I purchased a groove after my starter pack, what a meat hook, kept it in the house to practice grips. Fast forward 18 months, tried a forehand, out threw all my other disc by 20 feet. I kept it in my rotation, I can throw it backhand, forehand, tailwind, headwind very consistent. It flies stable till I really lean into it, then I get some turn out of it. I did feel the need to take that sharp inner edge off with sandpaper.
I like the groove as I took some sandpaper to the microbead on the rim and after that it has become one of my favorite utility discs as it feels and flies very nice for overhand/thumber throws.
My friend and I found a groove similarly to you, sitting in the basket in the practice area of our local course, he took it and seeing that no one else was there he just took it, he tried throwing it throughout the day, and it wouldn’t stay anywhere consistent, seemed like it went where ever it went. After that he literally said “maybe this was left there for a reason” seems like everyone has had similar times with them
I scrubbed the sharp edge off of mine on the concrete teepad, and not only did it make it more comfortable, it made it fly better. Might have something to do with making the release smoother because the sharp edge wasn't grabbing my skin anymore. Now it's an excellent headwind driver. It almost always dumps in a tailwind.
It’s always amazing to me how Innova will just sometimes completely make up their flight numbers. They’ve got a few discs like this that just are utterly wrong.
That's why I stopped throwing Innova. Used to frustrate me when I lost a disc and replaced it with one that was completely different - especially Destroyers! It was a lottery every time you bought one.
I found 5 groove's in a used disc bin once, so i figured I'd take them and learn to throw them. One of the five (the lightest and most worn-in) is amazing and one of my furthest flying discs. the other four are similar to this video, REALLY stable, seems more like a 0 turn 5 glide
Ive managed to find a slot in my bag for my champion groove that I found a couple years ago (aside from using it as a roller).. Never really understood it until this year when I accidentally threw it straight down into the dirt and it skipped, flipped up to flat, and managed to go 250'.
accurate. I bought a Champion Valkyrie based on overwhelming support from local pros and Am1s, and I really don't like the plastic. Granted, I'm way more into grippier plastics like ESP or GStar, so idk what made me think Champion was a good choice
Great beginner forehand disc was the disc that made me love disc golf shifting from baseball to disc golf the over stability is very nice but once your throw becomes more acclimated for disc golf and less for other sports the better other disc like the boss and the firebird are for forehand still have one in my bag and always will can bomb when you get the line right
I have one Groove. I always thought that it is too Hard for me. I just can't throw it. But maybe it's just bad disc as you said. Although I will put it back to my bag and give it a chance.
I only use my groove for a strong back wind in a open field. I have had good results with this throw. Flies straight and doesn't bounce around like other high glide disc.
Mine is *unbelievably* overstable - it's like a banana. However! Throwing righthand forehand over a tree to a green immediately behind, I'll throw it at at least 60 degrees anhyzer and it will corkscrew in the air, falling trailing edge directly down, to land without rolling, like magic - better than throwing a rock. It'll never leave my bag just for that incredible shot. :)
Next gem to review- Innova Lynx. MTA world record holder. (Keep throwing the groove but bend the outer edge DOWN before and after each throw until it starts to track properly. Probly take a couple weeks to get it tuned.)
I have a groove that I found as well. Only use it to bail me outta the woods when I gotta go over the top and through a gap with a hammer type throw lol. Pretty good for that 🤷♂️
You need to throw the Groove harder and it will hold straight (turn a tad left rhfh). You only get the -2 turn if you throw hard enough for a 13 speed.
I’ve never had one but I thought they were a supposed to be a lot less stable. Discs vary so much from batch to batch. I have a champ shryke that is the most overstable disc I’ve ever thrown... I use it as a forehand utility because I can’t throw it 150 feet without it crashing over. Then I have a star shryke that’s heavier and almost understandable... it’s really weird and I wish you could throw them before buying them. Hard to know what’s what.
I've found 2 groves. The first one was brand new and the second was very beat in. I actually liked the older one, it flew similar to a Beast. I hated the new one and gave it to my son. He loves it, and has certain holes that it is perfect for. The difference is that I can just barely throw 300 ft and he can throw 450 ft all day long. He throws close to the same with forhand.
It was only a slight tailwind. Have thrown it into a ripping headwind and the stability helps it here but the lack of glide means it doesn't go very far.
I've always used the groove for a hammer throw it is very consistent that way the reason I initially clicked on this video was to try potentially buy the groove in the thumbnail off you.
I'm not sure if they named it differently recently but I've seen one of these labelled as a monarch anyone know if these are the same or something different altogether
Different discs. The Groove is a speed 13 disc while the Monarch is speed 10 and way more understable with a turn rating of -4. Haven't thrown one but doesn't have much love either with a low review score on Infinite Discs.
