I’m telling you guys, the Nikon D5100 is an excellent camera! I recommend using prime lenses! The glass I’m using is the Nikkor 35mm, 50mm and 85mm all f1.8G lenses. I love it just as much as my D610 and my D750! The video quality will be better with these later DSLRs but you can get photos just as good with the D5100 if you know what your doing!

I've owned the D5100 for over a decade when I bought it at Costco; it included an 18-55 and 55-300 kit lenses. It's my first DSLR but learned to enjoy using this for night photos of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, and taking photos of big events at my job. I later on invested in bigger memory cards, SB-700 speedlight, and more recently, used 35mm and 18-200 lenses. Still works like it did on day one.

I got my D5100 10 years ago for photography, and today it's what I use for all my videos on my channel. It's not the highest quality video, but it's pretty good. I don't usually let it autofocus in video mode since it doesn't work as reliably as I'd like. I'm just getting back into nature photography now and I'm wanting to see what an upgrade would get me.

I (as I always do!) researched myself dizzy before giving my money into purchasing the best kit for my purposes (and value for money). The D5100 at the time ticked my desires and soon after the Nkon/Nikkar prime & zoom lenes came for more flexible shooting options. Years later, and I'm still searching for reason to justify upgrading - delivering top quality photo memories, ease of use ad comfort are main reasons. I came across your review whilst researching and agree with your findings, so for now my D5100 remains as I still cannot let this one go!

    I’ve owned my d5100 since 2011.
2 years ago I used to shoot pictures for a website I was building for myself. Last week I hired a photographer who said his camera was “miles above mine” yet he showed up and took absolute crap pictures.
A $2k camera isn’t going to give you better pictures if you don’t do what the client wants.
Needless to say I ended up redoing all my shots 2 years later and I love the way they came out.
I love long deep exposures and the lightening I can achieve is awesome. I also only edit my photos in the nef processor and I was more then happy.
Is it still a viable camera for most amateur photographers?? Absolutely.
    Love my Nikon

I have some amazing animal photos taken with the D5100. I acquired the D3300 about a year after it was released, around the time the D5500 came out. I chose the D3300 over the D5500, a decision I now think might have been a mistake, as I never really used it. A lot was happening in my life at that point, so the camera was just set aside. Now, I'm planning to start using it again, and I might get my D5100 back. I sold it to my mom, but she doesn't use it since she prefers video cameras more when on vacation. So, I'll take it back, and now I'll have two cameras. I like the D5100 and still think it's an amazing camera today, especially if you know how to use it.

From my recollection, the differences between the models aren't that significant. In fact, I even think the D5100 might be better in certain aspects, despite having a lower megapixel count. Here are some features where the D5100 excels:
      1. Flip-out Screen: The D5100 has a flip-out screen, which is highly beneficial for versatile shooting angles and is especially useful in vlogging or situations where you need to see yourself while shooting.
      2. Wider Dynamic Range : With a 6.25% wider dynamic range (13.6 Evs vs 12.8 Evs), the D5100 can capture a greater span of shadows and highlights, which is crucial for high-contrast scenes.
      3. Timelapse Function: The D5100's built-in timelapse function is great for creating time-lapse videos without needing additional software or external intervalometers.
      4. Built-in HDR Mode: This feature allows the camera to capture images with a higher dynamic range right out of the camera, combining multiple exposures into one HDR image.
      5. Higher Pixel Density: At 471 ppi versus 333.2 ppi, the D5100 offers a higher pixel density, which can result in sharper images and better detail when viewing photos at a close range or when cropping.
As for the D3300, I haven't really used it enough to determine if it's superior, even though I acquired it a year after its release. Each camera has its strengths, and the best choice often depends on the specific needs and preferences of the photographer.

The D5100 is great. 5 years in my possession, 3 years of use (stopped for personal reasons) and I still love it, to the point I'm thinking about buying another DSLR, but keep my D5100 just for fun.
It's great for beginners, and usable in many situations. The negative point for me is the ISO management. I tend to dislike taking pictures when it's night time because of this ( even with a good lense, there's too much noise).

@@keeganpetersen3618 Hey Kegan. So I’m using two of these connected to an HDMI (Input)-USB adapter each I bought at Amazon. (No brand). To keep them on I’m powering them with an AC/DC battery each, connected to the wall socket. And to prevent them from locking down after some time, I had to kinda “jailbreak” them with a 3rd party software you can find online (the name I really can’t recall). Be mindful of two things: you CAN turn off most of the overlay information off so it doesn’t get in the way. But you CAN’T hide the face tracker (as far as I have found). So you’ll have to snug it away to a corner and find something clever to cover it up. And also be aware that the signal you’re sending to the PC (I use OBS) is actually more like a 4:3 where you can see the full display as it comes out of the camera. So you need to crop it just so the essential frame you need will be visible. This really isn’t a cheap plug, but feel free to visit my channel, on the Live section and watch the live stream I did this weekend using all these methods. Both my shot and my guest’s is being filmed with a Nikon D5100. Hope this helps!

