I was walking through the plant section of a shop today and had your voice in my head saying the names of the plants 😂 and heeded your advice on some of them and left them on the shelf. Thanks Mr. Sheffield!
I’ve heard rumours that the Sheff family is moving in the Buckethingham Palace as Richard has a new full time job: to look after the indoor plants of the royal family.
The wizard has helped me so much in the last couple of weeks it's almost comical. I searched around and decided on Sheffield Made Plants as my mentor. I was worried that I did not pick someone closer as I'm from Canada but man am I pleased with my choice. Rich's advice and his responses are always daily and around the same time. It's awesome. As I decided to start fresh, my plant hobby, it is building fast. With around 34 varieties in a few weeks in moving. Most are babies or I transferred to growing in water. There are only about 5 to 6 fussy ones. It's all Rich's fault. lol DON'T MIST PEOPLE! Love and Peace.
I threw away a monstera this morning because it had mealy bugs I couldn’t eradicate. Sometimes you just have to start over. Your advice has been so valuable! Off to the plant nursery for a replacement.
I got so many pests of all kinds on my house plants this spring that I finally decided to try a systemic insecticide. Presto, even fungus gnats are gone! Now the only plants I pitch are those I've killed due to my own ignorance (I'm looking at you, Calathea).
I recently moved into a new office and decided that the decor theme would be a conservatory. My collection of plants is growing and your advice has been invaluable. Each time i think of them as my green babies, you pop in my head. Many thanks, and best wishes from sub tropical South Africa. ❤
No, you are not the only one who feels all itchy when reading/dealing with plant pests 😆 Thanks for the pruning reminder - I paused the video to chop the top off my very leggy monstera, which I'd been debating doing for ages.
I walked through the plant section of my local store and saw some of your favorite and not favorite plants, then remembered some of your “Mrs. Sheffield” lines and laughed out loud….all by myself. I had a moment there. I love your little dramatic moments in these videos so much. 😂 Keep it up!
Hi Mr Sheffield! I am pretty new to plant keeping and I recently discovered your channel - I absolutely love it! You have given me so many useful tips and made me buy more new plants!!! Thank you for doing what you do! 😊
New too. I had a few plants but my kitten destroyed them. Now that he's grown I'm trying again. And keeping plants in a room he doesn't have access to.😂
We got a Zebra Calathea and have no real issues. Use rain water and got it in a spot about 3/4 meters from a south facing window with a little more shade provided by our Monstera. It gets a little crispy on a leaf or two if it drys out quicker than I expected but otherwise it's doing grand and got a bunch of new growth coming through this year 🤙
Aquarium water conditioner, if it’s a good brand, does two things to water: It removes chorine, and it breaks down chloramine and ammonia into available nitrogen. Both these things are good for plants.
I now mist my plants every day. It may not help with humidity, I don't know, but I do know that it helps keep spider mites away. When I don't mist for awhile, the mites appear. Love your videos.
I love hearing the proper and complete plant name roll off your tongue. I have had plants for years but am now getting down to caring for Them properly. I find that all I need to do is, follow your channel to receive the assistance I need to help my plants thrive /survive 🤓 I appreciate the humor in your delivery. Sometimes, I am shocked how fun it can be to learn new things . ❤ I am just now preparing to learn all I can about moss polls 😉👍
I have 14 of varieties calathea and maranta…ever since they need spray water for humidity, all grown happily…thanks again always learn your videos and of course enjoy to watch your all plants..xx
Im glad i found this channel😅 i recently started taking care of plants, and as a newbie i wanted to start with one succulent. But the lady selling me the plant convinced me to take another one, a fire fern, saying it was very beginner friendly. I never thought plants could give so much stress Thankfully i've already learned a few things about succulents from this channel
I agree that misting is useless for humidity, but it can work wonders to free leaves that get stuck when unfurling. I've saved quite a few of my Melanochrysum leaves by misting them when they got stuck in the stem.
I live in the Pacific Northwest. I was afraid of sun burning my snake plants. All that did was make my plants leggy and slow growing. I put them in a south facing window and they are growing at a steady pace. Fish tank water has been a game changer. I'll never need to buy fertilizer again. Even for cactus and succulents it's great.
I live there, too, after living in Southern California for decades. Our house, near Seattle, has very wide eaves and is surrounded by Douglas firs, so virtually no natural light is available, especially in winter. Mr. Sheffield's lament about dark and rainy days fits the climate here perfectly, and I've found that his advice is the most applicable to my situation of anyone I've watched. Best tip: grow lights! I have them everywhere and I, too, wonder what the neighbors think we have going on.
