Peter Norman didn't retire from running, he was banned by the Australian Athletics Association. He actually qualified for the next Olympics, but was not allowed to compete because of his involvement in the protest. He was not left out of the statue because it was thought he did not support the black runners- his space was left vacant so other people could stand there and have their picture taken.
Peter Norman’s place is vacant so that visitors can stand in accord with Smith and Carlos. It was Norman’s choice to leave his spot vacant since the sculpture is in America, on the duo’s college campus. Per Peter, “ It wasn't about me. All I did was wear a button of support. I'm sorry, but if the picture of the kids was photoshopped, then no one is making fun of the kids, and there should be no outrage. It would only be outrageous if they had found some actually ugly kids and used them to be the butt of a mean joke. THAT would be horrible! Since that's not the case and the kids in the picture were photoshopped to be ugly, they have nothing to be embarrassed about. Certainly, no one has any right to be outraged on their behalf.
