- Many of you will wonder why I've tried to improve a model which already sounds really good, but I already have some excellent sounding Bachmann and Vitrains models which have been modified for better sound, and I wanted to make this as close to those as possible.

Been playing with cv”s on my drs 37602 and then discovered 2nd small speaker under pcb.
But couldnt work out how to pull out without damage wires.
Got there in end,but your video explains this so much better.

Good work Richard.....I think the parallel wiring creating less than 4 ohms is a serious problem/flaw in the design and I would expect the chip to blow! It seems like it was designed for two eight ohm speakers! It perhaps helps explain why a lot of locos are failing after a couple of hours!
Great advice as always. Ive removed the sugarcube speaker as I was getting crackling as you did, but one time the sound went very quiet after about half hour's running and the decoder became very hot. Not what I expected. All remained good the next day, but have been concerned. Your explanation that the two speakers takes the ohms reading below the recommended makes sense.
Thanks Richard for an informative video. I believe the new ESU speaker you tested may be the one they have developed in collaboration with Cavalex for their soon to be released Class 56. A recent Hornby Magazine video featured the Cavalex Class 56 with the latest sound file playing through this new speaker. The speaker appears to reproduce the sounds of a Class 56 very well from what I heard.
Hello Richard. Pleased that you are prepared to have a go. From what I can hear via my laptop, the first change (removing the sugar cube speaker), was a much better sound than the new ESU speaker. That one came across as rather tinny and lacked clarity of the base.
I assume that the sugar cube is about 8 ohms, hence the combined value of about 2.7 ohms. So why weren't they wired in series?
I seem to recall Accurascale designed their PCB with help from ESU, so why go outside the decoder specification.
I also seem to remember in the early days after the 37 announcement that an EM2 was the expected speaker.
Having said that, I think the Acc 37s sound great, and with the volume I can tollerate on a home layout there is no distortion.

Esu speakers for me, Richard, without the sugar cube. When I get my 37 over to you in the new year, I will just want the best results.
Many thanks for this informative video. My Accurascale 37 (37409) definately seems quieter than the Bachmann SFX 37 that I have and to that end, I've ordered a replacement speaker that's being advertised as a direct "Plug & Play" replacement for the "Accurathrash" one that's factory fitted. I've removed the sugar cube speaker as per your instructions, and the sound definately sounds a little better. I'm still undecisive as to whether I'll buy another Accurascale model - as mine has a few flaws (very dim lights, stay alive no longer working, quiet sound, cab/desk lights on same function and others). Please keep up the good work!
Hi, great informative video, I’m glad to see you have your DRS Accurascale class 37, now you’ve removed the sugar cube speaker it reminds me of my Hattons class 66, mine sounds like thunder when it starts up, thanks for sharing.
Hi, will the new ESU speaker in your video sound better with the Legoman sound file, just wondering because his sound file on the Hattons class 66 is awesome.

@@roadsandrails Thank you, I guess Accurascale did what they did on a budget basis, I did hear that their Hattons class 66 make over isn’t going to have an EM2 speaker onboard, it was designed for that earth moving speaker in the first place, what do you think about that?
@@StormmyStormmy I thoink they chose the speakers with good intentions, or were possibly badly advised, I'm not sure. Its a shame if the new ones dont have an EM2, I guess they are just trrying to be consistent across the range

Great insight Richard, definitely sounds better without the sugarcube, I’ve got concerns with my 37609 as the decibel level is less than 50db, and two of the three volume cv’s read 000
The dB levels might not be that exact in this case, it’s just a free app on my iPhone so I’m not sure how accurate those readings are, but it’s good for a comparison between them

My model has been returned because the sound stopped working totally, even tried decreasing the volume CV from 192 to 150 but still didn’t work.
Presently awaiting it’s return back to me
Great video. I have just got a 609 and the speaker is actually branded as accurathrash. It is nowhere near as loud as any of my other factory fitted sound 37's. I did a retrofit on one with a decoder and the accurathrash branded speaker and I can not go above 150 on CV 63 without it cutting out.
This 609 model though, really quiet. The rest of my factory sound are the same speaker as shown in your video without the branding on it and all sound decent.
I may try removing the sugar cube on this 609, though in that livery, it was fairly quiet and one of the poorer sounding DRS 37's at the time.
I have wondered if there was a way to up the turbo sound as some examples such as 606 had quite a high pitched turbo scream. 667 is the same for this. I assume not as there is no individual cv setting for turbo.
Someone else told me the latest batch of models is quieter than the older ones but I’ve not got any standard ones from the old batch to compare. There’s no separate cv for the turbo
@@roadsandrails they are without a doubt. If the removal of the sugarcube means you can pump it up I may have a try, no lok programmer though so a few CV tweaks!
This is very helpful especially spotting the incorrect parallel wiring of the two speakers which could blow the ESU decoders amp. Would not be confident of a warranty claim on a blown ESU decoder when the model is 6 months old.
I've just received my Accurascale Class 37 D6703.
Not impressed at all. The loco has a clicking sound coming from one of the gear towers. The lighting is so dim on the headcode boxes, sound is very quiet.
So do I send it back for a refund or get them to repair it and wait another two months....

The over all sound is great but a lot of the horns are terrible. A lot of time, effort and money is spent on “getting the sound right” but the horns, specific to each class seems to be ignored. Exhibitions sounds are a listener’s nightmare (!) when the same (repetitive) horns can be heard across many classes. Some years ago a TV programme “Railwatch” sought to tell the story of the network and featuring the IC125 and its journeys between London & Edinburgh. At one point Mike Smith (RIP), the presenter, took viewers into the stores and showed the array of horns and the classes they belonged to. They were also stored with reference to their musical notation ( G, F#, etc).
More research and recording, if available, could be undertaken in order to get the horns right as well as the engine sounds.
