Another problem with all the big names is that Nick's not going to be able to get them all back for a tv series. Superfly is dead so they don't have to worry about him but all the other mutants they introduced will now be expected to show up and will cost to much for a tv budget or will be recast or just magically not be around for most of the show. So not only was the big names not needed in this movie. It also locks those characters from getting the screen time they would usually get from the tv show to build up their personalities.

As a crusty 30 year old, I'll never get the hate for this movie. They were fun as hell and adorable, and on top of that the characters were all stylized like an old rugrats show. On top of that, they weren't nerfed because of their kind of goofy "they learned through tv"

    • @NeecyGG
      @NeecyGG 9 месяцев назад +20

As a fellow crusty 30 something...same! Like it feels like people are just trying to dislike it. The only valid criticism I really felt was in this video was the Jackie Chan/Splinter segment about how disjointed Splinters characterization is. But the stuff about like all the a-list voice actors...it was more a critique of the marketing, nothing was really said about whether the actors negatively impacted the actual story/performance. So its not like the movie sacrificed good performance JUST for the sake of name dropping. No of course there wouldn't be enough screen time for everyone. But take away their expectation that big name=screen time and the amount of time those characters were on screen to contribute to the Superfly story was perfect. They needed to be individual mutants with their own qualms about humans rather than henchmen #1-12 to be able to choose to defy Superfly. And they got just enough screen time to develop that without taking the spotlight. And then the video complains "the story focused on all the boys as a whole instead of one brother..." only to turn around and say it was too Leo focused......make up your mind! This was an excellent TMNT movie that felt fresh, looked amazing, and was executed beautifully.

The characters of the 4 turtles themselves weren’t that fleshed out IMO. A consequence of having so many different characters I think. And changing the origin story removing all Japanese content from it was interesting considering they introduce shredder in a post credits scene. I don’t mind that decision but does it take away any of the emotional weight with no oroku saki vs hamato Yoshi backstory? I always enjoyed that the turtles had this Japanese ninjitsu background and that is changed in this version. But really I am picking nits and overall loved this movie.

In the case of the acting mentioned around 8:30, I think a large reason this was done was for the actors playing the turtles, they’re not big names and they haven’t been in the industry that long and not to mention they’re all really young, so I think that a large reason why compared to them there are so many big names is to boost their careers. Let’s use the example is Nicolas Cantu auditioned for a much bigger role than this, the casting crew would look on his record (Or whatever you would call it) see that he once played a main role in a movie where he also happened to be working with a lot of big name actors like Jackie Chan, Seth Rogan, John Cena etc. and that would immediately make the crew think ‘This guy knows what he’s doing’ (This goes for all four of them of course, I was just using Cantu as an example)
This isn’t the first time something like this has been done in a movie, and it’s actually a pretty smart form of marketing and helping younger actors take their place in the industry

In the 2012 we have japanese descendants amongst the voice actors, writers, etc. Besides, in my opinion Splinter being Hamato Yoshi is the least disrespectful way to approach the TMNT universe. I enjoyed the movie a lot, but some things that I couldn't quite word held me back from really LOVING it. You put most of those things into words in this video, so thanks ^^
Thinking about it now, my biggest issue is probably the thing you touched on regarding how the story seems unwilling to commit to its more intense emotional moments. It comes close but ultimately falls flat. I'm not sure if the writers or the studio are to blame for that, but either way... Idk maybe I handicapped my own enjoyment by comparing it to the Rise movie so much, since arguably one of the BEST things about that movie is its willingness to go all out with its more intense scenes (the prologue, Raph v. Leo, Casey's decision and Leo's sacrifice, etc)
MM is still a good movie tho, I'm excited to see what the future holds for this iteration of the turtles

At first, it didn't really vibe with me but after seeing the trailer and watching everyone move, it grew on me! It's very clay, Play Dough like and somehow, it makes the Turtles look more kiddy which matches what the plot is trying to do and how the voice actors and writers are portraying them! 13:32 You're actually right, there. Seth Rogen stated the movie wasn't going to have "long boring talking scenes". His biggest priority was having enough action in the film to keep the audience excited.
That sounds like he didn't want the story to drag, but there's a reason we need talking scenes in moves: to learn about the characters and cool down from the action.

