I’ve noticed lately Chinese dramas have the same theme which to me is tiring..revenge, rich CEO/assistant falling in love, good fairy/evil falling in love, parents interfering in their 30 yr old adult children’s lives forcing them to marry against their will…now another mermaid drama 😳
It is like this the whole time, we just normally will have a few very amazing dramas that overshadow them so we dont notice as much. This year there is just none and we stuck with the cheap cliche one.
@@jiaqilin1939 you are so right ( ´△`)
I think some of that is because of censorship. They can’t really do edgy, there’s so many hoops to jump through, they can’t show graphic stuff, too much sexual stuff, villains have to be a certain way and stories have a certain ending. Nothing can paint China in a negative light. It’s hard to be creative with all those restrictions. You can try to branch out but then take the risk of spending millions and have the censors shelve your project. I don’t blame them for playing it safe.
I have ideas for some dramas that would be different and, I hope, enjoyable, but I don't know how to get them to anyone who could make them.
also time traveling
Me personally i loved the whole show of the double, this was a real revenge story from a female lead and the chemistry between wu jinyan and Wang xingyue had me screaming. The scene in the rain from episode 17 will stay in my mind forever and cemented this drama as one of my new favourites. I was waking up every morning at 6 to watch the new episodes like a crazy woman. I dont care if this drama isnt considered perfect or its 'rushed' at the end. It truly showed what its like for a couple to support each other in their schemes. and with the little extra episode with their daughter and happy married life of 8 years, it ended perfectly to me.
Same.. I also dont mind the ending and I give The Double a 8.9/10 or a 9/10
One daughter after 8 years of loving marriage? Is it the hidden advertisement for ancient Chinese contraceptives?
Same ...I am satisfied with ending
Same to same situation happened with me like you described I loved this drama😅❤
Same I'm satisfied with how everything turned out...The rain scene...the flower scene they will live forever rent free in my heart...and for those who wants to blindly criticize everything...man we are watching a drama...not a documentary...Not everything has to be scientific and perfectly logical scene by scene...TD is a well made Historical drama that really created a long lasting impression on its audience...No drama is perfect... that's why they are called drama...BTW Xue Xiao couple chemistry is its biggest asset which will prevent the audience to move on any sooner 😅😊
I may not agree with every one of your opinions, but I do LOVE your videos, even the negative ones lol! Your brutally honest opinions are so refreshing, and I always learn so much about the chinese drama industry when you add your perspectives and your knowledge.
I agree with you. Im a fan of Luo Yunxi and last night i was telling my mom that he looks thinner than the female lead. Im actually worried for him. Hope he is eating well and is staying healthy.
I loved him in Love is Sweet and Till the End of the Moon, but I agree with you. He looks ill. I hope he's not anorexic. He was so muscular when he was a dancer. II hope he can gain some weight.
I love The Double. It is enjoyable to watch. Towards the end it was slightly rushed but i savour each episodes. One of the best drama i watch this years so far. I give 9/10 for the drama ❤
You absolutely right darling
Agreed 👍🏻💯
Thank you! I'll keep watching!
I highly recommend to watch The Double, really worthied
I highly recommend to watch The Double, really worthied
The double is so good. I've seen a lot of storyline with the fl coming back as a twin or new person, but the story is sp good. The whole evil princess and annoying ex-husband was so good!!! I really like that the back stories behind the characters are so detailed and complex. Also, Duke Su and Ali's chemistry are so good!!
I am more prefer the novel, is more satisfying for scheme plot and characters. But the plus point for me for drama, unexpectedly is the princess character. Her character in drama is more scary, psycopatic, unpredictable, arrogance n more evil than in novel. That make her character more intense n more hateful. The actress really doing great job to portrayed the lunatic n psychopathic princess.
@@miyuryuu7260where can I read the novel?
@@bubbletea188 just google it, u can found so many sources for free novel translation. The novel title "marriage of the Di daughter"
Note : FL is not take Jiang Li identity like in drama, but she already died killed by princess. But she gave the second chance to come back alive through Jiang li's dead body (her soul entered Jiang li's body n become her)
I like the Tale of Rose. It shows a life that allows the audience to see the choices and results of the female protagonist’s choice. You can relate to certain choices and regret and emotions that she makes. Regardless - I haven’t read the novel but I like how the drama came about
Feel like AvenuX didnt really watch the drama, she only talk ab the novel and not much ab the story or the characters of the drama, it was very messy review very disappointed with it.
I enjoyed the Tale of Rose, too. I see her from being young and letting her emotion out of control to her freeing herself from a control freak husband in a very mature way. The life of Rose is about controlling her own life, how own choices, being free, demanding to be respected by her life partners, especially her first love.
@@fatisummer9106well it's an adaptation, it's hard not to talk abt/compare it to the original
I thought The tale of Rose was quite different, the actress did a great job. So different from the cute female characters. She is her own woman and made choices she wanted.
I thoroughly enjoyed this 3rd Liu Yi Fei drama. I think that LYF brings a more daring, realistic and a more worldly acting compared to her same-level female peers in Chinese dramaland. Her outfits and gowns seemed haute couture and a bit over the top for the story. Nevertheless, they were all eye pleasing and worn so well by beautiful LYF.
