One more for your list: "North and South" starring Richard Armitage and Daniella Denby Ashe. It's about a London gentlewoman who is forced by circumstances to move to Milton, an industrial town in northern England. She clashes with a mill owner (Armitage) about worker's rights and class issues. It's a love story, too. And you can stare at the gorgeous Mr. Armitage for four hours.

Can I interest you in the Spanish TV series "Isabel" and its sequel, "Carlos, Rey Emperador"? "Isabel" is, of course, about the rise of Isabella the Catholic to power as well as her reign alongside her husband, Ferdinand of Aragon. "Carlos, Rey Emperador", meanwhile, is about their grandson Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. There's also the movie La Corona Partida, which takes place in the years between Isabel and Carlos. They're not always the most accurate of shows but goddamn do they make good TV and they're three of my most favorite period dramas of all time. 🤩 Apart from those three, I also recommend Maximilian, a three episode German-Austrian miniseries about the romance and marriage of Maximilian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy (Charles V's grandparents). 😄
I watched season 1 of Isabel, and I really liked it (Michelle Jenner is amazing!). But I couldn't find the other seasons in my country... or Carlos Rey Emperador either. I'll try to find Maximilian... never heard of it, but I'd love to watch more german-austrian period dramas, so thanks for recommending it!
It was Isabel not Isabella, and Fernando not Ferdinand. Just like Catherine was Catalina, they change their names to an english version of them. They are quite accurate but their names are not
Other fun series: _Magnificent Century_ is a Turkish period piece set during the height of the Ottoman Empire. _Gentleman Jack_ is set during 1830s England and follows the tumultuous life of Anne Lister and is based on her diaries. The Rise of Phoenixes is a Chinese drama based in a mythical ancient Chinese kingdom. Love in Chains is a Russian period piece set in the 19th century.
One more thats relatively new and I think would go between Pan Am and Daisy Jones and The Six is Eva Lasting. Showcases the lives on 5 friends that spend their high school years in an all boys public school in Colombia during 1976, their world changes when they meet Eva Samper, the first woman to enter their now mixed school. She introduces them to a different life, literature, feminism and the realities of her past. Highly recommended!
So many more for people to discover than what’s on this list. I highly recommend The Forsythe Saga, part I and II. Great story and outstanding costumes.
It's so great that you've included The Law according to Lidia Poët, an Italian period drama about a pioneering woman well worth remembering and celebrating! And Matilda De Angelis, the actress playing her, is such a delight. The 2nd season has also come out, have you seen it? In general I really appreciate that you also included non-English speaking dramas, not just British and American ones, I mean.
I'm glad you enjoyed the list! There are a lot of non-english period dramas I left out, but they'll be on my next list for sure. There are some really great ones I've watched from Corea, Spain, Italy, Germany and France... and when I get a little extra time I'll start watching turkish dramas too, because everyone keeps recommending them to me!
@@PrincessPlotline - Very much looking forward to that video, then! I am curious to watch some Korean ones that you recommend because I've never seen any at all. Likewise, I've never watched the Turkish dramas but I've heard from pretty much everyone that they're great.
Shows to add: Barkskins. Based on travellers from France coming to Canada and battling with the French Natives, and British for land. Magnificent Century: about Sultan Suleiman and his harem affairs and such.

Leaving out Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, and The Alienist are a big - BIG - mistake for this list. I would also mention Krøniken, which is a family saga from the early 50 to the 70 about a family-run radio-turned-TV factory.
Watch all the BBC's perid dramas. Emma, wives and daughters, and BBC ' north and south and bleak house. You won't regregreat it. Call the midwife and velvet ia good too.
There is another lovely show with the lead from Gran Hotel it's called Tiempos de guerra or in English Morocco: Love in Times of War. It's set during the Rif War of the 1920s and follows the lives of a group of nurses who arrive as volunteers from Spain. It has everything - history, costumes, love, action, adventure, suspence. It's 13 eps long and complete.
Another show that just came out on Amazon Prime that I really loved is „My Lady Jane“. It’s about the political drama concerning the line of succession to the English throne after King Edward VI‘s death and is extremely entertaining and fun, but also romantic, in my opinion! :)

The Grand Hotel, a version of Gran Hotel for Egyptian audiences, was even more enjoyable to me than the Spanish original. I’m American but the way they shaped the roles for the ensemble cast was well-done, and I loved the costumes and scenery.

