This is a really good review and one I've been hoping for. I want to add a few small things For flick stick Splatoon does sort of have a work around, Y as a camera reset defaults to the direction you are facing, while this is no where near as good usually it does actually work well with Squid Roll. If you do a backward squid roll combining Y flicks the camera to face that direction. I still don't personally care much if they add it but some form of functionality is there. I do also want to give Squid Roll more credit. The ability is super fluid but the skill in being able to parry attacks and a burst movement option tied to it is huge. But most importantly squid rolling of walls allows moving through stages to be way easier, and in general makes using the walls way less of a bad option. In Splatoon 1-2 approaching via wall was kind of terrible because it was predictable and slow, but being able to roll and shoot while falling and use squid surge adds much needed mixup options that make climbing them feel like a more balanced option. I think with time and players being used to them it will be even more clear how nice a change it is. I do hope the netcode can improve but that and the map design to me are the big disapointments as a hardcore fan. That being said I still agree its easily the best game in the series, and a lot of QOL improvements are nice. Hopefully we can see more improvements through the continued updates.
Another thing they added for 3 is that your ranks and unlocked/bought gear are stored on their servers. Did you know that in Splatoon 2 that was all stored IN YOUR SAVE FILE? That's why 2 didn't support the cloud save back up, because you could just restore your rank from a back up save. Crazy, right? Now if your Switch has to be replaced you can download your save and get right back in it.
REALLY?! omg i literally lost all my save data in 2 because my switch broke and i got it replaced so glad they fixed this now i don't have to worry about it
@@BlazedKiller308 Yeah. Storing ONLINE PLAYER RANK in a save file is the dumbest thing they could have possibly done. You could literally edit your save to change your rank.
I think another huge improvement the game did is that they actually gave you a reason to use your coins now. You can find the same piece of gear you already own from a shop to upgrade it to have more sub abilities and now they have a mini gacha game with coins at the lobby. they also got tickets for the weapons and if you really want a specific weapon like me that wanted the 52 gal from the gecko I can just pay 3 tickets to get them quicker. makes it more welcoming for older players that just want to play with their main weapon from the very start without having to deal with the long level up process. Also the fact that you can in theory get any gear with any ability you want, although the grind is big for it, the fact that it’s an option it’s just really nice to have. Overall a lot of good changes
Oh man, this is gonna be interesting. Nerrel and Splatoon seems like a neat combo! I’ve been undergoing a crippling addiction to this game, which I barely had at all when Splatoon 2 came out. After 100% completing Alterna with every single weapon I’ve just been doing countless Salmon Run matches and grinding cash for some sick gear. I’ve actually been digging Tableturf quite a bit, once you understand the rules it becomes a nice little distraction to whittle away at while petting your cat or something. My only major grievances are the frequent connection issues, and the baffling way in which Scales are distributed. Right now there’s not much incentive to actually slay Cohozuna when your performance feels so disconnected from your loot. Regardless, I’ve been having an absolute blast with this game. College and basic housekeeping are the only things keeping me from just marathoning Anarchy Battles all night.
2:39 This is a totally correct point, and I've been screwed by it more than once, but a single sacrifice play or quick dodge through that Slammin' Lid's drop zone will make it drop onto the Steelhead killing it instantly, and opening up that Slammin' Lid for damage by anyone who can get above it, AND halting the output of mobs from the Slammin' Lid.
The losing animation thing is really great. I can now actively point my middle finger and scream horrible swear words at them while looking at them. In Splatoon 2 it felt more like you were screaming at your own team but that’s thankfully no longer the case because the enemies are always the A holes my own team is NEVER at fault (I swear)
It is still surprising that flick stick isn't an option considering that turning on gyro doesn't let you look up or down with the stick. If flick stick was an option, that would make sense. But as is, I would still want to look up or down with the stick with gyro aiming
They STILL haven't fixed that? The fact that I can't look up and down with the stick if gyro is turned on is the only, singular reason I don't use gyro in Splatoon. Hasn't at least one playtester or dev mentioned giving the OPTION after 7 years?