Glad you brought up the 87 Nostalgia stuff. My biggest problem with TMNT since Viacom bought it, is that it's clearly doing a lot of Nostalgia bait for 87 fans, and 87 fans only. ROTTMNT is the exception. As someone who grew up on 03, I always jokingly say that I'm old enough to be mined for Nostalgia and Nick should realize that. But at the same time, it really does showcase how Nickelodeon tends to want to satiate older TMNT fans who remember the 87 series, more than it wants to try and actually create its own unique version of TMNT, as well as ignore anything that doesn't cater to it. Which is probably one of the biggest reasons Rise got cancelled, and they want to go forward with Mutant Mayhem. The 87 Nostalgia was also my biggest problem with 2012 and how it stopped it from being more unique and expanding on many of the new characters they created. Instead wanting to continually fallback on the characters of 87. IDK, I'm just tired of a franchise that is most of the time meant for kids continually feeling the need to cater to 40+ year old men who never got over their Saturday morning cartoons. And when they do, it's never in a way that is transformative and instead is very "Hey look, a thing you remember".

Honestly, talking about just the dialogue of the turtles here, I actually saw the movie along side my 15 year old brother and he said to me that, if it wasn't for the dialogue, he would have liked the movie. Because no one he knows talks like that! I dont know if this is mostly a problem of the spanish latin america dub or the og dub (I cant watch it in English yet), but yeah, I have to agree with him. Most of the dialogue said by the turtles in this movie feels like what an adult guy thinks modern kids talk like, and at best it doesn't feel natural, or at worst, it undermines the emotional moments in the film (like the milking scene). It's really is a shame couse I really like some moments in the film! But the entire movie? Not really... I can see why people like it, but its not for me at all. Especially after that ending...
That ending almost singlehandedly made me not want to watch the eventual show thats going to come out...

The casting of Jackie Chan as Splinter was such a hard pill to swallow because I really liked him otherwise. As you said in your video on Splinter, newer versions have been putting in more effort to break Splinter out of the "stern ninja master" stereotype, and this movie leaning more into the dad aspect of his character was a welcome touch for me. I was worried they'd go with the King Triton route and have him be violently destructive when it comes to the Turtles' desire to be a part of the human world, but it's a more relatively realistic take.
Splinter was subjected to hatred because of how different he looked, something that he's still traumatized by, but the boys were too young to fully remember or grasp, and he doesn't want them to go through that same trauma as teenagers. It's very reminiscent of how parents of color fear for how the world will treat their children once they go out on their own, emphasized further by the fact that two of the turtles are voiced by POCs, and as a black man that resonated with me. Even though Splinter was ultimately holding his sons back and needed to let go, this portrayal made me more willing to at least see where he was coming from as opposed to a character like, again, King Triton.
When Splinter found the boys' human clothes, I was fully expecting a scene where he lashes out at them and pushes his sons further away because that was what I expected from these kinds of dad characters, but no. He just tried to make his home more like the human world as best as he could (that being said he shouldn't have gone through their stuff to begin with, but... baby steps I guess?).
I say all this to say that this version of Splinter leaning more into the dad side than the ninja master side was so good in concept, with him teaching his kids martial arts as a way to give them a tool to defend themselves against a prejudiced world, and it was almost as good in execution, but... Jackie Chan? Really y'all? I love me some Jackie Chan, but there are plenty of Japanese VA's I'm sure would love to take on this role.
As a non-Asian, there's bound to be some blind spots in my analysis here, so feel free to call me on any blunders I've made. Thanks for the insightful critique!

