Matt Watson behind the screen! Always a benchmark for a thorough review since CarBuyer.
The P38 will always be my favourite
+Kieran White I agree. A 4.6 HSE in British green with cream Connolly leather interior is pure perfection.
Kieran White yes p38
me too, picking up an Overfinch soon.
@@E34Benzin I have a 1999 in literally that exact configuration :D
Really ? ...looks like an overgrown Talbot horizon
With all due respect to those who like the most recent version of the Range Rover, I find the first three generations to be the most attractive of the group.
same here, no wonder i like the G Wagon so much.
I got to ride in a Range Rover when I was in England a few weeks ago. :)
secret is first 3 were rugged and looked rugged, square, brash. L405 with all its curves looks very feminine, calling it an offroad car and plastering it with cheap plastic all around and underneath is a disgrace to the car. If you look closely, every video that shows all generations together - usually has the latest Range Rover L405 closest to the camera (to make it look like the car is just as tall as older gen), and with suspension fully raised - something you normally wouldn't drive with because it would be unbearably harsh ride - yet for older generations that was the regular ride height, so they made it low they made it curved, they made it feminine, i like it, but its not what it used to be, thumbs down TATA/Ford, thumbs down.
I agree. I got to ride in a Range Rover while I was visiting England. A cousin of my dad's has a Range Rover similar to the third Rover in the video.
Blimey! Amazing that you can still see the original cues in the latest model, a true design stroke of genius. The king of the road - nothing even gets close.....style, grace and super car power......it just doesn't get any better.
The days of unreliability were during the early Blair years (thanks to BMW)......since the Germans went off the scene - it just works. Having owned flagship cars from the top 3 German marques - I would rely on a RR any day over anything from BMW, Merc or Audi.
As the current owner of a 2019 4,4 diesel Autobiography and a 1993 Classic LSE (4,2), as well as having previously owned two L322s (2003, 2011) I can agree with all the positive sentiment except your comments on reliability, for which the charm of ownership somehow always seems to outweigh the pain. Your commentary on BMW’s ownership however is far from the mark - BMW spent billions and years to drag Land Rover into the 21st century but the fruits of its labour were enjoyed mostly by PAG (Ford) due to the need to sell this crown jewel to prevent themselves from being sunk by Rover.
So you reviewed some 4x4s without actually going off road? good one.
The Range Rover Vouge/HSE/Autobiography/Supercharged has to be the best looking automobile in history because every single model of every generation right from the 70s to the current 2020 are extremely beautiful!!
That classic range still hot
Range Rover classic will always be the best one... The most capable, the most adventurous, most chivalry and the most reliable... Range Rover Classic is the only, the pure!!
The new ones are quite low...
+Carlos Amaral Agreed. With each successive generation it became softer, more unreliable and overall deviated from the roots of the original model and Land Rover's roots in general.
The L405 is more reliable than the last iteration of the L322, the P38 had many issues that 06-09 didn't have. The reliability has gone up and down many times. But no20-30+ year old vehicle is going to be more reliable without first getting a full rebuild on everything.
3rd generation looked the best, the new one looks too much like a Ford Explorer.
its because the ford used to own it or supervise it
Ramandeep Saund It look like a Explorer simply because the designer was the same (Gerry McGovern). He created the Explorer design, so even getting inspiration from the Range Rover heritage, he still thinks "Explorer", because Explorer is his creation, not Range Rover.
The best one is the pre-facelift MkIII
The 3rd generation looks too pimpy
My dad got a 3rd gen v8 super charged thats gas converted so can get up to 40mpg
Why am I watching a Range Rover commercial, poorly disguised as a car review?
Gen 2 is my spirit animal :-)
The P38 is still the best model ever built, the later models are nothing more than a bag of endless technical problems, horrible electronics on board and that have only English in name.
P38 here in the states had many engine problems
Shane T all Range Rovers have problems it’s just the way they are
I have a P38. They have problems too. But they are fun usable classics now
I use my 2005 Westminster as my everyday driver. I love that truck. the newer models seem too small. when I think Range Rover I think massive and luxulry. not small and tight. one thing you can't beat is the all around air bag suspension. it's like driving a cloud.
