    It is good to see the updated locos and hear the sound effects thru better speaker units. Plus I look forward to the scenic gap being filled in with the retaining walls in place. It sure will make a huge difference to the layout Dave.

      Cheers John. Yes the retaining wall project is dominating my modelling at the moment… it’s a massive under taking and one I hope will finally frame the depot area nicely. I’ll hopefully get an update of it soon, but it’s ongoing. :-) Dave

      Cheers James. It’s been the biggest single project I’ve done so far, so much work and planning. I’ve bits of walling lying everywhere as it dries etc. but I hope it will be worth it…I am certainly excited about seeing it installed.

    Great update Dave. Those new speakers made the world of a difference! That’s a huge project on the retaining wall, good luck with that. I know it will look fantastic when completed. I like the magnet idea for holding it in place. Have a great New Year and I look forward to following your progress in 2022. Stay safe. Roy.

    A good selection of topics there Dave, your video updates are like a News Bulletin covering different things - I really like the format, makes it interesting. I definitely detected better sound, especially the lower frequencies (the base engine sounds). Think I’ll be getting some speakers from Roads & Rails for the two sound fitted LT Class 20s I got from the Bachmann Collector’s Club early this year. The Class 47 looks superb, I’ve had sound fitted Large Logo liveried 47 711 on order for ages and apparently it’s now going to be released in the new tooling - can’t wait ! Then I can at last get my BR blue ScotRail push/pull set up and running. Well, I’ll look forward to your “Best of 2021” video, in the meantime mate, Happy New Year to you, let’s hope 2022 is better for all of us. Would be nice to meet up with you one day at a show perhaps. Take care.

    Hi Dave - Hope you had a great Christmas and all the best for 2022. I watched the video on my TV and you could here the difference with the speaker upgrade . With the class 20 it was louder but I found with them both you got more clarity so worth the change, The retaining wall will be a labour of love but well worth the effort. Shame about the fried chip but at least the loco was not damaged . For the DCC concepts Spike Stoppers do install oneconnection from the power supply then start the Bus wire and then put the other one on the end of the Bus wire ?

    Dave with regards to the retaining wall of that length it would have regular vertical expansion joints so that would fit in with your sectional approach and you can then avoid trying to hide the joint

My thoughts want to how long would a full scale project take? Probably a bit more than one fella a few months. I cant wait to see the finished wall I’m sure it will be worth your efforts with a quality look and feel. Finally who would have thought Dave Class 47 would buy another Class 47? Awesome video, as always.
    I ran in my new hornby B2 peckett earlier, and discovered that it wasn't a 4-pin as I thought (as per the W4 pecketts and the sentinels, and the railroad 0-6-0s. I have 3 spare 4-pin chips), but is in fact a 6-pin. Except it also requires a chip with a harness, or a micro chip, because the spare chip I have (a gaugemaster one with blue shrink wrap) is too long. So I'm going to bring the loco to my local shop and see what they have that fits it.
    At some point, I'll have to try and source some jumper cables for my lima 47/7s, I have quite a few within my fleet of 26 lima 47s and they look wrong without them.

    Thanks for sharing, the only issue with telling the difference on the speakers is watching it on an iPhone means I’m hearing it through an iPhone speaker! Haha. Merry Christmas to you Dave, the speaker upgrades are really outstanding, could tell the difference immediately and it's clear that the sound is much more realistic on both locomotives now. To be honest, the Class 24 original speaker wasn't that bad, but the Class 20 definitely has benefitted from the upgrade. The new retaining wall looks like it will be fantastic when completed and the solution to make them removable is highly ingenious.

    Merry Christmas Dave, hope you and the family are well and had a good Christmas.
    Sounds are definitely much better with the speaker upgrades, what a difference they make. I also bought the new class 47 in BR blue as well. Bachmann have done a cracking job with these, It's a really nice model. However I purchased the DCC ready version, I'm not fussed about engine room lights, fancy glazing or rotating fans either. I purchased a Zimo sounder decoder for a class 47 from Rail Exclusive and one their speakers a while ago and was really impressed with the sound quality, also I find the active braking is better on the Zimo decoders too. Look forward to seeing the retaining wall come together, that'll finish of the front of TMD nicely. Anyway all the best for 2022. Mark.

