-green eyes? If so, what does it mean for that character? Littlefinger has gray-green eyes.
Hey, Thanks for watching!! Yes, I describe it as a Grey-Green cycle in the discussion portion of the written essay on Westeros.org, and yes, eye color can provide hints as to possible symbolism,. Because it seems the grey king started out green and turned grey after killing his green brother. Petyr Baelish will be covered after I hash out the Merling King legend for everyone, Petyr will be in the video essay that follows the Merling King topic.
Is this from the books as I haven't read them yet I'm still trying to get them on Audible as I much rather listen as it makes me feel like I'm there , an this is the first time I've listened to your video so I wish they had put them in the show like Daenarys visions in the house of the undying I've read about it an what she saw an how she felt , I saw it on Grey Area videos
Yes, this is all from the books including the World of Ice and Fire and the Maps from the Lands of Ice and Fire. Grey Area sure does have an excellent video about this topic and I'm glad that she has sparked your interest! The show just doesn't give the trees the same amount of attention they are given in the books, and you are correct in thinking this video would be more understandable with the background knowledge of the AsoIaF series. Thanks for watching and godspeed in your endeavors! I have quite a few friends who really like the audio version!
I find it interesting that the leaves of the black tree are blue and the weirwood, red. Blood is red and blue depending on whether it is inside or outside the body - the weir mush Bran eats connects him to the outside world, the black tree concoction Dany drinks connects her to her bloodline within.

I always thought that the scene where Bran eats the weirwood paste and the one where Dany drinks the Shade of the Evening, both have a very strong Alice in Wonderland vibe. I love watching you on LML, but I have fallen a bit behind on his videos unfortunately. This is an excellent video.
The quality of these videos are amazing! Waiting for your next video ☺️
Thank you ser!
Found you from the LML Bael stream; and I’m pretty sure you’re one of my new favorite content creators. Please keep it coming! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
The point wirh the petrified wood blew my mind. Never subscribed so promptly. Thank you for the video
Hi Amanda! Such delightful first video!!! Keep them coming... soon!!! XD Thank you for having decided to make this new channel!!
Congrats on the channel. Really enjoyed the topic. looking forward to seeing more
Love your infinitely interesting analyses, very articulate and informative. Very soft, clear, and concise voice is just a plus! Keep up the great work.
Great video exploring ideas I hadn't considered before. First ASOiAF channel I've seen in a while with original theories and connections. You earned the sub.
I could listen to you read a phone book, thanks for all that you do for us.❤❤❤
"I am the Blood Maegi, I speak for the trees."

