My 3rd Range Rover is spec'd pretty much as reviewed. Great review by Matt, and I want to add my 2c's worth. * The cost of ownership is high, but only to be expected from a complex vehicle. During the week, it's an A8, 7-series or 550 S-class competitor that is used for visiting clients. * In weekends, mine is used to take 4-5 people back country skiing & mountain biking. Driving on snow covered forest roads in winter, mud and stream crossings in summer and I have never had a moment of concern about the capability of the RR. New owners, go to Land Rover driving school to learn about the capabilities of the vehicles.
Matt just to let you know I love you sense of humour in your videos. All your little comments and subtle jabs at what ever always get me laughing during your videos. Also your reveiws are very reliable and a pleasure to watch... Thanks for all your time spent
I haven't driven a G-Wagon off-road yet. And to be perfectly honest, I'm not the biggest fan of them on the tarmac. It's such an old platform that, despite its capabilities, it's just behind in so many ways. I would love to try one off-road, though. The new Rover was amazing off road, especially considering it had all-season tires for our test.
I appreciate your come back. I think most people commenting in a negative way on car videos are just spoiled rotten by youtube without ever having had any real experience with fast cars. The most obvious is the "I'd get the GTR/ZR1 because it is a fraction of the price of a Huayra/million dollar car" . There are so many more aspects to a car than performance. The most fun I've ever had in a car was the Peugot 1.8 and Jaguar s typeR Supercharger 400 hp. Totally different cars but..damn :)
After tuning in for so long.. its amazing how all i can ask for is.. MORE. Keep it up Matt! Stepping outside of the norm for you I really enjoy. Thank you.
the system is by meridian. I think there is only one sub, but it's integrated into the frame. The system is insane, the best car stereo I've ever heard. I tested it with Rise Against, Jay Z, and live AC/DC. Thunderstruck Live was nuts.
You and Chris Harris are the best two car-reviewers all over the place, really no better source for emotional, true and well made car videos, neither in television nor in the internet. Keep up the great work! :) Greets from Germany
Excellent review. Thanks to RR, this is one of my favorite smoking tire reviews i've seen. nothing makes me want to buy this car more than what i saw in this vid.
there is no other audio to use. Would you prefer wind rushing by a go-pro? You have to use some kind of background audio to cut together a video and make it sound decent.
We have owned about a dozen range rovers at gotham dream cars, ranging from 2004 to 2012. In our experience, any full-size range rover built after 2007 is significantly more reliable than anything built before then.
I have to say that I really enjoy your videos Matt. I can totally appreciate car reviews made by Csere CSaba (Chubber Cheddar) because of his no nonsense approach to cars but it is nice to also see a guy expressing a genuine almost kid like delight driving all kinds of awesome cars like you do. I'm 38 and most of my friends have for the most part lost that care free joy of things. Being grown up should not mean that driving a fast car should be driven like it doesn't matter! You rock :)
really nice review, it amazes me how it can do decent off-roading on street tires imagine how great it would be if its fitted with some good off-road rubber
some trucks can be luxurious in terms of their appointments, but no pickup truck will ever have the ride quality of a range rover. Off-roading usually beats the hell out of my (extremely sensitive) spine, and after a day in the Rover, I was good to go. The difference from my (very capable) Ford Raptor was clear as day.
At gotham dream cars we've had several range rovers in our fleet, and as you can imagine, a rental company is the ultimate durability test. Every one we've had that was built after 2007 has been rock solid. Before that they were a mess.
First-owners probably wouldn't. It's the second and third owners that actually go off-roading in them. So few people would be willing to subject their $100,000+ vehicle to that kind of use, but there were 14 RR's on that trip, and none of them got damaged in any way.
The useful life of a range rover was quoted by one of their engineers as 10 years or 120,000 miles. I'd say as long as you're under that you're good to go.
Who cross-shops a Raptor with a Mustang, small BMW Sedan, or even smaller Porsche? I didn't need a sports car, I didn't need a sporty sedan, I needed a truck. And the Raptor is the best half-ton truck money can buy. Some people buy Raptor's to use them as toys, and that's cool, but I needed a pickup truck and compared to other factory pickup trucks, the Raptor is actually very reasonably priced for what you get. Plus, as Saw4Fire mentioned, the resale is the highest in Ford's entire history
If you're implying that because it's an Aluminum unibody rather than Steel, the people at Land Rover spent about 20 minutes telling us why the new construction is actually safer than the old one. It may require more of a specialist to repair in the event of a crash, but it's a very safe car. I'm grateful I didn't have to learn about the safety features the hard way.
Reason you weren't invited to the previous Generation releases and now you're invited to latest one is you've made a name for yourself as an automotive journalist, You're doing great, Keep it up!. I like your objective views on every car, german, asian or domestic.
Just drove one of these on a muddy trail for 2 hours. It was awesome. The thing will almost drive itself. Just choose a good line and apply a little throttle and the vehicle will take care of the rest. Its really a big thing for tight trails though. I was sweating when I had to squeeze it between two trees with inches to spare on slick mud.
Very amazing car, A close friend of mine just bought a Range rover I think btn 03 to 06. He loves that thing, He rides in it like a King on the road with one of his hand out of the window. Beautiful Amazing car and Amazing review as well.
