Cdrama is having the same problem as Hollywood: no new ideas, keep remaking the old stuff, and no appetite for taking risk and trying something new… *sigh*
I think Hollywood is better though as there’s way less censorship and more diversity in actors and stories compared to Cdramas. I think KDrama had this problem a few years ago but Kdramaland has improved a lot in these few years especially after Parasite.

What i know of hollywood is there are many remakes or expanded universe of existing movies and series. But in the case of Cdrama, they follow similar plots, characters, and settings again and again. They don't remake old dramas (CMIIW, I mean there's a few like Condor Heroes etc. but i don't think they're that many). There is a censorship too, so they are kinda restricted.
Cdrama will be just fine just like all the other drama lands. I got into cdrama not long ago and I am finding many good shows.
Yep, totally agree. I just read a very interesting article in Harper's called Life and Death of Hollywood about how the status of writers changed over time, and how the entering of hedge funds and finance into film studios pretty much destroyed the industry. It's not looking good and promising. And there might not be obvious censorship like it exists in China, but it does exist in other forms. Not taking risks is a form of self-censorship, being politically correct to cater to the widest audience is a form of self-censorship. And let's be honest, the same way Hollywood is US propaganda machine, it is also filled with censorship, just not out in the open.
If Wang Yuwen and Wang Ziqi play a couple in, like, a million dramas, I'd watch it. They have such great chemistry.
Joy of life season 2 is more on mind games while S1 includes some martial arts in between. I understand if casual viewers cannot follow bec. it does demand cognitive effort, attention and alertness esp. in the dialogues in order to understand and not to miss out on the pieces of clues, symbolisms used and most importantly some critical aspects of the story. Joy of life on the side reflects a lot about life whether in modern or ancient setting particularly in business dealings or in political affairs. For example, people can talk calmly and friendly when facing each other but behind there is scheming, cursing, backstabbing and betrayal. This kind of drama with so many excellent actors in one is rare. Among the notable characters to me was Fan Sizhe. Since S1, he is living his character in the drama like he's so natural and not even acting. The emperor was playing his role conscientiously as well. In S1, there was a scene where the emperor confronted the minister for how he conducted the assault case of Gou Baokun. In that confrontation, the emperor really looked like that dominant, powerful and scary figure. The minister was also an excellent actor as you can sense his fear and loss of sense of rationality due to intimidation. Chengze can be really seriously funny and hateful at the same time. Fan Xian gives off that rouge, countryside folk character not bec. he is that but bec. he is acting so well. He can be funny, serious, smart, naive, strong, powerful, vulnerable and so much more. Chen Pingping's face alone is acting effortlessly. There are many more to mention esp. the veteran or elder supporting actors in the drama. It is amazing how these actors deliver the emotions, tones of speech, the brilliance of the characters and timing of humor flawlessly with no signs of awkwardness. The script itself was made by a genius. It keeps your sense of analogy awake, touches deep emotions and thoughts and the story is gripping in every episode.

Scenario is pure catastrophe. Acting as well. It's impossible to pull out such a scenario even when you Gong Jun and Yang Mi.
"The Double" Youku drama is going to be a hit. With just 1ep you will know how good the drama will be

Fox spirit has poor scenario no talent can cover it. Yang Mi like ice cube -blank face at ever single point even CGI fire can't set her alive. Dialogues so idiotic, so poor there no base for the actor to start from. Huge disappointment.
Fox spirit matchmaker is pain, complete scenario desaster (( its just bad and poor at everything. So sad, so sad , ao disappointing. I mean even Gong Jun and Yang Mi couldn't make it work so badly it's written. Just feel sorry for them to get involved in auch poor production.
Happy Birthday to me. Nice to hear a new drama, General Well, has gone live as I need another one to watch between the release of Joy of Life 2 episodes. I beg to differ with Avenue X about the quality of JOL2. It's well-acted, most beloved characters are back playing out their conflicted storylines. After many years of doing this, she brings great knowledge to her interpretations of the many dramas she reviews, but maybe after all this time the repetitive nature of the plots gets in the way of some fair evaluation at times.
Gen. Well is on? JOL2 is entertaining. I’m glad they made it. I don’t like the AI subs so I’m waiting for the next day as hard as it is..however #1 they caught lightning in a bottle. Not realistic to think it’s gonna be as good
I agree, JOL2 has been entertaining thus far. It seems like Avenue X went into this drama already disappointed and looking to tear it down.

