Mouse Hunt - Pest Control & Thermal Shooting with a 22LR Lithgow LA101

- I didn't think a specific mouse hunt with thermal was on the cards for me, EVER. But as you will see I certainly thinned a few pests out with the little Lithgow LA101 22LR running the Thermion XQ50 thermal rifle scope. If anything it was excellent shooting practice and a great first official hunt for my new 22LR. Some of you guys thought it entertaining that I shot a mouse with my 308win recently. Well I can assure you the 22LR shooting CCI Stingers at 1620fps had a better result with much less noise and cost.
I gain a lot of my private property access to do specific pest control for the owners. If they call for a little hand, I'll do what I can. After talking to the 72yr old farmer he has only seen a mouse plague like this 3 times in all his years. Certainly something I have not experienced. And I can only imagine how annoying it must be living out there. It was an odd thing with that many mice about, they are quite vocal in the paddocks at night chirping and squeeking at one another as they scurry around.
I very nearly called this video mouse masacre but though it was rough enough without that fanfare.

Interesting they don’t hide from the noise.
I would have expected you would need to be using “acorn” .22 to keep the sound down and limit the range.
They certainly scurry around when you shoot. But using thermal it's passive other than the noise.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
Ahh. That doesn’t show on the video.
Have you tried acorn .22 ?
I just looked them up. Have never even seen them in an Australian store. Very interesting little round indeed.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
Maybe in getting old.
When I was a kid and shooting we had acorns. About as powerful and loud as a slug gun.
We had shorts, full 40grain but about 550fps
We had longs, 40gr and subsonic,1000fps maybe.
And we had 22 long rifle.
Then came stingers,36gr long case.
The long case wouldn’t run in my gevarm.
That was in nsw in the 80’s
These videos are convincing me I NEED a night vision or thermal optic.
It's a great tool. Too bad thermal is bloody expensive
Go thermal. A night vision scope has limitations and downsides that thermal doesn't even register. It's expensive but you don't take your toys with you when you check out. Might as well enjoy the fruits of your labors.
I see your moving your thermal scope around different rifles. Do you need to zero it in each time or ones done and set?
It requires a zeroing for each rifle. The scope has 5 electronic profiles. Just select what one your running.
I am not sure they're legal for hunting here in the States, but the thermal is very nice -- will have to research.
They go from being a mouse on a bush to stuff on a bush.
those mice didn't stan a chance against the artillery shell of a .22
Love the work. Keep it up... 22 or 308 just love it. Anyone who dislikes the eradication has obviously NO idea of the damage caused by these pests.
if people dont like these clips why dont they watch a cooking show they are the real pests these days
Well this one is already demonetised unfortunately. Yet others are a green light. Strange happenings for sure.

That'll grow 😂
John mate, as a chef and fellow hunter - you are 101% bang on. Well said.
Yeah majority of response is positive though that matters more
You are a straight up guy with a clear ethical way of conducting what you have been engaged to do 10/10 nothing less can’t ask for more than that 👍
Thanks Geoff
I never saw a mouse go in so many directions! You are an amazing shot and you never disappoint a viewer.
Cheers mate
We shot hundreds, maybe thousands as kids in the 80's with break barrel air rifles and open sites, it was surprising how far out you could hit them with enough practice.
Feed sheds were full of them.
Great video, really enjoy your stuff, keep it up.
Thanks mate. The little break air rifles are an Aussie mainstay 👌
we also used slingshots, climbed under houses and beat them with sticks, for a bounty to the home owner. 1c/mouse. 1970 Blackwater QLD. bit of a plague at that time.
When I was a kid we had a barn that had collapsed and got infested with rats. We started off with pump up pellet rifles. 10 pumps wouldn’t faze some of them they were so huge. We moved up to .22 and it was a blast. Literally.
I love my Hatsan Mod125 .177 its perfect for small game and with right shot placement I could take small antelope size game here in South Africa of course using the Gamo Raptors
I noticed a significant difference between .22 airguns and .25 airguns on game. My .22 lr only comes out when a pump and a tin of pellets is less convenient than a brick of .22lr.
‘“That fox has got a bit of Claret on im”. 😂 Only an Aussie would get that.
Actually a Brit would get it too!
It's an expensive form of mouse control, an air rifle would be a lot more cost effective!
