I started taking your advice when I got a couple of plants from Ikea and now, 2 years later, I swear by perlite, a moisture meter, plant velcro and Sansi grow lights. My collection has grown to about 30 plants and I propagate so many that I regularly give them to 2 local charity/thrift shops. One supporting a cancer hospice and one mental health charity. Thanks for all the great tips, Richard. Me, my plant babies and the charities are all very grateful!! 🪴❤
I started watching your channel couple of years ago, when I initially bought few Creepers and Hardy plants, Now I have a collection of 700+ plants and I just can't stop adding more, it's no less than an addiction! Thanks for everything man!
I dont bother with a pipette for the stress coat. When you next get a new bottle make 2 pin holes opposite each other in seal. Gently squeeze the bottle to dispense. A drop comes out of the one hole and air enters the bottle through the other. ps I'm an absolute convert to the moisture meter. Totally brilliant.
I don’t really have fungus gnats anymore because of 2 reasons. First I create my own soil and second I have a carnivorous drosera plant that catches gnats all the time

At the beginning of the year I had a 100L bag of perlite, now I don't. I started growing veggies from seed in perlite and now the plants are still in pure perlite in a semi Hydro setup. And boy does this need a lot of perlite for about ~22 Plants plus some trays with herbs.
Love the information and between smiles and laughter! Your videos are the BEST always!!!! I enjoy them soooooo much! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
A lot of great tips, I like the one with the zeolite, looks great! I did the same thing with 6-8mm. perlite on any plants that attract fungus gnats, because the plant likes constantly moist soil. I put a 1" or 30mm. layer of perlite on top of the soil, it stops the gnats from getting to the soil and I got to like the clean way it looks... Double bonus.
Hi, that's interesting. I am at the moment finishing up on battling fungus gnats and have been trying to figure out what to top dress my ferns with. I never thought of perlite. Would you bottom water plants with perlite or can you water from the top? The other option was diatomite rocks. Not DE. Rocks.
@@sabb7857 It's better to bottom water if you decide to dress with perlite. Watering from the top will, over time discolour the pure white perlite and spoil the clean look. @@rdred8693ikr? I'm super fan-girling after watching an 1.5hr vid on plants (his 28 tips & tricks I think it was) and laughed the whole way through 😂
I found cat litter pans at dollar tree here in Florida for $1.25 and they're deep enough and long enough. I couldn't find anything cheaper. Those trays are costly.
I now use the moisture meter and haven’t killed my plants, and I fertilize with those seaweed stuff I buy at Amazon that small worse than raw sewage but it’s safe to use year round, won’t burn the roots. Come winter (south Florida winter) I will be watering only once a month.
I definitely use the moisture meter and the water conditioner. I even moved my calathea medallion out of the bathroom. It didn't seem to be happy in there anymore. I guess I will see how it does in my room.
Before even watching the video I'll try to guess it's zeolite! I have cash crop that requires fair amount of silica so I add zeolite, and indeed it's somehow porous and it's not in scarcity as perlite, cost effective (compared to vermiculite), and somehow beautiful. As for nematodes I use Paecilomyces lilacinus, in Ukraine we can buy a liter of saturated spore/mycelium solution for 2-3 bucks literally, I bought yukka before the war and spotted weird root bumps, so I used both Paecilomyces lilacinus and later Beauveria bassiana get rid of nematodes and possible soil insects. I use Beauveria bassiana to clean garden compost, as well. Thank's for another great video!
It's the rule on television and RUclips. Provide a teaser, and then delay content. Local news actually has a weather segment early in the half hour that intentionally holds back the detail that viewers tune in to see, and then make the viewer wait 10 more minutes for a later segment, to actually get the details. Why? To sell ads. If the segment is longer, an ad can be inserted.
Decorative rocks can make such a difference to the visual appeal of your plants. One thing I like to do is use small rocks and shells I have collected from places that are meaningful to me and fit the aesthetic of a particular plant or pot.
I remember when you were deep in the trenches of the great fungus gnat battle, I’m so glad the problem has started to subside for you! It’s such a bummer that the gnats hitch free rides in compost bc it’s cheap & good for the plants. Fox Farm soils are great but they seem to have fungus gnat issues as well.
Hi Mr Sheff, I just want to thank you massively for your tip re water conditioner. Until recently, for water, I had access to a fancy machine in a school science lab. My supplier has recently retired. Access denied 😮. Saw you mention on a Q&A video and ordered. Tonight I shall sleep easy. While I’m yapping, congrats on your top notch excellent and fun content🌿
I have a set of those terra cotta spikes. They are super helpful any time I go away on vacation. I use them on my outdoor porch plants and in my veggie grow bags. They were also a big help since this year was so hot.
8:10 I bought a moisture meter about 15 years ago and probably never used it. It actually still looks pretty new. I didn't dare to get any houseplants because everything in my care was just dying. Even the weed, lol. I found my meter few years back and added it to my garden stuff so I could find it when I would need it. Now, that I have started my houseplant "collection", moisture meter got its own space right next to the plants. I find it very useful, especially for plants like ficus, zeezee plant, calathea zebrithea 😁 and bird of paradise. Mine is actually 3 in 1... It measures moisture, light and ph.
You can buy Summit mosquito bits for fungus gnat control. Use the required amount for your container,, I use a large glass jar and a panty hose leg for the dollar store, to put the granules in, then pop them in the water in the jar to soak, I do this because otherwise you have to strain the bits from the water and with all my plants, I don't have time for extra steps 😁. Then I add the recommended amount to my watering can and water all the plants, I use the Sheffield method of 1/4 fertilizer each time I water, so I add that also. This kills the fungus gnat larvae in the soil ! So , no more fungus gnats. I also use in repotting and new plants I bring home. Works great. I use outside when bringing anything in that has over summered outside. That self fastening velcro tape is great for plants with huge stems/leaves (like my Elephant Ear (alocasia macrorhizza)) for when the leaves have stretched over to the light & you want to straighten it up. Mine is now about 6' 3" from the floor to the top of leaves (plant has about 20 leaves with 3 x 6ft leaves). I simply measure (roughly) with a generous overlap, select the leaves I want straightened, secure the leaves around the bottom of the stems, then you just slide the joined velcro up, pulling the leaves up in the process. Leave for a couple of days (I usually rotate the plant as well). The tape is very soft on the stems, so will not cause any damage. After a few days (literally) I remove the tape & job done. Straight plant.
When you buy the water conditioner it has a seal on the top when you take the cap off like a bottle of milk. Rather than peeling it off completely, I just poke a hole with a pen , this way you won't need a pipette and can easily control how much you use, one drop at a time