I loved Blossoms in Adversity. Communication between fl and ml was awesome and so refreshing. It's the only one that has capture my attention this year
Agree,, i kinda like it the plot. But there is something a miss in the middle of the story (when FL entered astronomy palace) and how the problem solved just simply ended by the king's death. It felt like a lazy ending after they gave us complicated n intense problems 😅
Me too! I thought every ep was enjoyable. Never a dull moment. Great characters, attractive leads and second leads. The actor playing Shen Huan was handsome and so likeable. I hope to see more of him.
Agree, I really liked their romance, and his story, and she was so smart.
I also do
@@miyuryuu7260 Yeah! I totally agree with you. That part was weird 😅
I think Song Yi and Liu Yifei has an exact same vibe, they have this princess/noble lady vibe that being wild/overly comedic felt out of place for them, but they really good actors so any kind of role they do still redeemable imo. Also, Thank you for saying it out loud.. Some people (most probably his fans) would come after anyone who say Luo Yunxi's too skinny by saying it's body shaming, but no, he's seriously too skinny and for me it took away his charisma as main lead. Maybe he'll look better in fantasy set-up drama like that one he did with Bai Lu..but well as long as he's healthy right.
Anyway thanks as always avenuex! Have a good day
He is too skinny, but going back and looking at his older stuff when he had more meat on him I understand why he keeps himself so skinny. He looks ethereal, while in the past, especially since he was also more tanned than he is now, he looked like a mexican cartel member. He had his appeal then too, but now his looks are more on trend with what is expected from celebrities. Healthy? Definitely not. And since he is doing a lot of his own action scenes, honestly I don't know how he can manage them.
Aqui no Brasil e talvez no México é considerado saudável. Na China é cultural que a pele excessivamente branca chame mais atenção.
When an actor or actress becomes so thin they look as though they have a fatal disease/illness it is alarming and hard to have confidence in the characters they play unless the characters are critically ill. I hope it doesn't become a trend for them to be painfully thin because I don't find it attractive at all but just concerning.
@Sammy-fmhkywhat is wrong with you? Why did you take everything I said and turn it into a negative thing? Have you missed me saying he had his appeal? Or maybe when I said that he keeps his looks in the trends nowadays - trends that I didn't set up but the Chinese society did? Also, I said he looks like a mexican cartel member because of the swag that he displayed. Personally, I liked him then and I also like him now, even though I consider him to be too skinny for his own good. But he knows best since it's his body and his career, I'll just keep on enjoying his work.
@@rosa092I made that comparison because of the stereotypical portrayal in movies of cartel members. Tanned and with his cheeky smile he did look like one of the bad guys that steals the hearts of good girls (as portrayed in certain movies). Also, in my country we also consider being tanned as being healthy and beautiful. Usually we sunbathe for 5-6 months of the year and we chase the sun even in winter.
luo yunxi is indeed too skinny that it looks weird in this set up. and yeah.. that eyeshadow lol his look fits more in xianxia dramas as an immortal
I think a main reason we are sticking with your channel is because you have been the only voice on the Chinese side of dramaland on RUclips for a while. We are starting to get English-speaking drama fans making videos, but they still rely on English subtitles or machine/amateur translation. Similarly, a lot of voices on tumblr are diaspora with a non-native grasp on the language, or, again, westerners without your background. We appreciate you providing a native perspective in English. Whether you're praising a show, complaining about it, or voicing an opinion I disagree with, I will still be here :)
Marcus here also provides updates & info on Chinese dramas - he can understand Mandarin
True ; it helps that Avenue X is a mainlander who used to be in the entertainment industry in China. I appreciate her take on film-making & all the background swoop on the dramas & their historical significance. Many a time, I have scrambled to read up events & places of that time period in Chinese history. So yes, I look forward to listening to her take on a drama. She is usually spot-on :)
I'm very frustrated as well. I enjoy your complaints, as I feel the same
The dumpling analogy is perfect for The Double. I binged it while I was sick with flu and it filled me up for a bit, but now I refuse to pay extra for the final few episodes. I will likely have gone in search of something more satisfying by the time they make the last episodes available and never get round to finishing it...
You wouldn't be missing anything much. More nonsensical plot and not so many nice scenes. In the last episode the FL spent more time with her ex-husband than with the ML...
The last 4 episodes on dramacool for free
I watch all cdramas on dramacool for free the day they air 😅 if that helps. But I will say I have great adblockers if you end up using the site and captions on older dramas are sometimes questionable.

Thank you so much @AvenueX, for still giving us weekly videos. I honestly love your reviews and comments and I really appreciate you and your time to watch these videos to make these reviews. I personally have started becoming bored of Chinese dramas for a while now too. I used to complain a few years back about why there wasn't a lot of ancient Chinese or costume dramas and would binged watch any costume Chinese dramas I came across, but now I see them everywhere, and it's really about quantity rather than quality of the film work. Even the costumes themselves are not as vibrant and beautiful as they used to be and the plot is just.... Nonetheless, I shared many of your opinions and just wanted to let you know I can relate and you're doing a wonderful job and is an awesome person.
