In order to award a goal in this situation, the goalkeeper must have been replaced for an extra attacker, otherwise a minor penalty shall be assessed.
My 6th grade teacher is his older cousin, or aunt, I can’t remember. He played for Pittsburg at the time. It was cool being acquainted to someone we watched on Saturday nights
He is the most entertaining goalie ever. Yea, there have been better (only a couple), and there have been greater saves. But there has never been a better smile behind a mask that just makes your day. Us Pens fans will forever miss him in our crease.

The puck slides on the ice, so the snow works as a cushion or wall slowing the puck down. There have been cases where a goal doesn’t cross the line because it’s late in the period when on fresh ice it would have crossed the line
This reminds me of when the great innovator Roger Neilson told his goalie to leave his stick laying in the crease when pulled for extra attacker. The stick then deflected the puck wide that was heading in the net.
I remember doing something similar in minor hockey. Swiping in a semi-circle placing snow at the side of either post. At the end of periods there would be little mounds at the side of the crease, an added layer of protection against wraparounds.
As a goalie I would always put snow right on the side of each post, that way I had more time for wrap arounds and the puck would get stuck if they’re going for a slot pass. I was shocked with how many times this actually worked.
I’m shocked that so few people know about this. I played way back in the stone-age. Didn’t do it every game, but if we went up against a bunch of guys that were known for their wraparounds, I’d try to keep a buffer in place, just to give me an extra microsecond or two.
I realize most hockey fans hate the Penguins outside of Pittsburgh but watching some behind the scenes footage with Flower is always hilarious and well worth the time
