I’m not a contractor but I did take physics in high school and it seemed VERY risky to put the jacks under those posts without a horizontal piece of wood on top of the jack to spread the point of contact 😮Very satisfying to see this fix. As the owner of a 80+ year old gem house, I love to see others saving these older homes. So worth it!
Love the job from start to finish. I really appreciate the “realness” of it; from the on-the-spot-decisions to the practical choices made through talking it out. I’ve said it before on your channel, I wish you lived next door to me. 👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah man! You are having a blast with the channel and it's been a great time being subbed ... hope the 2023 summer has been superb for you and the family and 44Ok subs is looking good. CHEERS
This is a great video. Yay Mike for your help! You lads did a fantastic job! Like how you talk out the game plans and changes. The humorous touches were a fun addition 😂 Thanks!
Can you bolt the other Jacks to the foundation as well! I am so happy you are getting to this project, this whole basement entrance has been my favorite part or your house, not sure why! Looks Great!
I was following along as you built it trying to figure out what your next step was going to be. Pretty interesting, kinda like legos. Only thing that might be an issue is you didn't countersink those expansion bolts. Otherwise looks solid to me. I can't believe they didn't pour the bulkhead against the foundation wall. Interesting how things were made in the past.
Mike you know Matt's not right ! That's just one of the reasons we like him. Now I'm sorry but " everybody wants to be like mike " . I really liked the post and I learn something 98% of the time. THANKS
Appreciate your video... had a house fire july 25th and have to replace... a lot. I probably will hire a contractor, but i wanted to see sort of what I'm getting into replacing floor joists and the plate between the joists and concrete... wish I could do it myself, just a bit worried its too big a job.
Hi matt i sure enjoy watching ur videos i'm learning along the way i do have my basic construction certificate and i've learned so much from ur videos i support you all the way im from Alberta canada keep up the great work we all love you great job matt your a huge inspiration to all of us
Steel is the best way but also the most expensive and would last until the Second Coming or The Sox Beating The Rays in the ALCS!!! Sorry had to do it!!! Lol!! Great Videos Thank You 🙏
You building a tunnel into a mine? (or a portal to another dimension?) That's some solid framing! I'm impressed. You planning on insulating the doors against the winter cold seeping into the basement?
Did the door upstairs open? The crack on the cinder block got smaller, but did not go away. I'm getting ready to do a sill replacement and your video gave me a lot to think about. Thank you!
you have such a wonderful attitude lol, it's so much fun to watch. also the mineshaft part was accurate, in that first shot of the door i honestly for a second was like "what sorta secret underground bunker does he have".
Just wondering if you've thought about adding borate sticks (aka cobra rods) around the older areas as a protective/preventative measure against rot/chewy bugs/moisture?
Great job. The only thing I'd have done differently would have been to extend the sill beyond the door on the left side too, probably up to the first joist.
I know what you're going through with this project, I am doing window replacement and two out of three have ant damage and I still have two more to go, wish me luck.
Those Ryobi tools were working hard! How do you like them? Most reviewers say they are homeowner/diy quality. Do you use them often enough to deem them “contractor” grade?
Good job ! Did you screw the sill in the concrete ? Did you used any special treated wood for your wood sill ? I’m about to start the same kind of work so i’m looking for some tips 👍👍
I would have cut the existing sill back on either side of the door to allow the new sill to rest on the concrete. I also think it would be good to face the sill for its entire length of the repair with some overlap beyond with a pt 2x4 to provide continuity. Was the original sill place attached to the foundation by lag bolts or something else? If not, I think they sell tiedowns that can be retrofitted on the inside. An architect once said to me after my commenting that they didn't build them like they used to, 'we only see the successes, the failures are gone'.
Hey mate thanks for very informative vids Just a quick question I will change all the insulation in ceiling and wanna spray some chemicals for termite & pests infestation as the property was not maintained well and had some moisture…. Any brand you can suggest? Can’t spray termidor on attics? Any information is highly appreciated Cheers
Hey! I'm not 100% sure on this one so I don't want to give you any wrong information. I would suggest calling an exterminator to see what they recommend. Good luck!
I’m having similar work done Next week!!😮😮😮 They will have to work from a crawl space thgh. My back hallway has dropped an inch or so- I’m so freaked out😵💫😵💫😵💫
How do I replace a sill that sits parallel to the joists, holding up the wall, not the joists? What can I use to hold up the wall while removing the sill?
It is really only needed to fill in any gap between the sill plate and the foundation wall. I am going to put in some installation during the next part of the project. Good question to ask! 👍
I’m up north, and most of the house has an unfinished basement, but the other portion of the house is on dirt. The old butler’s pantry is sagging, so I took the plunge to rip the floor up and to see the joist are on the dirt. That room is going to be a bathroom, and does anyone have a suggestion. I was going to level the room out, put down gravel. Is it a bad idea to lay down plastic, since humidity and condensation, since the house needs to breathe or would you put down concrete? The plumbing will have to go near the ground in this room, trying to dig out at least 18-24”, and thinking of using rock wool on the joist. My butlers pantry, laundry room, and breezeway to the carriage house is all on dirt. It would be nice to dig it all out, since all sagging really bad, and put in supports, and a crawl space, so if we need to do further work, can access without taking all the flooring up.
@@TheFixerHomeRepair That might be difficult! Obviously I think you'd want something wider than just a traditional 80x36 door, or at least I'd think you would. But then you're going in to double-door territory, which may be too wide! Whatever you do, I think you should put some steel brackets into the block foundation wall so you can put 3 2x6s or 2x4s across the doors to keep them from being kicked in when the door is not being used!
nice work! you should remove the stairs and pour new concrete on the floor before you add stairs. our you can just pour concrete stairs, hit two birds with one stone
I'm so glad you show the outtakes. When it's nicely edited it looks so clean and easy. Kind of like watching a Disney princess meet her prince.

