Excellent! This is my kind of video, no mindless babble, good camera angles, everything in focus. Kudos.
What is the foam pad with ridges on the sill plate?
@@Drdavthomp It is called sill seal. If it doesn't seal stuff, I don't know what it does.
Anyway...
It comes in a roll, and it's cheap.
@@Drdavthomp It also acts as a capillary break to further prevent moisture from entering the pressure treated mud plate. Every little bit helps.
agreed
Absolutely magnificent video
appreciate the quick cuts and straight-to-the-point nature of this video, THIS is how you make a useful video on youtube
Wow, I need to do a few sections in my basement!! This video made me go from depressed (thinking about the cost) to deliriously happy that this is something I can do!!
How’d it go?
one of the best videos I've seen for foundation sill plate replacement. thanks for posting video.
This is the very best video f this genre on RUclips! Bravo!
I've scoured blogs and vids on this for weeks and this is still one of the best deals on this whole process!! I've watched several times!!
I am looking at a similar dilemma. In this case, the front band of the house is termite ridden and needs replacement. The catch is it's behind the concrete front porch and will have to be replaced from the basement side. Anyhoo, love your video. The music is perfect as we run into crazy stuff all the time!
Love it, quick video and shows exactly what needs to be done. Thanks for the video
Mate seeing the state of that sill plate and the actual process of replacing gives me so much relief hahah
Thought mine was bad😂
I'll tell y'all this: it's way, way easier when you have space to walk underneath as opposed to miserably have to work on a crawl space....
You ain't lyin'
Preach it brother.
Two and a half feet for me - no way - gonna attack it from above hun in the sun style...
That's why I'm here. Not lookin forward to that jot at all...
Awesome! Totally Awesome! All right CNG! Perfect video. Thank you for all the closeups and angles and clarity in less than 3'. Now with this perhaps it will take me less than 3 weeks. And the whole time that great music will be playing in my head....
Excellent video. We got the jist and got it quickly without a lot of yacking! Thank you!
This was beautiful. So straight forward!
you make it look so fun. can't wait to do mine.
Excellent, explained the process they will be doing to my house perfectly. Thank you
Nice job! I'm no expert but I do know you did it the right way such as the slots on the joists and the moisture barrier. I wish this video was longer I am going to tackle something very similar. Good Luck!
So was the moisture barrier+construction grade lumber an effective substitute vs. pressure treated lumber?
thank you, its like you were in my crawl space. found a drain leak in a cast iron elbow, fixed the drain and noticed all that in your video plus wood rot in the wall framing behind the kitchen cabinets from the sink down.
Classical music over the swears. 😄
I agree. This about my speed , show in fast mode bonus classic music. good job.
I had to put it in .25 speed. I guess my mind is slow. I need details. hah
That music makes it sound alot easier than it really is..good job
If you don't want to jack up the house, you could also replace the sill plate in between the beams (by cutting out the rotted sill plate in between the beams). Then secure the new piece of sill plate to the concrete. Then attach a new beam to the healthy part of the old beam and rest it on the new sill plate.
How do you secure new sill plate to foundation? My hammerdrill won't fit in there to drill new holes.
@@andrewrossnagel9433 If you can't drill down vertically, you can use a steel plate (like a Simpson Strong Tie) to secure the sill plate to the foundation horizontally. That's what the earthquake retrofit contractors did to my house in some spots.
@@chrisa6965 Yeah I considered those but my basment is pretty big so it would cost a lot of money. Seems silly to spend $200 on PT wood and $1000 on plates lol. I am doing total renovation so I am considering drilling through the bottom plate on exterior walls with a long bit. I can probably hit a thunder stud in with a piece of rebar/threaded rod from where I drilled.
Gosh, this video is old but its exactly what I needed to see. Geez, why can't I have a man with such skills. Lol I have a sloping floor on 2nd level and on the same wall of chimney and its driving me nuts. I'm becoming scared yearly believing its a severe structural issue. I had new roof installed and chimney repaired years ago to ensure that no water issues entered my walls but this had no impact on the sloping floor. If ANYONE can send me a link, how to repair this issue or a minimum, how to create a temporary wall below so that above can be opened to view, I would be soooooooo grateful. Thank you. Maria
This is sooooo much work. Lot’s of caffeine and rock music is needed to make this happen.
Doing the same thing at the cottage, be thankful you can stand while doing your project.
You should have supported the floor joists before cutting away and rotten sill plates. Less moving upstairs means less cracks in finished walls.
Do more man!!...I like the time lapses!!
Love the Bugs Bunny melody soundtrack! Aside from that, good camera angles and clear shots.
Phenomenal video bro!
Yes. He stalks the sill gasket to sill plate.
Does the new sill plate need to be secured to the foundation?
Once you slid in the new sill plate, how did you attach it to the foundation?
This is what I am looking for, we have that same problem. Doesn't look like he fastened the house down to anything. ?
@@cmnr8487 well, it looked like he had crumbly bricks for a foundation wall. Not easy to anchor to that. If it were concrete he could drill in and epoxy some anchors, but for it to hold like it should, you’d have to strip your siding so you could nail your exterior plywood sheeting to the sill plate so it ties into the structure.
Many times saving an old house is like this “it’s lasted 80 years this way. Let’s fix these main issues and it’ll function like it has for another 80.”
Better sometimes is Good’s worst enemy. Where do you stop?
Excellent video, I have done some work in a crawl space and it is very time consuming and I was not filming.
Well done and great editing!
Wow great video. Debating on some of this work myself.
