    Very interesting model don't know if I can justify buying one as they are a bit pricey. I would also have expected a crew fitted for the price

    Excellent informative review. It certainly looks a cracking model, but with the price being so high I think I'll fit my earlier Bachmann 47s with Legoman MNR sound chips and forego the spinning fans and tinted windows.

    Good review. However, at that price, I'd be wanting the louvre vents to open and close when the power increased/decreased.

    Definitely agree about the one piece Snowplough. I have some on the older WCRC 37’s I own, and I painted the connecting brackets between the centre and outer ploughs black. Really helps to disguise the fact that it’s a one piece moulding.

    One thing I noticed is that for that time period the loco should only have one tail lamp illuminated, you can one or the other on but not both. That modification came in the late 80's.

  • @stocktonjunction

    Couldn't justify the extra cost. They could of put etched grills in the roof sides too its certainly a nice model I have a couple of the old bachmann 47's and happy with those and buying further older models would be preferable over a new one for me. But thanks for the great review

    • @outonroad
      @outonroad 2 года назад +1

      Not really, the etches would be very flat and as the grilles are part of the roof panel would have had to have had an unprototypical join around each of them. On our new 56 (Cavalex) we have moulded the grilles as actual holes through the body but I fear the 47 ones would be too fine for the tooling to do that.

    Great video! Although this new tooled version is definitely better than the original Bachmann model, the old one still holds up as a good model, and I would personally rather save a bit of money, and go for the previous version, as the old one still looks amazing, and I don’t care too much about absolute accuracy. Also, it’s worth noting that on Analogue these don’t have great torque…

    • @DeanPark

      Hi, All of Bachmann’s 47’s are good all rounders. :-) Bachmann are good at tweaking and improving their models. That’s why the 47 is one of their best. In my opinion.

    350! I paid 12 quid for a Hornby model on my 1st visit back to the UK in 1979. Still runs and I fitted a chip, and it works fine. Once it was weathered, it looks great, plus some adjustments, buffer beams, couplers, lights etc but yes, no sound.

  • @Simon-Davis

    I can see the sense in Bachmann producing an upgraded 47, especially when faced with the forthcoming Heljan model. Unfortunately its predecessor is a pretty decent model in its own right. The new Heljan duff is exactly that, I saw the pre-prod EP and knew then and there that I won't be buying any of those, so I bought 47012 as it'd be rude of me not to buy a Bescot locomotive being my local shed, and modelled in 1978-81 condition for good measure. It has to be said that sat alongside my other 47s it just doesn't stand out as significantly better to justify replacing my other models, which is a testament to how good the outgoing Bachmann model is. The windscreens are a nice touch, but thats something I've replicated before with 85% VLT chameleon car windscreen tint (I believe the 47s tint was 90% VLT or there about), a test swatch of which can be bought for pennies and will last for dozens of models. I do have a bit of a bugbear with the fans though. They're far too fast, and to be pedantic without the serck shutters opening they're totally redundant; shutters closed, fans are stopped. £40 lesson duly learned. If, and thats a big IF I ever buy another 47, it won't be the deluxe version again.

    Excellent review thanks Dave. I do have a few of the previous 47s and I'm happy with them. I will be putting this one on a maybe list. Enjoyed the video as always. I should point out to all who read your comments that the deluxe sound versions are in very short supply as only around 130 of each livery has been produced. If anyone wants one they should not hang around. The standard sound and analogue versions have been produced in greater quantities but again they are selling out as well. Have tried out the RFD version and was impressed with the improved sound which should I think be available on the the standard sound versions as well. Once again thanks for posting your usual non biased opinions and have a nice Christmas.

    Thanks - a superb review that’s helped me very much. I’m modelling the transition era so have a couple of the previous models in two tone. Whilst I can see the new version is clearly better in several ways I’m happy with what I have at the moment. I agree it’s expensive, especially the DC version and also compared to the launch prices for the forthcoming Accurascale locos which have very similar specifications. The green versions seem to be selling well though and the delux version can’t be had for love nor money in green so no doubt Bachmann will do well with this new 47.

I would get some of the older Bachmann 47's as well but as for the new model. One would be enough for me and I may well get a Petroleum one or an Intercity/Virgin Trains one but that depends on the availability of them in the stores. Great comparison Dave. Like you I have some early ones, and some later ones . RE the cab front, like you said the ploughs are lazy as is the continuation of bufferbeam steps with the poor solution of putting them through slots at the bottom of the body . I can see the chassis improvements on terms of detailing and running and I guess the ideal scenario for me would be re- equip the bodies I have with better chassis from these - but ultimately if that’s not possible in the future I’ll stick with what I have I think

    Thanks for the video. There appears to be a moulding line down the corner of the cab front in the yellow on the new model which is not visible on your ‘previous’ model. Best seen in you comparison at 7:48. Seems a retrograde step given its high spec claims. Well, it stood out to me anyway. Given the prices the ‘previous’ model standards are certainly good enough for this modeller. Thanks for your work again.

    An excellent review as always Dave. I have to say that for me the differences between this new version and the one it’s replacing are too finite to tempt me, particularly at the price point that Bachmann have gone for.
    I do wonder if they’ve done this to preempt their 47 being usurped in the same way that the Deltic & 37s will be in the coming months by Accurascale.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  2 года назад +1

      I think they were working on the 47 for a while, even before Heljan showed their hand with their 47.
      As for the Deltic.. I can’t see them taking on accurascale as with only 22 locos built it’s a bit niche. But you can be your last
      Dollar they will not be letting the 37 go without a fight. It’s far too numerous and popular to let a competitor just sweep it up!