What's with AI subtitles in JOL 2 on Tencent? I am actually outraged and for the first time I wrote to complain. I pay for VIP, and feel disgusted. The subtitles don't make any sense. It is impossible to follow the plot, especially when there is a subtle intrigue. I found MZTV, and so far, that site is one day behind, they have decent subtitles that respect the different culturally based sentence structure. I also disagree with AveX on the plot and costumes. Although S2 script is not as powerful as S1, it find entertaining, and look forward to the upcoming episodes. Yesterday's rant on the live show about S2 was pretty harsh. Sorry! My opinion. Thank you for your videos and the work you put into each.

Second season of Insect Detective slapped. I wholly recommend it. You don't really need the first season to enjoy the second season. Most of the show takes place in Thailand, which is a fun change of pace.
The only thing I like about Fox Spirit is Gong Jun. The plot is inexistent and the ott special effects is annoying.I endured until the 7 episode , couldn’ t stay any longer…

Am only up to ep 2 of Fox Spirit, and so far, unfortunately, must agree. Yang Mi character very flat. Just because of 2 main leads will continue (a bit longer).
After watching half the episodes, I will comment about Fox Spirit Match Maker 1. So far, the excessive CGI and acting of the main leads have given me a headache.
I am waiting for The Tale Of The Rose, with those eye candies. 😍.
I agree with Wang Yuwen and Wang QiZi. The Love You Give Me is the most rewatched contemporary cdrama for me ( >10x; I guess I was crazy).

OK I started watching Fox Spirit Match Maker hoping against hope that you were being overly critical and maybe I'd like it... I'm afraid as usual you are spot on. So far My favorite part of the drama was seeing Gong Jun topless - yeah that was nice... however not enough. And the music sucks. As a musician, I notice this instantly. Many people don't realize how much the background music affects the whole mood of the drama. The background score to LBFD was great and I believe a large part of its success, but this one... so hokey, trite and just plain OFF. How long can Gong Jun's pretty face keep me watching? *shrug*
It doesn't help so many of these dramas are filmed at least a year or two ago so they seem dated when they actually air.
Fox Spirit Match Maker, I watched ep 1-4. I was having a hard time trying to get through all 4 episodes. It was really boring. There seemed to be no plot.. ?🤷♀️ Also, people will come after me for saying this, but, I think Yang Mi and Gong Jun do not match. Yang Mi looks a bit older than Gong Jun. They look like a pair of mother and son. 😅

So full of life today, a free and easy look(very attractive), and your usual sarcastic comments about dramaland! Yes, you haven't aged noticeably in 7 years.(much better makeup helps). I admire how you keep plowing ahead each week despite having disgust for the industry you cover. If only you could devote your abundant energy and brainpower to some really decent material, wonderful things could happen. I wish I could be more optimistic about cdramaland, but the ultimate customers seem to be getting dumber and dumber, and the government seems to be getting increasingly prohibitive, so that the future doesn't look very promising! Maybe your role as the gadfly who keeps saying that this is a bunch of crap, is providing a real service. Somebody has to standup and say "The emperor has no clothes on"!

I have been watching your reviews for awhile, and I've always thought you must not like ChengYi for you never give credit for his hard work in his fighting scenes especially in Lotus. But after today's post, it is very obvious when you purposely left out his photo when talking about the two leading pairs of the subsequent Fox Spirits.

