- This week on Dining on a Dime, host Lucas Peterson visits Crown Pastries, a Middle Eastern bakery in the Scarborough neighborhood of Toronto known for their handmade flaky baklava and other sweet items. Helmed by two Syrian brothers - who ran a bakery of the same name in Aleppo before they immigrated to Canada - it’s a place that offers a little taste of home to the many Syrian refugees who now call Toronto home.

Hope peace returns to Aleppo one day.

First I'm not without sin, I commend the Men(s) for opening the shop (looks good). I would never leave my Country, I would have stayed and fought for free Syria "Death to Tyrants!" May you find Peace.
+Jack Wongen It is much harder fighting when you have little to no weapons and an entire family to protect. Assad has this many weapons and has a cold hearted military.
The Syrian War is so tragic, could you share more on why there's conflict? and what started it?
3AProduction I think you should take a look at Eva Bartlett, Patrick Henningsen, Vanessa Beeley, Prof. Tim Anderson, Sharmine Narwani and the Jimmy Dore show if you want news on Syria. They do very good reporting on Syria and some of them are actually reporting from Syria and talk to actual Syrians in Syria instead of barfing out the same garbage the mainstream media pull out of their ass.
Thanks as always to everyone for watching -- the work these brothers are doing is truly something special. See you next week! XOXO
The United Nations has gone on record stating that Toronto is the most cosmopolitan city in the world and I could not be happier. We recently had a very welcome influx of Syrian refuges and it's just great that they can get foods from their homeland. This looks sensational and I have had some, but not all of these treats. I hope this will encourage all Torontonians, regardless of their background, to visit and partake of this feast. Thank you for sharing this!
Looks amazing. I enjoy how Lucas seems to tactfully ask some of the harsher questions without being insensitive.
Have you been busy? We miss you.
Eater Work, dude/ette. Also there was a severe lack of Lucas the last while, but you have rectified this mistake so don't worry, this long distance relationship will continue.
Tuesday is Lucas' day. He's a busy guy and we're lucky to pin him down for a week long shoot here and there.
Lucas Peterson fans make up 95% of Eater subscribers.
It's a fact. No point in arguing.
It's the only reason I still subscribe to this channel.
Truth
so true
lucas for president
Yeah sorry Eater, Lucas has stolen your show.
I love watching the diversity of ppl and foods with their respective stories. Much respect Lucas.
These guys are super hospitable and proud of what they make! Love'em!
Note to all those who find these pastries sweet. Have them with Mediterranean or regional strong coffee ( or milk for the kiddies). As they were made for each other. Ice cream is good too.
Exactly! Always with a cup of greek, turkish, lebanese, syrian coffee...I love all blends
A scoop of kaymak is perfect combined!
I love it when foreigners know the PROPER way to eat food from my part of the world haha. Love from Turkey! 🇹🇷
Well a "neighbourhood of nations" is (and always should be) like that! We share thinks from our individual cultures and change them accordingly thus giving the opportunity for more treats!!! 👍😉🇬🇷
Alexis P. agreed. cheers 👍 🇹🇷🇬🇷
Those pastries look amazing, but honestly those two brothers deserve a ton of credit for building such a great business! They seem like such cool and chill guys.
We saw this last night and had to go there today, just came back and it is THE BEST baklava I've ever tried
Awesome! So glad you paid them a visit. Hope you said hello for us!
I am so happy that Dining on a Dime has come to Toronto I have watched every season so far and was always like man I will have to go to some of these places eventually and always was hoping he would come to Toronto and I am so excited to see what other awesome places that lucas shows us in Toronto
Lucas reminds me of myself.
Intelligent, good looking and able to talk to anyone and get along. Chicks totally dig us
You forgot humble.
You just sunk my battleship, Eater :-)
No i am not gay, tho i have been asked many times since my coming of age.

Pretty sure Lucas isn't gay dude.
Thank you for this wonderful channel that not only celebrates food but also diversity. Food is the ultimate unifier of mankind!!!
kenafeh is the best..hands down
I had no knowledge of Syrian baked goods until now. It looks amazing and I would love to try some!
anyone from Syria thumbs up.
Man.. Canadians are the best
So glad you're in Toronto and the GTA. We love @Eater.
