The 2nd chapter in the Friday the 13th franchise gave birth to one of the most recognizable and celebrated horror icons in horror history, Jason Voorhees. The popular opinion in the horror community is that the simple formula of Friday the 13th is much better the 2nd time around. Do I agree?

Continuity issues aside, I wanna know how the hell Jason found out where Alice lives. I just imagine him with his burlap sack mask walking around town with a map and a phone book until he finds her apartment, then walks his ass _all the way_ back to camp. lmao

The novelization of part 2 explained that Alice moved back to Crystal Lake to confront her demons from the first movie, so all Jason had to do was sneak around and stalk Alice for a couple of months.

In the book, Alice went out to the lake one day to revisit the scene. Jason almost got her there, but she got in her car and drove off before he could strike. After that he wandered around town each night until he found the car.

He was more realistic in part 2 than the other Fridays to follow. The flour sack, a more natural body type, more natural movements. I could picture some psychopath hillbilly just like that in reality (minus his immortality issue of course). Sometimes it's not the most fantastic which is the scariest, but what you might actually encounter in your own life that is.

Jason stalked his victims cunningly, quietly, and sometimes grudgingly as with Tommy Jarvis and Tina Shepard at one point, but not recklessly, and luring them to their deaths. After killing his victims, he usually hid the bodies to prevent others from raising the alarm and to create more terror when his next intended victim would find it. If Jason had any virtues left, it would be that he never killed children under the age of thirteen or pets (The novel Hate-Kill-Repeat implied that he was responsible for the deaths of two children in a family, but the murders were never witnessed and they may have simply been unintentional collateral damage), and when he killed, it was always quick and their suffering was not long unless they struggled against him. Another possible virtue of Jason is shown when he saves Lori Campbell twice from becoming Freddy Krueger's victim after she saved him from getting killed by the dreamstalker himself; though it is not actually known if he saved her on purpose. Jason truly hated Freddy Kruger for tricking and using him. However, in Freddy vs Jason vs Ash, he was shown to be willing to cooperate with him, in return Freddy used the Necronomicon to boost his intelligence.

My theory with Jason showing up in part 2 is that he survived almost drowning in the lake and eventually after hiding out in the woods because of how scared he was, found his mother and together they lived in that shack. With being obviously more traumatized by almost drowning and the bullying, Jason's mother vows revenge for the torment and near death her son endured. So she starts killing all these teens and after Alice kills her, Jason vows his own revenge on anyone who comes to Crystal Lake. People say it is explained in part 2 but realistically Pamela would KNOW Jason was alive and with how close he was with his mother, he wouldn't be hiding from her too, that just doesn't make sense. But that's just my theory haha

No, we see Jason rising from the lake in part 1 itself, and I'm not talking about the ending where he drowns Alice, I heard that the comics reveal him being possessed by some evil force present in the forest, which revives him and gives him regeneration and superhuman strength.

Five year jump in between Part 1 and 2 if I remember. And I'll go to my grave swearing that part 3 buff/hockey mask Jason was influenced by Lord Humungus in The Road Warrior (1981)

    • @07foxmulder
      @07foxmulder 4 года назад +1

Not sure. The 3D effects guy on part 3 was a hockey fan and happened to have some equipment on set. He used a Red Wings mask for a lighting test, the director happened to see it and loved it. And one could argue that the mask from the second was more of an homage to The Town That Dreaded Sundown rather than The Elephant Man.

A theory about why Jason is putting the bodies of some of his victims near the shrine to Pamela's head is because he thought that if he killed enough people she'd come back to life and he was basically offering the bodies as sacrifices to her. That's another reason why for a little bit he thinks Ginny wearing Pamela's sweater is actually Pamela resurrected because Jason thought he'd finally completed his mission and killed enough people and that his mother had come back to him. It must have pissed him off when he realised that no matter how many people he killed she'd never come back.

