    Thanks for the tips! A few weeks ago I purchased my first set! The GT Triple Power set. I love it. Modified the basement as much as possible but the space available is limited. I almost immediately ordered the Motodrom Racer set to get some banked curves, cars and extra track. They are R2. I had to modify the green Porsche a far bit to make it work. I wish I had more space! Anyways, your videos make me feel good about my purchase and motivates me to continue in the hobby. SmartRace is a must!

      Jesse, I will have the GT Triple Power set soon as well. Are you satisfied with the length of the track? How do you like the cars that came with the set? Can they stretch their legs (so to speak)? Do you have any plans to expand the layout? How much space would you say it takes up? According to the Carrera catalog, the layout is approximately 10.5 x 4.9 feet, is that accurate? Thanks, Thomas

      Size sounds right for a set... yes, I have already expanded to 65 feet on an 8x16 footprint. Much more long straights to stretch out! Yes, I like the cars!! Our favorite class thus far is box stock. Cars are "inexpensive" as well... we used to run HO, and the stock D132 Carrera cars are priced about the same as the newer HO cars (AFX).

    I just bought a new carrera set,basic 28 foot of track,I ordered more straights before I got the set,now there's cars coming from Germany,and boxes of more track. Banked corners/chicane/straights/1/4 straights/1/3 straights,etc,etc....and so it begins.........................I got the folding heavy duty plastic top tables,and just sat my ply wood 4' x 8' and underneath 2x4 supports on top of table,its rock solid..........I can even climb out on it to do what needs doing.

    I'm glad I watched this first,and kept the track off the floor...........I tried the hobby shop "grass" cheapo stuff as a bottom layer and it falls apart and gets into cars right away............... Very flimsy and cat used it as a scratch pad...........I agree on the mandatory cross over/ "crash" pieces of track..................I got one of the chicanes where the lanes run real close and I'm not wild about it...too much carnage in race conditions.............I do like the big high bank corner I got.........even for it I had to grind the rear/bottom of some GT style cars but that was easy. It seems like cars need to be geared lower for a small-ish track,I might try it...........the car really starts to pull hard right at end of straightaway............sticky silicone tires make all the difference.

    Very good video, I ama first time Carrera digital GT set newbie. I got my truck all set up and before we actually got the set I had bought the extra car and also the digital wireless controllers. Which really helped. Thank you for this information I was considering the Carrera app connect next, and you just confirmed it for me. Thanks again this really helps me out. Oh and by the way I set mine up on a bunch of tables in my front room to start out. LOL thanks for the tip.

    Also I have 1 single cool use for the cross-over lane. I made a double pit stop that starts with a pit entry and then expands again into 2 lanes (eventually I want to use another pit entry with the circuit boards swapped to make this expansion shorter). After the expansion, I have a pit stop adapter in the far lane, then the cross-over, and another pit stop adapter in the far lane. After that they just come back to join the main circuit with a 2-to-1 lane adapter and pit exit (I will probably make it 2 pit exits in a row as well). So this is the only reason why I would have a cross-over piece, and even then its more of just for the appearance factor of entering and exiting 2 separate pit boxes. The driver makes up his mind on what pit box he's going to with the 2nd lane expansion. I agree that I would never have it in the actual racing part of the track haha.

      I like that idea... I thought about doing something similar, but space is limited in the pit area (I am trying for more landscaping and less track, similar to what I had on my old HO layout.) We run first-in-first-out with little issue, and actually do a good job of not running into each other, lol
      Id love to see your layout!!

    Hello, I have a GT Triple Power set on lay-a-way at my local hobby store (thank god they offer that purchasing option). I just finished watching your “I have my Carrera D132 set... Now what??” and “New to Carrera” video series. Great information and very informative. I did find the setting up the pit lane video, particularly the pace car portion a bit confusing, however once I get my set up and running, hopefully I’ll figure it out. Since I won’t have my set until April, I have time to figure out where to set it up. I know you don’t recommend a carpeted floor, so I’m considering a semi-permanent layout in my garage or an extra bedroom (if my wife will let me convert it into a mancave). I’d love a basement set up, but we don’t have them here in Florida. Anyway thanks again for the informative videos.

      Hello and thank you. The pit lane is very easy, just remember to have at least a 1/3 straight section before the pit entrance so cars dont drift and miss the sensor.
      Almost everyone starts out on the floor as the Carrera track does take up space. Never have been a fan of carpet, but I started there as well. Some people carpet their tables, and again, I've never had luck using carpet.
      Florida?? I'm in the Atlanta area... Howdy neighbor, and I'm looking forward to your enjoyment with Carrera!! Welcome aboard, and we are here if you have any questions!!

      Atlanta and surrounding areas seem like a great place to live. I have close friends in the Dunwoody and Snellville areas. I haven’t made it up there in a few years though. I live near Tampa, and considered Atlanta as a living destination after retiring from a 25-year Air Force career, but ended up in Tampa instead. Your layout appears very fun and challenging, due to space constraints, I don’t envision anything close. Just a small to medium set up for personal enjoyment, but one can dream. Thanks again for the videos, I’m sure they will be a great reference for all Carrera Digital enthusiasts.

    There are so many other controllers,many not wireless. I got a Ramjet controller and got the 8' long extra cable with it.
    I much prefer not pushing with my thumb. I have the 2 finger trigger on my Ramjet and its good for me...........the carrera wireless controllers seem hard to get right now,and they tend to be pricey....to me they seem really cheap and kinda squeaky....but a lot of guys like em fine. The Ramjet is smooth and adjustable,smoother "throttle" feel when driving cars.