Rico Capra they are actually bigger
I've owned an early classic, it was a surprisingly good ride quality. Very capable. Now all I need, is a new one. TDV8, please ;-)
well, quite the collection of reliability, low maintenance cost and great resale value
L322, the 3rd generation, is still so beautiful even today... everytime one passes by, you can't not starte at it in awe for its elegance and stance. The new one.... meh. Ford Explorer.
Beauty contest:
- 3rd generation
- 1st generation
- 4th generation
- 2nd generation
Biased
I agree 100 % 3rd has a better road presence and stance i prefer the boxeyer design
I love my RR 4.6HSE but my favorite is: (in order)
1 - Classic
2 - P38A
3 - L322
4 - L405
Surprisingly from older to newest...
Great video! Really do love all the Range Rovers.
damn i love the 2nd gen range rover
I like and respect all the Range Rovers...they have upheld their reputations for decades! 😀👍
Talking of the history of the Range Rover and the luxury of it you cannot use today's standards as a comparison for luxury. Take two cars I have for example a 1971 Land Rover it's a 4x4 it has leaf springs, drum brakes, no power steering, vinyl covered sponge seats, no carpets anywhere, no soundproofing, sliding Windows and so on the a Range Rover of similar age had carpets, a powerful, smooth and quiet v8, coil springs, disc brakes all around, wind down Windows, sound proofing. Compared to what else was offered in the 4x4 market it was luxury.
I also have a 1984 Range Rover classic, velour seats, carpets, nice 5 speed box, leather steering wheel, heated rear screen, central locking, halogen headlights, power steering, armrests everywhere, modern style windscreen wiper controls instead of just on or off.
And mine is only a mid range model, the Range Rover classic is as comfortable and effortless to drive as a modern vw golf. So yea it is luxurious
MrSpookylukey Who is going to read that !!!? This soo long
Alex everything Alex You did!! 😂
Sadly it's more a Promo Video than a comparison :-(
I wouldn't buy anything over a 2002 my mother owned a 2001 still love it. but once the electric system goes out you can forget it. I will forever love the first and second generation
CrowLife Cynn agree
Would have loved to se some more direct comparisons where every generation crossed the same obstacles - never the less the review was fine. Thanks ;)
CLASSIC Blows the rest out the water
That along with Jaguars/Audis/VWs too. Though, fantastic cars so long as they're covered under warantee!
1st gen to 2nd gen was the biggest change now they are just perfecting it
That classic has about 5 million less dents than mine, but mine is an off roader and is lifted by 6.5 inches so it's unstoppable unless you hit a river bank the hurt quite a lot
Do all 4 come standard with the EML light on from factory…?
Longer videos please!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are great but too short
90% of Range Rover drivers never off-road in it ! so it packed with loads of 4 wheel drive systems and tech modes to manage a driving condition only 10% of the drivers will face ! now that's what i call an honorable company that still focus on the fundamentals that made it famous in the first place, they never diverse the aim of Range Rover.
This and the Toyota LC 100/200 my favorites luxury all terrain vehicles.
Can you do the comparison of the new Range Rover with the ML 500?
Wow now the range rover can do even more things you'll never use it for!
My favourite Range Rovers are the Mk. I and the Mk. II.
I've been in all of them apart from the Mk4 off-road. Now don't get me wrong the MK1 is very good, I had an old two door and it remains one of my most favorite cars of all time. But the MK3 is seriously impressive and has less rear over hang, large tires and better traction systems than MK1. This latest model should be even better, the new intake system giving 1m wading capability is awesome.
It's 2017 and the third gen is better than most cars I a luxurious way, I'm looking to buy a second hand because I really want one!!
Lelantos
ya crazy they are terrible cars dont you guys read? that its the most unreliable poorly built car with tsrrible electronics and harsh rdie quality. go drive rx450h or even old rx400h for 7 grand its still better then any Range.
BobbyDeniroX I know that they are very unreliable but all of the other quality features in them are still better than a lot of cars now, they were truly advanced for their time. And what's wrong with the ride quality?