exactly. I love the new Range Rover because it's powerful, but not trying to be a Cayenne Turbo. In fact, I wouldn't even buy the supercharged model. The Range Rover is as nice inside as a Bentley, as capable off-road as a Rubicon, and (in urban areas, anyway) relatively unassuming while keeping the occupants snuggled in a blanket of luxury and multimedia awesome. In places like NY, with terrible roads, this would be a much better option than a full size luxury sedan.
I'd argue that since Range Rover switched to the 5.0L V8 shared with Jaguar, rather than the older BMW engine, their reliability has improved. At Gotham Dream Cars we've had about 12 different Range's from '05 to '11, and anything built 2008 or later we haven't had any issues with whatsoever. And remember, these are rental cars, which is the ultimate durability test.
It may be $35k less than the Supercharged model I tested, but the base price of a new Lexus LX570 is $81,530, only $2,000 less than the base price of the new Range Rover. My tester was pretty loaded up.
no, i wish they did though. That would be the one to have. They gave me a very corporate reason as to why they don't, and I was drunk so I don't remember the particulars of the conversation, but the gist of it was that the engineers do want to sell the diesel here but in order to do it they would have to make all their other vehicles unreasonably efficient to offset the extra carbon emissions from a diesel engine.
The Rover has a shorter wheelbase and an adjustable height suspension that actually has more ground clearance than the Raptor, so it's better for rock crawling. The Raptor is obviously better for the faster washes, but the Range is also better at fording rivers and has smarter traction control and differentials that make technical stuff way easier than in a Raptor.
Great review Matt, is it the Autobiography edition one that has that crazy front centre console that changes depending upon which seat you are looking at it from?
Great review Matt, just to add on the system, watts rarely mean much. Meridian is more of a cinema/audiophile company so i would expect it to sound great. As for your hearing, is it better now? I am seriously considering getting this thing hopefully before the end of the year question is how does it compare to the merc ML 550?
While yes, I am turned off by what people with no taste do with their Range Rovers, I can finally accept that what people choose to do with them is not the fault of the car itself, which is an amazing vehicle from the factory.
I mean, I can't guarantee anything, only share what we've personally experienced, and in our experience if you get one with the JLR engine as opposed to the earlier BMW motor you're better off. We haven't had to do anything with our range Rovers except the normal service, and in one instance replace a leaky radiator on a 2006 model for a few hundred bucks. That's it.
We've always loved the look and interior of Range Rovers but the maintenance bill always scared us off from getting one. The fast falling value make them fairly cheap to buy used when compared to showroom prices. Would you recommend one used say 2007 and on? Any data you can offer for average maintenance costs?
Must have been a great trip. I recognize those bridge shots as being from the dam at Lake Powell. A lot of beautiful sights in that area that I explored on a recent road trip. Some higher speed dirt roads nearby that I'd rather be in a Raptor than a Range Rover too.
Meridian makes some really cool home theater and 2 channel extreme audio specializing in digital. Even some of the most 2 channel analog or die hifi snobs are shocked by the sound of the arguably best digital (cd compressed source with active crossovers and time delay control +) sound reproduction. As far as I know this is the first car audio they have done. I can't wait to hear it. I have to say if you lost your hearing for 2 days, honestly, it can't be that clean. Nice SUV for sure!
Great SUV that seems to have gotten better. Crazy that is able to climb up those rocks with 21 inch tires that are all season, would be interesting to see it with 18 inch wheels and off road tires. That interior looks perfect.
Great truck. Can't find one to test drive anywhere though. Sat in it at the auto show though and it is fantastic. Definitely on par with my S Class, maybe better. Now that it has a pano roof and massage seats, it is the perfect vehicle.
I have had my 2007 Range Rover Sport for 6 years now and drove 180'000 KLM on it and never had any problems ! only Oil Change and Brake Pads !!! now that's a Great car .
At 9:17, is that the Navajo Bridge in Arizona? I drove through there just a month ago (beautiful scenery all around the area) and it looks very similar to that bridge.
I dont know, I take my $50,000 "luxury" sport truck to the desert to thrash on all the time, sometimes for work, sometimes for fun. It's just that most people buy way more car than they need, whereas I buy exactly the amount of car that I need for a given job.
Perfect example of good overall car appreciation. I hate comments on car videos that says "The (insert car) goes to 60 in 1.5 seconds faster but costs 100 thousand dollars less". There are so many more aspects to a car than just the obvious numbers.
The intro was cool.. Showed the real owners of Range Rover. I saw previous edition sport model in Manhattan parked on 5th Avenue all muddy and dirty.. And i said to myself now that's a proper Range Rover.
Tuned, on average, has more views per episode than Chris Harris does this year. Just sayin. And i love Chris Harris. And the most disappointing thing I heard from a RR engineer was that the car's "intended useful life," is 10 years or 120,000 miles. Thanks matt, for making a review of a great off road platform such as the range rover. Might change the view of a few americans obsessed about cheap pickups. Off road in road tyres that just proves a point of how good range rovers are. ;)
Except for the shared gear knob (which I think is eh, all right in the Range Rover), I'm SO glad that JLR hasn't just made them versions of each other; I'm glad the Jaguar XJ isn't just a saloon version of the Range Rover. Thanks for sharing your experience and passion. Plz keep em going!
everywhere. They are in the seat backs, the cieling, doors, interior cargo panels, everywhere you look there's a speaker.
Indeed, there is plenty of dirt to play in out there and lots of pretty rocks.
Excellent review. Thanks to RR, this is one of my favorite smoking tire reviews i've seen. nothing makes me want to buy this car more than what i saw in this vid.
really good review, keep em coming