@@BOLLEFISK123 Not more cost effective if you don't own one, and don't shoot mice that often. I do agree with your point though
I'd love an FX Impact. Expensive though at about $3000 AUD and a long waiting list. 22 ammo is easier for something I little of 👌
and a saffer
Location Darwin, timeframe late 70's early 80's. Wet season. (strange things happen in wet season) Renting in a boarding house. Got sick of the rat that came in and did rat things in my room. So had my first beer at 8am (kinda normal up there at that time of year) carved "who dares wins" in my forehead and loaded my air rifle/slug gun and waited. Had another beer, and another... rat enters sees me and retreats. I get the bed sheet up as a blind and have another beer. Rat came out again and as I shot he turned. The slug went down the side of him and entered around the belly. Rat went berko jumping around my room, he took off and died at the entrance to his hole. Mission accomplished. True story, all but the carving into my forehead thing....

The .22 performed better in the visual aspect, half the reason why I have started watching your channel.
As you have mentioned many times before" this is a necessary course of action" and more eco friendly than poisoning
I had no idea a 22lr could do that level of damage even to small game. Another great pest control video. Keep up the good work.
.22 is so underrated. I collect most of my roos with it!
@@mitchellatkins7493 my uncle used to hunt pigs with a single shot bolt action 22. That's all he had
My very first rifle was a .22 long in NZ, amazing what you can drop with one, if you can aim straight.
Those mice have blue eyes one blew one way and the other blew the other way
Love your videos and I hope you continue doing this for many years to come
Really appreciate the kind week words Paul 👍
50 years ago a friend and I shot mice in his kitchen after we returned from the pub. They came from under his AGA cooker and we used a Diana .177 air rifle
So much fun I’m thinking this will be one of most favourites vids over the years to come. Top shooting too not a lot of room for error there 👌🏼
Cheers Joe
This is the best pest control video i have ever seen and I've seen thousands. Not sure how you keep a straight face . NEVER STOP!!
Thanks Stuart. Was certainly an interesting evening with LOTS of shooting.
Thanks Stuart. Was certainly an interesting evening with LOTS of shooting.
Absolutely love it. Pest control at its finest. Well produced content mate. Looking forward to your next episode
Cheers Louie. Appreciate the support. There's a bunch of similar flavour content up on the channel already if you liked this one. Not too many mice but plenty of others pests remedies in action 😁
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK yeah mate i absolutely love the .204 probably my favourite gun. Which is how I found your channel. All the infra-red and thermal scopes are wicked. Something I've always wanted to play with.
My sister lives next to grain farms and she too has a mice plague. They get into everything in the house.
Thank you.
Andy
I bet they do, I'd hate living in close proximity to them like that 😳
I would love to see more 22lr. My absolute favorite to shoot. Just got a CZ457 varmint & love it so far. Your videos are awesome ! Makes me miss our friends from NSW. Stay safe out there 🤘🏼
Another one of your entertaining video's. One of the best hunting channels on the net. Great work.
Cheers Kevin 👍
i bought a 10 shot CZ mag and haven't had a problem. love the vids and I'm 68. keep them coming.
This is the best thing i have seen in years.
I used to shoot mice with the .177 air rifle, but never with a .22 rimfire! The Lithgow looks like a great piece of kit too!
It's a fantastic little rifle. I own two LA101's now. This 22LR and my faithful 17HMR.
This looks like way more fun than it should be. That's it, instead of a new rifle in the next 12 months, im saving for a thermal scope.
Love ya vids mate.
Good job mate. Thoroughly enjoyed that, chuckling the whole time
Nice, glad you liked the video mate.
You are having way to much fun !!! Wish i could be there. Just ran across your channel a couple of weeks ago and I’ll rate as one of the very best pest control channels. Love to see the the invasive species explode. Keep up the great work. FYI a lot of the other channels spend to much time trying to get a head shot. To me thats boring. Your channel is like action packed. Have fun.
Bloody great shot, more humane what your doing than the old way back in our farming days .
You shoot like a freaking robot! Laser accurate, great shooting......I'm impressed, and love the pink mist, keep them vids coming
Certainly great practice Vern. Thanks for the support.
What I like is the skill involved. Top notch mate.
For all the haters who don’t like these types of videos get a life and don’t watch. No one is making you.
vegans...
I had a vegan once ask me what I felt when I shot an animal.. I replied RECOIL..
@@KrazyMitchAdventuresI had a vegan once, he was too fibrous.
@@Blindsyde5762 Maybe leave the jokes to those who know how to make them funny..
I couldn't stop laughing at the aftermath, mice with.22 hollow points, classic.
I know this video has been up for a long time but it is absolutely brilliant!
Cheers
Keep up the great work mate, love watching the thermal shots on the pigs
Cheers Evan
Good work mate very enjoyable as usual keep up the good work and nice shot with the fox at that range with the .22
Thanks Matty, Yeah that fox was a bit of a lob. Did the trick though.
That's a great shot with the stingers on the fox, I've been using them for years and find they can be a bit unpredictable at long range but deadly on foxes up to 50+ metres.