Bobby-No need to troll with rude childish comments
Still like the third generation's looks better than the new one, but the newest generation is definitely an improvement in every other way!
Pls where can I get 92 model?
After watching so much of carwow I can already tell the voice is Mat’s🤣
CLASSIC ! ALL DAY LONG
James Lindley agree 👍
Isn't the voiceover from the guy of Carwow?
Best SUV ever
The newer they get the more road bias they get prefer the original looks like a proper 4x4 best looks of any of them and best of on and off road
Why?, Do you really think that the ML500 is in the same league of Range Rover?
C'mon guys, make a challenge of first Rangie and latest one, who's better off-roader! But seriously hard obstacles and let's see how new RR can cope with 900 mm's :) Please!
CLASSIC ONLY
It's ironic and many may disagree with me, but I think the p38 is the most "Range Rovery" looking.
With every model they have became more unreliable! Reliability sells vehicles! I think they need to stop worrying so much about luxury and worry about not breaking down.
Ur doing this about reading on the internet and listening to rr haters but u need experience also need to service properly do u even know research that people do aren't always right
This car improve every aspect of the previous models, exterior and definitely interior. Comments saying it looks ugly are harsh, when I'd bet no ones seen one in the flesh yet. How many vehicles in the world are just as good as if not better than, BMW, Mercedes and Bentleys, yet have twice the capacities? Y'all know nothing! I'll take 2 when OVERFINCH steps in on it... I wish!!!
Matt Watson is just the best car reviewer in the world :D It's proven in this vid, as he is the one talking :D
range rover has become an attainable bentley type of car.
These days only bell ends buy Range Rovers which is sad. Even Bentley has sold its soul to feed the egos of people with more money than taste, who just want to elevate themselves and their egos. Give me an old and honest Range Rover Classic 4.2 V8 LSE any day however, and I can guarantee it will never be seen without mud on it...
*_Top comment, Bell endz... love it_*
I see a lot of RANGE ROVERS in my job. As I drive recovery trucks.
Lol that's true break down all the time
It’s the L322 for me in black, green or white.
Best SUV so far !
all the car you will ever need
RANGE-ROVER - super SUV 👌👍
im suprise thath all this range rovers are still running
I grew up going camping and 4wding in a 2 door 1977 Range Rover. We once drove through a very deep river. The water level got up to the bonnett, and then the car started floating up while the wheels drooped down. We had just enough traction to get through to the other side. We werent going fast, just crawling towards the end. The engine never missed a beat. The water must have been around 1.2 to 1.3m deep. Try that in a new one.
Unlike a new Range Rover, our's had a great approach angle, easily accessible recovery points, no flimsy plastic that would get ripped, it had strong plastic rails under the doors to protect the sills, more articulation, high profile off road ready tyres, and any faults (which were rare) could be fixed in the field.
Off road, the new Range Rover, despite some good aspects, is a joke, that no-one takes seriously. You just wouldnt take one off road. It wont make it easily or undamaged.
It's obvious with a $$$$ paint spec owners of moden RRs are loathe to tread off the beaten path; but you're kidding yourself to think the 70's model was more capable.
+George Mangos The current model is obviously great in many ways but it is no longer suitable for off roading. Low profile tyres are the main killer. In Australia we have heaps of proper offroading, and you just wouldnt use one for it.
hey Choc! Don't disagree with you there - though a seriously minded offroader would have a second set of wheels. I've got a 2011 4.4 diesel Autobiography - I must admit I wouldn't dream to take it where it would get scratched up.
+George Mangos The next step for Range Rover is to fit smaller diameter brakes that are just as good, maybe they need to be carbon fibre or have larger vents and more pots in the calipers. Or, they need to fit or allow the fitment of larger overall diameter tyres.
The Rangie Classic as an example was ready for offroading straight off the showroom floor, yet the current models cant even be modified to be suitable for offroading.
It is long overdue for Land Rover to create a competitor in the dual cab ute market, something like an Amarok but even more suitable for offroading.
First gen will always look the best
Is this voice yours Mat Watson from Carwow?
So were 99% of Audis manufactured from 1990-2006. Most VWs in this era weren't much better.