The Disputed Lands Thank you very much for taking the time to share this! & for your hard work analyzing GRRM’s great work!
@@elyseenger2646 I definitely think so!
Found my way here after someone recommended you in the History of Westeros Facebook group. Excellent theory, have a subscription :)
Great to hear! Welcome to the Disputed Lands and thanks for watching!!!!
I’ve been waiting to find a page like yours, love these videos from ASOIAF!
Hey, thank you! Welcome to The Disputed Lands!
Amazing theory! Loved it. What is the music in the background? Where I can find it?
This is a truly brilliant video, and perspective about weirwood, shade of the evening, oily stones, its inspiring!
Thank you so much!
This is one of my favorite channels that covers ASOIAF and this is my favorite video I came back and watched this half a dozen times. Everyone else pretty much talks about the same things but this channel covers thing I never saw anyone else talk about.
Thank you so much!
@@TheDisputedLands Your most welcome.
Light of dawn
Tequila sunrise
You are noticing things no one else does. Another great video.
Hey thanks so much and thank you for the compliment!
The Disputed Lands awesome. Great video btw.
Fire wyrms could be lava channels.
And that is no doubt the most likely the case.
@@TheDisputedLands well fire and blood shed more light on this.
That was an interesting, intense, and eye opening tutorial. Thank you.
You are very welcome!
Marvelous! Thank you. I haven’t had a chance to read the historical books yet, and I love the way you explain things. Very well done.
Hey thank you!!
Going back watching some of your old videos.......soooooo good 😁👍
Wonderful Debut! Looking forward to future videos. Keep up the great work!
Hey thanks! Go ahead and check the channel page 😁.
Thanks! have already seen several now. Love the Ironborn material.@@TheDisputedLands
@@redsoxcometh oh great! Glad you are enjoying them!
Have to remember to thank Smokescreen for the recommendation as this was a very interesting and well researched/sourced video. I look forward to many more like this one :-)
Wow, that's great. Did he recommend this video on his channel?
The Disputed Lands yes, during his livestream yesterday
Thanks! Very exciting to see a new channel. Very thought provoking and logically presented. Keep up the great work!
Welcome to the Disputed Lands Andrew!! Thanks for watching!!
You have completely convinced me. I've heard a lot of theories. but the trees really do seem like they are the answer to a lot of oddities in asoiaf
Congrats on the channel! Always love new content and perspectives. And great 1st topic, look forward to the next with Garth the Greenhand. Also, great video with LML!
There is a perfectly good road which seems to lead from Qohor to Valyria via Volantis.
Somehow she swallowed."
fresh voice coming out of the disputed lands glad to have another highly entertaining member to our family welcome girl and great vid
Congratz for the excellent ASOIAF lore video! Already subscribed and looking for more content! Love from Brazil!
Hey thanks!
Excellent first episode and a wonderful topic to start with. Subscribed!
Oh goodie! A channel to tide me over until s8/TWoW. Seven blessings to you.
Thanks for watching!
Just found your channel amanda... really enjoying your content thus far!
Glad you are enjoying them! Thanks for watching 🙂
Thanks so much and welcome to The Disputed Lands!!
Cool! You can thank LmL for directing me here. Very interesting. I rarely have time to read, so this format is great. Subd and eagerly waiting for the next one.
Hi Steven! thanks for watching! Fun Fact... I sat next to you at the Con of Thrones in the corner for the podcast meet and greet with History of Westeros :-)
We sat next to each other in the corner waiting for the meet and greet to start.
The Disputed Lands I bet I recognize you when I see u at CoT this year. You are going right?
I sure am...See you there!
Love this video , gives so much to that yin and yang of this story.
Adding the comment to see whether you like it 5 years after the videos was released😊
Stumbled on your channel today and binging the videos now, one by one.
Apart from Lucifer Lightbringer this is by far the best channel on ASOIAF. Greetings from Poland!
🙂
You keep an impressive connection with your fandom I see! May your channel grow!
I've noticed your videos have a geographic element to them and I just love it!
In Africa, we have a bird called an ostrich. In South America, we have an offshoot-of-it bird called an emu.
Another Thrones channel added to my growing addiction lol. Great insight! Well thought out and explained in a way that's easy to follow. Looking forward to more of your fine work. I've been dying to get a fresh take on Marwyn and possibly the group he's conspiring with. Great job with your debut!
Outstanding work. You are brilliant.
I used to imagine that the oily black stone was oil source rock like in an oilfield. When they find how to get the oil out of it, Westeros/etc goes into an industrial age.
That was really awesome and well thought out! Your theories and methods remind me of "The Order of The Greenhand" channel - you should totally show them your work and do a co-op video! Lord and Lady Greenhand are VERY nice and VERY smart and I'm sure they'd be supportive of your work; maybe it could help you get more subscribers. Do you have a Patreon page?
Hi Dratheart, thanks for your feedback. I am glad you are liking the videos, and there will be future collaborations with other content creators. I do not have any plans with Order of the Greenhand, but appreciate the feedback. For the moment I don't plan on having a Patreon. Instead I urge you to support those channels and content creators you enjoy that do have a patreon… Order of The Greenhand for example if you enjoy them, make sure to support them. Thanks for watching!
Great content! Comprehensive, intellectual and with a great flow ☺ thank God I'm only a year late discovering your channel. Subscribed!
Glad to hear and welcome to The Disputed Lands!
I'm looking forward to the next video. Great work.
So glad someone did a video about these 2 trees...Very good!!! Audio is a bit low...
Great job! Looking forward to your future videos.
I loved your replys to my questions on the last stream
Awesome presentation! Hoping for more!
Excellent! So just to be clear I’ve taken the right inference from this, The Old Gods is the weirwood tree network and one camp of CoF, the Great Other is the black tree network and an essos CoF crew? Or are they both the old gods? In which case, what force is the Great Other?
God..! You liked all of your comments.
But yours i pinned😉
@@TheDisputedLands The Disputed Lands & Preston Jacobs are my favorite.

Congratulations Amanda...your thoroughly researched, visually entertaining and creatively narrated videos are top notch...keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Awesome video, I'm looking forward to watching more!
Omg my mind is blown, I love your analysis
"...and molten gold. It was all the tastes she had ever known..." Molten gold? When did Dany taste molten gold, her brother tasted that?
He there! So the line reads "It was all the tastes she has ever known, and none of them" molten gold would be in the "none of them" category.
@@TheDisputedLands Ah ok, Still thinks it's strange to bring up Molten gold in that line :D
@@TheDisputedLands Though you have to wonder how she can identify a taste as "molten gold" when she has never known the taste of it...
Love this video. I'll be watching this one again
Thanks for the video. Look forward to seeing more.
A yt friend recommended this video.
Wow! Excellent video, thank you! ☺️
If the red leaves and blue leaves exist close together in a forest for a map perspective it would appear purple....
It's a good thing DIY gene-kits aren't around. Weirwoods are something I would definitely have tried to create.
That and fire breathing, midget, beavers... Cute but fierce.
Great video. Looking forward to more content from you
Really enjoyed this. Please keep it up
Fantastic connection. Assumin the world is round I think these connections have to be true!!!
The oily black stone made its first appearance in Dying of the Light.
It seems possible that the two tree types are fungal rather than of plant material
Is this from the books as I haven't read them yet I'm still trying to get them on Audible as I much rather listen as it makes
me feel like I'm there , an this is the first time I've listened to your video so I wish they had put them in the show like Daenarys visions in the house of the undying I've read about it an what she saw an how she felt , I saw it on Grey Area videos
