i use +P Diddy ammo. it causes emotional and traumatic mental damage that affects the target, causes years of therapy to recover. i think its on par with hollow point
5% faster seems pretty nominal compared to 20% increased recoil. Like was said, don't want to be hit by either but if increased recoil causes slower follow-up shots, +P doesn't seem worth it. Interested to see gel test.
Let's see that 135gr +P Critical Duty vs regular 147gr HST. I'm aware one is barrier blind and the other isn't. Just would like to see a direct comparison.
I shoot both depending on use case. Excellent ammo. I use Duty for my vehicle guns; regular defense load for my house and carry guns due to overpenetration concerns. Just another consideration. But you can't go wrong with either load -- as long as your gun can handle P+. Make sure -- IMPORTANT point left out of this video, IMO.
What ever happened to the ballistic test you wanted to do with civil defense 2200fps? You had a theory it would have colateral damage with over penetration. And that it wasn’t safe.
The Hornady 135 +P load performs/scores better in the entire 40 shot 8 event FBI test series than the 135. That's not necessarily the case with other bullets. Some actually perform better (or what the FBI considers better) at standard pressure. Both may perform/score well enough, but the +P may perform better in shorter barrels; that's not always the case either. Training ammo should handle like duty ammo, but there are lots of reasons why that doesn't happen for everybody. Some PDs Q with duty ammo, some do not. Shooting Blazer Brass 124@1090 and carrying GD +P at 124@1220 may help you miss when it counts, or not. Or Blazer Brass 115@1145 and 115 +P+ GD at 115@1300. Or most range fodder v mil-spec/US NATO 115@1325. As an aside, guns sprung for NATO loads (usually 115-124@1220-1325) may not run as well with loads outside those specs. Guns matter too. For many, +P, +P+, and NATO is way easier/softer to shoot in a full size or compact gun than a sub or micro compact. How you shoot is usually more important than what you shoot.
@@bandogmerchWhere did you get that information from? Provide a trustworthy legit source to that. Actually, in law enforcement 115gr +p, 124gr, 135gr, and 147gr are popular among the many police agencies (local, state, federal). There is no such 135gr "standard" bullet weight in law enforcement.
50 fps isn’t really a whole lot more more a 25% more recoil impulse. Speed is king but remember accuracy and putting rounds on target is in my opinion the best.
Not trying to throw you under the bus, but there’s no such thing as 40 cal +p. You may have forgotten what you carrier as a cop, but you never practiced with standard and carried +p ammo in .40 S&W because there is no +p in .40, unless you had some wildcat loading, which is doubtful for a police department. +p only exists as a SAAMI spec loading for 9mm and .38 special.
Not a lot of difference. The key factor is bullet performance. Referencing Lucky Gunner's testing of the 124 HST & HST +P there was not any difference in penetration and only a few hundredth in expansion. So take you pick, my experience is about 50 fps in the two. Yes, I do prefer the +P but not a lot of real world difference.
Federal 115 grain JHPs 9BPLE +P+ has been around since 1990 and is still available today and at 25 dollars for 50 rounds is a cost efficient and pretty effective round that in my experience has been extremely reliable and dependable and at 25 dollars you can afford to shoot 50 rounds out of your carry gun to check function and reliability before trusting your or your family members life with a round you only shot 1 magazine through the gun I'd say shoot a 100 rounds of it is 50 dollars worth your life this round goes 1150-1170fps in a 3 inch barrel 1210-1240fps in a 4 inch barrel 1260+fps in a 4.5-5 barrel these kind of bullets JHPs work much better if at least traveling 1100fps or more with 9mm yes in smaller 9mm guns it has some recoil but functions flawlessly
I only put in +p ammo in stuff with a barrel longer than 10 inches. the difference is negligible an most handguns as far as performance. recoil increase is not worth it. Ironicly enough the only gun I have with a 16 inch barrel is my Sub2000. that's the exact ammo I carry in it... hornady 135gr +p ftx critical duty
Might sound silly but I shoot +P ammo mostly in my steel frame pistols because I believe they're built to endure that type of pressure compared to polymer frames. I'll shoot +P in polymer frames, but very rarely of course.
factory +P isn't what it used to be they downgraded the pressures of +P. mid range reloads are higher FPS than +P loads, going to the upper ends of SAMMI pressure loads are considerably higher FPS. the mid range charge for 9mm is almost 50fps faster than the hornady critical defence +p.
10%.power increase? The 45 cap I shot in +p Hornandy critical duty felt like shooting 10mm. Full 4 inch barrel bit more recoil but its called working out and being strong.
And by the way I honestly didn't feel much of any difference or higher recoil shooting Federal HST 124 grain +P through my Hellcat then I did most standard pressure range ammo that I practice with, and even found Federal American Eagle 124 grain ball ammo to have more snap in my Hellcat than the +P hst's
For everyday use I would say standard 9mm. We’re talking about defending yourself against two legged varmints. +P ammunition is not cost effective. Now if we were talking about hunting game I would go with a 10 mm. +P for a bigger animal like a bear. At this point the gun won’t be much of a concealed carry though. A standard self defense 9mm round is more than enough.
Question, is the better terminal ballistics from plus P worth having less rounds on target? I’m fairly new shooter, and currently I just carry federal HST. I would say I have moderate skill and I’m trying to figure out if plus P is worth the slower splits.
Gold dot +P casings smack me in the forehead when ejecting out of my 365xl. Talk about tactical distractions. Immediately switched back to standard pressure rounds.
For self defense I see a lot of heavy grain rounds then the opposite also very low grain like 90 grain ammo and 135grain like critical defense. What are the benefits of each and what recommendations do people have on carry ammo? Heavy grain or low grain like the 80-90 grain norma and underwood penetrator? Thoughts 💭

Overall benefits of +P, aren't really worth the the potential risk of carrying it as go to ammo. Yes you get better bullet velocities and "some" better barrier penetration, but at the cost of high $ per round, increased recoil, not all equipment can handle hotter +P ammo and the increased wear and tear on your piece, thus potentially increasing failure in jams, cycling in the long term?
If you’re gonna do plus P on 40 caliber or plus P plus which I know he said isn’t officially regulated why not just get a 10 mm. It’s not on me that it was issued to him, but that’s not the point.
My belief is that with additional pressure comes added recoil resulting in additional wear on the firearm. There will also be an increase in cost per box of 20 rds. Your choice as to whether these increases are worth the slight additional penetration and expansion. Be sure to fire several boxes through the firearm you will carry to check accuracy and function. Appreciate the discussion on the difference between standard and +P ammo. Looking forward to gel tests.
In a self defense situation you need shot placement with quickness, 60 fps more doesnt compesate the 30% more recoil you going to have, specially if you train regulary with fmj ammo
Totally agree, only case were I like +P is hardcast bullets for bear defense. I still carry 9mm for bears, and the extra energy is definitely worth it to maximize penetration.
Same. The bonus with the solid copper rounds is they shot softer too. Thinking about trying +p in the shield carry comp I just got. Supposedly the higher pressure actually makes the comp work even better.

If the cost is the same then I would go with +p but if +p cost more than I really don’t see enough difference to justify the extra cost.
+P is worth it in a subcompact to get the same ballistic effectiveness compared to a full size running regular.