@@enzog1078 sure you don't need it. Like how in some racing games you don't need to use the triggers and can just use the face buttons. But just like in those games, the other controls are better
The netcode in 3 has been a much worse experience for me than 2. Yesterday I tried playing with a friend and had 15 disconnects, errors, and similar things happen in two hours.
Yeah I went back to play splatoon 2 and it felt so much more stable in general. I’m hoping once the initial release hype starts to fade away it’ll get better. Sidenote people are so much less aggressive in splatoon 2 it’s insane

Yeah, it’s actually worse in 3. Not only do you have to watch the winning team gloat, but it’s longer than the previous games too. There’s like 3-4 different results screens you have to watch before you can opt into the next game.
I'm so deeply glad it's good. I've spent the entire time since its announcement silently despairing whether all that time waiting would be wasted on a game that didn't hold a candle to 2, but I can safely say this is the best one yet. Ain't perfect, not by a long shot, not with how janky the online is. But when it shines, it shines bright.
At first seeing the other teams winning screen instead of the loss screen was a good addition and I totally would of aggreged with your point about it, then they added emotes. Taunting emotes. That's when I realised I much prefer the loss screen.
Had always been interested in the series, but for some reason or another didn’t pick em up. It came out at the perfect time for me between jobs, and has been a fun time learning all the ins and outs of the mechanics and controls. Very satisfying when it all works right, but man those network issues kill about half my playtime… I’d still recommend it just for being a shooter that’s downright fun.
Something important to know is that all gear is viable now, you can change even the main slot on the gear with enough chunks, truly the splatlands hold the drippest people in this world
It's a good thing the gameplay is so good because those communication errors and other internet-related issues are super irritating (though for me, they did happen much less often outside of Turf War). Otherwise, Splatoon 3 is great; the connection problems are my only major issue with it.
If you haven't played the octo expansion, you should do so. The singleplayer campaign in 3 is the follow up to the expansion. For those who have played it, how do you think it compares to 3's campaign? I personally liked the expansion more.
Octo just barely beats 3's campaign, but its close. 3 has mercifully few of those painfully difficult levels, but Octo's ending is a religious experience. They're both great at the end of the day.
I’m not sure if I’m alone in this opinion, but for me the single player campaign really felt like just more octo expansion with a new (and I will say the best) hub world, and due to the huge similarities between the two, including the ending, while not mechanically but in the core concept of the reason for the fight, it all felt like a rehash with having the scenery of the levels be floating objects, to navigating a building, and a grand finale with some major consequences, but more on that last part in the spoilers below. Also, the change in scenery from desert to snow was kinda a bummer, since I liked the desert part of the game very much as far as the hub went. Gonna go into spoilers & more detail below, so be warned! I think having the worlds not each have a boss is a bit strange, or at least to me, and the bosses felt lackluster compared to the designs and mechanics in 1 and 2. I enjoyed the building of tension before a boss started, and the uniqueness to each design too. This time it’s just the announcers, and that’s a huge miss, since you know what to expect by the time you get to the first boss, and I think each boss is sorta mechanically lacking as you kinda just shoot them until they’re down, where the other bosses in the series had a mixture of shooting but also threw in some obstacles such as climbing. Luckily, Grizz has a pretty fun fight, though I do wish there was more to it, an extra layer or something perhaps? The final boss of the first game is still my favorite for the variety DJO introduces with having to chase him and overall using all the mechanics of the game in some way, and while Grizz does kinda have this you more or less just collect continently placed salmon eggs and chase him as he kinda slowly attacks you one attack at a time, opposed to S1’s Octavio’s more layered attacks. As far as the final phase goes, I wish we were more involved somehow, rather than just sucking up the goop and fighting the same enemies we’ve been fighting the entire game. Have smallfry (or I guess bigfry in this case) be controlled by the player, maybe have Octavio throw bigfry like how it works in game as a replacement for the bomb. (Also, I expected DJ Octavio to make a reappearance as a 2nd to final boss when he was taken away by the goop, but no, he just reappears for the finale. Rather unfortunate since I think he has the best bosstrack in the game.) Also, is it just me or is the enemy variety this time around lacking? I noticed they didn’t use every enemy from the previous entry, and even then not a lot of new additions to the enemy cast were made, which is disappointing since I really liked the new enemies, I just wish more were introduced. If I think of anything more I’ll add it to this conversation or this message, and apologies for how rambly this is.