I really liked The Tale of Rose. I actually thought progressive ideas were subtly introduced without pushing them down our throats - views on family, feminism, women's choices on their career, marriage, divorce, coparenting, death, relationships, societal views on r*pe, death etc. I think it was forward looking in the era it happened in china and progresses along the timeline and growth of HYM and the charscters. I am not Chinese so maybe I have a different take of HYM's growth against the backdrop of a chinese society that's getting more confident and progressive. Liu Yifei I think was incredible. She has this micro emotions that i dont think others can do. the rest of the cast were superb too. everyone is at pace with everyone in acting skills. the conversations have so much wisdom it feels like reading a novel and i think it's the reason it may not be everyone's cup of tea. most of all, i like how HYM doesn't go down the victim-of-life-choices path. it also doesn't romanticize the idea of a strong woman who does it all. it could have easily gone down those routes if it were other dramas. i like that it gives us space to think what could have been a better choice if it were us but takes us back to the realization that Rose, just like us, is a flawed character who doesnt necessarily make the best choices. the drama doesn't stress whether her choices are not the best or the contrary. it just gives you the feeling that it is what it is and she moves on, maybe looking at the rearview mirror to the past but carrying on forward with grace.
On The Double, i completed it because I know what exactly to expect from Wu Jinyan in this kind of genre. I do think she is effective playing this kind of role and I kinda think it's her trademark now. i watched this thinkinh it is the continuation of Yanxi Palace, Hao Lan and Royal Feast. There won't be as much disappointment if you think of The Double this way. it just feels like it's another installment of a Wu Jin Yan anthology of costume revenge drama.
I agree with you. There has really been hardly any watchable Chinese dramas in 2024. For me, the problem with Chinese dramas is that they can't sustain interest or momentum for 40 episodes. Also I never truly feel that we see the interior life of a character. Everything is on the surface. On the other hand, some of the Taiwanese dramas I have watched feel so much more real on a human level.
Please give recommendations for Taiwanese dramas. I've been looking for new ones.
@@kflowers8276 Have you seen 'Imperfect Us'? I loved that drama except for the ending. 'Let's Talk about Chu' on Netflix. 'At the Moment' on Netflix. 'Love Storm' this is a drama from 2016 but I only just watched it. 'No Regrets in Life' another older drama that I recently watched.
@@jeanneb7989 Thank you for the recs.🙏🏾 I haven't seen any of these as I usually watch Viki for Taiwanese dramas, but they've been lax on updating. After finding where to watch these, I was happy to see many actors I'd seen once or twice in Chinese mainland dramas who caught my attention back then.
@@kflowers8276 True. I have a VIKI subscription that I'm thinking of cancelling cause there is nothing worth watching. On VIKI, 'Lost Romance' and ' When we get Married' are my favorite Taiwanese dramas.
Romantic dramas are all the same. You can only feel the difference in the quality of the script and acting in social dramas. Look at the Long Season | Man Chang De Ji Jie /漫长的季节. You will find in this drama all the levels of subtle layers of emotion in the actors' play.
❤❤❤Thank you so much for your hard work. I really appreciate it. I don’t have a lot of hours to sit thru bad dramas. Your critiques get me to find the best for myself. Thank you.❤
Obviously we will keep watching you, it's nice to know I'm not losing my head, that this year really is mediocre crops. I will watch your videos so I know when not to bother & when to try it & see for myself...
The Tale of Rose is the first CDrama I have seen that deals with the idea of body donation. I liked that they showed both sides and didn't make one side right or wrong.
As long as you are here, Avenue X, I am listening!
The Double drama is not forgettable for me its best❤
I can’t watch Luo Yunxi in anything because he is sooo skinny. How can a male lead look thinner than the practically anorexic female lead… it’s too much
YASSSS, he looks anorexic. it is very worrying
I actually fell in love with him in Ashes of Love & Love is Sweet. But his recent works just felt ungenuine for me. Like he's trying too hard to look super cool / handsome / charming.
He looks like he is ill
He's a good-looking man and a good actor. But he's much too thin and gaunt. Nothing ethereal about that at all.
@@adj5767 this %. Nothing ethereal at all.
I think that A Tale of Rose was a brillant drama that was a timeless consideration of the complexity of navigating the life journey of love, family, and career for both men and women. I think it made people uncomfortable because someone of the characters could be triggering. Liu Yifei always delivers a great character. And honestly, I am impressed with LGX's acting because he gave us a very palpable antagonist.
I have just finished 10 episodes of Tale of Rose, I must say for once, it was refreshingly sweet & realistic. Most C-dramas like to portray their leads having a more sedate & chaste attraction with at most only a few kisses here & there. But for once, the producers & actors had outdone themselves by realistically portraying the raw animal attraction & push & pull between Rose & Eric. And Crystal with her beauty, style & all womanly curves is the best choice for all those male bees buzzing around her. I am so looking forward to continue watching Rose & the vicissitudes of life she undergoes in her journey. to find true love. And my or my, what an excellent 22 year old Crystal makes for a 36 year old actress! Wow 😲
sad, AvX just skipped scenes of the tale of rose, cuz if you watched thru you can easily notice it's not her love life but it's about her life and her choices, regrets, and her growth. The same goes for other characters. Even LGX's character (oh, I despised him so much lol) wasn't the two-dimensional antagonist. My fav was her best friend and Yimei's bro, and I guess, I'm not the only one. Their arc is much more dramatic, so they and their storyline easily can win over the main protagonist's, but I also appreciate how the drama depicts this seemingly perfect beautiful rose's life as realistically as possible.
Well said! This drama deserves a better review from Avenuex.
Luo Yunxi has a strong core and looks perfectly healthy to me. With such a good complexion, appearance and steady acting performance, he is who he is and he is brilliant. The frame of reference to associate thin with he might falls is rather bias. Don't judge a book by its cover. And don't understand the need for people to express this matter. As for Follow Your Heart, absolutely like like like. It's aesthetically pleasing, fresh and neat. I get the story telling context, angle and creative, watched till ep 22. Both LYX and SY acting are great and there need not be a comparison. Is like trying to compare between the score of 99 and 98 out of 100--where's the point really. They are great in this drama acting and dubbing wise then they are great, period. Is not that hard to give credit when credit is due. (Well, since this is a rant site, consider this my rant.)