This has inspired me to re-think how pest eradication can and should be done...... Have fun saving the local environment...love it... cheers mate always good to watch your videos.....
That’s awesome, haven’t been out for a shot in years but after watching your vids I’m getting very keen again, Cheers 🇦🇺👍
That's great to hear. Get out there mate 👌
Nice shooting !!! It takes a great shot to be able to hit mice with any rifle, let alone a .22 Continued good luck with the pest control. Stay healthy and safe.
Thanks Chris
This was really satisfying to watch. Would love to do this some day. Great vid man.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK maybe I missed it but did you get a count for how many you got?
Man - you are a GREAT shot !!!
Awesome - thanks for showing us !!!
Wish I was there with ya !!!
Thanks Eric. Best I can do is drag you along on RUclips. Hopefully I'm getting better at portraying how things are in the bush hunting for us.
stingers and mini-mags are super rounds. great shooting, as always!
What a great way to improve your shooting. All about rounds down range. Great video mate thanks, go the Aussie content👍🏼
Appreciate it 👍
Well presented and good to see Aussie content.
Thanks mate
This is the first mouse hunt I have ever seen, looks like a lot of fun. So many of those little pests, I think an air rifle would also be a lot fun and cheaper too. Some good shooting, I need to watch it again. I don't I saw you miss, lol.
My kids and I love your videos, keep up the good work.
Awesome! Thank you!
loving it. get up them there are a serious amount around presently, we should all get in on it.forget big game lets go small game with high numbers.
I certainly enjoyed the evening. Glad you liked the video, yep get into em I say!!
Haha Lurve it, always wondered how a Mouse explodes. The 22 LR is an absolute ultimate small game round. I'd like to try my 17HMR on them too.. Great work..!!
By the look of that the little 22 does a stellar job mate excellent job Nathan top vid bro cheers Yogi 🤙🤙
That’s a first for me shooting mice with a 22,LR out of all your views you have 92 Mickey Mouse lovers, the weather looks great, why we are freezing are bollocks off in the UK -12 and snow ⛄️ great video mate keep them coming.
There's always some muppet that doesn't like hunting content. Stay warm mate 👌
In my humble opinion , Stingers are by far the best .22 round out there . in my 59 years on this planet they have been problem free , accurate , and the power is unmatched .
In Idaho we have "whistle pigs" or ground squirrels to everyone else. Just like the mice, they don't scatter when their buddy gets blown away. I could do this for a living.
We have them down in northern Nevada also, they are cannibals, shoot one and wait for his buddy to start chowing down, line em up.
Great video and it looks like a load of fun.
Another Quality Pest Erradiction Vid Mate.. Absolutely Incredible Accuracy and Super Funny, Very Entertaining
Much appreciated
I just love how the mouse just is splattered in all directions, and pieces get hung up in the bush.
Christmas decorations
😁
This was a treat! Want more please.
That was loads of fun. Love your style of video. Lots of action 👍
Thanks 👍
What a great night out. The .22 really splatters them 🐀💥
Keep up the good work👌
Cheers Matthew
Nice video, good to see Aussie made rifles be put to good use. Nice work. I sub'd.
That there is by far the most humane way to cull mice. INSTANT death.
outstanding!! well done from New Zealand...That sorts the buggers out..love it
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice shooting - I love the scope & how clear it is at night.
it's quite something when a mouse flies left AND right simultaneously!
Magic !!!
Howdy from Sacramento! I had to wait to stop laughing so I could write this. Too funny to see the meeses go pop. We use a pistol in the alfalfa fields to shoot mice while we daytime hunt for ground squirrels. Great fun! Thanks for sharing.
Pistol would be great fun. Oh I can envisage myself with a 22 pistol and a thermal scope on it 😍
Mate, I already paused it and thumbs up lol, I love your videos, bloody awesome setup and so precise. Satisfying watching pests meet their maker lol
Thanks man 👌 Appreciate it.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK I’m a chick but I forgive you 😂
😂 Damn, Awesome to see you on the channel 👌
Love the chanle mate, can't wait to see get to 10,000 subscribers, all the best 👍👍
Thanks Micky. Onwards and upwards we go. Has been a fun journey that's for sure.
Awesome shooting. Love it.
Fantastic work Nathan, thinned out a few rodents without the use of indiscriminate baits or poisons. Well done.
Cheers Leigh 👌
Way to go that's some incredible shooting. Props from Louisiana!
Cheers mate for dropping by on the channel 👌
that was AWESOME!! love the content bud, keep up the great work ................