You realize that in those days they didn't plan on making sequels, prequels and pre-sequels right?
They did movies and if you got a hit, then they would make a sequel or not. I don't get this whole thing about character development, they are going to get kill! At the end of most slasher movies there is going to be a confrontation between the bad guy/girl and the good guy/girl, the rest are just fodder to create tension and develop the main characters, the whole thing about the dream sequence finale is to get you excited about a new sequel (if the movie does good and you get funding for another one), I don't think it would have the same effect as they do it now: Jason Will Return (on a black screen). It surprised me that you didn't mention the thing about running and looking back, tripping and doing it all over again! Anyway That is my opinion!

    • @amberkelly3187

You need a little character development so when they die it makes an impact. Whether you are sad they are gone or glad they got what they deserved. If they are just random people it makes less effect.

Audiences did not have to have every single detail spelled out for us. There are obviously some things not important to the story. For instance, how Jason found Alice might be the phone book. People's phone numbers and addresses were listed, most of the time and everybody got the book for free every year. Stalking was easy.
Speaking of stalking, Alice was supposed to be more of a lead but had a stalker try to break into her home. She quit appearing on screen until just in the last few years.
One of the reasons this movie is better is because Paramount was advancing money for exclusive distribution and it was a solid property guaranteed to bring in a return, so casting could be a bit better. Amy Steele had a great career throughout the 1980s. This movie begins approximately 5 years after the first movie. The prologue wherein Alice is killed takes place a few months before the main body of the movie. Pts 3 and 4 take place at the same time, consecutively. I don't really think he's a ghost story, though he does haunt his territory. Sidenote: Freddy Krueger was a ghost story - at least until they started with the demon getting trapped in New Nightmare, and then in a reverse meta-meta to homage, got called a dream demon by the male lead in Jason vs. Freddy.
The reason for the sackcloth is the homage to the town that dreaded sundown, which actually happened in Texarkana, not too far from where I live, and not too far from Boggy Creek territory.
To address your continuity issue, it is only speculated by Jenny that Jason saw his mother killed. It is possible he has been ferrel in the woods, and never saw his mother until that moment.
But, as we discover in later sequels, there might be a supernatural element at work(in the New Line movies, especially) but in the 3rd movie, we get a final jump scare that supports a supernatural connection. Different writers throughout the franchises always mean continuity issues...every horror franchise. So final jump scares in these movies that give a dual ending? You can blame that on Brian De Palma's Carrie, and to lesser extent some extent, Psycho, who's director , Hitchcock, inspired De Palma who also repeated the effect in his own murder slasher Dressed to Kill. But the end of Friday the 13th pt 2 is not a dream sequence. From the time I first saw it as a boy, I figured Paul rushed out to save Jenny and managed to fight off Jason, probably about the time the other counselors are returning, and who go call the police. Paul might actually be perfectly fine, or already in another ambulance on its way to the hospital. Leaving the movie open with some mystery was an invitation, by this point, for another sequel. Amy Steele was invited back to play Jenny, but she declined to return because her career was really taking off by the time casting for pt 3 began.

13:57 the way I always saw it was that Jason drowned at around 12 a year later on his birthday June 13th his mother killed those counselors making Jason 13 and in the second movie I believe they say this town has been peaceful for 5 years why are they opening up the camp again or something along those lines meaning the second movie would have took place 5 years after the original movie and Jason would be 18 so he would technically be fully grown by the time that movie happens and he would’ve seen his mother decapitated at 13 then 5 years later after growing big and strong he kills the original final girl then hears the camp is reopening and slaughters them to keep it closed

Ginny is one of my favorite final girls just behind Nancy Thompson and Kyle (Child's Play 2). This sequel is just so much fun for me and it always has been. My favorite kill is also the Machete in the face of the poor wheel chair dude. I know its probably wrong. it is so cruel and brutal but damn, it is a good one. I hate that cheap ass ending as well. they should have just left it where Jason breaks through the window, but no they screwed it up. As usual great review Cody! ✌

Your not alone Cody as I didn't care for the sack head Jason either. Pamela Voorhees was more intimidating in the first movie compared to Jason in this film. However, like you had mentioned this film has better characters, better kills, and a better final girl. Despite their flaws I still enjoy both movies. I find it very difficult deciding which is better between Part 2 and the first Friday but I think I would have to give it to the original yet.

