the best part of the movie for me was how real it looks. they filmed at real locations, built up real places, used real horses. sure, there are some blue/green screen scenes and CGI stuff, but the core is the real stuff. the actors do the horse riding, the fighting themselves. most of the young guys even grew their hair long, so they dont have to wear the fake-looking wigs. there is this green baby demon. they specially made a robot-doll that can move legs, arms, eyes, make face. really cool. thats why i wish this movie and the rest of trilogy to be succesfull. and i do hope it will get international release.
It took 10 years to prepare as they are filming the trilogy altogether. They had Lord of the Rings production crew as consultants to the process. Most of the young actors are untrained performers and they had to go through the gruelling 2-year process of training in ancient Chinese culture, war and battle arts, horse riding (all actors have to go through) and of course, acting lessons. The amount of effort spent on this film should have been the standard, instead of churning out meaningless films and drama series using untrained influencers, a problem in the entertainment industry in not just China, but in Asia.

Bilibili has a 3-part ~30 min each "documentary" on pre-production of these films, including trainings that "hostage sons"(?) candidates went through. Anecdotal account: BL cdrama "Guardians of the Lands" 山河表里 production team had a hard time finding a good -looking muscular taller than CXX actor to play the barbarian ML. Fans suggested Feng Shen film production because "it's full of big shirtless barbarians". That was how CMC was "found". The production team did consult people deeply involved with LOTR and The Hobbit trilogies, including Barrie Osborne. "Lots" of people involved in the Feng Shen production are Americans.
Also saw a graphic, cannot say whether it was based on real data. This film started out with more male audience than female audience. Soon enough, due to the hot guys in the film, female audience count began to climb then overtook male audience count. Not making "female" the main villain who made the king brutal and cruel leading to his dynasty's downfall problem helps too.
I do hope that this film comes to international cinemas, because this film sounds so interesting and fascinating. If it does come to Finland, I most definitely will go and watch it, no matter what.
Finally you’re reviewing this film! I have literally watched everything related to it (documentary, live stream, other promotional videos…) except for the actual movie itself 😂 hopefully they can make enough profit for international release 😢😢😢

Investiture Of The Gods is a 100 chapter novel and the english translation does take a while to read. First third is mainly about the 9 tail fox yokai causing many deaths in the kingdom. The other 2/3 of the novel is just non stop fights between 2 factions of taoist gods with 1 faction siding with the kingdom and the other faction siding with the rebels, so it is sort of similar to Iliad by Homer about the trojan war with greek gods helping on both sides of the war. At the end of the war (chapter 99), 365 characters (some humans who died and the taoist gods who died on both sides) were appointed as gods of various departments (based on the authority of the top taoist gods), such as gods of stars, gods of plagues, etc. In chapter 100, 7 of the taoist gods who did not get appointments left and became popular taoist gods on their own, also about the later life of the taoist god who was in charge of the appointment of the 365 taoist gods. The Legend And The Hero season 1 and 2 were able to cover all of the 100 chapter novel using about 60 hours. 9 hours of 3 movies can only cover a few of the more popular stories from the 100 chapter novel.
Can search by chinese characters. 封神第一部: 朝歌风云 (2023) creation of the gods part 1: song of chaos film characters are: Shang King who is getting deposed, Queen Jiang who is killed by Daji the 9 tail fox, yin jiao is son of the king, yin hong is son of the king, Daji is the 9 tail fox yokai, Shen Gongbao is the taoist god on the side of the king, Ji Fa who is trying to overthrow the king, Jiang Ziya taoist god who has the list of 365 people and taoist gods who will be appointed as gods of various departments, Nezha taoist god with flying wheels, Yang Jian or erlang taoist god with a 3rd eye, Lei Zhenzi taoist god with wings, taoist god sun the underground traveler is a dwarf, probably also deng chanyu is female taoist god who uses pebbles as weapons (becomes wife of taoist god sun the underground traveler). First 3rd of the novel has Daji killing Queen Jiang, the 2 sons of the king flee for their lives, the origin of Nezha, the origin of Lei Zhenzi, Jiang Ziya leaves the mountain.
The films re-focus the story on human dynastic changes so fewer gods and they have supporting roles. Censorship and consideration of playing length led to deletion of helpful contextual scenes. The director seemed to have agreed to release a director's cut version.