The "friend" I get to help with projects is a contractor that I trust completely.
😂. Good friend to have!
The work on this door...was really good....that frame is solid......great choices made.....safe for many years.....
Love the job from start to finish. I really appreciate the “realness” of it; from the on-the-spot-decisions to the practical choices made through talking it out. I’ve said it before on your channel, I wish you lived next door to me. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks! It was fun being able to film a different type of video. 😃
That house will last forever! Mike seems a real nice & competent guy. Nice job by both of you.
Nice job, I don’t think that will ever go anywhere! I can’t wait til you do the rest of the bulkhead stairs and the door.
You and Mike did an incredible job. That finished product was beautiful. Built like a tank. Awesome job as usual. Excited to see the stair rebuild.
Thanks!
Great video! Can’t wait for the stairs to be done.
I can't either! 😂 Thanks for watching.
YES! THE STABBY SCREWDRIVER IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha by popular demand!!

😁 mine too!
Studying Home Inspection and was lost on sills and stuff thank you for making this video
Love it Matt. Can't wait to see the next part. Been waiting on this since the bulkhead replacement and Porch fix video!
Thanks for the support!
This is a great video. Yay Mike for your help! You lads did a fantastic job! Like how you talk out the game plans and changes. The humorous touches were a fun addition 😂 Thanks!
😂 Thanks!
Mike looks like he could support the house himself 💪
😂
Can you bolt the other Jacks to the foundation as well! I am so happy you are getting to this project, this whole basement entrance has been my favorite part or your house, not sure why! Looks Great!

I love the Terminus map!
Thank you!!!! This is soooo incredibly helpful. I love the tips about stabbing beams and discovering damage!
As soon as I saw this video up, I immediately turned it on
Thanks for watching!
This was great to watch. I love how you keep a clean workspace AND I love how I could almost guess where you edited out the big boy words 😂
You did a great job. I love your videos. Great demonstration. This is what I have been looking for. Thank you.
Best video ever! Go Matt and Mike. Great project.
Mike you know Matt's not right ! That's just one of the reasons we like him. Now I'm sorry but " everybody wants to be like mike " . I really liked the post and I learn something 98% of the time. THANKS

😂. There probably is a bunker hidden down here that I haven't found yet.
As long as this vid once… it was very entertaining! Thanks and great job.
Great job, guys. Seems you work well together.
Is there a rule of thumb for how many T-posts to use & spacing between them?
Thanks in advance.
Lookin forward to your episode with roger Wakefield.
Glad to see ya in the basement
Good job! I love the bloopers!

Great project! ❤
I have been waiting for this one! Cannot wait to see how it all comes together.

Awesome job!!! Now I wanna see those babies!! At least we heard one of them!!! Congratulations Mommy!!
Thanks for the video; great as always. That Ryobi hammer-drill seems to be quite a beast...
The tool has always worked great for me. 😃
Good job ! Did you screw the sill in the concrete ? Did you used any special treated wood for your wood sill ? I’m about to start the same kind of work so i’m looking for some tips 👍👍
Hey! I just used pressure treated and I did not attach it to the concrete. It would probably be great to do so but it would not be easy…
Yeah, another great video, Matt. Great helper too. 👍🤩
Look solid to me, great job !
Beautiful job guys!
Really enjoy these projects! Great job!
Great work. I don't think I would have done anything different. Love your videos. Great learning for me, thanks.

I’ve been here since bulk head doors, and I am currently working on them. My sill needs replaced also.
Thanks for the continuous support!
Bringing in eye candy is a great way to make up for lack of regular content
Thanks Matt. Great work.
Thanks for watching!
Nice job. Thanks Mike
I watched the video where you replaced the stairs and I commented that you might have acted too quickly 😂
Awesome work!
Great Work
Thanks! 😁
Thank you Mike.
You're back!!! 😊😊😊😊😊
Great job, and I'm glad you asked for help when in doubt👍👍 Peace of Mind.
five in one is an epic little tool. I carry one too.
Hey mate thanks for very informative vids

Still use oil for heating?
Great work. Thank you
RUclips recommended this video 👍

Great job. How come you didnt use PT 2x4 for posts?
They did
Thanks for sharing!
That bulkhead door area looks right outta a SAW movie pretty creepy 😊
😂
great job! I don't know which area that you are working for? I really want you come to fix my house :)
great video
Are you going to keep some of the spooky vibe, or finish the basement?
I think I'm going for a mixture of both. Can't leave the spooky vibe behind!
Nice Job !!!
Nice work so far. Always enjoy your vids. I like your hat. Where can I get one?
Hey, here is the link for it! 😃 amzn.to/3QNnolq (Affiliate link).
Looks great
Thanks for watching!
Genuine question, is there a reason to not use the sil seal on the floor under the pt that you tapconned in?

😂 Will do!
Are you replacing it with a 36x80 steel exterior door by chance?
The plan is a work in progress to figure out what doors to use.