XV) since her teens until her death, with all the problems she has to reing because she was a woman and all the things she has to face during it, as the conquer of Granada, the expulsion of the jews and the discovery of America for example. You missed Charite (pre-WWII) and it's sequel series (Charite at War - WWII, Charite Cold War, etc.). They're set at the Charite hospital in Berlin before, during, and after WWII as you see the rise of anti-semitism in Germany and the effects of the war on the staff at the hospital. It's really good and has a very narrow, but interesting focus.
There's two other versions of the grand hotel. One from mexico as a telenovela and another from Spain, which i think is also a novela. They both are in Spanish. The Mexican one is so good.
I've only watched the spanish version, and to me it was perfect! Y just adored Julio and Alicia. They had so much chemistry! I'll keep me eye out for the mexican one so I can compare. The first 3 dramas written by Phillipha Gregory are pure fiction. She makes Elizabeths mother, Jaquetta Woodville, a wich and Elizabeth Woodville as well. Also, she acuses Margeret Beaufort of killing the princes in the Tower.
To be fair Margaret Beaufort probably had at least something to do with the princes. But I'll say that the first series is the only one worth watching. The White Princess was atrocious! The book was so much better!
It's a shame that only few of these are G or PG rated. There are a number of Jane Austen movies not mentioned, besides the unfinished Sanditon Jane Eyre, Miss Potter, Thoroughly Modern Millie etc, that could have got a mention.
This is not a list of movies, only tv shows... and I only include shows I've watched myself, because I can't recommend something without watching it first. But I did include Sanditon (the show).

Apart from those three, I also recommend Maximilian, a three episode German-Austrian miniseries about the romance and marriage of Maximilian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy (Charles V's grandparents).
I loved the series! You can watch them in Spanish tv if you speak Spanish and I think they are quite accurate !
It was Isabel not Isabella, and Fernando not Ferdinand. Just like Catherine was Catalina, they change their names to an english version of them. They are quite accurate but their names are not
Other fun series:
_Magnificent Century_ is a Turkish period piece set during the height of the Ottoman Empire.
Thanks for all your suggestions! I'll keep them in mind for future viewing.
Just started watching The Empress
Good!
I'd never heard of it. I'll try to see if it's available in my country, thanks for the suggestion!
@@PrincessPlotline Of course! It's a Netflix original series so start there!
Merlin for those who like period fantasy dramas
That was a good show!
So many more for people to discover than what’s on this list. I highly recommend The Forsythe Saga, part I and II. Great story and outstanding costumes.
Yes, there's a ton of really good shows out there... but I have to keep my lists down to 30 minutes tops or nobody will watch them!
0h, Yes The Duchess of Duke Street an amazing series .
Shows to add:
Barkskins. Based on travellers from France coming to Canada and battling with the French Natives, and British for land.
Magnificent Century: about Sultan Suleiman and his harem affairs and such.
I'll have to watch all these... thanks for the recommendations!
Wow! Fantastic list! I've seen a lot of these but I've got 15 more to explore!
I'm glad you liked it!
War and peace is my favourite! Been wishing for a similar series for years! Thanks for the list
Thank you for watching!
Home fires needs to be on this list!!!!!
Heard really good things about that show, but I haven't had the time to watch it yet.
Thanks for reminding me!
Loved Home Fires! Wish they had continued the series.
Thank you so much for posting this. Period dramas are my fave. I am surprized however that you missed out on Mr Selfridge.
Thank you for leaving a comment!
Period dramas are my favourite too, but there's still a lot of them I haven't watched yet.
I try to recommend only the ones I've watched myself, that why Mr Selfridge is not on the list.
I'll keep it mind for future viewing... so I can include it in another video.
I loved Pan am!! It was fabulous. I was so sad when they cancelled it. I've seen nearly all of these. Some that I'm going to check out. Thanks.
I still don't understand why they cancelled it. I loved that show.
Thanks for compiling this list!!!! Greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for including Bonfire of Destiny. Found it on a recommendation list.
Also recommend to see Band of Brothers and The Pacific before seeing Masters of the Air.
Another WWII Era series is SAS: Rogue Heroes about the formation of the Special Air Service.
You're right Band of Brothers and The Pacific are also a must-watch.
I hadn't heard of SAS, but I'll try to find it, thanks for the recommendation!
Catherine Cookson books are good tv dramas made in the 90s i think. All set in the Victorian era in the north of England. Lots of them were made. Ie The black Velvet Gown, The Mallands, Colour Blind, The Dwelling Place. These are all very enjoyable.
I've read quite a few books by Catherine Cookson, but I've never seen them on screen. I'll keep my eye out for them, thanks for the suggestion! And all the others as well!
Today I uploaded my first period drama recap (I plan to recap the pilot episode of every new show I watch). Here's the link if you want to check it out:

Yes plus The Wingless Bird . The Black Candle . The Glass Virgin . The Rag Nymph ,.The Secret, Tilly Trotter Trilogy , The Malan Streak Trilogy, Feathers in the Fire , The Girl and The Fifteen Streets with Sean Bean/ All truly amazing films great historic facts.
War and peace was brilliant. I loved the casting ,especially Pierre. I liked Audrey Hepburns portrayal of Natasha years ago but this was an excellent series.
Yes, and it was also beautiful to watch. Great cinematography.
No it was not. They literally changed characters in some important points.
Glad you mentioned Gran Hotel!
It's one of my favorite period dramas! I was glued to the screen for days when I discovered it.
@@PrincessPlotline me too! and basically my whole family
My fav so far, Outlander, Victoria, Anne with an E, Downton Abbey, A League of Their Own, The Crown.
Those are some of my favorites too!
If you're up to date with Outlander, I'm recapping season 7 as it comes out.
Here's the recap of episode 12 of season 7, if you want to drop by.

@ is season 7 the latest? I’m not watching it yet. Will wait untill all episodes have completed broadcasting on Netflix 😁
@@primakrisnawati yes, season 7 part 2 is the latest (part 1 aired about one year ago). And season 8 will be the last.
Warrior, Mad Men, and The Queen's Gambit are good ones.
You're right, Mad Men and The Queen's Gambit are both wonderful. I've never watched Warrior, but I'll keep it in mind.
Loved your review! I've seen probably 2/3 of them, but now I have a list to see the rest! thanks so much!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!
Wow, Lesley Manville is a hard-working woman! I saw her face in at least 3 of these.
Yes, I noticed that too! Kate Phillips is also in 3 (or maybe 4) of these shows. Some actresses are just perfect for period dramas.
Hi..I also want to recommend “A Hazard of Hearts”. It features a young Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Plummer and Marcus Gilbert. Also the American mini-series “ The Thornbirds” with Richard Chamberlain.
I loved the Thornbirds, but I never watched the other show you mentioned, so I'll keep it in mind!