    Great video Dave! I thought I posted a comment a moment ago, but it seems to have disappeared! I only wanted to say, I bought the same 20227 and have upgraded the sound by adding just one 20x20 megabass from Roads and Rails in parallel to the sugar cube. I found a pair of megabasses had too much distortion and not enough treble to really enjoy turbo spooling etc. Having the sugar cube in parallel to one megabass you get the best of both worlds. Kind Regards Matt

    Ouch 🔥💥
    3 and a half meters of walling! Jesus I wept at the cost of 6 when choosing a material to build my arched bridge 😅
    The land between the track and the wall..
    Find a gravel drive, pull back the stones and grab some of the dirt beneath, dry it out and sift it down through a kitchen sieve. It makes for the best trackside dirt when mixed with Woodland scenics fine turf burnt grass and earth. Also another great material instead of real gravel texture is chinchilla sand, that's very versatile.
    Good stuff. 👍

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  2 года назад +1

      Cheers, yeah I use chinchilla dust for gravel mixed with fine ballast to give a good realistic material. I’ll try the chips earth idea on a diorama I’m doing!
      The cost of this project is massive….paints, thinners, everything is on a big scale and costing me £££! Hundreds of hours work on it already as well. I’m looking forward to getting some more progress on it soon….if nothing for nothing else, my sanity 😆 Cheers!

    Brilliant update their Dave the layout is coming along well, those retaining walls look very good in that dark colour, the new bachmann 47 is a fantastic looking model and it is definitely worth getting a delux version, your sound upgrades were quite good but I couldn’t tell much difference between each speaker personally, I also think it is a bit of a waste personally buying a sound chip and changing the speaker but this is just an opinion and some opinions can change so one day I may see a point in doing that or the change in the sound.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  2 года назад +1

      Cheers. The sound decoder will set you back £100-115. A speaker is £5.
      You are not wasting money as the sound file on the decoder can be better heard through a speaker upgrade.
      It’s sometimes hard to tell the difference when watching and listening as it depends on the quality of the speaker you are hearing it through! You really have to be there in erosion to get the full difference.

    • @davidstrains4910
      @davidstrains4910 2 года назад

      @@DeanPark while a speaker may be as cheap as £5 I don’t see the point in changing speakers, the reason is when I see other people buy a sound fitted locomotive and then they mention changing the speaker I just think why did they buy a sound locomotive or sound chip if they are not going to use the speaker that is included, I will agree there are some rubbish speakers out there for example some of the hornby TTS ones have rubbish speakers but to me I just think buying a sound chip or sound locomotive and changing the speaker is a bit pointless unless the speaker really is rubbish, like I say my opinion may change.

    great footage of a fantastic model railway- hats off to you sir !!- its a layout to be very proud of !! BUT with regards to the new Bachmann class 47 -rather than emphasize the tinted windscreen and rotating fan gimmick - also taking into account of the extortionate cost, I personally would be rather more concerned about the plain basics- e.g. - how smooth does it run/motor quality ? , does it take curves and cross points without any derailments? how well does it pull ?? along with the quality of the motor and how easy it is to access and service the mechanism !

    I'm intrigued to know what setup Mr Croft recommended for upgrading the class 20 speakers. The factory spec uses an 8ohm sugarcube, so I'd have gone with twin 4ohm wired in series, but as you wired in parallel I'm assuming you've used two 8ohm speakers to stay within the 8 to 4ohm spec of the decoder.

    One thing about wiring speakers in parallel - if you put two 8 ohm speakers in parallel, you end up with a resulting 4 ohms of load on the audio drivers, and you need to check that this won't result in the amplifier being over driven.