Great video as always Richard!😂 Loved the tid bits of humor here and there. Made me laugh out loud! 🤣 Thanks for always making great content my “plant friend”😉😄
What ive learned growing Monstera's indoors that it is very beneficial to spray the leaves every week or two. I noticed that it helps growing new leaves. I think this is due to the fact that indoors the leaves of the plant wil collect dust and grees that is naturally in the air indoors in any house. You wil notice that when you spray of the Monstera's ( i do this outside ) there leaves whil shine alot more, and the new leaves wil grow faster. Just a free tip from a happy grower. Greetings
I have 13 calathea, I love them! My orbifolia are stunning and getting so big and full with summer and the heat moving in 🙌🌿 I do love to shower plants and hose them down, my bird of paradise loves a good shower, and shower is probably the easiest way to clean Thanksgiving cactus
I thought jade would be terribly difficult to propagate so I bought a few. Now, I’m having to GIVE them away because I have so many. 🤣 If only I’d found this channel sooner!
I've seen videos of so-called "prop lifting" and have been doing it for decades! The videographers only admit to taking plants that have fallen on the ground, but I'm with you, nothing wrong with carrying a small pair of scissors at all times. After all, our host here sings the praises of pruning, so we're actually "helping" the plants.
I have a "surviving" calathea. She would grow a leaf and as that leaf starts to die, a new leaf grows alongside. So on average, I have a leaf and a half. Lol... I do use stress coat as I have lots of aquariums. I also tried giving it milk as I saw that in another video. It did quite help. You are so true, these challenging clatheas are very high maintenance.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but if you were to place the "related video" spot earlier it'd be easier to actually click it. When it pops up at the last second it almost always goes by too fast to click, and depending upon one's own settings, can easily switch to another channel's videos.
If you’ve never been to Hawaii you really should go-the pothos growing wild had the biggest leaves I’ve ever seen. I lived there and fell in love with plants because of it ❤🌸 thanks for all your great videos!
You can buy super clean reverse osmosis water for around .50 cents a gallon at most pet or fish stores. Come when they clean the tanks and you can get the fish poop water, the plants love it!
I agree that misting plants doesn’t affect the humidity much, unless you do it all day. But that takes all day, and also, everything in the house will get soaked. There are ways to boost indoor humidity, but you probably don’t want to do any of them, if you also have to live in the same room.
I recently repotted 3 of my begonias into LECA because crispy leaves, my Angel Wing begonia rewarded me by dropping all its leaves 😩. I hope it recovers 😢
I tried it and the plants dried off immediately afterward. I bought a humidifier for winter, along with a temperature/humidity gauge and found that since my plants are grouped together, the humidity stayed the same whether it was on or off (60%). The only time it increased was when I set the humidifier at "high", which made my table all wet and didn't seem to make my plants grow any better. Baby's tears are definitely a closed terrarium plant.
Personally, I've found that a philodendron and arrow plant I have had a significantly easier time unfurling their leaves after I started misting them every day. Misting doesn't help with humidity per say, but certain plants' leaves need some extra moisture to thrive.

Hi Rich, love your latest video. I spray my plants and clean with micro fiber cloth . I think I suggested to put Jim in your bedroom your other Monstera to be friendly. Best to you always. Have some fun with your human kids. Good luck house hunting. Love ya Billie from Philly
I like calatheas but agree that I don’t like adjusting my home to make a plant happy other than light , if you would like one that actually not picky about humidity, get the rattlesnake variety
I am so happy to find your channel. I’ve had houseplants my whole life, but married, moved to a colder climate & wasn’t having much luck. Finally started seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and was thinking of trying new ones. However, for the 2nd year in a row, I went to help my mother & was gone for a month. The 1st year, I came home to beautiful plants. Last year I came home to dead plants, including my Grandmother’s Christmas Cactus. I’m 68 so that may give you an idea of how old it was. My husband swears he did what he did the year before 🤔. Now I’m leaving again for mother’s and am terrified about what I may come home to. I went to Amazon and got your water meter & the API Stress Coat, game changer! Love them both! I have shown my husband and I’m still nervous as to what I’ll come home to. Love, love, love your channel. Thank you❤
I’ve learned over the years that I have to have a spot in mind when purchasing a plant. I’ve rearranged my house just to fit my plants in. 😂 If I can’t find a suitable spot for it, even though I may really really want it, I won’t purchase it.
Yep Rich, I'm at it again. Dracaena fragrance----3 more baby varieties to go with the one I already got. kentia palm ----20 incher spider plant baby---to go with my 4 that I propagrated, these are growing in water. very appealing water feature. caladium plant caroline whorton--------holy shit, it's 20inches high with leaves bigger then your hand Rich, going to grow this baby in water(new experiment) Now I am done! I ordered a second bamboo stand so I can keep my earth plants separated from my water ones. BUGS! You have a gorgeous weekend my plant advisor and plant friend. I will be changing earth and cleaning plants/pots. lol relaxing to me.