As much as I enjoyed the film and think it's easily up there as one of the best TMNT films, I can't help but feel like that there was a missed opportunity with Splinter's backstory and his parallels with Superfly
We know that in the original comics that Splinter was the pet of Hamato Yoshi but was eventually killed by the Shredder. Sound familiar? It's almost identical to Superfly's backstory, both characters were close to a specific human that was killed in front of them, causing them both clear trama. I felt like if they went with that story, not only would it make more sense with Splinter knowing how to teach the turtles how to fight since Yoshi was a ninja and Splinter use to copy him, but it could've been a great way to make the similarities between the two characters stronger, with Splinter still grieving over Yoshi's death and not wanting to go though that pain again with his kids. Now it could be eventually be revealed that he did actually was Yoshi's pet but we'll have to wait and see

I didn't think it was bad or anything, and there were some really cool parts and the whole 4 in 1 fight sequence, but over all I was honestly just like 'meh'. It didn't GRAB me and keep my attention. I should probably have seen it in cinema rather than on a streaming service because at least in the cinema I wouldn't have been able to just flick through my phone when I was zoning out.
Although one thing that was interesting is that for the first time ever in a TMNT verse LEO was my favourite and not Mikey.
but .....I wont go out of my way to watch it again. I didn't enjoy the art style if i'm honest- the over wonkiness has never been an art choice i like. HOWEVER I am at least curious to give the TV series a go and see if i connect more with that but over all I'd give this movie a 6/10 max.

Why in the world would we wanna put the turtles into school?! I feel like that puts them into a literal corner because the lore is not presented in a good way either!!

Fantastic video! I also felt uncomfortable with Splinter. In particular, that scene where Mikey says "ratting us out" and everyone reacts as if he just used a slur was really not it because like...do y'all not have any Asian or Jewish writers?
There's also just the whole undercurrent of the turtles living as outsiders with the threat of violence and prejudice from their society that the movie does the sort of thing where the brutish Black-coded villain immediately jumps to the most violent solution to being a victim of prejudice possible so we can sympathize more with Splinter who sees himself in that and like...*groan.*
If I were the one writing TMNT, I would make April biracial and Hamato Yoshi is her father or grandfather and just skip the rat aspect entirely. Maybe give him a pet rat or something if you really wanted it and just have goofiness ensue from maybe them hiding the mutant turtles from the rest of the family or something.
That said, the movie was so very charming in other respects. I loved all the boys and I especially love how they took concepts of the kids that still rely on base traits but make sense for actual teens. Raph's "anger" for instance is he's that teen boy who does pushups every morning in his room because he doesn't have access to a gym and just needs to join a sport or something. Donnie doesn't even show his usual love of science and is a giant anime nerd. It feels very understandable and cohesive.
I really like that Splinter genuinely wants his boys to have the world which is why he bothered bringing them out in the first place. Those scenes where the boys have to rip themselves away from the outside world and they show the light disappearing from the manhole is easily some of the best the movie has to offer.
I still have a few concerns going into the series like the whole thing with Splinter you mentioned, the April/Leo crush (I would love it if they just kept it as a brief one-sided crush that later becomes a brother/sister duo but I don't want it to be a running thing), and the way they use slang which can veer into appropriation of AAVE very quickly.
Thank you for the shoutout btw! It's good to see you back on the scene.

holy shit are you me i had the exact same issue with superfly and splinter.
i felt like removing splinter from being asian kinda removed the baggage of making an asian man into a rat, and yeah its jackie chan playing him, but he doesnt act like jackie chan in the film other than his fight scene at the end. the fact that he taught him and his kids martial arts through watching kung fu and ninja movies is silly, but i had no issues with it. its like the movie was folding its influences back in on itself, because the 70s and 80s were the times people started to get into martial arts through media in america. it felt better to me than making him an asian man turned into a rat again.
and god superfly. you expressed exactly how i feel about superfly. in a funny way though, i think they handled april's character a little better. she's a bullied black teen, but not specifically because she's black but because she embarassed herself with her peers. making april more of an alt black girl with an issue gave her some dimension, although i wish it was given more depth. but this was subtly showing how black teens also get bullied, even if not necessarily for their skin color.

