Same here glen...not leslie...but I play a LP junior. JOHNNY in long island new York , oak beach inn. Early 80s. Unbelievable...then all over the northeast. Casino in new Hampshire... massive Chinese restaurant in Massachusetts with great harmonica player Jim..I forget. Lol. Right up to day before passing at a tiny club in ogunquit Maine. Nobody ever complained about his lack of mobility or his declining skills. I had the fortune to see Mountain about 10X with Felix on bass and Johnny Winter 2X. The first time I saw both was at Woodstock as well as the first time I saw Hendrix who I saw 3X and Stevie Ray Von 1X. I feel so blessed.
Such a nice video showing the contrast between Johnny's and Leslie's approach to the blues. Leslie playing "talking" leads that sound just a bit like BB King while Johnny shreds along in a manner more like Buddy Guy. And it sounds just great. Rest in peace, guys....
Love the version of highway 61 he did at Bob Dylan's birthday show at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN.ROCK IN PEACE,☮️ YOUR PRESENCE IS MISSED BUT YOUR MUSIC LIVES ON 🎸🎸🎸
Seen JOHNNY 8 times... early 80s standing up the whole show with his firebird...unbelievable...2000s sitting the whole show with featherweight custom guitar for his very frail body. Always given the firebird for the oncor. The excitement and applause for JOHNNY at all these shows was identical... people screamed and clapped for one of the greatest bluesmen in rock guitar history. Leslie had a leg cramp on a plane...landed and 3 hours later...his leg was amputated. Beginning of the end for the great big Jewish bluesman and rocker . Diabetes taking him too early.
I was able to see Johnny, Edgar and Leslie West all together in the same night just before Johnny passed away. Rip Johnny you were one hell of a musician.
i grew up in the 70's and thankfully got to see johnny live at least 7, or 8 times. Saw Leslie too, after Mountain had disbanded, but a Johnny Winter concert was always an hour and half of great live music. Always loved that johnny would bring james cotton or any number of chicago blues men as his opening act. R.I.P. JDW
+Nancy Albin Mine too, Could be apocryphal but Jimi was once asked "What's like being the best guitar player in the world?" Jimi answered "I don't know you'll have to ask Johnny"

Seen 'em both many times. Almost saw them together like this. It was a tour with Kim Simmonds, Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter, Johnny Winter & Leslie West. Kim Simmonds played first, then Rick Derringer. Edgar Winter played after Derringer with the same band backing. It was announced Leslie West had been hospitalized & wouldn't be performing tonight. We learned later, he had his leg removed because of diabetes. Then, Johnny come out sitting like this. It was the last, of many times seeing him perform. The last time I had seen Leslie was about 25 years before that night & was really looking forward to seeing him. Both of them remain staples in my music selections.
Love Leslie West of the awesome band Mountain, loved their "theme to an imaginary western" for example. Love JW also, so underrated. Two greats doing another greats songs, as good as it gets!
I never got to see Leslie West. But I got to see Johnny where I could literally touch himy feet were on the stage. One of the most memorable things I've ever seen, they're a machine.
