I met Kane Hodder at Niagara Falls Fright Fest and he was as fantastic as you hoped he would be. I started crying when I saw him and it was pure nostalgia before me. He hugged me and took a picture. Then Dee Wallace next table over says "Kane what did u do to this poor girl?" 🤣 Then she hugged me too. Amazing
I love it. Granted it holds a nostalgiac place in my heart being the 2nd Friday movie I ever saw, behind Jason Goes To Hell, which I also liked but not as much as 8.
It was the first Friday film I saw, and so it has that special place with me too. I would say it's not anywhere near my absolute favorite, but I have quite the soft spot for it haha I even have an authentic movie poster, the infamous "I
I love listening to Kane Hodder... he's such an intelligent man who I think is arguably the greatest villain/killer in slasher movies. His body language while wearing the mask is genius.
You mean how he’s always breathing like he just ran a marathon and holding his arms out like he’s carrying 7 pieces of luggage? “Genius” lol He was one of the worst Jasons.
It's a damn shame that Paramount refused to provide a bigger budget (even though I'm pretty sure they could have afforded it) to allow Rob Hedden to use his original script. Because if they had this movie would have been so epic, I gurantee it would have been the best and the most successful out of the whole series.
You know what?.... a boat is a really cool setting for a Friday movie. It's dark, wet, claustrophopic, and nobody can escape easily. Everyone hates on this one because it takes so long to get to Manhattan. If they had left Manhattan out of the title and marketing, people would have appreciated the movie for what it is for the first hour, then had their minds blown in the the third act when they land in New York. It's all about expectations. I already knew about the movie's stigma when I first saw it, so I was able to take it as it is, not as how it was sold. Honestly, I don't think this movie is perfect (none of the Friday movies are) but I think it's way better than it gets credit for. It's in my top 3, behind only 4 and 6.
This one is in your top 3???? Baby, why??? Just why? OMG! This one is terrible. It was terrible to us fans even back in 1989. It looked and felt like a TV movie.
The reason Jason drowned in the original was because he was bullied for being deformed, yet in Part 8 they use a kid with and without deformity as Jason. Weird.
This movie had so much potential had the director gotten the budget he asked for, had the kills haven’t been so tamed it probably would have been the most epic Friday the 13th movie
I think many people did, even back then. Not only because it was Jason doing something humorous, but because we all had often felt like destroying someone's boom box for blaring garbage.
Bro Imagine people watching the direct recordings of Times Square, watching Jason there. And in the '80s too. This is one of the reasons why this is my favorite movie (from the series) 80's, Times and Jason
@Chaingun don't advertise what you can't deliver. The majority of people wanted exactly what was put out there because that's what it was suppose to be "gimmicky" or not.
Jason goes to Manhattan was the first Friday the 13th film I saw and this movie holds a special place for me. Despite the flaws of this movie, it’s one of my favorite sequels of the series.
For all of its flaws I actually like this film. It really sucks that Paramount wouldn't give Rob Hedden the budget he wanted, it sounds like he originally had an awesome movie planned out - Jason killing people on the Brooklyn Bridge, terror at the Empire State Building, punching the dude's head off at Madison Square Garden - instead we got Jason Takes A Cruise Ship. I enjoyed it but could've been way better.
mrExcellent101 Sorry, this movie sucked big time. The makeup of his face at the end was laughable and the flashback/dream moments were silly. Kane didn't even look big as he did in Part 9, he looked tiny here. I don't know if he gained weight later on, but I think he looked like a shrimp here.
Venting Show I mean yeah you're right I see the flaws and everything. You gotta just take it for what it is - late 80s horror - cheese. It was the end of the slasher genre and budget constraints made the movie suck.
After he is discussing this and looking at the shots, you can kind of tell by the rear of the ship that it is not really that big. I'll give them credit for creating the illusion that it was a big ship.
It's good to know the director wanted to shoot more in New York but just couldn't. When I first saw part 8 years ago I thought what the hell he's in New York for like 5 minutes.
If you get over the whole Manhattan thing, this really isn’t bad. I love the Jason on a cruise ship idea all on its own, New York was just the cherry on top.
I don't care what people thought of this movie. I loved it and its my favorite. Also the director who made it and script it did a good job even for the budget hats off to you sir!
This was my favourite movie in the original series, I liked the deaths, like how the teacher drowned in that sewage stuff, and of course, I like that they're in New York.
You have to appreciate the little touches in these movies. So much more goes into them than it would seem. Something as little as the name of the boat being "Lazarus" is clever. Perhaps a lot of people would miss that, but I appreciate them making that sort of effort for a "slasher flick". good stuff.
I think the biggest bummer is that the last 15 to 20 minutes are the best in the entire film. Why Paramount couldn't drop a bit more money is beyond me. Have Jason go through office buildings and apartments to cut costs. ANYTHING to keep him in the city.
These later installments were fun. I think after Part VI it was easier to just see him in the next vehicle they wanted to put him and have at it. it felt like jason had more room to broaden his horizons than other slasher/monsters did.
Alot of people will say that part 8 was the worst but I actually enjoyed this one because they finally took Jason out of the woods and brought him into the open and what better place to set Jason loose than New York lol
If you don't have the budget, pick a different city or don't make the film. Hell, I think Law + Order shoots on green screen now because of the ridiculous expense of shooting NYC scenes. On a side note, imagine taking advantage of an empty Detroit with a couple kids running around and Jason stalking them.
It must've been awesome for Kane Hodder, the movie may have been disappointing but you gotta admit it would've been so awesome to be at the filming of that scene in time square.
Its because the director diddnt pay attention to the continuity of the first 7.Its another reason this is the weakest Friday. Its simply plot holes because they diddnt pay attention.

