All the effort goes into 4Ks and Blu-rays. I usually import mine from Japan, anime or otherwise. They put more care into packaging and on-disc content design, and give bonus goods, like how Japanese Marvel 4Ks come with complementary 3D and Blu-ray copies, plus gifts like mugs.

I'm sick of companies producing piss poor physical media. There's no reason why standard def DVD's are still a thing. It literally cost pennies on a dollar to buy a blu-ray player nowadays. Blu-ray discs can hold a lot more space and preserve the overal quality of the footage. Not to mention it minimizes the amount of discs companies have to produce. Hence allowing you to preserve more shelf space in your collection. People shouldn't have to deal with this anymore.

    • @doofusdan_

It’s really frustrating seeing companies insist it’s the most viable format. The argument used to be that dvds were far more accessible since not everyone had a blu-ray player. With your point that blu-ray players are rather cheap now they really don’t have an excuse anymore.

@doofusdan_ to make a long story short for the z home media releases
The dvd singles are the best way to watch the show even if the first 17 volumes are English only and are censored (remember this is the ocean dub).
The orange bricks are terrible and unfortunately gaslighted every casual fan into thinking it was this 16:9 overly saturated and blindingly bright show.
The dragon box set is a fan favorite despite the colors being degraded and the sound effects being a bit off time unfortunately this set is stupid expensive to own now.
The level up blu ray is amazing as it's a good hd scan of the show unfortunately it was canceled only two volumes in.
The blu ray season sets are somehow even worse than the orange bricks as not only is it cropped to 16:9 again the cropping is worse as its cuts off more stuff from the top and bottom the video quality is worse than the dvds.
The steel books are awful as it's just the blu ray season sets but without the cropping and they didn't even do that correctly as not only was it advertised like it's something people should look forward to, it's not even the correct aspect ratio so it's somehow worse

Their DVD releases of Jimmy Neutron, Angry Beavers, Wild Thornberry's, CatDog and their out-of-print versions of Rocko's Modern Life and Hey Arnold felt like they are made with love and care with stuff like reliable packaging and disc art. Paramount used to do a good job on Nick DVDs until the mid to late 2000s where the quality is slipping. @doofusdan_ Oldman is right. There's no separation between seasons with each of the 03 discs, so the start of season 2 will be on the same disc as the end of season 1. There also isn't any sort of episode guide in the case like what is in the 2012 case. The only thing you get is what you see on the outside cover, and then plain grey discs with "Episodes 1-9", Episodes 10-18" etc. on each disc. The discs will probably be loose in that dogshit case as well. I've put every individual disc into their own cases because of that. The last episode of the show also uses the censored version, and Turtles Forever isn't the extended cut, and is actually a trimmed down version from the standalone home video release. So it's basically an even shorter version of the short version of the movie, which is crazy. The 03 set was even more of a lazy box set than the 2012 one. There are other issues as well like the inconsistentpicture quality that Oldman mentioned (it didn't really bother me too much, though, but one would expect it to be better than it is), but at least every episode of the show is finally available on DVD, so it's worth it if you value actually owning physical media. However, don't expect something stellar. No joke, I've seen bootleg box sets that are better quality and more lovingly put together than the "official" release. Unfortunately, it's simply a quick cash grab, and another "fuck you" to the 03 TMNT fans. It was thrown out just so they can say "There. You got it. Shut up now." The fact that it isn't available in stores like Walmart should tell you everything. It's only available online.

@@oldman5247 I haven't picked this set up yet. I likely will at some point when it is on a good sale. I mainly want it for the Back to the Sewer episodes. I have the previous DVD releases from years ago. While the episodes are out of order on some of the sets, from what I understand the quality is better overall (more on that in a bit). But regarding the order of the episodes on this new complete series set, and how the seasons break down, me being the nerd I am when it comes to these things, and here is what I figured out:
Discs 1-13 add up to Seasons 1-5. The discs are not separate by season (meaning one season ends and the next starts in the middle of the same disc), BUT these are the seasons that were when the show was simply titled TMNT. Discs 14-16 are all of Season 6 and the first episode of Season 7, or in other words, all of Fast Forward. Even though Season 7 is the "Back to the Sewer" season, the first episode picks up when they are still in the future and still uses the FF intro. So like I said, it is all of FF. Discs 17 and 18 are the rest of Season 7 (back to the sewer) and Turtles Forever.
While it does stink that these are not properly separated by seasons, it is at least nice that they are separated by when the show changes title. If someone wanted to move the discs into better cases than what this comes in, and make/print custom covers, they could separate them by the title changes and in the case of season 1-5, just give them volume numbers if multiple cases are needed.
From what I understand, Turtles Forever on this set is TERRIBLE. Supposedly the video quality is really bad, and it is even more cut up than the previous Paramount/Nickelodeon DVD release of it (which was already the TV version and not the extended cut). So if you get this set, it is highly advised to still get either the stand along release of Turtles Forever, or import the UK DVD which is the extended version (but is region locked).
One this that disappoints me about this release (and is part of why I haven't gotten it yet and I'm wait for a REALLY GOOD sale), and is becoming far too common of a problem with old tv shows released on DVD these days, is that while the show is of course 4:3, the DVD itself is formatted to be 16:9, which the black bars on the sides of the screen being an embedded part of the image. This may not seem like a big deal when watching on a modern TV, but it does result in a lower quality image than having it properly formatted at 4:3 on the disc, and then letting the equipment (TV, player) add in the black bars. Plus I still have some old 4:3 CRT TVs that I use for retro gaming, and sometimes I may watch an old TV show DVD on them. Having these formatted in this way screws that up, adding black bars to the top and bottom, and basically making the show be a small square in the middle of the screen surrounded by black on all sides.