Isn't the old Paul mcbeth star destroyer the same(in the sense that every one is different) ? Sounds similar in the explanation, but this one is terrible for some reason and the destroyer is legendary.
I’ve found at least 5 grooves, 3 were huge bricks, 1 was somewhat stable and 1 was under stable. None had a name written on it and I haven’t lost the 3 bricks yet. I’ve been using them as water discs for forehands recently since I’ve run out of discs I like to as a water disc.
“it’s a poor craftsman who blames his tools” i’ve had a few and for me flies far and stable. maybe not a perfect representation of its flight numbers but nothing to complain about
Good to see there is still plenty of love out there for the Groove. I'm sure there are some good ones and they can be useful, even the overstable ones.
Nope Look up modern Quest AT discs in the Shiny Champion/Z like plastic. Those discs are great but they have a flaw just looking at the pictures. The worst is the 10 meter brick, in old baseline plastic the disc was good but in any temps below 48 F the disc would shatter hitting anything other then chains as a person I know had the putter and I was thinking of getting it but the disc shattered hitting a small branch we could not see. yes even a DX Sonic would have held up better then this disc. Now the reason for low light was it was cloudy day and the shot was in the woods. Now the new putter the Quest AT 10 meter Brick when I saw those for sale last in early 2018, the Z/Champion like plastic was so soft it put the Steady Ed Gumput, Blowfly/II plastic to shame, the disc is so floppy only a spin putter could use the disc if the used the other hand as a open track guide.
I've received a heap of messages on contenders for the worst disc crown. Hope to check some of them out in the future. Will add your suggestion to the list. Fortunately here Down Under we rarely see the cold temps you mentioned.
@@DiscGolfDownUnder ONLY the newer Z/Champion Floppy floppy discs floppier then Steady Ed Plastic for the Gumputt molds are what is made, the New Quest AT 10 meter Putter is the floppiest LEAGAL disc on the market by new Quest AT company different from the old the one the molds and name got sold to. Another contender was PDGA legal set made for a disc basket they came with a crappy basket in 2000's and now without as the Mercury putter, Saturn Midrange, and Pluto driver, before Pluto had its planet status changed. After I threw for a few years and started to figure out how discs behaved, I went back and tried them out. They were all just terrible. @@joujouthedog I have seen the older DX like plastic for the 10 meter Brick shatter hitting a tree or part of basket at very slow speed with temp only at 40 F. Yeah I almost had plastic bits in my eye due to how the disc shattered like some of the older 2000 DX Sonic discs. Shame as the 10 meter brick was a great putter with the way it flew in the old plastic before did became floppier then the Blowfly/II and Gumputt. I was thinking about getting one of the old discs to test for long putting at almost my approach distance.
I've had three Champion Grooves and they've all flown the same. People love to hate this disc because its different and it's really hard to throw. First time I ever threw one (as a beginner) was the first time I ever hit chains on a drive. Its very difficult to learn to throw, and for a while I got frustrated with it, especially because so many people hate it and talk shit about it. I let all the hate/hype get to me and stopped throwing one for years. Now I always keep one in my bag now and every time I have to get max distance or go over a water trap I will rip one of these and it never disappoints.
Don't feel so bad about losing mine the other day now. Although, would be nice to still have just for the heck of it. Was probably one of the originals, as it didn't have flight numbers.
I found one and it flew great and straight when I started playing and I lost it, so I bought a new one and it’s just beefy and overstable. Use it as a utility disc
I'm convinced that people are just holding this disc completely wrong. The fact that you cut your hand up throwing it a few times really strengthens that theory.
The groove is simply a boss with a groove cut out. Call that what you will. I have witnessed a downhill thumber ace with it thrown like a baseball fastball. I think overhand is where it shines. That said, if you are maxing out at 70-80meter throws, you aren't throwing the disc fast enough to get a 13 speed disc to fly right. If you can't throw a boss and get its reported flight rating, there's not much point throwing a groove either.
Good luck. There are apparently a few out their that actually work but you've got to find the right run. However, there's usually a good reason why the Groove is one of the most commonly found discs and they never have a name or number on them.
I’ve owned 1 groove ever in my life and let me tell you, that thing was more stable than a brand new star firebird. -2 turn, bs, the disc was so horrible and inconsistent.
That disc is straight trash. Definitely worst disc their is. Don’t get me started about the rim on this thing. Most uncomfortable disc in the hand I have ever felt. I have been throwing for 20 plus years. So definitely have seen my fair share of different discs
you used a beat in disc you found years ago for a review, then blamed the disc for the inconsistant releases. Then condemn the entire disc based off this one used disc thats been in storage for years.