    • @slotcarmayhem9765

      Yes, I at looking at some of the aftermarket wireless controllers. I am still in the mode of making sure newbies can come visit and race without the expense of having to buy their own controller, until we have enough members who are willing to buy their own. You are correct, the aftermarket controllers are a huge improvement!!

  • @thomassanders2600

    Good evening. I will have my first Carrera digital set soon, in the meantime I've been watching
    loads of videos for track layout/expansion ideas, different types of cars to buy, etc. I have questions...
    1. Does the type of Carrera digital car one is racing on the same track make a difference when it comes to
    performance? For example, a DTM car vs. a classic American Muscle car or F1 car? (I assume they all have the same chassis and motor and are unmodified.)
    2. I’ve seen on RUclips where some custom tracks require additional power, how
    does one know when additional power is needed, what kind of power supply is needed, is it a Carrera power supply or an aftermarket power supply?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @slotcarmayhem9765
      @slotcarmayhem9765  3 года назад +1

      Let's see...
      1. Yes, cars differ in performance between types (F1 will outperform vintage NASCAR) for reasons of weight, center of gravity, etc.
      Cars of like type can differ to a degree as well, even 2 identical cars can differ. All are tunable though to minimize any differences. Motors are not all the same, most full body have the same motor, but the Porsche 917's and the F1's have a narrow motor and slightly different bearing.
      Car speeds can be set at the CU to help compensate. The odd thing is "old vs new" decoder chips... there are cars that have the"early new" chip that feels faster, but is not, just doesn't have a wide throttle response (feels almost on or off). Easily by adding a resistor, or chip can be replaced easily.
      2. Power supplies... currently (pun intended) I have 65 feet of track, with 5 lane change sections, 2 pit lanes, 4 wireless controllers (2 charging bases) and can run 8-10 cars without issue. We tend to restrict minimum laptimes (6.5 seconds for box stock) to keep speeds down. We have zero power issues, but I do have 8 power taps throughout the layout to minimize voltage drop buildup across track joints. The CU itself has an internal limit of 8 amps I believe, so running the hot motors that draw 5 amps is out regardless of power supply. A bigger power supply is NEVER a bad idea, and provides flexibility, but for modest home racing, I have found the stock one suitable.
      Hope that helps...

    Have you delved into analog to digital car conversion? I really like classic American Muscle Cars/Hot Rods, Carrera Digital 132 doesn’t have a big selection, Scalextric has a few. I was wondering if in your opinion, conversions were worth the time and expense. And does a conversion say for a Scalextric car offer the same functionality as a Carrera Digital 132 car? Your thoughts…

    • @slotcarmayhem9765
      @slotcarmayhem9765  3 года назад

      Conversion for a lot of scalextric should be easy... I believe its Carson that makes a drop in Carrera functional chip for Scalextric cars. I've haven't tried it yet, but will in the future. I believe the pace car function is the only thing missing on those.
      There are guide flags you can get as well that are a bit thicker, and are designed to work better on Carrera track as well, but lots of folks dont bother.
      Digitizing cars is something I am itching to get into myself, especially those Policar Modern F1's.
      Worse comes to worse, you should be able to fit a regular Carrera chip in most cars with a bit of creativity.

    I'm curious because I haven't found any. But what cars can actually run on an R1 Banked Curve?

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby 3 года назад +1

      Carrera will label their cars as what they DON'T run on, so if you go to a site that sells Carrera cars such as carreraslots.com and look in their inventory the descriptions for the cars will state the banking restrictions for that car.
      If it won't run on an R1 banked turn, it should state as such, but then should run on R2 or wider bank. If it states not for use on R2 bank, then it'll run R3 or R4 bank.

  • @Clearwater124
    @Clearwater124 3 года назад

    I rec'd an R1 banked curve set for Christmas. I run 1/24 cars at this time so of course I can't use this.
    My daughter's husband purchased it and I'm not going to tell them of the issue.
    Where they bought it charges shipping and by the time I pay shipping it would be more than the set if I were to return it and get something else.
    Can I use a single track piece, 1 R1 bank in other places in my layout, or 2 at a time?

    • @slotcarmayhem9765
      @slotcarmayhem9765  3 года назад

      I think one maybe 2 would work, assuming you could make the layout connect. Not sure about the 1/24, but the 1/32 cars can be modified slightly to work with the R1 banked curves. Let me know!!! I'm like you... if someone gifts me something I really can't use, I try to use it anyway, thank them, and keep quiet about it. Kudos!!

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby 3 года назад

      Put it on Ebay. You'll probably get MSRP for it, then buy an R2 or R3 bank. Chances are your son-in-law won't notice it's not what he got you (unless he has a Carrera track of his own). Most cars will run on an R2, and pretty much everything will run on R3 and R4.

    • @slotcarmayhem9765
      @slotcarmayhem9765  3 года назад +1

      I think they are both good. 124 is better for drifting, and 132 looks a lot better to me on the track (both use the same 124 track). The limits are 4 cars for 124 and 6 cars for 132 so thats what I decided on. There are a better selection of 124 cars as well, some bodies not available in 132. Overall, I chose the 132 because of car scale vs track scale, more driver controlled cars vs 124, and less expensive cars... important when getting a club to migrate from HO to a larger digital. The D132 cars are priced about the same as market HO cars, much less if we build the HO cars ourselves ($70 and up).
      Good luck and let us know!! Both are great!
