- Meet 'Demon,' a 19-year-old Ukrainian mortarwoman seeking revenge. She volunteered for the Ukrainian army to fight against Russia in a mortar unit. Her team fights in one of the most hotly and bloodily contested areas in all of Ukraine, Bakhmut.
Scripps News international correspondent Jason Bellini had rare access to this young soldier. With Russian suicide drones prowling overhead, they met in a bombed-out theater just a few miles from her position on the front line.

I'm in my 70's. Joined the Army at 15 years old, served 16 years as a soldiers a great many more years in another heart hardening capacity. I'm sat here with tears running down my face listening to this young lady talking about the deaths and feelings of loss which caused her to consider her next step, her mother encouraging her and the steely purpose which came as a result and then the support and wisdom of "Witch" in harnessing that evolution in a human to assist in a team effort of survival not just for her unit, her country but for democracy world wide. Not convinced some of the democracies deserve her dedication but that's for another post. I hope she survives this horror forced upon her country and lives to fulfill her wishes, find another man deserving of her love and have children she can bring up to be proud of her and maybe even emulate her. Please ensure this is spread worldwide. She has to know there are those of us who admire her and can empathise emotionally.

At the moment they still have a chance by extorting as much blood from the RuZZian war criminals until the Rusian people finally start to rethink and stop their unnecessary and unjust war. The alternative - a Russian victory - would mean an obedient puppet regime in Kiev and a fascist police state based on the Russian model, resulting in a wave of refugees of all young, able-bodied Ukrainians, the likes of which Europe has not seen since the Second World War. She and others are fighting to ensure that she can avoid this fate and one day live in peace, freedom and democracy in her homeland.
Commendable indeed but also a sign of the depletion of Ukrainian front line forces. A whole generation of men is lost to this war

The best advice I can think of comes for the after war emotional part, don't let hatred consume you for when it is finally over that cannot be all that's left of you, compartmentalize your rage & hate so you can put it on a shelf when you're done with it. Those you've loved & lost risked every tomorrow they were ever going to have so that their country & every one in it could have a future, that includes you. FIGHT, WIN, LIVE, SLAVA UKRAINE.

But there is one moment that I experience every day (I’m 66, I live in Kyiv, there are weekly Russian airstrikes) - abt the hatred. My daily and hourly hatred of Russians is so strong (and destructive as you’ve mentioned rightly) simply ‘cause it is ineffective. If I had the opportunity to do the same job as this girl, the hatred must’ve gone, replaced with the calm.
I see she's calm enough, this girl, and there probably won't be any problems with her mental health. Cold and productive hatred during the war is a bridge to a long life after that, I hope. Like the old warriors of the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army of 1939-1960s), who lived to be 100.
So maybe these young people have a good life ahead of them. I hope.

It was a practice since Napoleonic wars where officers and their regiments are given breaks before facing uncertain death, and to recollect themselves. The most famous examples of this practice was with the main character of the book and movies of All Quiet On The Western Front

“Mortar woman”, as a Marine Corps 0341 ( mortar man) veteran, I like the title. Those who claim women shouldn’t serve in infantry rolls have probably never served at all. This woman holds her own-I hope her future aspirations come to fruition and I’m sorry for her loss.
And why is there a whole Wikipedia article about why women lower the combat power of units?