This review feels angry lmao had some really bright points when talking about the visual and audio work but you’re gonna shit on splinter?? He’s just a single dad tryna keep his boys out of trouble! I thought this was a great portrayal and to excuse the fight scene, his kids were being held hostage, as a dad I’d like to think I’d go just as hard.

Yeah I don't get what she was yapping about on splinter, my only complaint is that the design isn't as good as the 2012 version. But she seemed insisted on politicizing him like wtf

I’m pretty sure it was originally supposed to be a Leo movie. If you look at some of the concept art and cut storyboards there’s a confrontation between only Leo and superfly

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Is Getting a Sequel and a TV Series

  • @Ax0_1t01
    @Ax0_1t01 10 месяцев назад +4

I should preface this by stating the obvious, being that everyone has preferences, everyone has a favorite version of these characters, and bias is inescapable. I will also say that I do not intend to come off as aggressive or angry, just that I want to vent some of the thoughts that I have had regarding the tmnt franchise and fandom in general, and I'm not personally attacking anyone I mention.
That being said, @meat1939, @reina8284, and anyone else who leaves comments like these, I can see only two possible reasons for you to have posted them: either you didn't watch the review and are assuming from heybuwan's pfp and the thumbnail that anyone who liked rise just hates the more traditional iterations, or you watched the video and are blatantly disregarding the fact that she gave her legitimate gripes with the movie, none of which had to do with it being too traditional. She mentioned multiple times that her reasons for not liking Splinter have more to do with the casting stereotype and script of the movie not making him "traditional" in the sense that as far as we know, this Splinter is just some random rat, which takes away a core part of his identity that has been there since the original comics. She also never said that she didn't like the story because it was too similar to something we've seen before, but rather that it needed to be more focused on a single dynamic or a single character (such as Leo) which is something that we have seen in the majority of the tmnt movies.
It is okay to like the movie despite these and disagree with the points given, but writing off the review as a Rise fan not liking the movie because it isn't Rise is not only disrespectful towards the content creator, but it is a serious misjudgement of what makes a good critique of a piece of art. Never mind that she said she enjoyed the movie for the most part, and that her gripe with the story was the execution and not the premise. Never mind that the only three direct comparisons to Rise were 1) the April romance, which was NEVER a part of the "traditional" turtles and she praised for allowing the relationship between Leo and April to be explored, 2) Splinter whose main issues were, as was previously mentioned, casting (which is a part of "traditional" tmnt's legacy, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone defend THAT decision) and his identity, and 3) the script not being as impactful as it could have been due to not being focused. No, she's just a Rise fan hating on a return to form for the franchise.
In reality, every version of the turtles is unique and quite flexible in terms of story and characters, which is why it boggles my mind that after so many iterations people are still clinging on to their "ideal" turtles. What boggles my mind even more, though, is that it seems like half, possibly even more than half of the fandom has jumped on the bandwagon of hating on Rise because it is "too different." This movie had LOADS different, and yet people praise it to no end for having a few specific variables in common with their childhood turtles. This is not to say the movie is bad. If anything, it is exciting to see where the future takes us.
I am just so sick and tired of people being so close-minded and arbitrarily attacking anyone who sees differently than them, especially over something as rediculous as a world where New York's resident heroes are teenage mutant ninja turtles. The reason that I say this towards "traditional" fans and not Rise fans is because, as far as I've seen, only those who actually love these characters and are willing to accept whatever comes next for them so long as it is a good piece of art (which I realize I can never actually define, but I stand by) are fans of Rise. Or Rise is their first introduction to these characters, in which case they have as much a right to love it as anyone does to their first Turtles.
In the event that the people I have mentioned have for whatever reason returned to this video and somehow read all the way through this rambling comment, I am sorry for involving you, because this really isn't about you. Great video by the way, heybuwan.

