    One thing I’ve noticed, and been guilty of myself as well, is that people fall in line with a certain line as long as it’s giving them good results. They’ll throw 5 strikes in a row, but strike 4 hit a little high and still struck. The signs are there that the lanes are transitioning, but because they got a strike, they don’t move. So then, they get back up on that lane and go high again and leave a 4 pin when they could’ve made a small adjustment and gotten 6 in a row instead.

    This video seemed like a very simple adjustment - slow ball speed, move right a bit - but sometimes these kind of decisions don't have as predictable results as we see in your video.

    6:10 - 7:00 I think you guys used some poor phrasing in this discussion. Properly executing the shot you're trying to make should feel the sane anywhere. The results of that shot will vary depending on what center you're in, which lane you're on, the oil pattern used, and how much it has been played on to that point and with what. Previous to this discussion, Brad had a good point about not immediately adjusting based off a poorly executed shot, which is something that anyone with any appreciable experience will know instantly.

    My spare game has gotten better, but I’ve been having trouble stringing strikes, and I think part of the problem is sometimes missing my mark as well as releasing the ball inconsistently. Do I need to rotate my hand around the ball to get more hook, or is it only a matter of getting my thumb out sooner and lifting with the fingers? If I get the ball over 1st arrow or board 6 or 7, it will hook a little more (sometimes it goes high), and other times I miss right (or left and it goes almost straight at the pocket). Can’t seem to get my ball speed over 13 mph, but on the other hand, I remember something Brad said, something about slowing down the ball speed and even at 7 or 8 mph, the ball can still strike, but I have to rely on being so accurate and hitting just the right mark.

    • @donkeydiehard879
      @donkeydiehard879 Год назад +4

      I would just focus on releasing the ball the same way EVERYTIME. If you're bowling on house shot, you can score by being consistent and accurate. Ideally, you don't want to come around the ball to get more hook. You want the hook to come from clearing the thumb first. Coming around the ball will make it more "volatile." It saves energy so just "jumps" once it sees friction. Although it may look cool, it is rarely a way to repeatable success.

    • @dustyc324
      @dustyc324 Год назад +1

      by watching the ball. varying the speed. if your ball is hooking early, throw it a little faster, the oil is short. Ball not hooking til late? Roll it slower. Or move to the dry a little more. Same with moving into the oil if you're breaking too hard and coming up High. Move your shot more to the wet ( middle.)
      then you can get into changing a ball. I use one ball and make adjustments. maybe that's why I have a 180 and not a 200 average. some days my ball just isn't gonna work right on different conditions. Different ball would allow my shot and line to work better. Bowling balls aren't cheap. Too many other hobbies. One new ball a year. usually worn out by the end.

    Question. On the lanes 5-6 where the ball is hooking more and you moved your feet left......do you also move your target left into the oil? When I move left and hit the same mark, my ball goes deeper into the dry (right) and comes back even harder. Consequently I am killing the head pin. I need help with handling that transition......and that happens by the end of game one every week. Thanks.

    Good points. A note about what Brad said HE does for less speed. He said he pushes the ball on the downswing less forcefully. This means that he generally pushes the ball. And it actually shows just by watching him bowl. I think this is a bad habit because it is very hard to repeat the same amount of force. AND very hard to reduce or increase it accurately. AND it will often hurt accuracy. The best thing is to have all speed from the lower body and keep the arm loose and doing the same thing in the swing. Also, speed is hard to manage accurately. I would not mess with speed as a 1st solution. Especially when there so many balls and surfaces that can help first. Or targeting/angle adjustments. If there aren't other solutions, then yes, speed management.

    • @jah9253

I even try to leave my feet in the same spot and just adjust the line I'm looking for. Sometimes I just need to speed up a little and still hit my spot. IDK. • @bowlingxp8345

      @@dustyc324 Haha true. Well most players arent adjusting at all beyond changing where they stand and look. But i will say this : if someone can adjust speed well with consistency...it is a huge advantage. But also this : speed is kinetic energy and can offer more pin action. So i would strive for the most speed possible, and change other parameters first, in order to not lose this energy and pin action. But for 99% of players this is very hard. For example i am a low rev guy, but i still want to learn to play with plenty of speed.

    • @dustyc324

      probably not on a rec league. practice. practice. practice. when you go rent a lane for an hour, don't worry about your score. Watch the ball and see where it's going. Try something else. Try something else. Throw your spare shots like there is a full rack up there. That will help you understand what changes do what. Of course you want to practice shooting your spares, but first understanding what your ball is doing when you throw it in different spots gets you dialed in. Then you start doing that before your league in the ten min warmup. Don't worry about the spare. Find your line.

      @@scoutpack1518 Right. Adjustment is good up until it's too unnatural or just not working. Ball change can bring you closer to a normal speed and line.

    How can a person find out what and where the oil conditions are in the bowling there in

      Tenpin Toolkit app will give you access to the full oil pattern library. Most leagues change the oil pattern every quarter, just ask the lane guy/girl/center proprietor what the current pattern being used is.

    In a slump and at a crossroads of should I practice more or just try turning my brain off and throwing?

      both. My first 300 I was arguing with my gf between frames. I wasn't paying attention to bowling at all. Going up and throwing my shot, coming back and bickering with her. She pointed out I had 9 and left me alone. Good way to end an argument.

    I'm like Brad...easier for me to slow down my ball speed. Usually when I try to increase to anything over 15 mph, I lose consistency, unless I'm throwing a straight shot on a spare.