I need to try this place out!! I live in scarborough
Tell everyone we said hello!
one of our editors just went, so so good
Lucas is fast becoming a favorite of mine, right up there with Nick. Such a terrific series, I always look forward to his videos.
lucas the only host who can explain something with kindness without exaggerating and adding weird sound effects to make a video better. The only reason I'm subscribed to Eater. Good job!
I've been in this place and they're the best.
Love!! My grandparent's came here from Syria.. This is like a trip down memory lane. Looks scrumptious. Lucas.. Love you buddy!
Syrians have a type of sweets called Madlouka ... mind-blowing when it's cold
All the Lucas love, great episode. I think it's that Lucas comes off so approachable. You just wanna eat out and geek out when he visits places.
I truly enjoyed watching your video and your lovely attitude and great sense of humor while discovering the amazing and excellent pastries of Aleppo. I got to discover the same sorts of pastries in gorgeous Lebanon when i went there less than ten years ago. it’s considered one of the healthiest and most flavorful gastronomy I’ve ever had! I discovered it in its best form when I went to study Arabic at the American University of Beirut about nine years ago. That was a revelation! I love the food and fine pastries of Syria and Lebanon. Greetings from Oslo, Norway!
You know it's a good day when there is another episode of dining on a dime with Lucas!
ahhhh that third one. imma die !!! can't wait to move to Toronto next year.
I would love to try Syrian food. Those pastries look amazing.

WOOOO Syrian Eater fans represent! I'm so glad Lucas got to try the sweet side of my cuisine. It truly is one of the most unique cuisines out there. Hopefully you'll get to try the savoury stuff next.
Best baklava you will ever taste in your life !!!! They are so fresh and full of flavour…. My kids and everyone in the family are hooked for life now !!! You have to try it at least once
I unsubscribed the channel but still following DOD. Lucas really knows how to describe food, better than anyone i know.
Thank you for this Lucas & Co! When you taste exceptional baklava, it is truly life changing. I had that experience with Turkish baklava in a town outside Rotterdam where my cousin lives.
just found your channel! love it! carry on...I'll be watching😉
I need to see Lucas comment on this. I see Lucas I like.
I'm so glad they're doing a series where i live so i can finally go out and eat at these places!
I have been going there since they opened, didn't know EATER featured them. What I like about their baklava is that they are not soggy.
This place is awesome. It is great to see it featured!
I've been on a low carb diet for 6 weeks. This video physically hurts.
Stick it out! You can do it!
No cheat day?
I feel your pain. Let me guess...wedding? LOL. I'm getting married and I torture myself with these videos ROTFL. Stick to it... I'm sure you're getting results!
How peculiar that you mention this, I started my low carb diet the same week you did (Aug 1). This video made me reminisce about yummy pastries but the excellent camerawork and Lucas' detailed descriptions make it easy to realize that I can remember those sensations of mouth pleasure. I also eat around 150g of fat a day so I feel satiated and have no carb cravings.
This is wonderful. I really appreciate the explanation of the Baklava differences.
I love your channel!!! Lucas is the best!!!
OMG if I ever lived near this shop, I'd get sugar-related disease in no time... Those pastries looks soooooooo delicious!
Again thanks Lucas for giving the humane side in every DoaD trip, this episode hits a very touchy subject but you nailed it!
0:25 I don't know much about middle eastern food but that looks like kadayif or kanafeh and I can't resist those... They're just so delicious... I wish I knew of this place while I still lived in Toronto.
Seriously, i'm eating Baklava watching this :)
lucky you
Kwayanyways Baklava is disgusting I really don't know how my family eats it.
Kwayanyways I'm eating baklava from here while watching this lmfao
PhanGirl .
You probably tried the Greek baklava, not the Middle Eastern one. Lukas explained the difference in 4:40
Aziz Ahmari I've tried Greek baklava, it wasn't great. But I've also tried middle eastern baklava, and in comparison to the Greek one, it's a hundred times better.
Wow - everything looks so yummy! I am going to have to make a trip out to the Crown Pastries when I am in Toronto!! Thank you for let me know about them!!
Amazing craftsmanship...
I would love if Lucas did more sweet episodes.