For everyone fanycing something different, I'd suggest some Top Tier chinese historical dramas, the costumes are exquisite, the acting is amazing, and the story is all you can dream of. Just at the top of my head there's :
Legend of Zhen Huan
Story of Yanxi Palace
Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace
Royal Feast
There are sooo many more but it's my personnal favs, they are all on youtube with subtitles !!
I've always wanted to watch a chinese historical drama, they all look very interesting... but the subtitles always go too fast!
@@PrincessPlotline ruyi’s is a must go then !! I bet you’ll love it
Oh yes I love them. They have such beautiful costumes and great storylines. I love that they have so many episodes too
@@b.m.t.h.3961 AND that the story is finished ! No fears of a show getting canceled mid-plot !
yesssss someone giving gran hotel some attention
I loved that show. I was glued to the tv for weeks, watching one episode after the other.
@@PrincessPlotline honestly same, when i started watching the show only season 1 was out and i finished it in a single afternoon and since i fell so hard for it i rewatched it the morning later all over again😂😂
Watch Mixte also known as Voltaire high. Its on prime video and depicts the first coed school in France. It’s very good!
I'll check it out! Thanks for the suggestion!
Any love for Murdoch in 1890s Toronto?
I haven't watched it yet, but I'll keep it mind. Thanks for the recommendation!
Oh yes yes yes. Excellent series
I LOVE Outlander, The Great & Pride And Prejudice! I was looking for something new to Binge. Thanks for this
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've also started recapping Outlander, to prepare for the end of the drought... november 22nd can't come soon enough for me!
Becoming Jane, the duchess, Mansfield park are great too
Thanks for the suggestions!
Becoming Jane is lovely but it’s a movie. Isn’t this just series?
These are good movies not series
Bridgerton is period drama version of Gossip Girl.
I think Gossip Girl is better... because you learn her identity at the end of the show.
1923 is excellent and for those who like foreign language shows, Ruyis royal love in the Palace.
Yes, 1923 is wonderful! I'm saving it for a western-themed video. 1883 is wonderful as well (it's the beginning of the Dutton Family saga)
There are some really interesting shows here, thanks for making this video! Love the editing ❤
I'm glad you liked it!
I just LOVE that this is in chronological order ❤
I'm glad you liked it!
Leaving out Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, and The Alienist are a big - BIG - mistake for this list.
I would also mention Krøniken, which is a family saga from the early 50 to the 70 about a family-run radio-turned-TV factory.
I will only recommend something once I've had a chance to watch it... that is why the shows you mention are not on the list.
Watch all the BBC's perid dramas. Emma, wives and daughters, and BBC ' north and south and bleak house. You won't regregreat it.
Call the midwife and velvet ia good too.
I watch a lot of BBC dramas, but I also like to watch shows from different countries, to mix things up a bit. Thanks for your suggestions!
I hadn't heard about Tiempos de Guerra... I'll look it up. Thanks for the recommendation!
So many great stories 😁
Glad you like them!
I’d Add The Time in Between and The Vineyard both based on the novels by Maria Duenas. Exceptional list!!!
I've never watched them, thanks for the recommendation
Another show that just came out on Amazon Prime that I really loved is „My Lady Jane“. It’s about the political drama concerning the line of succession to the English throne after King Edward VI‘s death and is extremely entertaining and fun, but also romantic, in my opinion! :)
I watched a couple of episode, and I really WANTED to like it... but I find the "fantasy" part very distracting in this show.
@@PrincessPlotline Fair enough, I must admit that I was also weirded out by the fantasy aspects sometimes, so I really can’t blame you for disliking it. 😂😂
I realised I have seen about 40 on your list and the once I missed are mainly early to mid 1900’s dramas that is not my favourite cup of tea anyway. I actually found 2 though that I’ve missed and will try to watch asap. Thank you for a great list!
Thank you for watching!
You are missing one of my absolute Favorites - Miss Fisher´s Murder Mysteries. If you haven´t seen it, it is absolutely wonderful

Thank you so much! I've just started the channel yesterday. I hope it does well!
Testament of Youth, The Way We Live Now, Tess of the d’Ubervilles, are good recommendations.

New and for you to add The Hardachers and Rivals
There'll be more lists in the future... when I've managed to watch another 50 shows to share with you all.
I haven't seen it, but I've been told that the Turkish series "Resurrection Ertugrul" is very good. Has anyone seen it and would they recommend it? I've never seen a Turkish historical drama but I love to try new things all the time!
I've never watched Turkish dramas either (mostly because I hate subtitles/dubbing), but I heard they're all pretty good.
I didn’t know what I was expecting going into the cook of castamar but my my was it a wonderful watch!
I loved the story, and it was not at all what I expected.
I had to come back to this video to recommend a show that I just remembered and that's great: "La catedral del mar" (The sea's cathedral) based on a book around the construction of a real basilica in Barcelona in the XIV century, really recommended! there's two parts and the main character is interpreted by the brother of the actor of Grand Hotel, I hope you'd give it a chance
Thanks for the suggestion! I heard about it, but I didn't have the chance to watch it yet. There are so many good shows out there!