@@NancyTrujillo-ud4mmYes! She even subscribes to the rumors about him, believing them like fact! And then spreading them on her channel.

AvenueX, thank you. Yes, it is a very sad situation. Nothing is worth to be watch till now in this 2024. Nothing. Only one drama I can save: that one who tells a story in Mongolia, To the Wonder, with Mai Yili and Zhou Yiran. It is a blessing that I am so slow, and I am not in a hurry. I have lots of other things to do, so I am still watching a lot od old dramas that are so beautiful, satisfying and seriuos... Happy time for you and we all lovers of Chinese Dramaland even in its worst moment
I sincerely love your channel and would accept whatever reviews you make. I agree with all of them, but I still watch the dramas anyway.
Please do not apologize, I love love your take, I might not agree with all the takes but it sure is entertaining and honest.
I finally found some heart-pounding moments between Luo Yunxi and Song Yi in episode 16 today. I hope it gets better.
There are a lot of similarities between “Follow Your Heart” and “My Wife’s Double Life.” Both MLs are cops in the capital city. Both fathers were framed to be criminals. They both have a nemesis who would follow them around town to nail their mistakes or to take over the credit for their accomplishments. Both sets of leads met each other when they were young and went through disasters together. They both met each other years later without recognizing each other. But Luo Yunxi’s character seemed to spend all the day following the FL as her back and call while the ML from “My Wife’s Double Life” actually got some real work done (solving cases and catching criminals.).
Both “Follow Your Heart” and “My Wife’s Double Life” have really nice songs. I particularly like Luo Yunxi’s “Hanging on a Heart”, Jiang Dunhao’s “Relationship” and The8’s “Time Spoken In Ink.”
Jiayoooo ! I love your vidéos even tho i dont watch drama any more xD. I am waiting for you to be excited to check stuff out but looks like cdrama are diying in 2024 !
Your hair looks great in this video ❤
Totally agree with u - I actually watched Nirvana in Fire for the 4th or 5th time because nothing caught my eye.
The most recent drama I watched is 春色寄情人, decent but not like wow!
Have u watched that yet? Was hoping you would review that
I'm looking forward to the recs avenue ❤
The novel for The Double went past the war. I wish they had one more episode to finalize it because the war went on for a while with a lot of grief and denial so I agree it was rushed but the novel ending was kinda a letdown so I guess it’s a win lol. The way they reunite in the novel is the letdown of him just appearing after being declared dead so I appreciate the show more. Just needed another episode. Also some people that died weren’t supposed to and some that lived weren’t supposed to but I loved both. Love your work and interpretation
Thanks for the comments, it's so interesting.
Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much AVENUE X for your genuine feedbacks ...i always learn from you and you do influence me in the way of i will see through things ...
I just finish watching The Double. Yeah it's quite cliche as how many times the female lead kept winning and winning but I just loooooove the chemistry. Wang Xing Yue is such a great young actor. I almost forget their 12 years age gap because I really enjoy his performance.
I love The Double. Is the only drama i want to comeback home and watch it cuz I’m so excited for the next episode.
You certainly know how to give an intelligent review which helps viewers to be more discerning so as not to waste their time. I think it is high time that you create a story/drama which will be watchable, and unforgettable and brilliant. In addition, the script writers should watch your review to improve their scripts.
Fun Fact: Under the Skin season 2 just released some videos of the main characters and it has the same cast too!

I really do your reviews and comments about each new C-drama in dramaland. Most of the time i agree with you that the plot and the scene couldjve been better, but for the fun of watching I go thru the pain. I hope some good ones come along soon
The Double as an entertainning show worked and with its quality it managed to have a few scenes here and there that have struck the viewers and have become viral which helped to the drama big success : the rain and bath scenes in episode 17 for example
"Yes, it was great. The artistic moments were top-notch cinematography.
Leo Luo YunXi really needs to work on his figure. I believe he is intentionally keeping a slim figure but as you mentioned, for some characters it requires more of a muscle toned figure to be taken seriously. I feel like he is about to break any moment, I don't deny he looks graceful but it's impacting the delivery of his character.
I enjoy your rants lol, I agree with ya I had no idea about these dramas. Why am I still thinking about the spirealm, mysterious lotus cashbook and the ultimate note and the guardian when it comes to chinese dramas lo
You have to watch kdrama connection , it's thriller genre, very tight script writing - ull definitely enjoy. Nowadays I just watch like one drama a year - and I guess this is it for me this year
I like to watch your videos even when I disagree with you. Your analysis of the design and production values is always educational.
I loved The Double but I have not finished it yet. I just felt like the couple saw each other as equals and understood each other, flaws included.
I watch a lot of short dramas and right now Jades Fateful Love stands out. You Are My World was also very good.
You are so stunning! Have a wonderful day!
Off topic but your hair looks gorgeous here ✨
Where's the link to the bilibili video? I'd love to check it out.
You are so pretty😩😩😩
You are wonderful, that is why I still watch. You are honest, funny, bitter, but very sweet in your true desire for Chinese drama land to produce better shows.