However, they all have subsequently improved on reliability as of late. I haven't seen Land Rovers strangled on the streets whereas dead GM and Chrysler products still mark the streets in Canadian winters. There are a fair share of RR and RRS on streets now more than ever too.
Trouble is ! it'll Oxidise to dust in 15 year but there again it'll be out of its economic use before then coz its way too Gizmonic, it'll spend more time at the dealer than working
Range rover classic was the best
3rd gen is a 2010 and up, not 02, could've added the 03-05 body- then 06-09 body, then the 10-12. I have a 2012 supercharged autobiography, love it the best of all them, still has the Range Rover appeal and body shape, as does the benz g wagon. The newer range reminds me of explorers!!
3rd Generation is 2002-2012 Get you head out of the Gutter.First is from 78 second is upto 2002 third is the newer one from 2013
i like this model how i can got it am tanzanian
i love the range rover
I know that voice! is MATT WATSON the Legend!
Been a long time since that was true.
P38 is what's needed to day forget all of these computerized vehicles of today -
i wonder in 30 years time if anybody is gonna buy the current new range rover to be trashed in the wild. heck if it is even capable of doing so. the electronics will prolly kill it.
These are all great cars, but I don't know, there's something about beating the shit out of myself in my Series lll. Lol!
im surprised the 3erd gen is still running.
Why do they suck
Excelentes 4x4
Mat's voice ?
old video I know. But a shame they didn't take all of the RR's off road together on the Experience Course. But my word, what a lot of misinformation there is in this article too. So much information on the past models is completely wrong.
The New Rang is tottaly a fail
Suffix A Range Rover is my go-to vehicle. The modern Range Rovers, while VERY nice indeed, have gotten too soft for my liking.
cause it is!
The range rover p38 a and p38 b from english and france
L322 will always be the best.
Classic will piss all over every incarnation since !! leave em for dead !!!
In 1977, with a Range Rover I crossed Sahara too easily, a Land cruiser struggled but crossed with us. But sorry to say pajero, and others simply failed. Today range Rover is too complicated, too much electronic dependent and costs a moon. But what that led to? A guy spending a small fortune on Range Rover will never put a bet on it by driving/offroading in Sahara. So, what for those extras fitted to help offroading when Range Rover will simply run on Autobahns and city roads?
This is just a range rover commercial in disguise.
Don't be silly the Range Rover is in a class of its own compared to any other SUV the ML 500 has no chance.
1 question: reliability?
i7rs it whill brake every day
Sucks
The L322 is the best of all.
This Range Rover do not Look exactly the same as an Explore. However there are some similar shapes but not many at all.
The new one looks like Ford explorer, especially the headlights!!!!!!!
I owned mark 1 2 and 3 the Range Rover Classic is the best off road machine! better articulation a more usable 4x4 system with manual gearbox also its much lighter and more nimble off road also! simple mechanics coil springs lack of computers & gadgets that are a constant problem on newer models, one things for sure if i had to get somewhere over rough terrain and my life depended on it it would be the classic! they should stop building these pretenders & put the classic back into production :)
The new model looks like a ford explorer
Landcruiser
RR 3edition 2002 a you ...! Why in video RR 2008year! Dis!!!
I'll take the first gen. ....you can keep the others ;-)
*improves *capabilities
MK3 is probably the best
Used to be*
The new Range Rover looks like a boxy Q7
the quote that the modern range rover is just as capable as the original range rover is BS. the current model has big plastic bumpers wich break when the terrain gets tough, the big wheels are terrible off road. and electronic traction control isnt as smooth as the old system (called "articulation"). and i felt the air suspension just isnt as comfortable as the good old coil-overs (and why does nobody ever mention that!?). altough i do like the 2013's high air intake and the better interior.
i agree with everything exept the tires. bigger and wider tires are much better off road. Check out the icelandic off roaders
and you can fix mine on the side of the road! it's a body off job to simply change an exhaust manifold on the 3rd gen and god knows what on the 4th
+Patrick V.D. Valk I completely agree with you... There is no sense in using 20' or 21' wheels on an off road car!