Honestly, I loved Jackie Chan as Splinter. He's got great comedic timing and tone. I also don't think it's a stretch for Splinter to be Asian. New York is a very large diverse city, and it's not farfetched to think that the animals that end up being the mutants grew up with different cultural influences. Maybe this version of splinter grew up in China Town and was influenced by the culture there.

I do like the little extra touches they give the turtles these days, but (and this is just me and no one else) putting glasses on Donatello comes off as slightly tone deaf. It seems to imply (to me, at least) that a defining characteristic of tech savvy or even intelligence is the presence of glasses. First off that’s a stereotype that the nerd community was so close to moving past when Big Bang Theory popularized it. Secondly, it makes no sense to me, he doesn’t appear to wear a strap or anything, so if he’s fighting, how are his glasses staying on?

This movie actually really sucked for me because I grew up on the TMNT 2003 series, and it's just I missed the individuality of each Turtle. Like I feel that all four of them are different versions of Mikey now, and I understand that they're supposed to be like 15-year-old kids, but nowadays, 15 year old kids are really mature so they could have had like different personalities.
I miss like Donnie's lab and the fact that he actually invent stuff and not just like a tech nerd that loves his phone and I miss Leo's like seriousness and Leadership, And I miss Raphs wrath, angriness and brutality. And Mikey was like the only one on point, but he was so much more timid than before which is really weird because he is usually so outspoken. So it was weird to see him like be a goof ball, but also be kind of shy that was weird..
So it was like an okay movie. I'm not looking forward for the series, but I guess now nowadays kids like more mess and Silliness , and I didn't like the animation either, sorry, it's too messy for me, too many colors and too many objects everywhere. And they move like they are in a comic book. It feels like going back through the animation instead of moving forward.

I know nothing about teenage mutant ninja turtles. But I saw this new movie for the first time today. I was brought to tears with how loving Sprinter was as a father. From a new outsider perspective I thought it was so beautiful. I think his stance was very realistic. Not sure how the other versions normally handle it though maybe it's better elsewhere. But I loved him, and he ended up being my favorite character 😳theory for why he has an accent based on not much but it's possible- maybe Mandarin is his first language. He is underground alone with no one, it makes sense he'd master the language and possibly even end up having an accent because that's the sole media he subjects his time to his whole life.

I tried watching this movie now that it's out on digital (health wise I still cant go out to theaters) and watched it with my partner - were both huge comic book nerds and grew up on the older TMNT movies and shows as well as the comics, and we couldn't get past Splinter's backstory. It took us so out of the movie that we could not finish watching the movie, it felt almost wrong taking out what made Splinter be, well, Splinter. His backstory is so crucial to the Turtles story that not including any of it and making it so that the "grand master" learned everything from movies and videos feel just... off and tone deaf. I don't mind when movies and shows poke fun at the source material but doing it in the way they did felt almost borderline offensive. It's rare for me to stop watching a movie because of changes especially in newer films taking a different spin on the original source material - hell I sat through the entirety of the new Transformers movie despite being heavily disappointed and frustrated with it, something about this movie though... I want to like it and watch it fully, but I just cant get into it.

Im really glad someone talked about splinter, he had to be one of the movies most confusing points for me. As much as I love the family moments, I just couldn't get behind the fact he was just a rat that happened to have an asian accent? Yeesh. And when he voiced over his backstory it gave the vibes, from a viewing standpoint that he always would have had an asian accent from mutation- Double yeesh..

    *Small spoiler alert/easter egg*
"The lady" that tried to milk them was Cynthia Uutrom. The Krang species were called Utrom in the older series before the CGI one. That woman is a Krang inside of a humanoid robot! Just like the original show! Also (spoiler alert) fact that Shredder shows up tasked as a merc for the sequel was hype!

I really enjoyed your review of this film. 12:25 This part really interested me, the thematic similarities between Splinter and Superfly, and having Leo play a role in those themes would have made for a more engaging story. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I do kinda wish they leaned more into that aspect. Despite that though, I’m looking forward to watching this film.