"Dashing Youth" is scheduled to air in July, if memory serves. Because I'm interested in the story, I will likely stick with it until the end, even though I'm still feeling annoyed with Ho Ming Hao fans from "I am Nobody" spamming live comments, which will be worse for sure, and cdramas are generally too much of a crapshoot. There is a good chance that this will be the 2nd and final cdrama I finish watching in 2024. Not too bad when compared to the years when I didn't finish any cdrama.
It's both interesting and odd that cdrama industry can 1. "adapt from" (or butcher) fairly diverse stories/sources into fairly similar, predictable dramas and 2. "recycle and reuse" but not "reduce". Vast majority of idol cdramas seem no different from fan-service.
Watching 2 episodes of fox match maker, yup I will not continue it, the lead couple have no chemistry, yup just a lot of pretty people just doing their things, the green screen is so obvious and so "rough", the BGM just so suddenly appear and feel so disconnected with the scene and the story and in episode 1 the BGM is louder than the dialogs its such a turn of, the FL acting emotionless to the point like a lifeless person and have no will to life, it just her mouth that keep moving but her eyes have no emotion, at least Gong jun and GXT are lifely characters. The filters oh my god so over the top, Gong Jun become so white it looks like too much powder put on his face, the light is so bright, the script I dont want to talk about it. It is such a waste with so many stars as casts. I hope the other 2 series to come will not disappoint me.
I could not pass episode 1 of Fox Spirit Match Maker. I am so done with the Xianxia genre. I watched about 30 episodes of JOL Season 1. I don't think that I am going to finish it because I found it so boring. I will not bother to check out JOL Season 2. 2024 has been a terrible year so far for CDrama, nothing outstanding. I hope the second half of this year will be better.
So far I only like 4 dramas this year that I rated 8 and 9 are: Angels Fall Sometime (good tears jerker), War of Faith (good acting), Born to Run and Will Love in Spring (decent scripts and good acting) about life adversities and triumphant.

I found Fox Spirit very disappointing. The music feels out of context and too modern. The acting just isn't. They stand there. They say lines. We cut to another scene. The fight scenes are so poor. It's obvious that the actors don't do any of the actual moves and are just left to take up a pose at the end. That's when there is any kind of fight scene. They mostly rely on fast cutting and hanging the actors on strings, while the CGI team take over.

It's true, with so many dramas releasing in the world, it's very difficult to maintain originality. The dramas can only compete in production quality and acting performances. Suddenly we find that some of the drama stars are actually terrible actors. I'm waiting for a fresh breeze.

In fox drama im up to 10 but they messed up very bady with first Story of matchmaking, they just show them as cut part which is not good.
They deserve more screen time . They should have given them 2-3 episodes completely based on them rather than wasting 6-7 ep. With only 30 min. Screen time 😭.

Fox drama is a failed drama, no storyline, pairing is only for strong promotion without any chemistry. I've watched until ep 10 but I just don't understand the storyline. It is not captivating at all. Yes Yang mi is pretty but I don't get a vibe in this drama. She sounds like reading a book the whole time. I think if they replace dilraba as a tushan honghong I guess the whole drama will be of a different vibe. I think after getting so much negative reviews they have cut down episodes from 40 to 36. When you don't have storyline but just plot after plot it is pointless to lengthen the drama.
202_ had been such a let down for me in terms of c dramas i think mostly because iam more on the modern dramas side either way this year has been really disappointing the drama i literally almost gave a perfect 10 which is tender light busted up in the finale leaving me with major disappointment still tender light was one of the mkst well written dramas this year if only they didn't change the novel ending

It's all because the production companies care about risk avoidance, right? So in Hollywood, except for small indies, the same movies get made over and over again because the percentage of middle-budget movies has declined drastically. So you have these huge blockbusters that are major financial investments, and the investors don't want to lose money, so don't want to take risks. So just do what worked before. And then in China, you also add censorship, which has steadily been getting stricter, into the mix - that makes people even MORE risk-averse.
Also, I just wanted to say that if you really don't like running your channel anymore, you don't HAVE to do it! You can always change course and do something else that satisfies you more! Or you can even take a break and come back later when you're feeling less ground down.