Buying with a space in mind, and then it doesn't thrive in said space so i have to run around in the house looking for a space😂 my maranta is stressing me soo much..
Great video!! Can you tell me what plant that is at time stamp 8:59?? It looks like your Elgergrass but it's all bright green, no purple? I found that light for me made the biggest impact. I did order 2 separate Sansi grow lights but I am not really a fan. They are EXTREMELY Hot! I burned myself trying to set them up! I am afraid to leave these on in my bedroom with no one around all day. I tried to return them but the shipping was cost prohibitive. I might try and sell them on FB marketplace. I found Barrina's to do the trick for me. I can touch and move them even when they have been on all day. With a new grandbaby on the way I need them to be safe. Thanks for all your amazing videos! they are so much fun.
If I may Mr. Sheffield, I bought a baby monstera last late summer & it’s happily growing. But, it’s really growing (6 leaves, I think, & appendages) I feel it’s time to replant. Two ?? When I repot, should I bury the appendages? I also bought a pot roughly 2.5 times bigger than its current one, I’ve watched you & it looks like they enjoy being root bound. I plan on buying a moss pole before I transplant, but I need your advice first. BTW, I ❤❤❤ your show, you are hilarious! Educational without being boring. Thank you.
What’s appendages? Try not to bury the stems or petioles in soil cos that can cause rot issues. Keep the crown at the same level it is now. You’ll be fine though. Forgiving plants
How do you keep the chlorine and all out of the calathea soil when you spray them off? My calathea medallion is particularly sensitive to that and I make sure I always condition its water.
My plants are all huge after 15-25 years of growing. I stopped buying new plants now. The cuttings I’ve given away to friends and family. I have thrown some away because I don’t have enough room for them. I get great light from my 5 SW and NE facing windows. 20 years later the only space is hanging plants from the ceiling. I’m 73 and will take any advice. Thanks
Another big leaf specimen that takes a lot of time to clean. Hahaha Luckily I don't like big leaves. Too many outdoors that made me insensitive to them. Yes, I live in the tropics, Brazil to be specific tho you don't care. I need 4 plants to complete my *Ten Is Enough* collection. Good luck cleaning the big leaves. Moisture meter 😂😂😂😂 I don't need it. The weight of the vase, my finger and sensitivity never failed me.
Just wondering how many plastic cases you can fill with a 3 liter bag of Sphagnum moss. Really want to make my own moss poles but I am unsure how much moss to buy. Thank you in advance!
Great video Sheff, thanks for the tips! I was wondering what your take, on products like babybio leafshine is? I use it here and there, looks lovely, all glossy, but worry a bit about unwanted effects? Have you used it? Also, I've just followed your link to the water conditioner, got some on the way.... do you use it on all of your plants or just the tricky ones?
Hello Mr. Sheffield! I’ve put a small spoon of miracle grow soluble plant food in a gallon of water. I haven’t used all of it because I don’t have many house plants. Will the solution last in the container until next month, or should I make smaller batches next time?
I wonder if the shockingly cold water that comes out of the garden hose might be too much for a plant. This is just a thought not a criticism. Of course if you uncurl your hose and leave it spread out in the sun, the water in it will heat up a bit. I recently sprayed the tops of a dirty plant with the kitchen sink sprayer.
I put mine in the shower with me, so the water's warm. We still have the heat on here in Seattle, and plants can only go outside for a couple of months per year when it's "summer".
Watching this right after making a humidity tray is very humbling 💀 My poor coleus plants don't get enough humidity in my dry home... Right next to an air vent.
Mr Sheffield... as always a fabulous video!!!! I wondered about the water conditioner for plants? I don't use tap water for watering as I'm in a very hard water area! Instead I set myself up a water butt so my plants have rain water. Is this okay, do I need to condition?
Does the moisture meter that you show in the video really work well? i read so many bad reviews on that meter and had some bad experiences with that specific meter myself. After doing some research i found out that there is also a meter from the brand Skyard, this one has many good reviews and i ordered 2! i also believe that the Skyard meter is the original one and the other ones are knock-offs.
Should the ground of peace lilies always remain wet? because i read and heard that they come from really wet areas and can even grow in ponds and swamps but i also hear people saying im ust let the ground dry out, what should i do? 😆

Aquarium water conditioner, if it’s a good brand, does two things to water: It removes chorine, and it breaks down chloramine and ammonia into available nitrogen. Both these things are good for plants.

