This is the same construction and problem as my house, Australia. Not easy information to find, thank you, bless you. I feel much better about the task now.

Thanks for the video. I need to change mine out but wasn't sure about how to support the joists while changing out. I was nervous the wall would slide down.

good video! How do you support studs temporarily while you remove and replace the sill? I'm facing a similar situation in my house.

Was the original plate/rim/or whatyacallit redwood? or just regular fir?? I don't recall running into a bad one like that unless redwood or treated was not used. In the old days redwood was standard.=,,..but I believe the cost of redwood has surpassed the cost of treated.

How does the wall stay up if you are only supporting the floor joists?

    • @phillipaearls292

The wall is supported with the sill on the outside of house.the sills are supported with piers that are either made of bricks or cinder blocks. The joists support the floor

Geralyn Fielding we just bought a farmhouse with the exact same issue of a rotting sill beam with wall studs right on top of it, no bottom plate. In this video, I can see the wall studs not touching anything while they are replacing the beam. I can see they are supporting the floor joist, but I don't see how they are holding the wall up. I really want to know 'cause we have to replace our sill beam.

My old house has the same old design. I was able to replace the sill by supporting only the joists one six foot span at a time. First though i screwed my studs into the floor joists and then screwed a 2x6 across the studs and joist. Any weight from the 2x4 studs is transferred to the 2x6 and then the joists. My joists were supported by a stack of wood blocks and shimmed eat every joist in the respective 6 foot span and as close to the girder as possible, which in my case was two feet. I don't know if this is right but that is what i came up with and it worked for me. Can you beleive my GIRDERS were only 2x6? This block and base house is made so cheap and probably was designed to last only 30 years. Now it's 70.

Wall studs a connected not only to a top plate but also all the exterior shearing etc.
It's these connections that stop the wall studs from falling or entire wall from sagging during a timely cill repair.
This video is a good overview of this task done correctly.

@The Looking Glass Darkly I was worried about the same thing cause I have to do mine also. You should be OK. I think if you're really worried just take out 8ft sections one at a time.

Didn't show the best part - fitting it in perfectly in one take.

How would you do this on a balloon frame house? A plate on the inside of the studs and support the new temporary plate with jacks?

      @strokerace4765 2 года назад

Never use jacks as supports!!! Jacks are to raise not to support!

What would a rough quote of replacing that sill be? I live up in northeast Louisiana and if I posted a picture of my house it would look just like what is in your video. Almost the same length of damage and all.

We charge 100.00 per foot of sill to fix

Thanks for the quick reply Richard, you don't have any buddies you know in northeast louisiana that do this line of work by chance?

    • @phillipaearls292

It depends on the footage of the sill but about $100.00 a square foot.

In Southeast Ohio that would be $700 labor.