With all of the continuity errors that this film set up, whenever they make another one (which'll probably be a soft reboot linking back in some way to the original franchise) a way that they could 'fix' the continuity errors is if they just treated those earlier films as campfire stories, like they have the scene where someone tells the story of Jason and there's no proof to the story or any murders happening in the area, or they even say that "Some say he was the killer, others say it was his mother, some say he lived in the woods, some say he never drowned." and the people they're talking to just pick apart the logic of the story, because hey campfire stories usually aren't realistic so it could work.

  • @JackalGoldKick

Good review. I thought it was a good sequel much better than part 1. This had Better characters, better pacing somewhat, Better final girl who was smart and tried to survive I really liked her. I do agree with you tho this Jason Verison is meh and silly especially the scene where he's backing up from the final girl who has a chainsaw I found it silly and laughable. The sack head isn't horrible but I'd rather have the hockey mask. Jason seemed too skinny as well and wasn't really intimidating either. The intro was a bit too long bad pacing they dint need to show so much flashbacks from part 1 and Alice's PTSD there was too much should have had alot cut. The ending was really lame I hated it it dint make sense and you don't even know what happened to the dog and Paul so stupid it kinda holds the film back from being really good somewhat.

  • @aaronhuisinga2531
    @aaronhuisinga2531 5 лет назад +1

During the campfire scene it's stated that it has been 5 years since Pamela was beheaded and I'm pretty sure there is something at the beginning that lest us know that Alice's slaughter takes place a year after. I've always looked at this Jason as being in his late teens or early twenties and that's why he's smaller.

  • @salwashabazz7329

I disagree about Ginny. I’ve always felt she was overrated as being the best “final girl”. She didn’t do anything but run around the camp hiding in different places; she had chances to finish Jason off but she kept knocking him out instead...not until Paul came to her rescue when she was pretending to be Mrs. Voorhees, did she finally “kill” him. I’m not saying she’s the worst but overall she’s not this rough and tough final girl who gave Jason a run for his money, imo 😊

I like Friday the 13th Part 2. I think it's one of the best in the series. The kills are great, the characters are better, and I like the sack-head Jason look. As much as I strongly dislike the reboot, I'm glad that the sack-head Jason is included for part of that movie. The shrine Jason made for his mother is still one of the creepiest things in the series. As far as Ginny as the Final Girl, I think she's one of, if not the best Final Girl of the Friday the 13th series. My favorite Final Girls are Nancy Thompson, Sidney Prescott, Laurie Strode, and Jamie Lloyd. Ginny's probably Number 6 or 7. I also like Kristen Parker and Alice Johnson.