There's a really useful website called "just watch" where you can search for the show you're interested in, and it tells you if it's on Netflix/Prime/or whatever in your country.
Reign was so amazing
I loved it as well!
I’ve watched some of these & they were fantastic! Thanks for this amazing video

Berkely Square in four parts excellent
I loved the white queen, and the Spanish princess. Although the latter is painfully inaccurate.
I agree... but I don't mind if a show is inaccurate, as long as it keeps me entertained.
@@PrincessPlotline I agree in general, but the Spanish princess misrepresented Catherine so much it hurt my historical soul. I was glad it didn't portray her as an old hag like most other shows, but her character was assassinated.

I'm don't think Outlander is a medieval show... but I do agree on it being wonderful!
@PrincessPlotline yeah i mean like before industrial révolution .. victoria âge show
The Grand Hotel, a version of Gran Hotel for Egyptian audiences, was even more enjoyable to me than the Spanish original. I’m American but the way they shaped the roles for the ensemble cast was well-done, and I loved the costumes and scenery.
I didn't watch the egyptian version... but I loved the spanish one. The chemistry between Julio and Alicia is off the charts.
I have one more for your list: The tv series "Isabel" from TVE, that it's about how Isabel of Castille (s. XV) since her teens until her death, with all the problems she has to reing because she was a woman and all the things she has to face during it, as the conquer of Granada, the expulsion of the jews and the discovery of America for example.
It has three seasons and the actors there are great!

@@PrincessPlotline Oh!! I will check it out!! Thank you!
Also, I don't know if in the rtve page, you can see the series with subtitles.
I've never watched either of those shows. They sound very interesting, so I'll keep them in mind for next time. Thanks for your suggestions!
There's two other versions of the grand hotel. One from mexico as a telenovela and another from Spain, which i think is also a novela. They both are in Spanish. The Mexican one is so good.

The first 3 dramas written by Phillipha Gregory are pure fiction.
She makes Elizabeths mother, Jaquetta Woodville, a wich and Elizabeth Woodville as well.
Also, she acuses Margeret Beaufort of killing the princes in the Tower.
As I'm not a history buff, I don't mind the lack of accuracy (as long as the script and the acting are good, of course)
Downtown abbey is the best❤
It's certainly one of my favorite shows!
You nailed it 🔥🔥🔥🔥💆🏻♀️ so organized and can't be more perfect 🎉 i am in love with THİS list already and i am satisfied so much that i am afraid i should start to watch now to finish it before i die 🤭💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Where can you watch all of these
It depends on your country. I recommend you visit a website called "Just Watch", where you can find where each show is streaming in your country.
My Lady Jane should be added now and two of the main women of bonfire of destiny also star in the limited series Women at War during World War I which is also a great show. There’s also a show called Marie Antoinette on Disney+
I watched a couple of episodes of My Lady Jane, but I didn't like it very much. I can't get past the fantasy bits. They really annoy me.
Thanks for the other suggestions, I'll keep them in mind for next time.
Of course. ❤. If you’re ever interested in paying someone to record in English, let me know. I am a professor of speech communication and am always looking for side work.
I wish I could pay someone, but this channel is not even monetized yet.
And when it gets there... I'm not sure what kind of revenue it would provide.
But I'll keep it in mind, if things go well. Thanks for the offer!
Loved this list, but noticed that not a single Jane Austen movie or series made the list. ??????
I'm glad you liked it. The list was meant to be only series, no movies.
I didn't include any Jane Austen ones because I haven't watched any. Only movie so far. And I don't like to recommend something until I've watched it.
Let me know your favorite Jane Austen tv series, and I'll include them in the second part of the list once I get a chance to watch them.
Thank you for the list. I have to admit that the majority of period dramas I grew up watching would be considered old. But, on the subject of Jane Austen there are a couple of adaptations that came out in 1995 that are truly worth the watch. Pride and Prejudice (1995 TV series) and Persuasion (1995 movie).
@@twilightbabe123 Thanks! I'll keep them in mind!
You can also add Emma (2009 tv series) to your list, I personally love this version more than the movie.
