I know it's not for everyone but AA meetings can be helpful, I know a lot of people think they're only for "serious" alcoholics but they're really for anyone who's struggling with their drinking and they can teach you methods for getting through those more difficult moments. You obviously need to have a life and alcohol is very prevalent in society so it's something that's really tough to avoid altogether. I'm 28 and I've never drank in my life. I never wanted to when I was younger and then once I started to consider it, my therapist told me it was good I didn't drink because it would make my anxiety worse. Eventhough my anxiety and depression has gotten worse, I'm glad I didn't go down that route because I would probably be in an even worse place. It definitely makes social gatherings harder for me, but I think learning how to handle a social gathering without a substance is something that I hope is a good thing. I will probably never touch it because I can't risk my mental health. Congratulations on your choice, I wish you the best of luck. I am in my 40s and I've never been drunk. I think I've had about three sips of alcohol in my life. The reason? I saw how alcohol affected my sister and my mother and I did not want to be anything like them. (My mum did take herself to rehab and she was sober for at least 20 years. I was very proud of her.) I don't do drugs either. Can't stand them. Congratulations on your choice. I wish you and Hannah nothing but the best of luck!

Well done Stef! Sounds amazing. I've always been a "light weight" so never been a big drinker but these days (aged 34 with 2 kids), I barely ever drink, even if I go out with friends I don't feel the pressure to drink in the way I did when I was younger. I think the biggest reason is I don't really get that relief and relaxation most people get from alcohol. I like the taste of a gin and tonic or a cocktail but I enjoy it just as much if its a non-alcoholic version, so drinking alcohol just ends up being an expensive way to get a headache!
I found it very interesting when you talked about anxiety about social situations without alcohol as I tend to feel more socially anxious if I do end up drinking because I'm worried that I'll start speaking too loudly or make an embarrassing joke or say something I'll regret the next day. Basically alcohol = losing control and no alcohol = in control for me, which probably means I have other issue haha but this video definitely sparked some interesting conversations so thank you!

I've battled drinking from the age of 25 to 45 because I found myself living for the weekends and not happy with my choice of work carrier. I would drink through the week to cope with life and binge drink with friends on weekends when possible. At 45 I emotionally knew I was failing in life by my choices and actions from alcohol. At 47 I found my passion for the outdoors to be more true to myself, so I started a tube channel for fishing and camping. I am happy to say that I found myself before loosing everything I had embracing me like my wife and kids to the true friends that were not abusers. Good luck with your journey. I stopped at the end of January of this year and it has been the best decision. For anyone out there, who like me, struggled with going back and forth about this decision, it has to come from you and there will be something that will make it click and once that happens, you can do it cold turkey! There are also plenty of non alcoholic options that you will enjoy. I've heard people say "Call me when you can have a drink again" or make comments about how they couldn't do it (which is fair) but don't let that plant a seed of doubt! You can do it!
    Since I stopped drinking,
-My anxiety and depressive periods are less
    - I lost over 35lbs
    - I get up early and exercise
    - I am a better parent
    -More disposable income
    - More goals
    -I feel clearer
    -I look younger.

In my early twenties I partied more often than I probably should have but somewhere in my mid to late twenties I discovered I REALLY don’t like vomiting or feeling like crap the next day, wasting so much money on alcohol or the ramifications of poor decision making. These days I’ll have a drink whenever the mood strikes, but it only seems to strike 5 or 6 times a year, if that.
Alcohol is a depressant so probably not the best choice if you already have depression or anxiety. Also alcohol is not the healthiest thing we can put in our bodies, regardless of any emotional issues. If drinking is problematic or is potentially becoming problematic, then appropriate steps can always be taken. I think it’s wonderful you recognize a potential problem and are choosing what is best for you and your family! 🥂 Cheers (with sparkling apple juice or non-alcoholic beer or my personal favorite - water on the rocks with a wedge of lemon) to feeling better and to your 1000 days of sobriety to come! 👏🏻 🎉👏🏻 I support your decision to stop drinking 100%! Well done!

I've been surrounded by alcohol for two years at university, I know that's nothing for a lot of people, but I've come to the realisation that the obsession with it, does border on an addiction - it's so normalised. I've done some terrible things under the influence of alcohol, especially when I use it as a coping mechanism and it's just not worth it. Since this realisation I've tried sober nights out, even going to the club, (although it's a little bit disturbing sometimes haha) if you're with your friends and there's good energy, you can bounce off of other people and it can be even more of a fun time. I know you've got this Steph, I think living life as it is, unfiltered, completely sober, and just enjoying it, is a truly wonderful thing. Best of luck!

Ok so..I am from Greece and live in Uk for the past 8 years! In Greece when in family gatherings etc people tend to give the little ones a sip of beer or light alcoholic drink if they ask to try..what I want to say is that the bigger the deal society makes about it the more ‘curious’ and impatient to try this “miracle” people get! In Uk for some reason alcohol is a big deal starting from supermarkets and restrictions etc to families drinking without kids watching ..I think its just part of our life and not big deal really! I am not an alcohol drinker at all but always fascinates me how obsessed people get with alcohol here..btw I love Uk and do not want to seem arrogant towards the matter but I think we should not make a big fuss about it either! Great job for quitting..life is beautiful when you can actually live it and feel it..we do not have to dull our feelings bad or good..they are all good..well done again and enjoy life and your beautiful family ❤️

Im the same but for me ‘just today’ isnt enough (thats just me I respect everyones own needs). I get motivated by a bigger target. From everything I’m listening to, the first three months are the hardest in terms of brain reset chemically, habit breaking, sleep normalization, etc. so I’m setting my target at six months in 2024
but I truly hope to go the entire year.
I’m on day two right now 😅🙏🏻and I may allow myself a single cheers on New Year’s Eve, but I have some really beautiful nonalcoholic bubbles, so that might not even be an issue

Sheer determination and still liking the idea of alcohol/leaving the door open is often sadly a recipe for relapse eventually (I know, because I've been there) Once you realize that alcohol does nothing positive for you, and really only hurts you, it get easier. Once you feel happy about not needing/wanting to have a drink, instead of feeling sad or deprived, it's a game changer. I don't say this AT ALL to come off as unsupportive, any reason not to drink is a good one, just that changing your perspective can make a huge difference. Keep up the great work, and good luck on your journey!