Following the release of Friday the 13th (1980), Adrienne King had numerous encounters with an obsessive fan. The situation escalated into a stalker case, and she decided to avoid any further acting opportunities. She has not done any on-screen film work since, but has done voice over work on several films more than 15 years later.
According to co-producer Dennis Stuart Murphy, the idea to have Jason wear a burlap sack over his head in Part 2 came from their costume designer, who figured it was the type of readily available item Jason could have conceivably and easily procured.
In the scene when Jason crashes into the window and grabs Ginny, the actor, Warrington Gillette was actually hurt. He tried to break into the window, only it didn't break, and he ended up banging his head really hard on the glass.
A shot of the infamous double-impalement was cut to avoid an "X" rating, yet a gory still photo of this censored shot appears on the back of the videocassette box. The footage of the censored portion was finally recovered in 2020 from an old VHS of the gore shots that Carl Fullerton kept for his portfolio and was included on the Scream Factory deluxe collection of the films.
The plot of part 2 shocked most people associated with the original film. Betsy Palmer, Tom Savini and Sean Cunningham all have made public remarks about how stupid it was that Jason was alive the whole time, and if he was then why didn't he just tell his mother that he was alive which would have avoided all the murders in part 1.
Jason in this film is dressed to look exactly the same as the hooded, burlap sack killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976). The only difference is that the burlap sack he wears has only one eye hole, and his shirt has a slightly different plaid design.
With Tom Savini unavailable, they turned to Stan Winston to deliver the gore for Part 2. Unfortunately, Winston was forced to leave due to scheduling conflicts, making way for Carl Fullerton. Within 5 years, Winston won an Oscar for his work on James Cameron's Aliens, and his Stan Winston Studios would go on to be responsible for the design work on The Terminator, Alien, Jurassic Park, and Predator series. After a decade in gore, Fullerton ascended to the A-List of Hollywood make-up artists with Glory, The Godfather Part III, Silence of the Lambs, and Philadelphia.
Jason's original name was Josh, but screenwriter Victor Miller decided that wasn't scary enough, so they changed it to Jason.
48 seconds were cut by the MPAA to avoid an X rating.
Actress Adrienne King (who played Alice) explained how her death (the ice pick scene) was filmed on Facebook: "It was a "retractable" ice pick that was not tested before use...the first time the ice pick did NOT retract. Second take..the lazy propsman (not Jason) had to aim for the hole in my face!”
Lauren-Marie Taylor had a legitimate crush on her on-screen boyfriend, Tom McBride, but was unaware at the time that he was gay.
The main poster depicts Jason holding a bloody hatchet except he never uses one to kill any of his victims in this, however he does plant one in Jeff and Sandra's bed when Paul and Ginny discover it.
To this day, it is still unknown whether it was Ginny or the rat who urinated under the bed, but Amy Steel revealed in an interview that the "pee" was actually Coca-Cola
Mark's football shirt has the number "81" on it, the year of this film's release.
Terry's dog Muffin is a Shih Tzu.
    Lauren-Marie Taylor's first film role
During the climactic fight between Jason and Ginny, Jason raises the mattock to block Ginny's machete swing. Amy Steel said that during the first take, the timing was wrong and she accidentally hit Steve Dash's finger, causing him to have to go to the emergency room. Steve Dash has photos of him being treated in the ER in full costume, fake machete still stuck through his shoulder. After his finger was stitched up, he returned to set that night and insisted they complete the scene. She said they simply put a rubber cot on his finger, and applied make-up to make it look dirty.
According to Adrienne King, there was no script for her scene which is why she didn't know her character died. She showed up to set, found out Jason was going to kill her, and that they needed her to completely improvise a phone conversation. So, everything with Alice talking to her mom on the phone about struggling to move on with her soon-to-end life was unscripted.
Throughout the final scene, the mummified head of Mrs. Voorhees is noticeably an actress wearing makeup rather than a fake head. The final shot is a close-up of the head, ending in a freeze frame before the credits roll. Originally this shot ended with Mrs. Voorhees opening her eyes and smiling, but at the last minute Steve Miner decided this effect was hokey and cheapened the movie's impact.
During filming of the first take of her death scene, Adrienne King was injured when the prop ice pick failed to retract as it was pushed into her temple.
Alice and Crazy Ralph, the only two surviving characters from Friday the 13th (1980), who are eventually killed off by Jason, are not mentioned by name at all throughout this sequel.
Almost every Friday the 13th movie has a prankster, or a comic relief character. In Friday the 13th part 2, it's Ted, played by Stu Charno. In the middle of part 2, Ted tells Ginny and Paul he's going into town to get some beers. Ironically, this characters wind up avoiding the slaughter by not missing the last call. Because he stays in town all night long, chasing Beers and girls, he is able to avoid Jason. Ted is only one of the characters who survives the carnage simply by going off and partying for the rest of the movie. In every other Friday the 13th, the characters that are introduced are all killed off except for the final girl (and sometimes there's a final girl and a final guy). Ted is not the final guy or girl, he's just goes off and parties, and oddly for a slasher movie, this saves him.
Scott is the first victim of Jason to be killed with his signature machete.
In the scene where Terry is swimming at night, the first notes of the iconic Jaws-Theme are played and implemented in the score. It's a nod to the famous Spielberg movie.
According to director Steve Miner, the ending where Jason attacks Ginny through the window is not a dream, which also gives us a mystery as to what happened to Muffin.
Both this film and Halloween II (1981) feature their villains killing a law-enforcement officer with a hammer to the head (although Mr. Garrett in Halloween II is a security guard, not a police officer or sheriff's deputy). Both movies were also released in 1981. This film, in May, and Halloween II in October.