Will do mate, cheers
I have 3 Lithgows, the old models. One, a Single shot, was given to my Grandfather when he was at Cowra during the war when he was in the home defence core. He went out after the outbreak rounding up the POW's with it. I have another single shot and a repeater. Simple, VERY accurate guns that have NEVER let me down. The CBC magazines fit them and with a little massaging with a file, work perfectly. My old Lithgow's are every bit as good as the expensive European 22's ... as a couple of mates have found out. Been laughed at the range till the indignant see what they can do and think they are tricked up or something. Dead stock except for the repeater which I had scope mounts cut into and the old guy I took it to whom loved them, gave the trigger and action the once over for me. Want to get one of the new ones like yours and now a Night scope to go mouse shooting. Great Vid. Can't get more effective or humane than the pests exploding when you hit them.
I've two LA101's. They are certainly worthy 👌. Sounds like you have a lot of history behind your tools.
Me: A german, sitting in front of his computer in the early morning with a coffee.
RUclips: Here watch some exploding mice on the other side of the planet.
Knew subscriber and great footage. That thermal riflescope is amazing shows every detail.
Thanks for the sub!
Love it mate. Reminds me of a job i did a couple of years ago.
327 grass hoppers in one night on a Damage mitigation permit. Now that's a plague.
Yeah they can certainly get thick too.
Literally vaporizers them absolutely love this video just recently got a Ruger 1022
The best Mouse kill I ever seen was where my wife shot one at 32 ft inside the house with a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun
That's wicked 😀
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK 👍
Man that looks like fun.. What a blast, and fairly cheap.. good job !!
Thanks 👍
Your videos are great I really enjoyed watching you shooting rabbits with the 308. This video is great that 22 does Great on those mice.
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video's. There's a bunch of other ones on my channel I reckon you'd like too 👌
Hi there nathen nice shooting once again I am really going to become a patron as I don't get any vids up to 2 to 3 ,4 days later and same with ahpc with Jase thanks Dennis from qld.
Thanks Dennis. I did a podcast with Jase last week 🤫. RUclips instantly demonetised this one unfortunately. Patreon support would be awesome. And depending on the tier level I'm sharing a bit more stuff slowly just on that platform.
This is gold. Like fireworks only better.
Looks a tonne of fun. Love it with the .22
Great shooting. I like how you ease the reticle onto the target in a smooth motion. Good discipline.
Thanks mate 👌
Seem like the feral cats aren't doing their job. If they'd eat only mice, they might be welcome.
Certainly right there. If only they didn't eat and kill all the natives the mice would be perfect prey for them.
Cats are out numbered lol 🐈🐀
For every mouse you see there is probably another thousand out there. Its like a
spoonful of sand out of the Sahara Desert
I don’t think the ants are even going to find a feed. Cool vid bud.
Just come across your vids by accident today looking for atv hunting set ups and I'm loving all ya stuff you upload great work
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoy it all 👍. Another ATV trip this Thursday coming up 🤞
That's gold mate😂 makes me want to go down the pet shop and grab a box full😂🤣🇦🇺
“Seem’s to work”...like tanking a Tank Round to the guts !...lol
That looks like a lot of fun.them lil guys pop like balloons
Absolutely shredding them mate! Great shooting 👍
Thanks Pat
Quality work as always and you cant please everyone so no worries about the uneducated ! 308 for me just but that 22 does atomise them . Great camera work and shooting bud. Keep it up
Thanks Shaun 🍻
I don't which I enjoy more, a splattering when you nail them or when you clip them and they fly and tumble.... love it, .308 on rabbits as well.
I had a look at quite a few that flew off the stalks after a hit. Even though the damage didn't show on the footage it certainly still tore them up regardless of the impact location. Glad you enjoyed it Marc 👌
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Correct, the speed at which they exited the stage indicates significant energy transfer. Any meat bag of any size which responds like that isn't getting up again.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Love the Lithgow LA 101 .22 LR as well. Bought one for my young fellow.

Never under estimate a good shooting 22✝️🇺🇸
Too right Jeff 👌
Oh that looks like so much fun. Great vid.
Thanks for watching!
Stumbled across this video. Love it the .22 is mint for mice. I’ll checking out your other videos
Thanks Dennis, enjoy. There's plenty of others on my channel to this type of flavour 😳. Appreciate the support 👌
This is utterly spectacular! I used to shoot mice with my BB gun from our family barn when I was a kid. I can only imagine the fun your'e having doing it at night with a thermal scope! Totally awesome! I'm curious as to how many mice you slew that night.
Thanks Seth. I'm not actually sure, Somewhere north of 350 mice.
That action cycling is the sexiest sound I've ever heard
Has a nice note doesn't it 😍
Pest control is vital - large, medium and small alike. Excellent work. S

This looks like so much fun and helps out the farm win win