Wow now I finally understand where all those mythological characters come from especially the little boy with the fire wheels! Oh my God, I can’t believe why literally just watched all that I’ve missed so much content of yours and trust me you’re gonna get sick of my voice my name sorry by the end of it because I can’t imagine witnessing anyone that is so up-to-date and can translate all of that information into a 25 minute video on things that we love but we don’t speak Chinese or read Chinese so we’re never gonna know that stuff without people like you. I think you knocked out of the park. I think you’re absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to look at some more of your stuff and I hope this is the content you just keep bringing out because, you’re an absolute star. My opinion I’ve loved Chinese Japanese Korean station stuff always since I couldn’t remember being into things and you just gave me 25 minutes to the best so thank you thank you.
I have great respect and appreciation for the Chinese actors who are dedicated to their craft by training in so many ways to make their acting and roles so believable . They certainly do not have an easy life like those in the West, being constantly watched so closely by 'bosses' and fanatical fans who demand far too much from them. I hope these movies will be accessible via internet and that all the hard working actors receive the rewards they have certainly earned.
Thankyou for the recommendation 😮 I really like the historical mythological type of stuff so hearing you talk so positively about it makes me want to check it out!
I don't usually go to the cinemas but I'm dragging my husband for a movie date after this review. If the movie does well, remember you have a part in it. 😂 Thank you for your review!
I saw it yesterday and it is quite good! especially the bodies (cough) and the fighting scene in the end. I come to like Yu Shi, such an adorable in real life ❤
I watched the last night on one of the streaming sites and I thought it was pretty good. The main actress and that evil King played roles perfectly. Dialogues made sense and not a lot of stupidity in this movie. I wish could have seen in theater. I give it 7.5 out of 10.

It was super cool to watch! I remember first hearing it from my mom because her best friend in china’s cousin directed it! It was super cool to hear that
In France they released it in theatre (for only two days though...) for the lunar new year so I was very lucky to see it in a theatre last week! It was incredible, I sincerely hope that when the the other two movies get released in China, I will be able to see them on a big screen as well!
My only problem was that it was hard to navigate which 18 year old Chinese guy with black hair bun, white armour and white cloak, smooth face, and a sword, was which. :D
thank you AvenueX... it is indeed a "long" review, but totally worth of it... unfortunately in Europe we cannot watch this film and I wonder if ever it would be possible... Moreover, without subtitles it is for the majority of us completely impossible to follow the story... So, there are a lot, a lot of obstacles... And I am therefore very sad, indeed, very sad.... This would be a film perfect to me, but perhaps it would never be possible to watch it in Europe. Blessing
Finally a good movie, I grew up with Investiture of Gods so this was great for me. I’ve recently watched 新神榜 on youtube (an animation movie with the main character as Yang Jian), and really enjoyed that too. I also want to mention, finally handsome guys and not sick frail feminine boys. There was a massive surplus of stick thin pale men, and I appreciate the different aesthetic this time. Fantastic step forward! I do feel like the involvement of the western/American movie production was rather noticeable in the type of shots/sets given. I personally would have preferred a more classical Chinese set, but it was a fairly minor point.
Not you bodyshaming. Some guys are just born with thin body frame/built regardless how much they work out💀 As long as they're good actors and suit their character, who tf care about their figure. Unless you're someone obnoxious with backward toxic masculinity views. Have your own preference all you want idc if you're obessed with beefy men but there's no need to shame others with condescending words and tone 🙄
@@haoliou4347 Dude I literally said a surplus, and not that there can't be that particular body shape. I actually personally prefer more slender male builds myself, but when the large majority is like that and they don't fit with the character they're playing (e.g. general), then I think its a problem. Having more diverse body shapes and knowing to either bulk/loss weight to fit your character is important, and something thats been lacking in the younger generation of actors. If a male actor wants to play a muscular character and they can't increase muscle mass no matter what, then they shouldn't be playing that character (and vice versa)
晚上好! If I say that I literally stumbled over and running to see/hear your review of this film, after being completely amazed by your review of the Black Myth: Wukong, I wouldn't be exaggerating 😁✨ And I wasn't disappointed! And what's more I am so happy to hear that there will be sequels 🔥 Shi fen gan xie 💎 for such a brilliant review.