My favorite Cdrama is Love Between Fairy and Devil. I went on a binge with C and K dramas for a few months in 2022. Just finished My Journey to You. It was okay. Miss the sparks between Esther Yu and Dylan Wang. Any good dramas you can recommend?
I love ❤ your hair !!! 😘 Looking great 👍
I wish you shared the link of that reviewer on bilibili
Please keep being truthful about your reviews. We don't need more people sugarcoating the truth. As a busy viewer, I need someone to let me know when not to waste mytime. When everything current is crappy, That's when I look at the best of 2000 whatever And pick a new drama to watch. Please keep up the good work. So I can use my viewing time wisly. And I appreciate your reviews on Korean dramas as well
I'm absolutely struggling with the Double/ Ep. 21 - does this show of stupidity gets better later on? This invincible Mary Sue who's lucky every time for some reason because the scriptwriter arranges everything for her - actually the actress plays the same character as in Yangxi Palace and I couldn't survive that one after 18'th episode. The only bright spot is the evil stepmother and the ML. But so far unfortunately they are not given too much to do. Depressing as the beginning was quite promising... :(
Plot wise is not that great. I only watched for the eye candy: Wang Xing Yue. I think they also knew and that is why they used more makeup on the ML than on the FL 😂
@@Mizwanderer1989 Yay! I thought I was the only one who noticed! 😉 Yes, and he's quite a good actor as well.

I think u should step away from Chinese drama land for a while
I do think shes noy even enjoying watching dramas anymore. I think i only lowkey hate watch this videos now because dramas ive been so passionate and enjoying like the double she only sees the flaws and doesnt see all the great aspects. A drama does not have to be 'perfect' to be good.

@@Novichevich i just go off of what my likes and common themes that i am drawn to. i somewhat follow Marcus Here.
@@alexisehimen3795 There is absolutely no comparison between Marcus Here and AvenueX. He touches on new and upcoming dramas in very superficial, mechanical way. There is no in-depth analysis, ever. He talks about sensationalist celebrity news or netizens' rants. He regurgitates other oranizations' ratings. That's about it, week after week.
Follow Your Heart is definitely slow but I'm still enjoying. Face-blindness is okay for me as a plot device but shapeshifting was so unexpected
I love watching and listening to your commentaries on various dramas. I started watching Chinese dramas with the story of Yangzi Palace and then the one with Rui's love in Royal Palace (or something like that title) and since have watched entertaining ones like Be My Cat as well as some good ones like Love of Thousand Years as well as others with Zhao Lusi. Yang Zi and Deng Lun matched so well visually (in my opinion) in Ashes of Love which made it even better to watch. Blue Whisper about the merman was good (seems they over tortured him though). Since those dramas I have had a rough time finding new dramas with complete episodes. They now keep trying to make people pay if they want to watch something. Seeing that the newer dramas aren't as good as the ones we saw for free I wonder what they are thinking. I am older and enjoy the costume dramas the most. My ideas are too old fashioned for modern themes. I still find holding hands to be romantic. I really liked Lost You Forever because of the character Tan Jianci played (the nine headed demon) and I enjoy Yang Zi. Seems I have been waiting forever for season 2 and keep searching for something to watch. I also loved the songs in that drama. I appreciated the English lyrics version of the falling snow from Yangzi Palace. Songs that are so sad and/or filled with longing are beautiful even if sometimes the translation is not completely clear. Still evokes emotions from the singer and the lyrics give enough translation to tell the story. The Double may not be that great but it was interesting until they stopped releasing any episodes if you didn't pay. I have to admit I get bored with too much war fighting/killing, too much of jealous females sulking and/or throwing fits over a man that never loved them to begin with etc.. Makes no sense to me but it does create drama I guess. Many beautiful actresses and handsome (sometimes even beautiful) actors but the story is really important as well as having something new/original in magic/fantasy to spark interest. I love happy endings and am disappointed when the main characters wind up dead. Makes me wonder why I bothered watching all the trials and tribulations just to get run over in the end. Your observations about the scenery etc.. are interesting as well as the authors/writers and directors and their works. I used to feel so at ease watching dramas but have come across a couple in the past year that had language (subtitled) that I never expected or wanted. Not everyone speaking English uses those words. There are so many words to describe how you feel about something it seems a bit empty headed to use certain curse words over and over. I am grateful to you and enjoy your information and input so much. God bless you always.
For the Double notoriety ; the team production or the DRama already won the Jackpot thanks to the first 4 episodes especially the Pilot episode , they nailed it ...even though the end is expected but the beginning has everything in the Bowl.
but too much romanticized, i agree
Have you watched anything in British Drama Land? There are some really enjoyable shows on Britbox and Acorn. I'd recommend Line of Duty and Happy Valley for starters. The new one by the Happy Valley writer, After The Flood, was also very good. And, of course, Vera and Shetland are top quality.
I'm sorry you're going through drama-malaise. I hope you'll regain some of that funny enthusiasm you had a few years back. I enjoyed your past videos analyzing phrases or puns. They were certainly my cup of tea.
For myself, 2024 hadn't been that bad. There were a few gems that took hold of me and in a way, it's good that they come once every months. It gives me a breather to sit back and rewatch, play around, catch dialogue, laugh at the BTS scenes and read reviews. IOW, I want to enjoy my drama through and through and not just snack and go to the next course.