Excellent question, was wondering same before I go shopping today!
funnily, I saw a video just a couple of days ago about velcro, where it was mentioned that even though they were using it in the beginning they realised that it can be a cozy pest nesting area..
Not seen that myself yet
@@SheffieldMadePlants and I wish you never do, cause it does look very neat and tidy ☺ I was just adding some support bamboo sticks to my black zebrina and I wished I were using velcro instead of coated wire 😆 but it's in my head now.
@SheffieldMadePlants Not seen it myself either, but just get a tiny spray bottle. Use one part Hydrogen peroxide and 3 or 4 parts water. Mix in spray bottle and spray those velcro ties and kill any little bugs trying to hide out in your plants accessories.
Bought my water conditioner last weekend. Browning leaves, do your WORST!
Nice!
Man I love your videos 😍🫡👌
My style of plant keeping or plant parenting is so similar to yours 😁
I have the exact same problems, fungus gnats, lack of light, calatheas with brown tips... It's such a relief to hear you saying you are familiar with these things 😄
I bought the exact same first grow light you showed (the 4 rectangular light)- I need to upgrade for sure. I started using stress coat+, bottom watering, bought the moisture meter (life changing+++++) from your videos and it change my life as a plant parent 🫡🤝😁. Calatheas with no more brown tips, less fungus gnats, better knowing when to water... I need to buy the terracotta thing.... Thanks Master of the Sheffield Cult 🫡
Thank you 😊
How much does the cost of electricity go up with grow lights? Is it significant?
Try one and see how it goes. They’re LEDs so not a major drain on electricity
I asked the same question and was told it's negligible with LEDs, which was probably the answer my husband will regret soon 😅
I’m using cable ties to tie my plants
I'm in North carolina and I can't stop watching you. What's the app that tells you what's wrong with your plants

But how do you keep shears sharp?
Supposed to sharpen but i've not looked into yet. Still sharp
The black tray for me is a cheap cat litter box. Lol
So, I can use 100% perlite instead of a perlite/soil mix? Can I use this for my rooted snake plant? Thanks for your help.
Yes plants grow in perlite
Would love to know your thoughts on natural fertilizers or living soil as options for plant health! I am always scared to use fertilizers for fear of burning my plants.
As long as you stick to recommended dosage you're fine
I have a whole roll of plant velcro & I lost it within a week of getting it
couldn't find a link to the BLACK TRAY and would really love to have one. Please advise where to purchase. I love your videos and I have bought several things you have recommended. Thank you!!!!
It's an elho branded tray