I never heard of this movie before, thank you for your recommendation. As I am a huge fan of LORT and mythology in general, I hope we get to see this movie in the international market someday. I am glad to hear that for this movie they picked up new faces and trained them specifically for their roles. If they would he chose an x or y top popular actor & actress in China right now, people would have said the movie is popular because of their traffic. The director was really smart here. And since everyone was trained to do so many things, we have the certainty that actors actually do their own schemes and have no doubles doing certain scenes for them. And I have to say, everyone is so good looking. I mean those actors have definitely been chosen to have some of the best natural looking faces for this movie.
Thank you AvenueX,it was indeed a long review but it worth the review for this epic mythology movie, it’s a gem,I wonder if it will be possible to watch this in uk and also to be on English sub as well, thanks to the production team’s,actors and actresses and also the the writer, what a great job.❤
This movie production may certainly edge out all other competition.. 😢 You guys so lucky, you're about to watch this movie. You made me drool over watching all those performances, Epic stories , big battles, sword fighting on a big screen 😢😢. What shall i do , i feel helpless and edgy😢. I want to watch the movie 😢
I also hope for an international release, I have wanted to watch the movie since you commented about it at the beginning of the year. I don't know how, I just hope it got released in my country. 🤞🤞🤞
Oh yeah, I remember watching this Movie (without Eng Subs unfortunately) nearly a year ago! I've haven't read alot of Fengshen Yanyi (& right now, I mostly just remember Nezha's backstory, aka Ch 12 - 14), but I did read enough to get an idea for Some of the Characters, mainly Jiang Ziya, Lei Zhenzhi, Shen Gongbao, Su Daji & King Zhou & (obviously) Nezha! Overall, I remember it being a Fun Movie & I didn't find any of the Special Effects being Noticeably Bad (outside of maybe the Adult Lei Zhenzhi at the end, though that was more "Fake Looking" than Downright Bad) with the Costumes & Sets all being SHOCKINGLY Good! Probably, gonna have to rewatch it again, hopefully with English Subs this time...
perhaps the best chinesw movie i have seen so far .... epic and now that i know how it was made, huge respect for the creators cant wait for the next two is there any english dubbed version available?
I'm from Spain and I'm someone that enjoyed a lot the stories and movies about Sun Wukong, and the animations about Ne Zha, the White Snake, and Jiang Ziya, even i play Genshin Impact because i really like the chinese fantasy medieval style, and The Heavens Official Blessing i would add too, but i didn't know about this Investiture of Gods book, and i discovered this movie by the luckiest chance today, its sad i couldn't know about this earlier and about this important book of China, but i will enjoy it today.
This was a really interesting movie review. I remember Fei Xiang in an interview with CGTN I think talk about this movie along with the director and another person. I had no idea he was an idol back in the day I only remember him talking about his time on broadway and how nice his voice sounded. I didn’t even know his other name was Fei Xiang because his English name was showing on the screen and the way he spoke just made me assume he was American. It’s great to hear he did a fantastic job in this film, I’m not sure I would be able to watch it in theaters in my city but hopefully they’ll be a way I can watch it online eventually 🙂
I would like very much to watch this movie in cinema, but i don´t think it will come to my homeland Slovakia. But i definitely check it online in the future. :D:D
I’m so glad I found you! Thank you for such detailed information! And I love that you play the guzheng. Due to my love of historical cdramas, I’ll be learning to play the guzheng as well! .. and maybe even a little bit of sword tricks 🤓
Thanks for your assessment of this film. I loved every minute of it! Yes, there are some dodgy CG elements, but I tend to roll with it, when I know the backstory of the production. I did wonder if Weta Workshop had a hand in the SFX, since they worked on both Wandering Earth projects, but it doesn't appear so. The sets, costumes, armaments, are brilliant - such attention to detail. The action is superb. Everything about it engaged me. I did find myself wishing there was a bit more attention to the art direction and cinematography - it was very basic, unlike the more poetic nature of movies like "The Empress and Assassin", "Painted Skin 2" or "Hero" among others, where colour is used more proactively as a driver of emotions. But maybe they were going for a more gritty look, which is fine, also. Just a quibble, on my part. The films were shot simultaneously in the same way Peter Jackson made "Lord of the Rings" and I found myself comparing the two productions for that reason alone, but also simply because of the overall epic nature of the tale. And seeing the end-credit sequence reinforced that (PS: don't walk out of the credits otherwise you'll miss a peek of part two!). Filmed in IMAX format, so yes, theatre is the way to go. The film has been released in Australia and New Zealand, and I think, by now, has seen release in the USA. EU and UK? Like Jackson's LOTR, I really hope that, after the trilogy sees its theatrical run through, they're released on BluRay as a boxed and extended run-time set, with making-of disks included. I think that might be a first (?) for Chinese cinema, if they did that.
