  • What are the side effects of prostate cancer radiation? In this short video, Steven G. Lester, M.D., F.A.C.R.O., a board-certified radiation oncologist, at Central Florida Cancer Care Center describes how prostate cancer patients can plan for radiation treatment.
“Today we're discussing will you lose your hair with prostate radiation?” says Dr. Lester. “And the answer is no because we're not aiming at your head. You lose hair with radiation based on where we aim, and I don't think I've ever had a patient complain of losing a little bit of pubic hair.”
“What you want to know is what are the side effects of prostate radiation,” Dr. Lester continues. “And they're really pretty minimal. After a couple of weeks, you'll notice your gland is a little irritated which results in a little more frequent urination and some urgency. Part of the urgency with our process is that we always ask our patients to come in with their bladder full. Therefore, you're drinking more fluids than usual, and you're going to have to empty (your bladder) more often. We usually can manage the side effects with a medication like Flomax if it becomes too symptomatic.”
“You get some bowel irritation from radiation, but now with the newer techniques using an IMRT IGRT, we treat less rectum, so you have less bowel irritation. You will get a little bowel urgency. You don't get diarrhea from prostate radiation because we only treat about a two-inch segment of the front of the rectum. Fatigue is common, but that fatigue is usually pretty minimal. You might need a cat nap after the fourth or fifth week every afternoon. I find the patients who are really tired have better tolerance to treatments because they are not trying to work 40 hours a week.”
“So those are the main side effects one sees during treatment,” Dr. Lester concludes. “We're always available during therapy to see our patients on any day if some side effects should develop, but what you should know is that you can continue with a normal lifestyle during treatment.”

I chose HIFU (thermal ablation) instead of radiation. One treatment and done. I did the full gland ablation, which was possible since I had had TURP surgery years prior.

I’m peeing 20 times a day. Tamsolosin makes me feel like I’m going to pass out, so I can’t take it. Worried that incontinence is permanent. It’s been 1 week since brachytherapy and radiation therapy.

Sorry to hear. Thank you for letting us know. I had severe incontinence for two years after prostate surgery. Got a male sling installed and got lucky; it was a cure.

Not bad at all. What about the side effects after a year or two? I am trying to decide surgery vs ADT plus radiation. Have heard that radiation side effects can be substantial problem after a couple years. Thank you.

Yes, cancer is painful *but so is having this done and reaping the rewards of your doctor’s decision.

The radiotherapy was fine but hormonal injections have left a terrible side effect in that I have trouble with memory loss and small seizures (fits). This is nearly 5 years on, the lock down made it very difficult to see my GP only had one phone call off him and he told me there was nothing wrong with me and put the phone down on me. Recently had covid and if really took it out of me and then had a epileptic fit and and ended up in Hospital and now im been seen by a specialist. Thanks to covid it's got me help, considering changing doctors.

Low dose radiation, our two friends said they pooped and peed blood, their pelvic area, penis and testicles were blackened. The two guys said the treatments are nasty and ruined their sex lives. My husband is on watchful waiting. Are there any other things we can do besides radiation or non robotic RP?

The presentation ignores the second major type of prostate cancer radiation. It is called "seeds."
My treatment included the oncologist and the urologist injecting 44 small bits of radioactive iodine into my prostate. For several months I was carrying an invisible "bubble" of radiation around with me and it required me to take great care in the presence of children, pets and especially pregnant women.
This is the treatment that really triggered the worst side effects, especially rectal difficulty. It was six months following the treatment before my daily routine wasn't affected. A significant omission.

Sorry to hear that. Did you look into or not have the option for high dose radiation (HDR) Brachytherapy (which leaves no seeds) instead of the Low Dose Radiation (LDR) seed in plant Brachytherapy? I was looking into HDR Brachytherapy, but am instead starting Proton Beam Therapy soon

The difference between what the specialist says and what actually happens, as per the comments below, is why I said no to any 'conventional' treatment.

@@ari123621 I looked at what people do when conventional treatment ends[fails] and there seems to be no hope and went straight to what has saved so many 'lost' lives.
That meant that I sourced and took ivermectin 12mg, fenbendazole 500mg and artemisia[sweet wormwood]. 3 months later my PSA levels had fallen rather than increased and my doctor looked baffled but didn't ask what I had done and I didn't offer to enlighten him. What's the point because he is tied to the 'conventional' treatment that he encouraged me to have.
Cheap, safe and effective with zero side effects. Where have we all heard that before but in this case it's true and reading the terrible experiences of others below i'm so very glad that I did.

Sorry, but what you are saying is not the compete truth. I know because thanks to prostate cancer radiation I am now a cripple and I cannot go to a movie or even church as I cannot control bodily functions any longer. The process has done damage to several organs in my body. I got this treatment disease known as RC and cannot pee or poop normally or voluntarily. It is called RADIATION CYSTITIS and it is not curable. I just feel that people should hear the whole truth. So, people know the truth for the same reason, complete honesty. I had mine done in Akron Ohio not Florida. So, I am now wearing diapers and cleaning feces off myself daily as I have constant diarrhea and must use a catheter to pee. On a side interesting fact, the doctor got his full pay just as if everything went right. A computer repairman or mechanic would not have gotten full pay. Do not tell me to sue as it would not heal me and would only cost me time and more money. And I probably could not set in court with the damage I have that was done without warning. Be very careful, is all I am saying.

This video only talks about the short term issues.... radiation causes (in many cases) long term side effects impacting the bladder and rectum that appear years after treatment... and have a serious impact on your quality of life. There is no simple solution to prostate cancer.... you must weigh the treatments available and the serious long and short term side effects.