Had almost the exact same experience with my brand new champ groove straight from the factory store. Took it out once and it didn't live up to the flight numbers whatsoever. Encountered the same grip problems described here and my disc flies very similarly to the one reviewed, except it is even more stable and dumps harder! Super uncomfortable disc for forehand.
If you throw it pretty high and hard on anhyzer, will it keep the angle? And can it hyzer flip? I have been thinking about buying a disc like that after my old DDx got so beatup I can't throw it hard at all because it just flips over.
No it will fade out. I throw it flat or for flex shots usually. If you want a flippy disc I suggest something with a -4 turn. It will hold long anyz and will flip to fade when throw with hyzr
@@HAFrequency I have tried some discs with lot of turn, usually they just flip over and go straight into ground. DDx was great but it lost its nice flight pretty quick and got really understable. My champion colossus hasn't changed a bit and I have had it way longer than that DDx. Well, I'll have to look what I can find from stores near me, maybe something else from innova in champion plastic to last long.
Throw it sidearm. All I do unless you want it to cut hard. I throw this farther than any other disc. I will take all the grooves lol. Give me please if you don’t want them. I keep 3 in my bag at different weights. 167g is my favorite.
If you ever want to send a message to someone just write it on the bottom of this disc and throw a normal shot. It’ll be lost forever and someone will find it eventually.
Mobbin All Trails I felt the same with mine. It was very fast, it was very sensitive to nose angle, and requires a large amount of finesse all at once. It's marketed as an easy to throw and a straight flyer. It will fly great will a decent amount of turn if you can throw it fast enough.
I'd love to know how many Grooves have been manufactured and are sitting in drawers, boxes, sheds, etc. Because you don't see them very often on the course.
It's hilarious that you just found one and couldn't give it away. I found my Groove just abandoned in a fairway with no name on it just like that. Maybe Innova needs to start an amnesty program for people who want to abandon their Grooves instead of littering.
100m is not my max distance throw. Have plenty of other speed 13 discs that go further and match up with the flight rating on the disc. That's my major issue with the Groove - mine has zero HSS and no where near 5 glide.
I dont know, man. That new Innova attempt I have seen at an over mould, with the tabs on the bottom, looks laughable. I'll admit, as a newer disc golfer, I see Innova as the boring, old man of the major disc manufacturers, but that feeble over mould "looks" like the worst golf disc to me. That whole company needs a severe re-branding, though the new Halo Star series is a good start.
I got an xt nova, and the disc cracked within my first 5 throws without hitting any rocks or trees. (I think it happened when I threw a spike hyzer with it from about 100 ft out) Emailed Innova and they finally got back to me after a week and gave me credit for the disc to their online store. Which would be great if it didn't mean I would have to spend either money on shipping or on more discs to get free shipping. Needless to say, I think their overmold design sucks something awful as it doesn't even seem to last a rd of throws.
Yep, I did say my forehand is not great. I developed bad habits as a beginner and it's hard to change. I wish I could practise more and fix my problems but the body is not on board. The more I try to fix my issues, the more I come to the conclusion that I stick to the backhand.
Hey I'm sure there are good Grooves out there - I won't dispute that. But the one I have is way, way different to the Shryke. And I think everyone will agree the Shryke is true to it's flight rating. I'd love to know why every Groove is different, because coming out of the same mould there shouldn't be so much variation.
My groove was very consistent it always went straight into a tree or the water
I think the water is their natural habitat and that is where they try to return to.
In the 12 years I have been playing I have found more Grooves littered throughout disc golf courses than any other disc.
Send them all to me... 🤣

I used my groove for a downhill spike hyzer or a long forehand approach to a protected green. I like that it hits the ground, has a bounce and dies.
The groove is actually my favorite disc in my bag. I almost exclusively throw forehand with it though.

But the Shryke is a speed 13 too... And it turned for him...
But the Shryke was beat in more which made it more understable than the groove, you could clearly see that.

Encountered the same grip problems described here and my disc flies very similarly to the one reviewed, except it is even more stable and dumps harder! Super uncomfortable disc for forehand.
6 glide is absolutely hilarious. Its 4 *at best*.
Maybe it has an incorrect or inaccurate flight ratings? Maybe thats why people don't like it.
bad flight ratings? Innova would never! The roc has 3 fade damn it
"The groove is a real beefcake"
I actually found my Innova Groove... Found it in a lake, so now I understand...
It's the only disc I've aced with. I only have two but both from the same Groove, skip aces. I never understood the hate.
Clearly you missed the part where he said they are inconsistent in quality/flight characteristics
It's almost as if high speed discs are meant for people who can throw farther than 100m isn't it?