seen good review on this movie; it seems the recently release No More Bet would surpass the box office of this movie soon although this movie has been released for close to a month
thank you for the review, I really liked the movie (went in for the hot men, stayed for the story) and it was great to learn more about the movie and the story behind it! When I watched this movie, it did not have English subtitles, which I took as a sign that it was not designed for international audience. the epic scenes were great, the story in the real world even with the fox spirit was amazing, but for the heavens realm - it is hardly understandable without Chinese cultural background…
I like your show. Marcus is my other C Drama source. Just finished LYF. One of the best productions ever in terms of the cinematography, the costumes, character arc, and the cast. Top 3 of the year imo. 9.7/10. But I am just a white guy from Texas who has to rely on subtitles so what do I know…
Yes we know about Kris Phillips through Andrew Lloyd Webber-Phantom of the Opera. Love Period pieces and cannot wait to watch either, grateful. From an astrological point of view (my work) he will be seen from this October this Month onwards all over the world, by Feb 2024 he will have Heavens Gate open up and SHINE! He has been challenged for years elementally but at 63 its smooth sailing. Woohoo!
I think I'm going to love that, hopefully, trilogy. And since I'm not a big fan of LotR I probably like this more then Tolkiens "Middleeuropean Mythology ripp of". :)
I enjoyed this mostly - it looks a million bucks (although not all the cgi does). I thought it was too long, had overacting at times and i didn't know who was who and what was going on at times. Worth a second view as there was so much though.
I am happy to find this film today. It is about my ancestor, the Zhou dynasty, Ji clan. How I became Zheng. I only dislike the fact that all Chinese film made our ancestor mixed with Fox Demon that is not even a true history.
Sadly, there is no other way to view this movie other than pirating it. I'm looking forward to watching it, though. Thank you for the review, so much amazing information about this. I read Romance of 3 Kingdoms, which had some amazing parts and some weird ones, so this being of similar age, I expect it being similar in story telling and amount of character + with fantasy element to it, but hey, I'm always for watching adaptations of ancient stories. I love Arthurian legends, Beowulf, Iliad, etc. Even Tolkien heavily based his writings on extremely deep studies of these ancient stories. I don't expect Peter Jackson's LOTR level with these movies, but it still looks amazing. Plus I want to learn more about heritage of our world's cultures. I'm glad it got made despite all the problems.
I lost count on how many adaptations of the story I’ve watched since young. Lolx~ It’s really a story that most Chinese knows, even for Chinese like me that are born in other countries
the best part of the movie for me was how real it looks. they filmed at real locations, built up real places, used real horses. sure, there are some blue/green screen scenes and CGI stuff, but the core is the real stuff. the actors do the horse riding, the fighting themselves. most of the young guys even grew their hair long, so they dont have to wear the fake-looking wigs.

Naran isn't only russian. She is buryat. A mongolian minority and shes very proud to be mongolian too. Which is so sweet of her
I envy you!!! i really want to watch this film! hope it will come to Europe soon!
really appreciate Chen Mu chi and Ci Sha as actors in other productions
The set and aesthetic was unbelievably lit cuh
thank you AvenueX... it is indeed a "long" review, but totally worth of it... unfortunately in Europe we cannot watch this film and I wonder if ever it would be possible...
You are SO good at this!
Loved it! Watched it. Can’t wait for the 2nd part!
I've watched so many clips of this movie and i really can't wait to watcht it in a whole. When is it available at the cinemas in europe😭😭😭
I really want to watch this. Hopefully its something that will be released internationally
More chinese movie reviews please!☺️
Big fan of LOTR here. I wish I could watch this movie.
They actually got the producer of LOTR for this film as consultant!