Your reviews are always fair, funny, and insightful. It's an instant click when I see a new vid from you. I think the card game is quite fun, but I just haven't spent too much time on it because I'm grinding out levels to get weapons.
One of the biggest upgrades from 3 to 2 that I think would've been cool to mention in that section was the near entirely overhauled special selection. The specials in Splatoon 2 ranged from broken unintentionally to broken intentionally, and while some of the larger offenders are still in the mix (looking at you, map wide homing missiles that reveal your location and force you to move to not get one shot) I don't think there are any strictly bad specials in 3.
Yeah, the stringers seem a bit weird at first. If you're not charging them, they're short-range spread guns. If you are charging them, you can take people out in about two hits. I've grown to like the Reef-Lux, mostly because Tenta Missiles and because it covers ground quickly, which is a fair payoff for non-exploding arrows.
I clicked immediantly. Nerrel you could post just about anything at this point. Ever since I first heard your voice I was locked in and I've no plans of leaving any time soon.
I will say this, very positive Splatoon 3 does in fact have its own dedicated server. My uni's wifi is Type D, which doesn't support P2P connections. Whenever my friends wanted to play Splatoon 2, we would have to connect to a mobile hotspot. Splat 3 does work on my uni's wifi, so it can't be P2P connection
According to Oatmealdome they use a new server system for matchmaking but the normal gameplay is peer to peer: twitter.com/OatmealDome/status/1571264799119495168
So splatoon 3 kinda sorta if you squint hard enough has.... Uhhhh not dedicated servers but servers that will act as relays to an otherwise normal p2p session on restricted nat types. It does mean more latency but nintendo probably figured "better than nothing"
I could never get into the feel of the controls of the Splatoon games, gyro or no-gyro. Could never quite put my finger on why that was. I’m guessing that its being entirely third-person, and that the ink is pulled downward by gravity, are part of the explanation, though.
I also wish you could do more in the lobby while waiting, I'm sure there's some technical reason why but I should be able to interact with things like the terminal, lockers, and friends online while waiting.
Nice quick review that sums up the game and delves into all of the relevant details pretty damn decently, awesome work. Good editing too. pretty valid points raised with the critique too. I basically play splatoon like it's flick stick tbh, highest sensitivity and using the camera reset button repeatedly to do quick 180's "Like an uninteresting board game" *cutting to gameplay of repeatedly placing the highest number cards at random* made me laugh
Regarding flick stick controls: You can use the "re-center camera" button (X) to snap the camera in the direction your character is facing. So if you want to quickly turn the camera, you don't need flick stick controls. Just walk your character towards that direction (which you'd probably be doing anyway) and then re-center your camera.
Great review man. I’ve been having a ton of fun playing it and all the small improvements to the gameplay have made this entry more than worth it for me.
Going from the splatoon 3 beta back to playing splatoon 2 was like playing smash wii U after trying Ultimate. The changes aren't too obvious starting out unless you're very experienced with the game, but returning to the old one feels so slow and poorly designed by comparison.
For the bosses on top of each other problem, in that specific instance you could've killed the steelhead by triggering the falling of the slammin' lid. It's a common strategy at higher level play. Some people even keep them alive a while so they can do it repeatedly.
As a Splatoon 1/2 player I'm surprised to see Nintendo actually commit to making the news skippable and removing the Salmon Run schedule. Felt like something they would never change it despite the complaints. Maybe map rotation has a chance to get adjusted as well. Just will have to wait til Splatoon 4 for it lmao
Is there no option to make the gyro aim in splatoon 3 let you aim vertically with the gyroscope AND analog stick? It feels really bad to me as a result because no other shooter does this even botw
I agree with the positivity even after losing. My W/L ratio is horrible and and i still have fun and never came out frustrated. Id also like to talk about localization. But ill spare you the details and just say that is fun
infuriating how nintendo still drags their feet in regard to online. anyway great vid nerrel, its rare to see gaming youtubers have something actually intelligent to say about new games
Has anyone else finished a battle, got past the results screen and winning team's victory animation, and loaded back into the lobby only to see a message that says the battle was not completed? I hate that.