    To be honest I'm not sure if cab details are important. It seems reviewers mention cab details and how impressive they are so I think maybe it is important 🤔, then cost, does it really add a lot more cost to the model?? Good review as per usual.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  10 месяцев назад +2

      I get what you’re saying. It’s seems that details we don’t really see are becoming an ‘essential’ when it comes to new models. The same can be argued for under frame detail that can’t be seen unless you lift the model to look.
      I think companies are now in a ‘detail arms race’ to better their models to steal a march on their competition. But the downside is a higher price to pay for the consumer.
      Years ago (I believe bachmann, but I may be wrong) asked its customer based whether they wanted their models to remain with the same detail for similar prices. Or wanted higher spec models, but those would come at a price.
      The rivet counters in the hobby (who shout the loudest) demanded more detail! The companies delivered on that, and now some of the same modellers who wanted all the detail now complain at the prices!

    Great video, I wondered how the new model would compare with Bachmanns previous version and it came out very well but they may have moved the model forward they have certainly shifted the price. Its not something I personally will buy, I like good sound and a good representation of the loco and the old models I have are superb runners and like yourself I won't be trading them for the new one.
    I'm looking forward now to seeing the Accurascale Deltic and Heljan Peak, still expensive in my opinion but no where near this. Most people can't justify this cost, its an extravagant purchase. I prefer to trawl ebay for a bargain.

    Not keen on the cab front glazing, not from the point of view of the tint but, particularly on the left hand window when you are doing the comparison at 9:14 there is a real prismatic effect round the bottom and right hand side of the window, I assume due to the thickness of the 'glass'.

    I have D1500, not sure which of the 2 versions this is. I may be tempted by the deluxe version if they do 727 in Caledonian Sleeper livery (because if I get one, why not go full out), but otherwise I wouldn't bother with the new release because it's so expensive and the older models are good enough.
    I'm actually buying more lima 47s again, with an EWS one currently in the post, because I can work on them like adding DCC sockets and painting the wipers black and suchlike, and I like collecting different liveries of the same types.

    • @lucitonstjames3925
      @lucitonstjames3925 2 года назад

      Be a shame for Cavalex if they do produce a 56. But Bachmann have been playing quite a canny game with the quarterly announcements so far. Can’t see a new 37 being far off, I think Hornby have all but given up with diesels , quite happy to live off the far of the land & you do wonder how long before Bachmann set about a class 31 , or a class 50. As Bachmann stated Rolls Royce models at Rolls Royce prices. The 47 is still cheaper than a Marklin / Trix 66 & the ESU equivalent. Only downer I have with the new models are the lousy couplings they fit, all that effort into the fiddlies & they keep persisting with those awful tension locks. You don’t pay 345 euros for a Marklin loco to then have to buy better couplings. Don’t know why they can’t supply as a spare a bogie minus the nem pocket so as to take a full 1 piece snowplough fitting that screws / locates on the underside of the chassis. As much as I like doing up / detailing up the old Lima gear , I do object to having to take a craft blade to the new models to remove the nem fitting / alter things just seems to defeat the object of the higher spec models.

I still have Bachmann class 66's that do the job brilliantly and are solid models. But in this case if Hatton's sort the quality control issues their model will be a seriously tempting prospect.

      The problem is that the customers think that it's a cheap process to manufacture models and that the prices are injust greed by the companies making them. In reality they are costing more and more to produce and with profit requirements being nibbled off at every point in the manufacturing process by each company involved, these margins add up which eventually has to be reflected in the price of the finished model.

    Great overview of the model Dave, it’s good to hear some positive aspects on this model for once, the announcement video just had people moaning that bachmann had retooled an existing locomotive, bet these same people would moan if bachmann hadn’t done anything, to me it looks brilliant and it is something that I would be willing to buy in the future, features like the working fans is brilliant and bachmann have done working fans far better than hornby did years ago as I remember hornby used rubber bands and it made the locomotives not run smoothly, working fans is brilliant feature and it is something that should be fitted as standard to more diesel locomotives, when you were asking if we need all this detail my answer to you is yes we do need this detail, we’re into a new decade now and we can do a lot more now than we could do years ago and things are advancing and getting better all the time secondly people want the detail on models now, as for price yes it is expensive but at the end of the day we are getting a lot of features included on a model and it is showing that bachmann can be a good company and that can still produce a great model especially with other manufacturers also making their own products.

    I agree with clipperrail, about having a basic version, at say the £150-170 mark. I think that while this is a very nice model, I think Bachmann have made it too luxurious, and not left a budget one in place. As regards the sound, and possible detail, it'll be interesting to compare this to the Hornby 47712, in Scotrail blue stripe livery, at £99, due for release in 2022 as a web exclusive item, for comparison.

    One thing you didn't mention on the details, and one that I've always been critical with the older 47... is the angled framework on the sides behind the bufferbeam cowling.
    Until this model, Bachmann's plastic chassis was based on the old R.S Carter drawings, which were pretty good, but had a far too steep angle than the prototype... so it was an error that Bachmann replicated.
    This new model has fixed that problem, and look much better.
    The battery-box/fuel tank area looks really amazing... far better than a clip-on box.

Let's not forget that we are talking about a hobby that used to begin at this time of year, boys getting train sets for Christmas and then adding to it as time went on, those days are long gone. The manufacturers are killing this hobby with their stupid greedy pricing and marketing policy of selling out virtually as soon as all the pre-orders have been honoured. it's about time they realised the age group of the majority of their customers, because in about 20 years most of them will be dead, who are they going to rip off then.

They could easily expand the "railroad range" and offer an entry level price, but they won't. There's a common trait in retailing that goes along the lines of "why sell 10 of a product for £10 each, when you you can sell 5 at £20", As I said in my earlier comment the average age group of railway modellers will not be around forever, and with very few new ones coming through, the manufacturers need to take a very hard look at where their markets will come from.
