In this lesson, we explore the concept of using all 12 notes of the chromatic scale over a blues shuffle. Since music is all about tension and release - a hierarchy of dissonance, if you will, it is entirely possible to play any note if handled responsibly and with good phrasing.
In this one-take video, I leave the track running (a blues shuffle in A) at the end so you can play along and try out this concept for yourself.
For the most tasteful results, remember to retain your blues sensibilities at all times. Have fun!

I roamed the earth with the dinosaurs. Yes everything was shrouded in mystery. Long live the Information Age. Thanks for inviting me to your blues lab. Brilliant.
Ha ha! Thank you very much, Tim!
Play these 5 Dominant 7 shapes, all on just the top 4 strings of DGBE. E7, 2130; D7-shape, 2434; C7-shape 6757; A7-shape, 9797; G7-shape, 999-10; and E7 again at 14-13-15-12.
- These shapes might not have all the chord tones but they are easy to use as starting shapes for soloing. -
My favorite guitar tutor. 🎸 The Red Rocks man!!!!!!! Get it man I'm watching.
Thank you so much!
@@BobbyHarrisonGuitar my pleasure 🙏
You're one hell of a player & teacher, well impressed Bobby😮
Wow. Thank you very much!
Take the 5 CAGED chords and make them all Dominant 7. Now here’s how to use all 12 notes: first find 1-3-5-b7 in each position; then 1-b3/3-5-b7 and only ever go UP from b3 into 3 (into the chord tone). Now, one by one, add in 4-b5-6 and 2 which is hard to use properly. Now you’ve got 1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7 which is Mixolydian combined with the Blues scale.
The last of the 12 notes are b2-b6-7 which can all be used chromatically over a Dominant 7 chord. - Cheers!
Bobby very good lesson. The reply of the caged system . Thank you
Thanks Bobby that was great, now someone who could use all 12 and did quite often was Frank Zappa, have a listen to ‘What’s new in Baltimore’ 🎶
I'm lost for words. That was too good. Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Dear Bobby. Your vídeos are truly inspiring! Thank you a lot!
Thank you very much!
Excellent Lesson, Bobby! Missed your informative videos!
Thank you kindly!
Going to see Brit Floyd here in Ft Worth Texas and the end of the month. Ive been watching your Red Rocks video and then discovered you are no longer with them. Dang was wanting to hear you play. You have a fan here in Texas bro.
Thanks very much. Yeah, I left the band 9 years ago.
Good vid.
Thank you very much!
👍✌️
the thumbnail was not mirrored but the video is... mate, stop catering to the righties. Hendrix played lefty, Albert King, Dick Dale, Atahualpa Yupanqui, if they played lefty, why do you feel the need to appease righty players by flipping the video around?
I recently made a video about this very topic. Flipping the video makes it universally easier for most people to follow, including most left handers.
If lefties could only learn from other lefties, they’d be left with very slim pickings on the tutorial front. I can’t cater to a tiny sector of the guitar community.
I can play a right handed guitar upside down, but that would make me totally inaccessible as a teacher. As far as I’m aware, Albert King and Dick Dale never had to make tutorial videos.
@@BobbyHarrisonGuitar fair enough
Tattoos, check. Guitars in background, check. Boring pentatonic solos, check. Speaking of flat sevenths, check.
Welcome to the land of delusional self proclaimed 'artists'. John Lennon would tear you a new one
Have a word with yourself, mate - it's an (excellent) instructional video - Bobby's a teacher, he's not claiming to be an artist.
Dude this is a GUITAR LESSON! Like the other commenters have already said he's not claiming to be an artist....also...thre's a lot more than pentatonic licks going on in this lesson. The clue was in the title. It's always the trolls with the least talent that shout loudest. Anybody reading this should check out Shypoke's 2 videos...complete with out of tune singing & cliche lyrics about the Lord....I wonder what John Lennon would make of Shypoke as an artist!