Watched this video... Found a champion tye dye groove the very next day. Cursed!
The shryke is one of my go to drivers
I lost mine😭
If you throw it pretty high and hard on anhyzer, will it keep the angle? And can it hyzer flip? I have been thinking about buying a disc like that after my old DDx got so beatup I can't throw it hard at all because it just flips over.
No it will fade out. I throw it flat or for flex shots usually. If you want a flippy disc I suggest something with a -4 turn. It will hold long anyz and will flip to fade when throw with hyzr
I lost my blizzard and went to a innova tern less flippy but more manageable
@@HAFrequency I have tried some discs with lot of turn, usually they just flip over and go straight into ground. DDx was great but it lost its nice flight pretty quick and got really understable. My champion colossus hasn't changed a bit and I have had it way longer than that DDx. Well, I'll have to look what I can find from stores near me, maybe something else from innova in champion plastic to last long.
They also made echo grooves.
Agree totally!
Even as a total noob 10 years ago I instinctively knew to stay away from the groove. It just felt weird in the hand.
Same
Throw it sidearm.
Great vid
I was just thinking to myself the other day how the Groove was the worst disc I've ever had.
Mobbin All Trails I felt the same with mine. It was very fast, it was very sensitive to nose angle, and requires a large amount of finesse all at once. It's marketed as an easy to throw and a straight flyer. It will fly great will a decent amount of turn if you can throw it fast enough.
I have Proto Star first run threw it in a field a few days and stuck it in the drawer.
I'd love to know how many Grooves have been manufactured and are sitting in drawers, boxes, sheds, etc. Because you don't see them very often on the course.
I think you guys are just complaining, it flies fine for me
You must have found one of the unicorns.
Groove actually has a nice flight
Groove is great for overhand and thumbers.
So let me get this straight. You don't like it.
I don't like it. ;-)
It's hilarious that you just found one and couldn't give it away. I found my Groove just abandoned in a fairway with no name on it just like that. Maybe Innova needs to start an amnesty program for people who want to abandon their Grooves instead of littering.
Trade-in program for a Shryke would be nice.
I bought one when it first came out. Threw it for about a week and put it up and NEVER touched it again 🗣😝😝😝 trash 🗑
I like my groove.
I have a groove that turns right :)
Is it a lighter one or one of the earlier runs? Curious to know.
@@DiscGolfDownUnder its 168g idk about the run
If your max distance with a speed 13 driver is 100m, you have no business reviewing speed 13 drivers.
100m is not my max distance throw. Have plenty of other speed 13 discs that go further and match up with the flight rating on the disc. That's my major issue with the Groove - mine has zero HSS and no where near 5 glide.
I would rather throw a groove than a Caiman
I dont know, man. That new Innova attempt I have seen at an over mould, with the tabs on the bottom, looks laughable. I'll admit, as a newer disc golfer, I see Innova as the boring, old man of the major disc manufacturers, but that feeble over mould "looks" like the worst golf disc to me. That whole company needs a severe re-branding, though the new Halo Star series is a good start.
I liked the Nova (Innova's attempt at an overmould) for awhile but then found MVP and Axiom. They know how to do overmoulds the right way.
I don't like mine either
It's a really bad disc. However is it the worst DX Viper?
Another one to check out. Is there a top 10 worst disc golf discs coming up? I hope not.
You have to have played a long long time to appreciate what the Viper used to be in comparison to the other discs of it’s day.
@@acehole9100 Exactly. The DX Viper was the best disc on the market at the time it was made. It's all perspective.
Your form is completely different with every throw.
Yep, I did say my forehand is not great. I developed bad habits as a beginner and it's hard to change. I wish I could practise more and fix my problems but the body is not on board. The more I try to fix my issues, the more I come to the conclusion that I stick to the backhand.
I love my groves
This is a disc golfmans sorry attempt at the bible: innova groove sucks; could be a riddle.
Looks like you just don't know how to throw a Grove
Bro, throwing an entire grove of trees is pretty tough. Give the guy a break.
NO SKILLS DONT TOSS IT I THROW IT400 PLUS 53 OLD PLAYER KNOW YOUR STUFF DONT HATE!!!!
*know
Hey I'm sure there are good Grooves out there - I won't dispute that. But the one I have is way, way different to the Shryke. And I think everyone will agree the Shryke is true to it's flight rating. I'd love to know why every Groove is different, because coming out of the same mould there shouldn't be so much variation.
OTHER DISC FOR OTHER PEOPLE !!! MAKE SINCE
calm down bro
Groove sucks, and as we all know, 400 feet on the internet = 200ft in real life
