I was there when Maude Boate (Michael Gates) invented these foam style wigs. All of the materials came from an industrial waste/offcut facility called Reverse Garbage. Basically we were all so broke we didn't have money for anything so Maude came up with this to cover the cost of 'wigs' for herself and then for production budgets. She probably started making them in 1993 as far as I remember. Of course Stephan Elliott stole this and a lot of stuff off us for Priscilla the movie. Then much later Maude got the contract to make the wigs and headpieces for the long-running stage production of Priscilla so what goes around, I guess.
Lizzie Gardner was coming to Seattle to give a lecture on her designs for, P,QotD, and a friend of mine was working at the museum that was sponsoring the event, so I decorated the lobby of the theatre the presentation took place in. The largest wig is about 3’ in diameter. I use backer rod, and weld it together with a heat gun.
This just popped up in my feed. Super cool. For all the drag queens out there... I'm so sorry people are trying to make y'all out to be something you're not. Please continue to be your authentic selves and don't let the bastards drag you down!❤ much love❤
Two years later but I'm so thankful for this video. The attention to detail on your work is insanely great. Greetings and blessings to everyone from Venezuela.
I enjoyed watching this video. I've seen some of the better known drag artists wearing these and had so many questions about the construction but i see that they are basically sculptures. I applaud you talent🙏. Please stay safe and be well.
Thank you very much thats lovely to say. Yes they are very much sculptures, I would also say there are many different ways to go about making one. This one was only my second and I myself am still figuring out what is the best way. A good tip for prop making is that theres no wrong way to make a prop 😁
She’s gorgeous! There’s a water based, odor free contact cement from Worthen Industries called, Worthen Formula 1812 (like the Overture!)! They don’t ship it in cold weather, and l don’t know if they have a distributor in Europe…I’m glad to see you wearing a respirator and gloves!
i saw this in the corner of my eye and just had to click on this, its so beautiful, you are very talented! the colors are so gorgeous, watching the process of videos like this are always so mesmerizing
WOW this is AMAZING!!! I wonder if it's possible to create a base of that spray foam and then glue hair on top of it? Or if it's just better in that scenario to invest in a hair cage? I have a wig that needs a crazy base (Fairy Godmother from Shrek 2) and this technique looks so good! Incredible work!
Yeah probably, but i was trying to keep some kind of organic feel to the shapes, and I didnt really plan out exactly how everything would look as I like to see where the materials take me. Plus its worn to be performed to an audience, never worry about the back of the Xmas tree kinda thing.
Nice. The back looks off tho. I would start on the right-hand side and go across the back to avoid that gap in the middle. It would be ok to have different lengths on the left side as they could be blended into the wave and the part.
They are closed cell neoprene rod. usually builders merchants have it? i got mine on ebay. its expensive and heavy so not the best, but is nice and smooth.
Woah idk how I got here maybe cause I watched that jubilee video but even though I have no interest in this stuff I can appreciate quality art and expression

Thank you for sharing this story! I find it so fascinating that foam wigs were invented out of necessity, and made from sustainably sourced materials.

What does it look like on? It’s great, but let’s see the overall effect.
Could doing the back, starting from the middle and working outwards help hide the odd shape that happens there?
Yeah probably, but i was trying to keep some kind of organic feel to the shapes, and I didnt really plan out exactly how everything would look as I like to see where the materials take me. Plus its worn to be performed to an audience, never worry about the back of the Xmas tree kinda thing.
@@mattiegriffiths Hehe. Well, I love what you do and could watch for hours. It's mesmerizing. Thanks for sharing your talent.
