  • In the third episode of Project XJ, we address the issue of spare tire storage when you go with a larger size tire on an XJ.
    www.quadratec.com/products/pro...
    We installed a Smittybilt XRC rear bumper with tire carrier. While we had it in the shop, we also added a Smittybilt Defender roof rack for some extra storage up top.

    That's a very nice bumper. Should I look in local scrap yards for the old roof rack?

    I love the disign of this roof rack, but to me, it looks a little short. If i mounted lights on the front and back tabs, they would both be partially blocked by the roof.
    I understand the rack comes in 3 sections, is there a way i could order a second middle section and still have it fit?

    Whats the max capacity for that roof rack.

    This was the biggest pain in the butt to install. We had to cut, grind and force to get this back bumper installed tonight. Two of us with a full shop took almost 6 hours to install. Unacceptable! I should have paid the extra money and gotten another ARB.

    • @Quadratec
      @Quadratec  9 лет назад

      ***** What did you have to cut and grind? This bumper went on our XJ pretty easily. We didn't need to cut anything.

    • @IAmWoody

      I am getting ready to head out of state to a rendezvous, but I will do a video response and show what the problems were.
      I know you guys just sell them, but I was very miffed last night and this is my first disappointment with Smittybilt.

    • @Quadratec
      @Quadratec  9 лет назад

      ***** I look forward to seeing it. Like I said it went on pretty smoothly for us, the only thing that took some extra time was getting the nutserts lined up inside the frame rails. But we didn't have to cut or grind anything, except for the old brackets on the body that hold the bumper ends on, and that was just drilling out the rivets that hold it on. What year XJ were you putting it on?

    • @IAmWoody
      @IAmWoody 9 лет назад

      ***** 1999, and it was stock before I started a year ago with the 3" lift. It has the Rough Country front bumper which went on very easily.

  • @DarkoDoctor

    Does the Smittybiit come with lower quarter panel covers? In the video you remove the end caps, but it doesn't show what you put back on? Just wondering if you used something like the JcrOffroad Non Integrated Rear Lower Quarter Panel Armor? Thanks!

    Why does the suspension in the video look so old? Did the Rubicon Express suspension rust up that quick or are the videos swapped around?

    • @Quadratec
      @Quadratec  7 лет назад +1

      There was about an 8 month gap between the suspension and this, the only thing that rusted was the leaf springs.

    is there a location on the bumper or a bracket built in for the hitch plugs and wiring?

    • @joe8388
      @joe8388 8 лет назад

      +Tom D no, and it sucks. But, when these Jeeps were originally bought by the original owners, they cheaped out and did not pay the extra money for the tow package. So most of these bumper manufacturers designed these bumpers with the hitch installed, but did not allow anywhere to mount a plug due to the fact that most people I assume didn't have the tow package.
      Also whomever engineered this bumper did not have a gas tank skid plate in mind--where installing with the skid plate makes lining the holes for the brackets up in the back almost impossible due to the added thickness of the skid plate

    Thanks. I have a couple of questions if you could relay them to the guys who installed it. does it come with the nut strips that slide into the unibody that the brackets mount onto? I saw that it was bolted on but nothing was shown going into the frame and the fact that it already had the hitch makes me wonder if they reused the hardware from that or if it comes with the strips. it looks good I think it's the one I'll go with for sure

    • @x8xballx
      @x8xballx 9 лет назад

      NVM I see the new strips laying under/behind the mounts lol

    • @Quadratec
      @Quadratec  9 лет назад

      It comes with everything you need, the nutstrips from the hitch were removed and the new ones were put in. If you click on the link in the description, or even better the link at the end of the video, there is a PDF file of the instructions included with the bumper. It's a pretty simple installation and you need a second person with you for sure. But I'm super happy with it. The one thing it doesn't come with is a license plate mount. I ended up using the Rockhard 4x4 mount part number: 12066.908 on our site.

    • @x8xballx
      @x8xballx 9 лет назад

      thanks for the info. on the license plate I saw a picture of one in the catalog that offsets the plate and a light off to the side on the hatch. I think it mounted to the old plate holes and just offset it (I'll search later) but don't remember seeing it forsale. I'm hoping it wasn't just a custom piece.

    • @Quadratec
      @Quadratec  8 лет назад

      +Eric Renew I'm very happy with this rack, still holding up great. I went with the welded one piece rack because I wanted to limit the joints where water can get inside the tubing. It made shipping a bit more, but as far as strength and rust prevention, I think it's totally worth it.

    Not to be nit picky, but it looks like @ 2:10 your brand new lift kit from December 2013 appears to have a lot of wear. What happened? Surely the new finish didn't wear off that fast right?

    • @Quadratec
      @Quadratec  9 лет назад

      We had a pretty brutal winter last year, and here in PA they salt the roads pretty aggressively, so the finish on any leaf spring takes a ton of abuse, this XJ is a daily driver as well, so it's out in the elements every day. The springs still work great, but with nearly a year of road conditions they don't look brand new.
