    I have owned my Rolex explorer 1016 for almost 31 years with one service in 2004.i was told by Rolex at that service that the watch should be serviced every 2 years,the watch has been off my wrist for approx 6 weeks in 31 years

      You are correct to do what you did. Rolex and all the other watch manufacturers only tell you to service frequently to get more money out of you.

    Since I retied early, I have been spending more time learning how to properly service movements and just completed my first full disassemble, clean and oil of a ETA 2846 which is consider a slightly lesser quality movement than the ETA 2824-2 with 21 jewels and 21,600 vs 28,800 BPH. Now for the Record, I am a huge Rolex fan but must say after having watched countless technical videos on ETA and Rolex movement service, aside from decoration vs a base grade ETA, I now really struggle with what Rolex charges. A fully serviced ETA 2824-2 can be every bit as accurate and long lasting as a Rolex movement except at 1/16th the price for replacement and 1/4th the prices for service.

    Never ever service a Rolex unless something is wrong. Then simply get a service at Rolex and the price includes parts. The only exception is vintage with special asthetics. In that case get a reputable independent aaRolex experienced watchmaker to do the work.

    My 2016 Explorer will be serviced after 5 years. It makes me feel good to know that any metallic dust from the wear-in period will be washed off. Fresh lubrication oil, new seals etc. If you have a mechanic’s mind, this is what you want I guess.

    What if you wait 15 years and and after this time they will say sorry we don’t have parts. Is there any official information how long Rolex services watches after purchase. 20, 30, 40 years? I am not sure but Seiko can support a watch only 10 years. Grand Seiko 30 years.

    • @watchsymposium

    There is a different on Rolex politic in the USA and Europe and I do not know in Asia. But Rolex does not recomment service every 10 years. They have said that in avage the watches they get in have not been to service for 10 years. When it comes to vintage then Klarlund in Denmark get you knew parts from 1950´s - 1960´s Rolex watches. Even a new dial if you want to. My 1601 datejust, from 1968, had service 3 years ago and got new inside parts, new crown and new crystal and then 2 years warenty. I would think that in the states Rolex USA might not want to service it or get new parts. If you only want to service your Rolex at a AD, then I would say let it run till it runs bad. Either bad powerreserve or it looses over 10 sec a day and it has not been service for 7 + years. I say that because Rolex at least in Europa has a fixed price for service that includes replacement of new parts. So whether these parts are replace or not, the price is the same. If you go to a non AD for serive I would get more often service so fewer pars needs to be replaced. So it is a matter of temperment and opinion. If you only wear the watch like 1 week a mounths, then the oil is bad after 10 years, so to wear it every day does only make the oil bad after 5 - 7 years. It is very hard to get a watch run witin +- 2 sec because it matters how you wear it. But it is easy to adjust the watch accuracy yourselves by laying it face down og face up or crown up or don at night. That way you can adjust accuracy. Otherwise if it means very much too me I would get a Grand Seiko Sping drive.

    What mods can we expect in 2020? Thinner lugs? New movements? New colours?

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  4 года назад

      My guess: New Sub with a 32XX movement. I have a feeling that those lugs are here to stay, but I would be thrilled if Rolex thinned them out. Though it would differentiate the new Subs from the earlier 6-digit Subs. I think Rolex is too conservative to give us more colors of the Sub, but I wouldn't be surprised if they discontinued the Hulk.

    Fellow Nob’s.....just buy ten Steinhart’s for the price of a Rolex or buy a few good fake Rollie’s....discard them when they go wonky. You’ll be long dead before they’ll need serviced. Do the math, ....$10,000/ watch....plus service....you gotta be kidding! Easy purchase a dozen good mechanical clones. It’s worth a try.

      Thanks for the heads up! I think now is the right time to buy an Batman. Once prices level off, and I can't see them ever selling for below MSRP, I think they will slowly go up in the coming years. Might be good to wait a bit though...because I suppose the could go even lower.

    Hi Austin, question, (your opinion). I have a new Tudor GMT that came in from Switzerland to my AD the week that Rolex closed. So, you always wonder who was left at COSC and the factory before they let the watch go at this time. All the hype and tests, reviews about accuracy show this watch runs fast at amazing +.6spd. I am getting on my left wrist for the day -2, and over night resting in the fastest position found +1. So I am about -1 per day. I have only run a week break in, because I do not go anywhere at present . Do you think that on the wrist at -2spd (before resting at night) is acceptable for this watch? Yes, it is well within COSC standards. What do you think?

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  4 года назад

      Hi Mark, It's certainly acceptable, but I know where you're coming from, because a slow watch drives me crazy. I'd give it a month, which is time enough for the date to cycle through one time, and see how it is after then.

    When pressure testing a case without a service wouldn’t it be wise to replace the gaskets first?

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  4 года назад

      Nah, that would happen during a service. They don't crack the case during a pressure check. But I understand what you are probably thinking; a failing test would mean water in the case. But that's not how they test it.