    The speaker upgrade on both locos is great: even over tinternet and wifi the difference is immediately obvious. Though it does make you wonder why manufacturers can't fit the better speaker themselves: I'd guess the cost difference for the likes of Bachmann would be fractions of pennies.
    You asked what we thought of the flashy windows. Well, they're flashy. I've not seen them in real life, only on videos, but I'd give them a thumbs down, personally.
    Had to laugh when you bemoaned the cost of the wall.
    Dave: I've bought three class 47s. Aren't they brilliant?
    Also Dave: I had to buy a three-pack of kitchen and a litre of thinners. This wall is costing a fortune! 🤣🤣🤣
    In the past I used white ink (from the graphic design shop), watered down a little with dirty water, to do mortar lines, but that was on plasticard, not MDF: maybe with the more porous MDF you don't get the capillary action which made the ink flow into the mortar lines?
    Thanks for another year of videos. Much appreciated and enjoyed. Have a good hogmanay.

    A word of caution with parallel speakers. Check the decoder spec. before "diving in". The simple Maths is Product ÷ Sum. 2 x 8 Ohm speakers will give you a combined Impedance of around 4 Ohms. 2 x 4 Ohm speakers will give you around 2 Ohms. Low Impedance speakers will give you louder effects............ until you toast the decoder.

      Hi, thanks. Not being overly electronically minded when it comes to decoders/speakers I consulted roads and rails prior to purchase and was advised to wire in parallel with these specific speakers. :-)

    Hate to pour cold water on this. But as a real life Railway Locomotive Mechanical Engineer, I have only heard ONE model producing a realistic sound so far. And that was a Marklin Gauge 1 German V200 Diesel Hydraulic at the gigantic Dortmund exhibition back around 1995 ! And there is a technical explanation for this. Small scales such as OO/HO are physically too small to accommodate a speaker large enough to replicate the base end sound of any loco whether steam or diesel, realistically. And with many layouts now having sound fitted locos, your ears are now subjected to an irritating faint high pitched background buzzing sound from all around the exhibition Hall.
    As any good music lover will tell you. "Digital sound is far to sterilised and tinny sounding". So old fashioned analogue records/record players are increasingly making a comeback, because they produce a much more natural sound !
    There is of course another worm in the woodpile. DCC which is required, if you want such unrealistic extras as tinny sounding train noises and lighthouse capacity dayglow interiors (all now absurdly expensive for good marketing reasons called Profit !!) DCC imposes a rigid inflexible and totally unrealistic method of operation on layouts. As it has never provided the most important aspect of real life train operation known as the "interface between moving trains and the signalling system in use".
    On virtually all European railways (including Britain) other than narrow gauge, NO train can move without a signal, even when shunting in a goods yard. For simple safety reasons !!! A signal is either displayed on the drivers desk (Super High speed trains such as TVM430). Fixed track side signals (such as colour lights working under Track Circuit Block methods) or even in goods yards where a "Shunter person" uses hand signals to control the trains movement !
    There is no reason why DCC couldn't fill this gaping operational hole, if the manufacturers who currently clearly exhibit a total lack of understanding as to how real railways work. Simply copied the methods used by modern computer power signalboxes. But until they do, DCC is totally hamstrung into a childish method of basically "drive any model train anywhere on the layout". There are a thousand reasons and rules why real railways simply cannot do this, or you get train crashes !
    My exhibition layouts have for 40 years copied the British Railways Solid State Interlocking (SSI) method to control the signals on my layouts. Which includes of course, real life track circuits, to detect the whereabouts of trains to ensure the signals ALWAYS show the correct aspect. This model version of a real life system is known as TCC (Track Circuit Control). With this system you still drive your trains. But if for example you set a route which takes a train up a track in the wrong direction, the signals simply will not clear. And if you ignore the signals, the loco will be brought to a dead stand by the real life type AWS system, before you can cause a crash.
    Doing it the "real life way" makes layout operation much more fun. It has also taught a number of my layout operators over the years the real life rules. And when the penny finally drops, there is always a picture of stunned amazement on their faces. This effectively changes a "toy train set" into a real Model Railway.
    Indeed the more enlightened and observant viewers at exhibitions, soon begin asking questions as to how my busy multi-track mainline layouts, always seem to work so realistically and fluidly. Which includes lots of realistic shunting as well as streams of mainline trains, all abiding by the signals. And ALL operated to sequence tables, so the operators don't have to waste time figuring out what train to run next, and where to route it !!!

      I’ll have a look at the settings when I get back on my pc. I cannot alter from my phone. RUclips really stuff too many ads into videos when they first go up. :-(