Simple answer as a D5100 user for 5 years:
Its one of the best DSLR cameras I’ve used and has an amazing color sensor and works KIND OF well in low light situations. Ive shot through all sorts of weather conditions (rain, snow, thunderstorm, cloudy, sunny) and most of the photos have came out great. However, its really really heavy with the wrong lens and doesn’t work well with Tamron lenses (especially with 70-300). I’m switching to an A7ii and the 5100 will forever be my first baby.

Thank you for posting these videos. It's much appreciated.
Just wondering did you ever find the colours in the photos were bland or washed out? I can recover it using de haze in Rawtherapee and increasing the saturation, but surprised at how flat and bland they appear, not sure if its normal for that camera? The d3000 with the same lense doesn't have the same issue, but I think it's a different sensor?

Pro photographer and owned the D5100 since 2013. It's great. When I go shooting on a day trip for fun. I leave my other expensive Nikon's and simply grab this and go! Even with the 18-55mm kit lens... Yeah!
People see my portfolio and the photos taken on this camera get just as many nice comments as my other cameras. Actually I have two D5100 cameras so my wife can use the other one. She just puts it in auto mode (green) and fires away.
Tip: Take one photo with flash on, the next one hold flash down with your finger. This dramatically increases your odds of getting at least one shot right.
And also like others say, try some prime lenses like a 35mm. f/1.8 or the 50mm. f/1.8 etc.
Don't think you have a poor quality camera, the D5100 is awesome 😎
Practice composition and lighting. Take as many pictures as you can!

Im an owner of this beast. I started with this (in the digital world), using old lenses made in 1970's with nikon f adapters. I cant use autofocus or even light metering, so i do everything by eye. I am currently saving up for a new lens (new for me, used by definition), so i can use most features of the camera, like bracketing, light metering, autofocus, etc. The one i had before was a canon n30 slr with 35mm, 400 iso film.

I got one 11 years ago when I got interested in photography but haven’t used it in 6 years because phone cameras got so good and it was too bulky for my travel.
Now that I’m no longer a student I’m considering whether I should start using it again and get my dream lenses from back then (10-24 & 80-400) for relatively cheap now.
I was wondering whether it makes sense to spend that much on an old budget camera.

I have been shooting with a Nikon D5100 for over a year. When I first started using my camera I really struggled with shooting in low light. My low light images were always incredibly dark and super noisy because I never shot above ISO 800. The so called experts screamed never use ISO above 800 or you'll get all kinds of noise. It took a while to figure out that cleaning up noise from a high ISO is a lot easier in Lightroom than fixing low light pictures that are too dark. Now I shoot using auto ISO ranging from ISO 100 to ISO 6400. My images look good even in extreme darkness. I almost forgot to mention that I always shoot low light photos with a 35mm F1.8 prime lens set at f1.8 to f2.8 depending on how dark it is.

    • @BoostLeekdMedia

    • @BoostLeekdMedia
      @BoostLeekdMedia  10 месяцев назад +1

It could be certain settings. The colors from the d5100 and D3000 are 'different' since the D3000 has the CCD sensor and the D5100 has a CMOS sensor. It's possible the previous owners could have changed the Picture Control Settings.

    • @batuhancokmar7330

Its because D3000 captures 11 stops of dynamic range, D5100 capture 13,6 stops (both dxomark data) and has better (23.5 vs 22.3 bits) color depth. This means D5100 captures additional tones, whiter than D3000's pure white, blacks darker than D3000's pure black and its more sensitive to tonal variations. To "represent" all of these new tones in RAW, purest black and purest white of d5100 shifts mid tones more towards the center of the histogram, and as such it "looks" washed. Kind of like HDR image on non-HDR display. My D800 with 14.4 stops dynamic range has RAWs are even more "washed" than my D5100, there is just no way around it.
If picture controls set to "normal" picture profile with no D-lighting, this means camera applies no color alterations when creating JPGs. Result is D3000 would look more saturated and D5100 would look worse. Solution is simple, play with picture profiles, select something more vibrant, and use D-Lighting so that camera will properly use that extra dynamic range for highlight/shadow recovery and not for reducing the saturation of the image.

I'd recommend the Sigma 18-35 F/1.8. Excellent for portraits and for landscape. The only downside with that lens is the size and weight of the lens.

I've had my Nikon D5100 for several years and it's never disappointed me. It takes great photos. I just ordered a nikon dx 35mm lens & a smart flash. Would like to know what is a good micro-lens for the D5100 for photos of tiny critters? Thanks for your video

Thanks for sharing! I haven't used it yet but I have heard great things about the 85 F/3.5 Micro and the Nikon 40mm 2.8 Micro

@@BoostLeekdMedia Thanks for the tip! I use to be very active in photography during my stint in the Army & Air Force. I volunteered it for an extra duty! Then, I retired and got into learning & playing music. Photography was a great love affair tho.