Lucas again you made my day bacoava are awsome I live neer tyem but did not know....ill make sure to visit them soon
Lucas really enjoys his job and he likes eating too 😁
I wanna try all the pastries look so good
Absolutely fantastic. I'll need to go by there soon!
Pizza is orginally from Italy, you can named it American pizza or European but it’a orginally Italian. Baklava is also Turkish, Turkish word and history but you can named it American or Lebanese it’s pattented as Turkic historical food😃 Gaziantep-Turkey
Oh man I come from a very multicultural city and baklava is generally quite accessible but this looks insanely good. I'm seriously considering going there just for this!!!!
Great recommendation Lucas, thanks!
love backlava, I love it so much I learned to make it in its simplest form to make money.
Definitely wanna go here now. It's midnight and I'm salivating. Ah!!
That looks so delicious!
I live a 15 mins drive from crown pasteures, never been. Crazy how I’ve been to that plaza many times since I was a kid but never been to this restaurant. I must go there and t their baklava
I need coffee or tea with this.
it all looks so yummy!!!!
Happy for these guys. Let's be clear Baklava is actually Turkish and the best baklava makers tend to come from the south east area of Gazintep , not too far from Syria. As the whole area was under Ottoman rule for hundreds of years the blend of many cultures made foods similar in the areas. If you go to Turkey you will see the Baklava shops that specialize in the beautiful desert.
Aydin Odyakmaz it's not turkish, it's middle eastern.
Disagree with you on that one
Lots of great hole in the wall places in Scarborough. Shawarma Empire is another great place on Lawrence Ave.
Oh goodness, they look so amazing
aaaaaaaaand now I need to get some baklava!
Yay you're in Toronto
Really it's the best middle eastern pastries in Toronto
Good job people 😄 everything just looks perfectly done. my favorite one is harieseh 😍 y3teeko el3afieh ya rab ❤❤
Oh my, I now want yo go to Toronto (from Indonesia) just to get some of these guys pastries
Trace And Tulu Toronto is amazing!! I love living here
Lucas got style too ... Nice shirt
looks great!
Somewhere, Gary Johnson is watching this with great confusion wondering what an Aleppo is. Is it a pastry? He sits and ponders.
everything looks soooooo delicious!
That woman is Canada exemplified. I like this bakery because it is halal and my relatives can enjoy it.
holy crap that looks so good
That's why, being Middle Eastern, I can't possibly have a flat stomach.
Try an Egyptian place if you can find one, guys!
Yaaas to the Egypt comment! 🐫
You may get your wish this season in Toronto!
Halle-frickin'-lujah!
I want to go there so badly
makes.me miss Toronto even more
yay Lucas! semolina!!!!! baklava😭
Lucas you need your own channel.Lukas
all of it looks amazing 🤗
A celebrity was born there! He played the protagonists in movies like the Cat in the Hat and Shrek in the movies named after them.
lucas you da real mvp
it is so tragic to see such an amazing and beautiful place destroyed.
Will need to check out Crown Pastries but you'll need a car to get to the Lawrence East/Birchmount area. Also Scarborough is a more diverse than central Toronto (i.e. downtown/midtown and North York) since homes are "cheaper". Think there are way better restaurant options in the east end too.
keep it up Lucas! Subbing just to watch your show!
he has a canadian accent cool
Crown has great baklava, but I have to give the edge to Patisserie Royale, which is also in Scarborough.
omg looks so good.
God. My mouth was watering throughout this video. And I'm on a diet. So sad.
Basbousa is my jam.
Very nice
World class, looks much better than turkish or greek Baklava.. bravo
Scarborough, Ontario - Scarborough is part of the MegaCity that is Toronto
Kim Williams living in the scarbz is awesome
Wow its look Delicious
Knafeh is my favorite. Cheese, nuts and honey.😍
i want to try this
The last one is the most delicious tbh
How many languages do Lucas speak? Impressive accent on how you pronouced Esh al asfour
this looks amazing! too bad I'm allergic to cashews and pistachios.
I have the same two allergies. I'm always incredibly careful when eating Indian and Middle Eastern foods.
My partner has the same issue. He’s allergic to both and other but allergies.