I'm not too fond of this DVD box format for any show. They cram the discs tightly over top each other where you're forced to extract a few in order to find the proper one where you last left off at, increasing the chances of wear and tear, and are generally unreliable as protective storage with the discs constantly jangling. It's also not uncommon to find some top discs tumbling out of their holds every time you either first open the box or turn an interior section.

The case feels like I might snap the disc every time I have to do the math to find the episode I want ( there isn’t any guide that tells you what episode is on what disc. by the way. )
Update as I’m writing this comment: I TOOK OUT MY BOXSET TO CHECK. It Does have a list of the episodes, but it fucking !! It does the same thing the tmnt 2012 boxset does where there’s discs on the inside that are covering the list of episodes !! So I just straight up didn’t know, I don’t rewatch season one of the show very often, and I literally opened the second dvd case for the first time to check that one too, because I don’t rewatch seasons 5-7 very often either. It’s also extremely difficult to take out the discs, which feels like. Really shitty. Cause I feel like the larger audience that might be buying this boxset nowadays are older people that liked the show when they were younger, who might not have amazing hand strength anymore. Making it so extremely difficult to take out the discs is just doing a disservice to your Main customer demographic !! And same with the tmnt boxset, their demographic is kids, and kids are just generally uncoordinated and might still be building grip strength. I'm surprised you didn't call out that the SpongeBob discs are colorful and each associated with a character, making them easy to tell apart at a glance and making them all look varied, while TMNT all has blank, boring silver text on silver background, making it not just hard to figure out which disc is which, but also making it very hard to read and just all blend together into one visual mess.

A very informative video! I guess you get what you pay for in this case, a cheap set made carelessly. It's maddening that they didn't do the most basic thing and list the DISC TITLES on the sleeve instead of just disc numbers. They didn't need to touch the discs at all to do that much but they didn't even do that. The disc holders are absolutely intolerable, the Lionsgate complete TMNT 1987 set has the same issue and I literally only bought it so I could get a free copy of the digital version on Vudu. It's beyond a shame that 2012 and Rise didn't get Bluray releases, Rise didn't even get more than a few single DVDs...
I collected each volume of the original singles (as I did with every TMNT animated series) so there's no reason for me to grab this even though it would take up a lot less shelf space. I did buy it digital to have an HD copy and for the convenience but I waited for a killer sale when it was 25 dollars. TMNT fans always seem to get the shaft when it comes to DVD releases and we don't even get a sniff of Blu-ray besides the movies.

It really is baffling how a series as long running and as popular as TMNT has very little in terms of high quality home media. Not saying 87 is high art but I feel at this point it deserves a crisp blu-ray release.

I have 2 South Park DVD boxsets, and oh my lord, the case is god awful! Each side isn't labelled, and the disc holders easily fall off. The way the discs are layered can cause scratches and more. I wish I got the Blu-ray, but HMV only had them on DVD...

I really like the box sets with a cardboard sleeve and a bunch of really thin cases for each DVD. I have the Samurai Champloo complete series boxset and I love it. Every disc is in it's own thin case with unique art for each, and it tells you which episodes are on which disc. sadly you don't see box sets using that format much anymore

My version of the complete TMNT 2012 dvd set didn't have the Return to NYC disc and instead gave me another copy of Super Shredder disc 1. I've been trying to find other ways of watch those episodes on Return to nyc, but I've come empty handed. Paramount plus and Netflix only had seasons 1 and 2 avaliable, meaning that Return to nyc is part of season 3, and I don't have the money to buy them digitally. But I want to buy them digitally, because like you said, I like having a physical copy of that movie or show on my shelf that I can just put on whenever I feel like it.

I feel like the design of the Avatar/Legend of Korra Blu-Rays is worse, if only because it not only risks destroying your discs, but can cause actual physical harm to unsuspecting viewers.
They don't even include an episode list (which would be pretty handy for an episodic show), and the case has the opposite problem, where the discs essentially sit on short pegs, meaning that if you don't put the set on a table like a book, you have a very high chance of dropping *multiple* discs on their edge, where they will end up rolling to who-knows-where, or potentially crack on impact, ruining the set before you even have a chance to watch the first disc. The discs will also just rattle around in the case, which while not terrible because they are scratch resistant, still isn't ideal.
They also haven't edited episodes in any way from what I can tell. Unrelated episodes that aired together (The Serpents Pass and The Drill, for instance) on TV are still listed as the same episode on the box set, just stitched together into a 44 minute blob with a title card in between. Not to mention the intense flashing that really strains your eyes during lightning bending, especially in LoK Book 1, I have to wonder how they got past legal without an epilepsy warning at the start.