This is insane. I was literally JUST watching the exact episode of ATHF you pulled the first few Carl quotes from like 20 minutes before this was uploaded. I had to pause the video and make sure I didn't still have HBO Max playing I was so confused.

Hey, Chara, I'm interested in hearing your opinion on S3's stage design. Do you have a video about it or plan on making one, by chance?
Another thing they added for 3 is that your ranks and unlocked/bought gear are stored on their servers. Did you know that in Splatoon 2 that was all stored IN YOUR SAVE FILE? That's why 2 didn't support the cloud save back up, because you could just restore your rank from a back up save. Crazy, right? Now if your Switch has to be replaced you can download your save and get right back in it.
REALLY?! omg i literally lost all my save data in 2 because my switch broke and i got it replaced
so glad they fixed this now i don't have to worry about it
@@BlazedKiller308 Yeah. Storing ONLINE PLAYER RANK in a save file is the dumbest thing they could have possibly done. You could literally edit your save to change your rank.
You’re much clearer and more specific than 99% of reviews and it’s appreciated.
Since gear can be upgraded past star level 3, I'm expecting the xp boosts you get from it to make the chunk grind much more bearable, but we'll see
Oh man, this is gonna be interesting.
I’m glad that someone made a review I could really trust!
Never thought nerrel would make a splatoon video
Oh come on its got gyro aim, he gotta
Man, wouldn't it be CRAZY if a multi-BILLION dollar game company invest a bit more money improving their online service? That's CRAZY, right?
The ending of this video perfectly encapsulates the feeling of paying for Nintendo's online service.
💀
My heart broke when he disrespected table turf lmao. I love that game mode
@@QuintessentialWalrus you literally don’t need to though. It’s perfect how it is lol
@@enzog1078 sure you don't need it. Like how in some racing games you don't need to use the triggers and can just use the face buttons. But just like in those games, the other controls are better
@@enzog1078 Perfect for you, sure. How would you be affected if other people had the option to change it for themselves?
@@QuintessentialWalrus It's so strange because literally every other Nintendo game with gyro controls let's you look up and down with the stick.

This is why Nintendo has it's netcode the way it is. Nerrel solved the mystery of it all.
Heh. Nintendo's online gameplay in a nutshell.
11:30 those were the worst 30 seconds i've ever experienced on youtube and i've seen the brick video at least ten times by now
The netcode in 3 has been a much worse experience for me than 2.
2 was also a hot mess at launch.
@@leftovernoise it so wasn’t
@@PickledKong64 it so was

for real dude, you’re my favorite reviewer and one of my favorite channels on youtube. You just have a way of really getting across how you feel in a real genuine way instead of a “youtuber” way and that’s really refreshing! so happy that you keep making videos man they really make my day :)
"When you lose, the game doesn't rub it in your face"
proceeds to show the winning team doing emotes to rub it in your face
Yeah, it’s actually worse in 3. Not only do you have to watch the winning team gloat, but it’s longer than the previous games too. There’s like 3-4 different results screens you have to watch before you can opt into the next game.
It just rubs it in your face a different way. I guess whether it's better or worse depends who you ask
I actually hate seeing the enemy team win more than seeing my team lose.
With the steelhead under the Slammin Lid at 2:47, if you swim under and squid roll out of the lid's shield, it'll slam onto the steelhead, killing it
Had always been interested in the series, but for some reason or another didn’t pick em up.
It came out at the perfect time for me between jobs, and has been a fun time learning all the ins and outs of the mechanics and controls. Very satisfying when it all works right, but man those network issues kill about half my playtime… I’d still recommend it just for being a shooter that’s downright fun.
I could listen to you talk about anything. Your voice is so smooth, and you articulate yourself so well.
