    Agreed - wear the Sub and start saving for the 16710. Together with the Speedy they’ll make a very nice 3 watch collection.
    I don’t have a stainless Sub or 16710, but I DO have a modern all-black ceramic GMT and a neo-vintage Pepsi 16700.
    The modern watch is great for everyday wear. It’s been my daily for over a decade.
    My 16700 is extra minty. I baby it much more, even being mindful of sun exposure and potential fading of bezel or dial.
    In short, my advice would be similar. Start wearing the Sub and saving for a nice older GMT. There’s definitely room for both in the collection.

    I traded my ceramic Sub for a neo-vintage, minty Day Date 18238. Best trade I've ever made. If he hasn't worn his Sub in the 2 years he has owned it, then the answer is obvious - trade it for a minty 16710. The pre-ceramics wear a lot better. Cheers!

      @watchsymposium  12 дней назад +4

      That's a good point. If the Sub hasn't tempted him into wearing it for 2 years, it just might not be the watch for him. Something tells me that him pulling it out of the box and wearing may be a form of settling. And I'm no fan of settling, as it usually ends in regret.
      If it's been a struggle for him to resist wearing the watch, that one thing. If it's been a struggle for him to appreciate it, it's another.

    I feel the same way, having Tudor, Omega, IWC and Rolex. In the end, only a Rolex quenches that ‘thirst’. As much as I dislike the grey market and Rolex AD, it’s still one of the best choices. Omega and IWC etc are great watches, just didn’t work for me somehow.

  • @Saints-Forever

    I would suggest he try on the 16710 and compare the wearing comfort with the new sub. My personal experience is the new sub wear too bulky while as the gmt is so comfortable especially on a jubilee bracelet. Like Austin mentioned you can also switch the gmt to the oyster for a more tooly feel and looks. Having the various bezel insert options really make the difference especially if he doesn’t want too many expensive watches around but yet have the option to ‘switch up’ his ‘collection’ with the 16710. Not mentioning the fun of hunting for the genuine bezel inserts.

    I went to Nakano yesterday and saw several black bezel 16710’s! Not a lot of coke and the pepsi seemed the rarest. All are quite pricey though hovering around 1.8m yen. It seems like people have been buying them up 😄

  • @oddpout
    @oddpout 11 дней назад +1

    I think thats a great advice for him to wear the sub since it makes the most sense for his age. Also the sentimental value of being able to buy it brand new with his name on the papers. On another note, younger enthusiasts who like preceramics are in a bit of a difficult decision since Tudors are really the only brand left who does aluminum bezels 😅

    I'm just curious about why he is not wearing the Sub. I sincerely don't think you'll lose any money by wearing it. Do you really need the extra premium you'll get by not wearing it? I'd wear that thing. I have it and it's a great watch. I'm lucky to have a new ceramic Pepsi, but I'm also looking for a 5 digit model as well. I may come to Japan and ask Austin to help me. LOL. Hey Austin, I'm lucky enough to have all those watches Rolex, Omega & GS - The Sub is a keeper and wearer no matter what ! The 16710 GMT also a keeper but something you can buy any time there are so many available and getting cheaper the longer you wait to buy it, The Speedie also a keeper and a great watch, very cheap for an Icon - The GS is a novelty watch for me - I like it but don't love it like the Rolex ..............Time will deliver all your wishes so enjoy today and plan to buy your desire tomorrow.

    No contest between the new Sub and the older GMT, take the GMT. Rolex make 1.2 million watches a day these days and few hundred thousand of those will be Subs. They are therefore not rare at all and never will be. The pre-ceramic watches were not mass produced in the millions and so they will always be far rarer. If value is of no consideration at all then the Sub is for sure better built, but most people who work hard for their spare money care about value long term. Both watches will last a lifetime but the GMT will be far more valuable 25 years from now.

    • @ThriftyCHNR
      @ThriftyCHNR 12 дней назад +1

      the practical truth is that if you own 1 Rolex watch with a rotating bezel, you have them all. Doesn't matter if it is a diver or gmt, they aesthetically are the same thus a collection shouldn't have too many.

    The biggest problem with a black Rolex sub....EVERYBODY has one. If you love it, keep it. If you don't, a 16710 can be six Roli in one (3 Rolex bezels and 2 Rolex bracelets). Plus, in addition to being a GMT, it is water resistant to 300 feet.

No one needs a date with a dive watch. I have the current model Submariner. To be honest, I do, in many occations, want to replace it with a pre-ceramic Sub or GMT Master II. What prevents me from doing so is the lack of access to brick and mortar shops and I am not comfortable with doing such purchase online.