Most of the dramas that had me chasing like an addict, you didn't like much or at all, so there's that. Case in point: The Double. I thought it was just a solid drama, filled with twists and turns and the dialogue was witty and sexy because of the pun-filled buns. I ate and ate and ate. I just loved the chemistry of the two leads. Every time they were together, their dialogue sizzled with tension and double entendres. So now I'm at the stage of snacking on BTS and reviews and replaying favorite scenes. This is all so satisfying to me while I wait for Lost You Forever, a book I've loved for years and the second part of which I'm dreading to watch. But I've never liked that ending LOL.
Best to you that there will be a few gems for you too.
What happened to episodes 39 & 40 of the Tale of Rose?
OK I finished Follow Your Heart. I am not as discerning as AvenueX. I love forgettable yet entertaining romance dramas. I give it a thumbs up. Was it funny? Yes. Did I smile most of the time as I watched it? Yes. Is Cheng Lei gorgeous? Yes. Did it have a happy and satisfying ending? Yes. Should Luo Yunxi gain some weight? Yes.
Basically, all the artistic moments in dramas, plus the unusual close-ups and facial expressions that you don't like (I'm talking about The Story of Kunning Palace)-I like the most.
Honestly I agree with your opinions on Follow Your Heart. I was bored from the very first episode, and don't actually know how they are gonna make 40 episodes work. It's a shame because I love Tang Dynasty and the shooting style of the drama, but the plot is draggy, and while the actors themselves are very good, I feel no nothing for the characters.
I am watching Follow Your Heart currently after losing interest in JOL2...it's eh...ok...watchable. We haven't had a major standout yet this year imo and I really want something to grab my attention.
Not surprised you have to tired
Tale of rose- I agree with you. After skipping and watching, I decided to restart once huo jinghua appears. But his appearance in the drama didnot work as anticipated for me. I think liu yifei suits more for young rebellious character than a matured 40 about woman😅
Heroes- It is too yellow. I feel like there are no "young" or upcoming chinese actors who can do wuxia dramas born after 1985. Hope hongkong won't give up on martial arts dramas/movies
Follow your heart- I could not go beyond ep 3 although I tried so hard mainly because of luo yunxi's line delivery. And he is cachectic and super pale that he doesn't look like a normal, natural human being, rather a clone
I totally agree with you regarding Huo Jinghua and the way he was used in 'Rose'. I looked forward to his segment as I have been a long time admirer of his acting. I was very disappointed especially as the synopsis said that he was Rose's soulmate. I didn't see any of that.
@@lorrainepaul5928 huo jinghua's character was so hastily done. He was only "used" to attract the audience since it is his comeback character after few years of absence
It's my personal opinion: Luo Yun Xi is too thin. So thin that I am not convinced about role he plays where he is suppose to be very strong. It's distracting that I can't watch any of his drama and actually enjoy it.
I agree, they’re both so skinny it’s jus hard to watch I loved him in Ashes of Love but since then he’s just lost so much weight 😢
I agree, he doesn’t have a healthy look. Is he sick?
I'm worried as well. He's my favourite cdrama actor so I hope he is well
@@rosasalas7208 No just crazy Chinese beauty's standard
It's painful to see him like that.
Can you do a review of Romance of the Three Kingdoms? Maybe compare versions?
Seconding this!
I also thought the same about the tales of rose that it is obviously not print out the reality of a woman's life in all aspect , specifically the beginning part was really not my type , first of all she is super pretty, there are many things she actually find easy because of her beauty privilege and also her family background. But in the 2nd half her marriage life was the most closest part with reality I would say because I personally have witnessed such man who loves to control women , and toxic in laws , so although 2nd half was too painful to watch it was still really good, then the 3rd half was also good as a sad romantic story tbh her chemistry with wallace huo was really my favourite, even in the short moment their interaction, heartbreaking moment was really touching. I didn't saw the ending but the dinner scene with her first love and the conversation they had was also really good. So personally it was nice watching for me but I wouldn't say it was something excellent.
Tbh, the double was really enjoyable untill the end I mean the ending part is just not what I wanted to see but still I can bear. The thing is that I actually heard briefly about the original novel and I have to say that the drama really didn't justice the novel where the female lead was epitome of independent, strong lioness where the drama is like kind of shadow or replica even her ex's character was really not week like the drama version he was more vengeful , aggressive and clever. But all thing aside it wasn't bad maybe if we had other interesting or good drama I wouldn't have watched this drama at all , but somehow we aren't lucky enough so this is what we get
Yes I also prefer novel female lead , I was really disappointed by how the drama made her so dependent on the male lead
She was a bad ass in the novel and I loved how focused and determined her revenge was
Wow, if 1981 is old, I must be ancient! Gracious me, I appreciate the laugh. Keep up the good work.