Thank you for making me watch a video about a franchise i've never played.
Something important to know is that all gear is viable now, you can change even the main slot on the gear with enough chunks, truly the splatlands hold the drippest people in this world
As they say in the splatlands
"you lip-synch, we drip ink"
Honestly, I'm not sure which one I prefer between the two. They're pretty neck and neck for me in terms of being great single player modes.
@@sentientblender the painfully difficult levels were some of the best (except matchmaster with the rapid, that was just evil)
Rather unfortunate since I think he has the best bosstrack in the game.)
Also, is it just me or is the enemy variety this time around lacking? I noticed they didn’t use every enemy from the previous entry, and even then not a lot of new additions to the enemy cast were made, which is disappointing since I really liked the new enemies, I just wish more were introduced.
If I think of anything more I’ll add it to this conversation or this message, and apologies for how rambly this is.
@@EnderMan59 but 3 has every single enemy from either game, except the octoball which is only in splatoon 1.
Thank you for not making hour+ long padded out reviews. Your stuff is always such a blessing
I could rewatch the intro so many times, ATHF will never get old. Not even a Splatoon fan but great video.
Nerrel is an Aqua Teen Hunger Force fan. Just when I thought he couldn't get any better, he goes and raises the bar. Fuck I love Nerrel.
What’d you expect
He should totes review zombie ninja pro am tho
Anarchy battles have two rotations now. Maybe you only play turf war, but I think this is a big improvement.
He might not be level 10 yet
@@brain_cell He has played Splatoon 2, so he can do anarchy battles without getting to lvl 10
It’s an improvement, not really a fix to the problem he has with the rotation system.
I love whenever Nerrel talks about gyro so much, it makes me sit through a video about the Nintendo franchise I despise the most.
Same
lol why
i've never gotten a "the connnection is unstable" message in this game
Your reviews are always fair, funny, and insightful. It's an instant click when I see a new vid from you. I think the card game is quite fun, but I just haven't spent too much time on it because I'm grinding out levels to get weapons.
Nerrel what have you done. Your going to put Splat 2 videos in my recommendation feed
Guilty Gear community when a character is gender nonconforming: 😃 / 👿
Splatoon community when _everything_ is gender nonconforming: 😻😻
Yeah, the stringers seem a bit weird at first. If you're not charging them, they're short-range spread guns. If you are charging them, you can take people out in about two hits. I've grown to like the Reef-Lux, mostly because Tenta Missiles and because it covers ground quickly, which is a fair payoff for non-exploding arrows.
I'm really hoping we get a future silent Hill 2 remake video after it comes out. I'm curious to hear Nerrels thoughts
I clicked immediantly. Nerrel you could post just about anything at this point. Ever since I first heard your voice I was locked in and I've no plans of leaving any time soon.
glad to see my favorite Salmonid frotting youtube channel is back
I will say this, very positive Splatoon 3 does in fact have its own dedicated server. My uni's wifi is Type D, which doesn't support P2P connections. Whenever my friends wanted to play Splatoon 2, we would have to connect to a mobile hotspot. Splat 3 does work on my uni's wifi, so it can't be P2P connection
Omg same I’m so glad that I was actually able to play it with my college’s wifi too, that was one of the reason I almost didn’t get it at launch
@@ailma0400 Yeah, it would've sucked for the both of us if it didn't work
According to Oatmealdome they use a new server system for matchmaking but the normal gameplay is peer to peer: twitter.com/OatmealDome/status/1571264799119495168
@@Nerrel Gotcha, my bad for the error
So splatoon 3 kinda sorta if you squint hard enough has.... Uhhhh not dedicated servers but servers that will act as relays to an otherwise normal p2p session on restricted nat types. It does mean more latency but nintendo probably figured "better than nothing"
I could never get into the feel of the controls of the Splatoon games, gyro or no-gyro. Could never quite put my finger on why that was.
I’m guessing that its being entirely third-person, and that the ink is pulled downward by gravity, are part of the explanation, though.
Saw this from Squid School’s stream, really good video!
Honey wake up, Nerrel posted a video.