Thanks for this college course !
I hope some contractors in my area can learn from this. Note he did't notch the beams connecting to the replaced sill plate. In fact I have seen recently many who replace the sub-floors and joists don't even replace the sill plate ?
a lot of work very helpful
I am replacing mine wondering how to anchor the sil in such tight space
This was great! Now, do a rotted rim joist running parallel to the floor joist, pretty please lol
Michael Busby, saw your comment & have to ask, did you find any video/illustration of how to replace rotted sill plate where the floor joists run parallel?
Needing to do the same in one section of house for about a 12’ run.
Are you supposed to lag bolt the sill pate to the foundation or do you simply just throw it in and then let the weight of the house hold it in place?
Weight of the house is more than sufficient.
In Australia the code states you need lag bolts
Enjoyed the Video, the music was a perfect match for the fast forwarding! Any vids on older 1940's wood frame built on piers with NO rim joist replacing the sill. Would have liked to see how you braced the outside wall if at all. There was a couple great vids a some yrs back but can't find them now. :-(
Awesome
this is a great video format ive got to look and see if you have made more like this, i hope you have...
Great video!
Exactly what I was looking for
wow, termite damage and water damage to untreated wood? On the sill plate why cant we use pressure treated, never understood it
Nice. You can also glue the sisters for added strength.
Awesome thanks man for the video. Trying buy a home in tn with a rotten seal plate. Its in a crawl space and on a brick home just wondering how bad this will be.
It’s rotten for a reason may have termite and mold and bad physics inside the crawl space that need correction. Consult with someone who knows like a crawl space company if you can. I changed a sill in my garage and made the opposite of his video like long and with commentary: ruclips.net/video/D1IzlzSbZmo/видео.htmlsi=gQVQgEodBqlAGjSq
@claireh.7605 good deal thanks buddy
I believe my sister's house has some rotten sill plates, none of the contractors she has called have called her back. I guess they are not interested in this fun and easy job.
We can't find anyone to do anything around here, too lazy I guess.
I liked your video you got anymore of them
Excelent job and video. ¡Gracias por compartir!
I’m having the hardest time finding someone to fix my issue.
Music is so good 😂
I am trying to figure out your process for jacking and supporting the joists. How did you go about that?
Fantastic
nice video...did you bolt the plate to the foundation?
did you get a reply about this?
Great video on all levels. Can I hire you for my home here in Mass. to do same project?
Love it! Are those 2x4's along with 1x6's for shoring it up?
Thank you! What about replacing the sill plate on the sides of the house parallel to the floor joists? Do you have video of that?
Im on the same boat
Lag or use structural screws to secure a 2x or LVL across the wall studs / lift the weight off and make repairs.
how long for this job ? and how much ?
Thanks! Awesome video that this Chick needed to replace sill plate and sister joists under rotting door and subfloor.
I have to replace all the floor trusses and plate on a crawl space foundation.
Any tips on how to support the whole house and tear the whole floor out to start from scratch.
The house is salvageable they just never put vapor barrier down and had neglected moisture control from gutters, fireplace, etc.
How did you attach new sill plate to the foundation? I have to do this and want to avoid spent $800 on steel plates.
Those notches for electrical on the sister joists are not up to code. you would unfortunately need to pull the electrical and re-run romex via drilled holes in your new sister joist. Also I think code requires holes must be 2 inch above edges of joist. Also, while pulling wire you'd want to double check that those runs are on the first 3rd of the joist as also a code requirement and many old homes have the runs right smack in the middle of the joist. More work yes, but it's the correct way...
How much would a contractor charge for something similar?
Looking good. Watch out for those sparks, dry rotten wood catches fire easy. Unless your out for insurance 💰
How do I do this if the sill runs parallel with the joists ?? Where is the point load ?
Excellent video, how can i get more help for exactly the same work??
what is the cost of this repair for a 100 Sq ft...floor
Hi, may i ask where are you located and contact info? Want to get in touch for an estimate. Thanks!
great video no mindless babble - true, but mindless music. Good thing there was a volume.
Was the wood treated Was the wood damaged from termites or water and if you had spray-painted it wouldn't it have last longer
you made that look easy, please come do my house
How do you do this with ut a basement and stucco exterior..same I guess
Dust mask?
Excellent job.
10 out of ten
Where can l find a good contractor like you
Now how awesome is that?
How would you cut if the rim joist end is rotted and sub-floor left above
Oscillating multi tool / saw.
how long did this project take you to do? love the video
That's amazing!
The music was inspired.
How much does something like this cost?
Turd mites?
That was great!
Looks fucking fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job
Excellent!
GREAT JOB!!!
Did you have to seal the damaged floor joists before sistering them?
I was going to ask the same thing. And why hell is the new sill plate not pressure treated?
@@masonderuelle3866 that was pressure treated. its probably ACQ and not CCA treated. don't know the difference? then look it up.
Knotching the joist in that manner for the wires reduced its structural capability to about a 2x6.
nope
You are allowed to cut 1/3 of width
How did you get the sill plate off? Mine are notch on the end.
He cut the sill plate in between the joists with a reciprocating saw then pulled the pieces out and cut off the nails with an angle grinder.
So satisfying
Cost?
just great, thanks
Thumbs up!!!
No tarpaper under the wood
How much would this cost to do ?
Depends. If you’ve got all the tools then you’ll just need some lumber and miscellaneous things. If you’re gonna pay someone to do this. Probably between $3,000-$8,000 depending on the size of the house and complexity of the job.
Damp proof membrane under new sill?