Jason Takes Manhattan is my favourite movie out of the franchise tbh followed by the 1st Friday The 13th movie and I'm glad I watched this documentary because now I know why a lot of this movie was Jason on a cruise ship which is a shame due to the budget they had to work with I would've loving if they had the budget to shoot scenes in MGS, and the Empire State Building.!!
You can really see the height difference between them in that shot. You can see why Ronny Yu made the decision he did. But it's Kane's stride, heavy shoulders breathing and overall BAD ASSERY that makes the character for me.

I respect this director and his ideas, but I honestly think the series should have continued with the telikinetic girl and have john carl beuchler direct for part 8 instead.
This film was meant to be the end of the original, Paramount series. Jason actually "dies" for good here. The toxic waste destroys Jason's monstrous, adult body. This frees the spirit of the little boy that was always trapped within him (Ginny Field proposed that trapped little boy theory in Part 2). Part 9 is not a sequel to the first eight films; it takes place in the "real" world. Parts I-VIII are just loosely connected to Part 9, which was made by New Line Cinema.
You know what's really sad about this is that if they had just a slightly bigger budge this movie could have been awesome. I don't disagree with the OP. Having Manhattan in the title really hurt this film. If Manhattan was a surprise it would've played better.
Though it’s not my favorite Friday film at all. I do see your point. It kinda did give that hopeless feel
I love this movie. Rob hedden's ambition was great an Jason looked incredible in this film
The movie GROSSLY under delivered
I’m glad that they included the punching his head off kill in the game. So satisfying and hilarious.
The reason Jason drowned in the original was because he was bullied for being deformed, yet in Part 8 they use a kid with and without deformity as Jason. Weird.
The story behind the making of this movie would make a great chapter in a film school - "Doing the best you can with what you've got."
You sound like Burt Gummer.
I still listen to the opening credits song - "The Darkest Side of Night", til this day!
Troy F. Really great song

All of the F13 docs on RUclips are really cool. I love learning how these movies were made and to see everyone's enthusiasm in making them.
Love how the ship is named "Lazarus", he was risen from the dead, like Jason was. I find that strangely funny for some reason, lol.
Also during the subway scene, you can see a poster that has "Jason Lives" written as a graffiti on it.
people hate that jason is on ship most of the time and the title is NY. but Jason on a creepy old ship in itself is a cool concept.
It's still not what the movie was supposed to deliver.