Also I'm leaving you for Nerrel.
3:05 tbh. This is my favourite mission in the game. It just so satisfying to cover literally everything perfectly
I also wish you could do more in the lobby while waiting, I'm sure there's some technical reason why but I should be able to interact with things like the terminal, lockers, and friends online while waiting.
i love your style and its refreshing to hear positivity from you, especially on a game i love
What the hell Nerrel uploaded a new vid almost a week ago? This didn't appear on my feed SCREW YOU RUclips!!!
Nice quick review that sums up the game and delves into all of the relevant details pretty damn decently, awesome work. Good editing too. pretty valid points raised with the critique too.
I basically play splatoon like it's flick stick tbh, highest sensitivity and using the camera reset button repeatedly to do quick 180's
"Like an uninteresting board game" *cutting to gameplay of repeatedly placing the highest number cards at random* made me laugh
I didn’t pay attention to the Splatoon 3 updates leading up to its release but this video genuinely has me excited to jump back to this franchise.
8:09 Some people would pay good money for that.
Loving the Carl quotes in the beginning
good review. I liked how funny you were in the review. I hope they do get dedicated servers eventually.
I’ve been having a ton of fun playing it and all the small improvements to the gameplay have made this entry more than worth it for me.
cant wait for someone to find you and see that you drew your terrifying model of tingle
Always love seeing new Nerrell video to start my day. This game slaps, I think actual players will notice the huge improvement over 2
When he showed where the locker room was all along I dropped my jaw
I've missed your sexy voice tones and insightful, witty and yet comedic videos
Going from the splatoon 3 beta back to playing splatoon 2 was like playing smash wii U after trying Ultimate. The changes aren't too obvious starting out unless you're very experienced with the game, but returning to the old one feels so slow and poorly designed by comparison.
Wasn’t interested in Splatoon but the "pooped my pants" thumbnail got my attention.
Love the new quiet voice. Very soothing.
Was just thinking about picking this one up, but the netcode's a dealbreaker for me, banger video though, thanks nerrel
Is there no option to make the gyro aim in splatoon 3 let you aim vertically with the gyroscope AND analog stick? It feels really bad to me as a result because no other shooter does this even botw
The one thing nerrel forgot. No they didn't add it and it's extremely annoying, though I got used to it pretty quick
It's been like that in every Splatoon game.
@@Gestersmek that sucks :( cause I sure don't like it. I'd like the option to aim in every direction with the stick and gyro at the same time
It's so much faster, smoother and more accurate to gyro up. It's also easier to make your center all catywompus if you at vertical stick movement.
@@RiahGreen I don't think he forgot it. It's how the past 2 games have controlled and it works really well
I agree with the positivity even after losing. My W/L ratio is horrible and and i still have fun and never came out frustrated. Id also like to talk about localization. But ill spare you the details and just say that is fun
I never had any camera issues. I don't think I had any problems with the single player that weren't my own fault
2:40 Bad example used. Trigger the saucer one and it insta kills the bomb one.
Yeah, at a higher level you kinda have to learn to use the bosses to kill the other bosses.
@@Rarchieo Meanwhile Steel Eel will ink block your chance to kill or revive anyone when spawned atop another boss.

This is how reviewing is done.
"The Connection Is Unstable" I've never actually seen that message playing of these games ever!

This game has been gaslighting me into thinking my internet connection is way worse than it actually is.
It's been 7 years since the first Splatoon?! I'm getting old
Has anyone else finished a battle, got past the results screen and winning team's victory animation, and loaded back into the lobby only to see a message that says the battle was not completed? I hate that.
That happens because somebody disconnected on one of the teams.
My connection is hard … and unstable.
2:22 Nerrel when he sees a giant fat green blob with a nasty jaw: *I understood that reference!* 😃
This is insane. I was literally JUST watching the exact episode of ATHF you pulled the first few Carl quotes from like 20 minutes before this was uploaded. I had to pause the video and make sure I didn't still have HBO Max playing I was so confused.
Watching the other team do emotes when I lose feels more like rubbing it in than just looking at my woomy's upset face.