I have been oscillating between sober months off alcohol, cutting down then going back to my previous levels of binge drinking for the past 2 years. Woke up with a terrible hangover yesterday after not drinking for 41 days and realised I AM DONE. I just don't want the stress anymore. This time I don't feel like I'm giving anything up, I've just got positive things to gain. I'm aiming to stay away from alcohol for 6 months and never go back to bingeing. At my age its getting embarrassing and I obviously have a bit of a problem.

@@edenangel2267 I know all too well about the disappointment. I keep telling myself "one day at a time". I'm not into AA, but that phrase helps me with the disappointing days. I'm 62 and may never quit permanently, but if I can limit it and continue forgiving myself, it helps. I've gone 5 years, 1 year, sometimes 3 or 4 months, but always end up congratulating myself and having another drink. One day!

I always had the feeling that alcohol played a big role in your lives. Maybe I am super sensitive about it because people who are close to me struggle with alcoholaddiction and that is why I probably pay more attention to it. So so great you made this choice!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Me and my husband haven't drunk in over a year ..and I don't miss it. But I miss the ease of not having to explain myself to people. Everytime I ever go out I have to justify why I am not drinking. It's exhausting and also makes you think that your friends clearly can't socialise with me in a sober setting🤣 but I'm now super aware of how much people round me drink and it enforces that I made the right decision

well done guys and thank you for sharing! I also deal with crippling anxiety and since seeing a therapist for childhood trauma and slowly finding myself through yoga and a spiritual connection, I realised my desire for drinking has started to decline rapidly and the less I do it and the more time increases between nights out with booze the better and more myself I feel. It also massively helps that through my journey of truth and self discovery the people who have become my friends also seem to hardly ever drink! Also love your T shirt haha :)

Good on you ! I’ve started seriously thinking of quitting alcohol. It definitely triggers my depression and anxiety but for some reason I still drink. It’s wild how common drinking is when you really look around so good on you for making a positive change

I managed to stop and stay sober for 10 years. 10. Then I thought it might be ok to have a single beer on a hot day. It wasn't.... Now I'm in trouble again and desperate to stop.... Again.

I just saw your vid for advice. I quit 5 years, then one year a couple times, now it's like 3months off and back. I keep trying. My mom always said, "count your successes." I hope you're still doing well after 5 months. 💖💗💓💞

I'm watching videos on quitting alcohol, First step? It's hard, come 6pm I'm drinking. I am sick of buying alcohol, sick of hiding how much I drank the night before. First session with some drink service next week. fingers crossed. Respect. J.

Ugh, I’m right there with you. Newly sober at 43 for health reasons. It’s hard because being sober doesn’t feel like something I chose but rather something I HAVE to do. I’m sure it’ll get easier with time. I really wish alcohol wasn’t such a big part of my social life previously, lots of good times. Thankfully, people are pretty understanding when you’re in a social setting and you tell them you’re not drinking for health reasons, definitely stops the pushiness.
We can do anything we set our minds to, it’s just rarely ever going to be easy to do big things.

I'm on my second week of tapering off my forty year drinking habit. I am down to three drinks a day...every day. I've cut my drinking down by 50%. If I could quit for a month, that would be a gift from heaven. Next week I'm trying for only two drinks a day. My goal is to be drink free by June 15th🙏

Good luck mate, been almost two years for me and it's awesome. One thing I would say is that the alcahol free beers just remind you of drinking and be weary of them.
Hands down the best thing I ever did though, mental clarity and feeling more yourself is better than anything booze does for you.

I always think about stopping it completely but still haven’t found the strength to do it. My issue is that I became pretty dependent on it to start the with to help with emotional pain. But overtime the alcohol ended up creating low self esteem, social anxiety, hangxiety, and I feel like crap physically. But the issue always seems to be that while your drinking it’s the cure and then after it’s the disease. So it’s just a circle.

@John J that sounds amazing and all. However some can’t just have a little. Myself included. It’s way easier for me to just not drink at all then limit after I’ve started. Because why? I happen to know about all the fun shit that comes with the rest of those beers. Damn. The times I had. They don’t outweigh the next day blues though. I’ve been sober since I watched this video first. A little over two weeks. I smoke my grass and pinch off the shrooms. Fuck booze altogether. No one’s mind needs to be chemically tampered with. I say to all ye that can drink one or two and stop… we’re not worthy! One day at a time folks. Keep it real

I loved your video. I have struggled with alcohol abuse for about four or five years. I went for quite a long stretch a year and a half. Sober and I recently relapsed for about eight days and went into the hospital for help and found out I was!!! so it’s more important now than ever for me to not drink

Both of my parents suffer from addictive personalities, the main “drug” being alcohol. From my experiences seeing them at their worst when i was a youngling, i swore off booze.
Obviously when i reached the appropriate age, it was then introduced to me as a natural stimulant that can help provide a more exciting experience of life, when used at the right times.
Being almost 27 now, I’d love to say that i don’t have an obsession with it, but i definitely use it as a confidence/personality booster most times.
I can also see how that can compound into a much more serious situation later in my life &
with that being said, I love the month on, month off idea!
Looking to implement that same structure into my everyday life ✊🏽.
    much appreciation for the video