I think it's ok for a fairytale (or xianxia for that matter). The characters must look ethereal and unearthly after all, right? As to that young actor's sad situation... well, the fans once again have gone too far, imo. How many times should one be punished for the same misdeed? Peace, guys! Be kinder. 🙏
Im ok withe ethereal thing, but in most xianxia (and MANY kdramas too), people dont even have face angles, you can only see their nostrils and eyes its getting ridiculous!

I watched the donghua and manhua versions Fox Spirit. It was my pastime when I was a teenager. I was very excited to see the drama version. I watched six episodes. Damn, the plot is boring and has changed so much ! I was confused and lost ! 😱
The spirits are too blinded me. On the other hand, I am disgusted that Tushan Yaya has become a fangirl 🤨 In the original version, Yaya is a badass and she doesn't have a romantic relationship ! Why on earth did the script change her personnality ? 😵💫
The protagonists have no chemistry, why do they look like a stepmother and a son ? My god, it has become a story for children ! 😂 Honestly, I am very disappointed... 😢

I dont mind recycling plots for shows, bcoz some people really like those plots, and would still enjoy watching different tv shows of similar plots..m

She did in her May livestream. Not positive lol Basically she said there is zero chemistry between the 2 leads. And knowing Tong Yao I'm not surprised. (But I haven't watched this drama specifically so can't judge)
@@andaro45 that's unfortunate. i know she mentioned zxc seems to not have chemistry for most of his leads in a past video as well. i think you should give it a shot for the "thriller" part. the cop role by the sml was also really memorable
I think the problem with xinxia is that we are mortals, we are all humans. So we don't exactly know about gods, devils, immortals and we want to see something 'human' in those characters but we always get those expressionless, emotionless woody characters. I think, atleast for me, that's why I don't like that genre

1. "Fox Spirit" - при всем моем уважении даже Гун Цзюнь не спасает ситуацию. Вообще не понимаю почему он согласился на этот проект?🤔
2. "General Well" - иногда низкобюджетные драмы гораздо лучше и интереснее.
С Wang You Shuo могу смотреть что угодно, хоть рекламу трусов🤭
3. "Joy of life2" - не смотрю, не хочу разочаровываться после стольких лет ожидания.
4. "The Tale of Rose" - буду смотреть только потому что в драме играют такие корифеи как Walles Huo и Lin Geng Xin.
5. "Mo Yu Yun Jian" - с нетерпением жду выхода драмы.
6. Драму с Liu Xuei и Meng Zi Yi тоже очень жду. Если я правильно понимаю то драма выйдет не раньше 2025 года.
Мне нравится актерская игра Лю Сюэи. Он органичен и пластичен в своих ролях. Его игре веришь. И не важно второстепенная это роль или главная или вообще третий стул в десятом ряду. Драма "In Blossom" вошла в мой топ-лист.
7. "Fu shan hai" - думаю должно получится не хуже чем в драме "Lian hua lou". К актеру Чен И я отношусь с уважением.
Какие же люди злопамятные!🤬 Мне искренне жаль Huang Jun Jie. Но черт возьми! Никто уже не помнит что там было, где истина, а продолжают его хейтить.
Надеюсь у него хватит моральных и физических сил это преодолеть, и очистить свое имя.
8. Когда говорят "Тенсент планирует" - становится смешно, шутка на миллион 😅👍😂 С Тенсент вообще нельзя ни в чем быть уверенным. Они скажут "а давайте завтра выпустим драму?" только в каком году или столетии это "завтра" будет?🤔
И ещё добавлю: китайская индустрия развлечений гоняясь за прибылью теряет многих талантливых людей.
Fox Spirit is pretty boring. I just pushed through to see if it'd get any better. Joy of Life 2 is the same. Did they try to make it comedy? So many people were praising how great it is and it's better than season 1. So I tuned in and couldn't really get through it.