Legend of Heroes reminded me initially of a Spaghetti Western. I’ve never seen any of them so I didn’t know what to expect it was a cross between that and wondering if it was a Tarantino theme then it was uhh nope
The Double for me is a great example of picking and choosing the best scenes and plots from previous dramas and trying to make the audience think it’s originally yours by making the whole story fast paced per episode. You cannot tell me that scenes and plots from The Double are not A LOT SIMILAR from LOVE LIKE THE GALAXY. Even the actual looks of the male lead during the battle are very Ling Buyi. Ling Buyi’s 2 trusted guards, one being stoic looking and the other very silly and clueless are exactly the same. The male leads father’s story about defending the city and being betrayed by reinforcements not coming to help is exactly to a tea. How the female arrived to save the male lead just like how Niao Niao arrived via horse was also to a tea except Zhao Lusi really killed that scene because she was really riding an actual horse. They practically just twisted the revenge concept. Instead of Ling Buyi having a different identity and acting revenge it was the female lead in the Double. Also the male lead’s line telling the female lead to just be yourself that is the whole narrative the Niao Niao fights for especially with her scene with the Prince. So when I watched the male lead say that I really laughed because first the female lead doesn’t really have inner problem of being herself because she chose to disguise herself to enact revenge and oppose to Niao Niao were people expect her to act how regular girls should act as society deems then. I have no problem with having the same plot, but when you copy the exact scenes and even how it looks like that just takes it all away for me. It was fun to watch because it skipped the growth part. It skipped the boring part of the leads growing and becoming the characters they want to be. It just constantly gave sensational scenes that fills the eyes. Also, imagine being the villain for 30+ episodes as the Princess and just dying like that! If it was that easy to kill her they should have just plotted her death long ago. Again it was like that because it skipped all character development. It was let’s kill her this episode, so something big happened this episode. After watching do you really feel attached to the characters? Do you feel like you saw them grow and you understand their pain and why they did what they did? Did you feel invested that the two guards died? They were married but at the ending I was ok that they were not together, but in Love Like The Galaxy I was so upset that they didn’t show their wedding because I was so invested in their story, the pain they went through and the struggle of separation that I really wanted to see their happy ending. This is my review, please no hate as I am just stating my observation.
The killing of the guards really came across as gratuitous - just to have something "tragic" to illicit emotions from the audience for no reason. Yeah it was well paced so a good watch but I have no lasting impressions of each - it did provide a good time while watching it. So it served its purpose to entertain me.
I’m watching the double and skipping a bunch of of scenes. Now that you mention Love like the galaxy I understand why. I don’t Love Like the Galaxy.
excluding drama aspect of it all or the fact that love like the galaxy aired earlier than the double. For all i know the director took inspiration in terms of how he will direct the scene from love like the galaxy. I would never know...I just want to point out they are both based off an existing novel. Centered around transmigration and revenge. So it is not a surprise why there is a huge similarity between the two. Except the double's novel was published before Love like the galaxy. I also want to point out that I've been told the two guards in the double definitely existed in the novel as well so... technically the comparison is rendered invalid in a sense. Also from someone who read this plotline in several other novels centered around revenge and transmigration/rebirth and ones that were also published even before those two novels. I can confidently tell you that the storyline are all around the same. I even watched Love like the galaxy and found it was quite similar to another novel publish in 2013 and that was published before the other two novels. So... yeah
But i can’t able to continue love like galaxy eventhough i like the female lead. This drama is good in terms of plot which keep making me watch next ep.i usually drop Chinese dramas but double is the one which I watched til the end eventhough I felt ending is rushed.
I don’t understand when did tropes in a drama belongs to only one series? It can be used by any director & the difference is how well they r using it & portrayed the work.
Can you suggest me some other dramas like "The Tale of Rose"? I loved the drama
I love Mentour Pilot's channel. His videos about the scandal in Boeing is so riveting. I can't stop watching 🤣
After watching a bunch of new trailers from Tencent the other day, I went back to rewatch The Prisoner of Beauty's trailer! I know TPoB is still just an idol period drama, and it may never get to be aired... But that trailer is really a textbook example of how to make a trailer😭
I always loved 🥰 listening to what you have to say about Chinese drama 🎭 I’m watching 😅 be positive 👍🙏
I'm not well-versed on drama critiquing, but I do know that I like a good plot and have it well-acted. You mentioned the fact that wuxia dramas are getting worse at direction and acting and I even have noticed that of late. You will see an actor twirl around to block a sword but then becomes mostly bits and pieces of a fight scene that they splice together but it's staticky and disjointed and you just tell that the actor did not really do the fighting per se. I will make a comparison with "Love Like a Galaxy" where Leo Wu did all his stunts and you could tell the director did not chop it up. It was smooth, to my untrained eye that is. I tend to watch behind the scenes and you can see who really puts the work in. I will still finish The Double and I will check out Follow Your Heart to make my own judgment, but I still appreciate your input since it comes from experience and knowledge of dramas and all the little tidbits that go into them.
One comment about dramas of late, there are so many costume dramas and hardly any watchable moderns in the last couple months. Is this some type of trend that directors do and then there will be a slew of moderns coming up? Just wondering as I love watching costume and modern dramas back and forth, to change it up. I do appreciate a cute and good Rom-com without it being dumb. Case in point; Nancheng Banquet. Fast forward worthy.
Thanks for your critiques.
"Forces every supporting role to emphasize that the female lead is superrr pretty but it kinda only exists in their lines" Only For Love and Story of Kunning Palace exactly! 😂
I hope you can check out The Spirealm. (idk if its available in Canada) The adaptation was nice, storytelling, cinematic, styling and acting were rly impressive for small-mid budget production. I could feel their hard work to preserve the original script's sense and to keep the gaynegy by not changing the story's core and characters. they even made them more sensible for some part. I feel deeply sorry that the drama couldn't be aired. idk why but I guess they didn't make it through the censorship. T__T
She said in a Livestream from the clips she saw it looks bad so she's most likely not watching it :/ her words, not mine.
When it comes to Wuxia, I've found that the action scenes and fight choreography in some of Chinese historical movies are so much better than the Cdramas. In Full Red River, you believe that the people are really fighting for their lives.