Very professional & same time emotional review. BRAVO!
Thank you for that, Matt! Made me go to my dealer and now I'm about to purchase one.
It does. We're trying to set up a LX570 vs Range Rover test. Hopefully the manufacturers respond positively to our request.
Another really strong review there Matt, please keep up the great work!
I have to say that I really enjoy your videos Matt. JLR just keep pulling all the stops out, first this Range Rover and now the F Type. Well done! Great video as well, very informative.
haven't watched a non-one take video in a long time, these were freaking amazing.
This was a very nice review. One of your best videos IMO
there's a big difference beetween "beating it up" and using it for recreational off-roading, which it's totally capable of.
love my 2008 4.2 supercharged. can't wait to get one of these new ones.
some trucks can be luxurious in terms of their appointments, but no pickup truck will ever have the ride quality of a range rover. loved the old one, wasnt sure about the looks on the new one until i saw a one today.
Absolutley gorgeus looking car

I love the background music thank you so much for not adding buttrock to such a classy video.
Thank you for doing it for us Matt!
Another great review Matt. Its nice to see that you would buy one even after hating for so long! Truly means Range Rover did it right!
That's actually what the Range Rover say the extent of most people's off roading is: "A dirt road to their cottage somewhere." that exact prhasing too
It's the hockey puck one, the same one Jaguar has been using for like 6 years.
Reason you weren't invited to the previous Generation releases and now you're invited to latest one is you've made a name for yourself as an automotive journalist, You're doing great, Keep it up!. I like your objective views on every car, german, asian or domestic.