Yes that's a young elgergrass
Love your videos and all your plants, but dusting must be a nightmare. 🙂
I wanted to check out that soil, but they don't shop in the USA. 😢
How do you keep the chlorine and all out of the calathea soil when you spray them off? My calathea medallion is particularly sensitive to that and I make sure I always condition its water.
Good point. You can’t but the cleaning is only every couple of months so can prob get away with it.
Does that 👑 singularly Excellent dust Bin have a name ❓
Haha what shall I call him/her?
@@SheffieldMadePlants bob ?
My plants are all huge after 15-25 years of growing. I stopped buying new plants now. The cuttings I’ve given away to friends and family. I have thrown some away because I don’t have enough room for them. I get great light from my 5 SW and NE facing windows. 20 years later the only space is hanging plants from the ceiling. I’m 73 and will take any advice. Thanks
Another big leaf specimen that takes a lot of time to clean. Hahaha
Luckily I don't like big leaves. Too many outdoors that made me insensitive to them.
Yes, I live in the tropics, Brazil to be specific tho you don't care.
I need 4 plants to complete my *Ten Is Enough* collection.
Good luck cleaning the big leaves.
Moisture meter 😂😂😂😂
I don't need it.
The weight of the vase, my finger and sensitivity never failed me.
Nice place to live
Great video 😀🇨🇦
Thanks 👍
I love your humor 🙃
Thank you 😊
Just wondering how many plastic cases you can fill with a 3 liter bag of Sphagnum moss. Really want to make my own moss poles but I am unsure how much moss to buy. Thank you in advance!
About 1.5
Mr. Sheffield, which moss poles do you suggest? Couldn’t find it on your Amazon page
I don’t at the moment. The ones I use are annoying
3:02 you’re hilarious 😂
Thanks!
Thank you. Could you please link the water conditioner in the amazone store? Thx!
It’s linked in the description
Still not seeing the next video on screen. Can you it the link to it in the more info section please.
What device are you using?

Is it best to leave trimming / cutting down the plant to spring? Winter has officially started down under & didn’t get around to cutting in autumn.
Depends if your plants still grow in winter.
💚💚
Great video Sheff, thanks for the tips! I was wondering what your take, on products like babybio leafshine is? I use it here and there, looks lovely, all glossy, but worry a bit about unwanted effects? Have you used it?
Also, I've just followed your link to the water conditioner, got some on the way.... do you use it on all of your plants or just the tricky ones?
Never tried it. I tend to not bother with things like that
Hello Mr. Sheffield! I’ve put a small spoon of miracle grow soluble plant food in a gallon of water. I haven’t used all of it because I don’t have many house plants. Will the solution last in the container until next month, or should I make smaller batches next time?
I’d go for smaller batches. Not sure how long it lasts though
I wonder if the shockingly cold water that comes out of the garden hose might be too much for a plant. This is just a thought
not a criticism. Of course if you uncurl your hose and leave it spread out in the sun, the water in it will heat up a bit. I recently sprayed the tops of a dirty plant with the kitchen sink sprayer.
Maybe in the depths of winter but to be honest i only do this when it's warm enough 😁
I put mine in the shower with me, so the water's warm. We still have the heat on here in Seattle, and plants can only go outside for a couple of months per year when it's "summer".
@@lindaschad9734 - I'm in Connecticut, hose water is always ice cold, summer or winter, ha ha.
Where I am I can only put a lot of my plants by windows in Winter, or they get burnt to a crisp
4:32 dont take that out of context
Watching this right after making a humidity tray is very humbling 💀 My poor coleus plants don't get enough humidity in my dry home... Right next to an air vent.
I’ve tried moss poles and they are difficult to keep moist in my dry climate. Does the soil in the pole work better?
Easier to hydrate but it’s very messy
❤
Ah the adaptation plants i have bc i have so little light.😂😂. But always trying bc how sad i am latly at least ny plants to be cared and my kid
Mr Sheffield... as always a fabulous video!!!! I wondered about the water conditioner for plants? I don't use tap water for watering as I'm in a very hard water area! Instead I set myself up a water butt so my plants have rain water. Is this okay, do I need to condition?
Rain water is perfect
@@SheffieldMadePlants awesome stuff, thanks for the heads up! Keep up the fantastic content!
It works for me. Depends on the soil maybe
I have the same one and it works great for me. I will never be without a moisture meter again.
I'm going through rainy season now, and my plants are definitely suffering. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Damn babe, I don't control the sun.
what time you open your growlight and how many hours a day😊😊😊
12 hrs a day
Should the ground of peace lilies always remain wet? because i read and heard that they come from really wet areas and can even grow in ponds and swamps but i also hear people saying im ust let the ground dry out, what should i do? 😆
Moist not wet