Yes, more plausible. Nowadays wuxia has a stronger element of fantasy. By the way I wish AvenueX (or somebody else) told us about that Golden Age of wuxia in Chinese dramas. Does she mean the films with Jackie Chang and Bruce Lee? Wuxia genre has changed, no doubt, and it's become less realistic. But why is it so bad? Flying people are fun to watch. After all, if a story gives us interesting plot and characters, if it is emotional and yet thoughtful, then I'm ready to put up with less realistic fighting.
@@Novichevich Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee did Kung Fu - a different genre from wuxia which is mainly swordfighting in ancient dynastic times. Some classic ones from 60's to 90's from HK and Taiwan: Dragon Inn, Come Drink With Me, One Armed Swordsman, Golden Swallow, Swordman, A Touch of Zen.... to name a few.
@@asj685 thank you! I'll try my best to find and watch these.
@@asj685 thank you!
@@asj685 Already found and watched a bit. I take it, the films produced in 90th are considered to be the 2nd golden age. Hidden Tiger and so on. Fantasy crawled there, and they became "artsy". Interesting!
You are so brutal 😂😂😂
Even if you make a review of Sherlock, I'll watch it! Lets fangirl together hahaha.
It's a shame of how regressive the quality of cdrama these days. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who want to produce an excellent, well thought out story, but it seems like the industry constantly presses them to make something fast. Thats why we have so many hot fillingless buns.
I loved the double with all my heart, is not the best of all time obv but it was really good and one that I will rewatch sometime
Don't apologise! I love listening to you. I have been watching Chinese drama for à while and find the quality of storytelling failing. Especially the fight séquences. I don't care about bad cgi if the story ia good. Why do they care so much about color grading when they should be caring about characters ? I wonder if it's to get subscription with pretty trailers. It just lets the viewer down in the end. I feel so let down that i'm watching old dramas to get some happiness Back! Lol
You may like Blossom in Adversity. I think that was a really good story if you can let go some logic.
@@SuperKimmie72 I thought so too, and it had really good fight sequences, I thought.
@@machiajenniyeah, been a long time since my jaw dropped coz of fight sequences. Hu Yitian was spectacular in those scenes.
I'm trying to watch The Tale of Rose. I just feel like Liu Yifei cannot pull out a convincing female lead for me. I cannot sympathize with the FL and I find her not convincing and contradicting in ways that annoy me. I wonder if it was because Liu Yifei could not do the job to bring out the character, or that because the story has been changed to the point of contradiction, or that the plot itself just cannot connect.
It gives me frustration. If the novel's FL is the kind of charismatic and a bit seductive person like you said, I think I guess why I find it frustrating now. LYF's act does not bring out a character like that. It just gives me a sense of complex superiority syndrome that just not make me able to sympathize and like the FL.
I agree, I dropped the drama
I agree, I didn't find the FL sympathic either.
Thanks Avenue X. Chinese dramas across the board are Ok in the realm of film and show production. It’s a genre that I’ve come to enjoy for the product that it is. Prime example is The Double that had so many holes in the story but I enjoy it tremendously. I thought it was entertaining which is important for someone in my line of work. At the end of the day I want a nice cup tea while I escape and a lot of my Asian dramas provide a beautiful escape. I’ve started The Tale of Rose and it’s rubbing me the wrong way because of cultural differences. I might drop that unfortunately as I like many of the actors in the drama. Follow Your Heart, I will continue to watch it but I have to say it’s a filler until something better comes along. I started The Legend of Heroes and your right about the opening scenes that seemed so orange. What’s up with that? I’m a serious Wuxia fan so you can imagine how disappointed I was that I couldn’t finish the first episode. I’m still waiting for Lost You Forever? What gives? Anyway, thanks again and take care 🌸💃🏽
The last part of this vdo got me chilled. The part that talked about the high season of drama land to come.I'm so afraid that I may be bored to death...
BECAUSE, I'm not sure if all the S+ drama gonna be this entertaining like we consecutively enjoyed quite a good list quality dramas in this low season. LOL.
I just watched The tale of Rose, beautiful!! 10/10 not the typical history of cdramas
Maybe try to watch more non-romance shows? For example, I watched the mango tv mini serie "the disappearing child" a year after it aired solely because of your video and boy that was one of my favorite shows ever. There are several series one came out this year but I have not paid attention because those shows do not get much traffic. It is sad...
i had no idea chi sha was so young, i thought he was around my age
I agree with you i hate the ending of the double also. It ruined the entire show for me.
Heyy could you please give me the honest review on THE DOUBLE. I am thinking about watching it but only after all the episodes are available on the website.
@@theheartrender6343 i honestly loved it but not the ending. The entire episodes are available now at some websites. I think you will enjoy it.
@@ChrisPBacon007if the end is too good their business would run out. They need to keep produce more drama. It is good ending for people to look something more. If the drama is addictive and perfect than people would not look for other.
The ending they should let ml and fl marry and all characters represent at their wedding would be amazing but it would be perfect end and happy. People likely keep watch the show and other drama would not gain people.
please do a review on the Korean drama lovely runner!! 😂❤😂
The Double is the best cdrama of 2024 😊❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
I told it in previous video but I want to say again as you said you have no enough interesting chinese drama to watch , please check out the Korean drama " The Atypical family " , it has finished at the earliest june . It has a very interesting plotline full of mystery, superpower, romance and melodrama, also it has only 12 episodes so you can easily binge watch the whole thing .
The quality of mentour pilot's videos legitimately gives some of these cdramas a run for their money