Looks Great, ONE OF THE Best 4X4 In the planet, but i still love Discovery.
One of the best reviews that I've seen.
Its immense what these machines can do, they defy gravity, physics and expectations and all the while not spilling your drink. Props
Yeah, the Amangiri resort is about 13 miles from Lake Powell
Very amazing car, A close friend of mine just bought a Range rover I think btn 03 to 06. He loves that thing, He rides in it like a King on the road with one of his hand out of the window. Beautiful Amazing car and Amazing review as well.
great video, helped me a lot in my decision!!!

I'm testing an Evoque in 2 weeks, and I will be taking it off-road.
I have a Land Rover myself, an LR4. We've taken it offroad several times and it is astonishing!
It may be $35k less than the Supercharged model I tested, but the base price of a new Lexus LX570 is $81,530, only $2,000 less than the base price of the new Range Rover. My tester was pretty loaded up.

It was an exaggeration. The system was amazingly clear. Playing a live AC/DC concert the sound is crystal even at full volume, which is crazy loud.
The Rover has a shorter wheelbase and an adjustable height suspension that actually has more ground clearance than the Raptor, so it's better for rock crawling. Great job again Matt! I love your reviews.
This is an exceptional review. Well done!
That screen is an option on all the range rovers.
Great review Matt, is it the Autobiography edition one that has that crazy front centre console that changes depending upon which seat you are looking at it from?
Matt I really enjoy your reviews both on the Drive network and the Smoking Tire! Keep up the great job and thank you!
Best range rover review . Thanks Mr.Matt
So ironic that you posted this, i just got financing for my first range rover today and searched a video for it and you didnt have one. Thanks TST
Great review Matt, just to add on the system, watts rarely mean much. Meridian is more of a cinema/audiophile company so i would expect it to sound great. As for your hearing, is it better now? Awesome video Matt, considering what you shot with that is an awesome clip.
Great car and a great review Matt if you would have to choose between your Raptor and the Range Rover, which one would you choose (and why) ?
While yes, I am turned off by what people with no taste do with their Range Rovers, I can finally accept that what people choose to do with them is not the fault of the car itself, which is an amazing vehicle from the factory.
matt you are one of my favorite auto journalists keep up the vids
And this is why I like these trucks. They do it all and have it all. Can't have much more then that.
I love my Raptor, but my next car will probably be one of these.
I mean, I can't guarantee anything, only share what we've personally experienced, and in our experience if you get one with the JLR engine as opposed to the earlier BMW motor you're better off. For that, we'd suggest a BMW X5 Diesel with all the luxury touches or an Audi S8

At 9:17, is that the Navajo Bridge in Arizona? I drove through there just a month ago (beautiful scenery all around the area) and it looks very similar to that bridge.
What do you mean? It looks fine to me.
Great video to post on my birthday
Great review brother ... One question ... What happens if you crash like will the car protect you ?
I dont know, I take my $50,000 "luxury" sport truck to the desert to thrash on all the time, sometimes for work, sometimes for fun. It's just that most people buy way more car than they need, whereas I buy exactly the amount of car that I need for a given job.

Yeah they are sold out for like a year. Fantastic music.
It looks like a wonderful truck and one of the best car reviews i have ever seen. But how long before it will leak oil?
The intro was cool.. Showed the real owners of Range Rover. I saw previous edition sport model in Manhattan parked on 5th Avenue all muddy and dirty.. And i said to myself now that's a proper Range Rover.

My damn dream car! Like he was saying, its an all-purpose vehicle. You can ride them off road while still having that luxurious look. IDK I WANT IT.
Except for the shared gear knob (which I think is eh, all right in the Range Rover), I'm SO glad that JLR hasn't just made them versions of each other; I'm glad the Jaguar XJ isn't just a saloon version of the Range Rover. I know some car companies make two identical cars that have different badges. Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan pop to mind. Anyway, it seems like even though they're one company they're totally separate, except MINOR details.
Finally!!!! A reviewer that knows what he's talking about...
Your videos are getting so good.
hey Matt taking money out wich one would you take: the Range Rover or your Raptor? or if you like de eco boost Raptar that you reviwed a while back... as always cool job men
I was chuckling at those pictures at the beginning loved it, might have to sub you
Awesome review Matt! One of your best videos in my opinion.
I would rather have a G-Glass than that.