@@SiriProject Seriously? I really hope this movie is released internationally very very soon!
Thank you AvenueX,it was indeed a long review but it worth the review for this epic mythology movie, it’s a gem,I wonder if it will be possible to watch this in uk and also to be on English sub as well, thanks to the production team’s,actors and actresses and also the the writer, what a great job.❤
I so hope it shows in theatres in Canada!!
It will release in Australia in mid September, so I am sure it will come to US/CA after
@@Arqua888 yayyyy!! 🎉
I’m glad you like it 🎉
Just watched it today, loved it!! When is p2
I so wanna watch this!!!! Hope they will bring it to international theaters.
Thank you for the recommendation AvenueX.
I am absolutely happy to see this adaptated. I read it years ago ang i reckon it was my very first manhua. I'll definitely watch it.
I also hope for an international release, I have wanted to watch the movie since you commented about it at the beginning of the year. I don't know how, I just hope it got released in my country. 🤞🤞🤞
please tell me if it gets international release. I love stories like this.
Good luck finding it online
perhaps the best chinesw movie i have seen so far .... epic and now that i know how it was made, huge respect for the creators
cant wait for the next two
is there any english dubbed version available?
Thank you for the review! I would love to see it, as long as it is dubbed in English.
Please let us know when we can view in the US, would really appreciate it. I love this kind of genre.
Thanks so much for the update. I’ll be on the lookout.
These are so wonderful, thank you so much for always being so knowledgeable and so thorough…this video is one of your best, I think!
Hope they will show the movie in the States soon. I was such a fan of Fei Xiang when I was a child.
The way you describe the king and his hostage sons sound very much like 40k's emperor and his primaries. Maybe some inspiration there.
I thought this was a manga. Oh wow. I'm going to look for this movie. I love the Chinese culture and movies
Thanks for the breakdown!
Thank you so much for this video, after your review, as usual I'll wait for the movie to come 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I was looking forward to this movie. Your review got me even more hype. Have you watched Lost in the Stars yet?
Fan girling Chen Mu Chi 🎉😍
When will it be available digitally?
I anticipate to see this movie I have checked on RUclips but not there. Where can I see this movie?
very very very good movie .. remind me my childhood i love to watch chinese myth film. love from malaysia.. vfx superbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
I love the old tvb version
Ah yes I heard about everything that happened to this film. Very unfortunate but at least now it's released and can try to get some money back
seen good review on this movie; it seems the recently release No More Bet would surpass the box office of this movie soon although this movie has been released for close to a month
thank you for the review, I really liked the movie (went in for the hot men, stayed for the story) and it was great to learn more about the movie and the story behind it!
When I watched this movie, it did not have English subtitles, which I took as a sign that it was not designed for international audience. the epic scenes were great, the story in the real world even with the fox spirit was amazing, but for the heavens realm - it is hardly understandable without Chinese cultural background…
A Chinese Epic Mythology story in the style of 'lotr'? - Sign me up!!
So many Chinese mythology movies already made since the 1980s ...
I like your show. Marcus is my other C Drama source. Just finished LYF. One of the best productions ever in terms of the cinematography, the costumes, character arc, and the cast. Top 3 of the year imo. 9.7/10. But I am just a white guy from Texas who has to rely on subtitles so what do I know…
hi avenue X i am wondering if i can repost your review clip to Facebook Feng Shen fan group or not ?
Yes we know about Kris Phillips through Andrew Lloyd Webber-Phantom of the Opera. Love Period pieces and cannot wait to watch either, grateful. From an astrological point of view (my work) he will be seen from this October this Month onwards all over the world, by Feb 2024 he will have Heavens Gate open up and SHINE! He has been challenged for years elementally but at 63 its smooth sailing. Woohoo!
Was it even made it to outside China theaters? Would be awesome to see it here in Canadian theaters.
Good work. Just subscribed
I’m sold when you mention abs lol
Thank you Thank you for this review.
Can or will we be able to see it in Canada? Sounds great
I am happy to find this film today.
Did you watch lotus mystery? What's your opinion on that drama?
Is there any way to watch outside of china right now?
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL MOVIE ❤
Just before I watched your take on it I showed my son the trailer and he said hmmm som parts look fake and others look great and turned away! 😅😅😅
i read the comic version by tony wong Legend of Emperor I
