Mouse Hunt - Pest Control & Thermal Shooting with a 22LR Lithgow LA101

  • I didn't think a specific mouse hunt with thermal was on the cards for me, EVER. But as you will see I certainly thinned a few pests out with the little Lithgow LA101 22LR running the Thermion XQ50 thermal rifle scope. If anything it was excellent shooting practice and a great first official hunt for my new 22LR. Some of you guys thought it entertaining that I shot a mouse with my 308win recently. Well I can assure you the 22LR shooting CCI Stingers at 1620fps had a better result with much less noise and cost.
I gain a lot of my private property access to do specific pest control for the owners. If they call for a little hand, I'll do what I can. After talking to the 72yr old farmer he has only seen a mouse plague like this 3 times in all his years. Certainly something I have not experienced. And I can only imagine how annoying it must be living out there. It was an odd thing with that many mice about, they are quite vocal in the paddocks at night chirping and squeeking at one another as they scurry around.
I very nearly called this video mouse masacre but though it was rough enough without that fanfare.

Interesting they don’t hide from the noise.
I would have expected you would need to be using “acorn” .22 to keep the sound down and limit the range.

    • @EDGEoftheOUTBACK

They certainly scurry around when you shoot. But using thermal it's passive other than the noise.

      Maybe in getting old.
When I was a kid and shooting we had acorns. About as powerful and loud as a slug gun.
We had shorts, full 40grain but about 550fps
We had longs, 40gr and subsonic,1000fps maybe.
And we had 22 long rifle.
      Then came stingers,36gr long case.
The long case wouldn’t run in my gevarm.
That was in nsw in the 80’s

Location Darwin, timeframe late 70's early 80's. Wet season. (strange things happen in wet season) Renting in a boarding house. Got sick of the rat that came in and did rat things in my room. So had my first beer at 8am (kinda normal up there at that time of year) carved "who dares wins" in my forehead and loaded my air rifle/slug gun and waited. Had another beer, and another... rat enters sees me and retreats. I get the bed sheet up as a blind and have another beer. Rat came out again and as I shot he turned. The slug went down the side of him and entered around the belly. Rat went berko jumping around my room, he took off and died at the entrance to his hole. Mission accomplished. True story, all but the carving into my forehead thing....

I have 3 Lithgows, the old models. One, a Single shot, was given to my Grandfather when he was at Cowra during the war when he was in the home defence core. He went out after the outbreak rounding up the POW's with it. I have another single shot and a repeater. Simple, VERY accurate guns that have NEVER let me down. The CBC magazines fit them and with a little massaging with a file, work perfectly. My old Lithgow's are every bit as good as the expensive European 22's ... as a couple of mates have found out. Been laughed at the range till the indignant see what they can do and think they are tricked up or something. Dead stock except for the repeater which I had scope mounts cut into and the old guy I took it to whom loved them, gave the trigger and action the once over for me. Want to get one of the new ones like yours and now a Night scope to go mouse shooting. Great Vid. Can't get more effective or humane than the pests exploding when you hit them.

Certainly right there. If only they didn't eat and kill all the natives the mice would be perfect prey for them.

I had a look at quite a few that flew off the stalks after a hit. Even though the damage didn't show on the footage it certainly still tore them up regardless of the impact location. Glad you enjoyed it Marc 👌
