We’re redoing our house. I started watching 4-6 videos for every project to figure out the best way. Now, I just search for That Kilted Guy. I know the instructions will be complete, understandable, and on point. Thank you!
Thank You so much this is why I keep coming back to YOU TUBE!!! I am a industrial electrician but all my family and friends want lights in the kitchen lights in the bath installed or moved. Most of the time I end up with a 6x6 patch. Over the years I have perfected everything but the know down texture. So it bothers me when I go over and visit enjoying the birthday or holidays having a good time and look up at the light I put in 8 10 years ago and I see that had line texture mess no one knows but me but it bugs the shit out of me!!! Perfect perfect tip!!! Thank You
Thank you for the tip, it came in handy for me! I'm working about an hour and a half from the house I had textured a whole house with a rented spray rig and I missed one little spot in the living room and this saved me from having to go home and get my Hopper and go through all that just for a 6 inch by 6 inch spot that wasn't noticed until it was painted.
Guy--your videos are awesome and very accessible even to a total novice like me. I'm embarrassed to admit how much time I have spent watching them recently. Anyway, you have given me hope that I might actually be able to repair the cracks in my wall--and then texture it--on my own. If I can pull this off, it will feel super empowering, and all thanks to you. Tomorrow is the "big day".
Little tip about the spray texture cans: Turn can upside down when done and spray until only air comes out. It clears out the mud that dries and usually clogs up the can.
My friend, I can't tell you how many videos of your I watch only to apply what I have learned to my home. Recently the wife and I purchased a Condo in Florida, it was a fixer upper but I knew I had help, via RUclips that is, anyways, I typed in what I needed guidance doing in my home and found some of your videos, I watched as I took notes, only to hit that thumbs up and subscribe button. Since that time, I have watched nearly every video of yours to do in my own home, so thank you from the bottom of my and my credit cards heart for all that you do for us lay persons. also, thank you for your service...
Nice . thank you for all of these lessons i have watched. I am a painter and offer drywall repairs with my service. It's great to find video like these. As i don't really hang it just fix holes with the prep before painting.
Thank you! I have to do the ceiling in the bath ( the drywallers have not come back to finish, it’s been 3weeks) The restore the ceiling corner…the large corner ceiling repair is now smooth, rest of it is popcorn. So I thought to smooth down the whole bath to look like your example here a flat texture.? That would be easy for me I think.I 70 but in good shape. I can be on a ladder. Yours is a blessing of a vid for me. Cause finding folks to work in the N Georgia mountains has been hard.
Nice. I like you no nonsense approach. I'm about to do the same thing with a dead can of wall texture (the thing is a flat soda). In desperation I found you. Great advice. Thank you!
Really good video......a great tip is to roll a little paint on the textured part because your need to paint anyway. Press the sponge lightly to that part and you’ll have a perfect impression of the texture to be matched.....pull away the clean part of sponge 🧽
I find it easy to change the look of the knockdown by varying the thickness of the mud you put on, how much mud you put on, how soon you knock it down etc.
The sponge combined with the Homax 7" knockdown knife worked perfect. For me just a tad bit of thinning regular joint compound and about 10 minutes setup time was just about right. I think it did a way better job then these overpriced aerosol cans and you have so much more control for blending. Thank you!!
Yes, this method works well on small repairs. I had a failure once on a larger repair but the mud I was using was too thin. I’m glad it helped you out. I have a handheld texture pump sprayer that I use on small jobs. Now I know I don't even need that on simple patches. No applying plastic for overspray. Great video!
I can't believe I just found you're video ! I have gone thru 4 bottles of the spray texture and I cannot ever empty out a whole can without it clogging up,very frustrating to say the very least ! Too expensive and I live 18 miles one way from the closest town , so I racked my brain trying to figure out a way to make a homemade way to do this and couldn't think of anything so I thought maybe someone on utube might know of a way and I was so lucky that you popped up immediately! I know I have one or two of those sponges in my garage and I'm going to try it right now ! Thankyou so very much for putting this info out there
This is really going to help me a lot, I bought a condo and the previous owner tried fixing his drywall and left a bunch of untextured patches all over the place. I'm going to have to fix all of his goof ups before I sell the condo and move up to a nicer place.
Man, I feel your pain. Bought a condo recently myself, in a 35 year old building. It's an odd mix of updated stuff with REALLY old stuff. Got my work cut out. So glad I found this channel.
Thanks for your great videos. I have a 12" x 24" ceiling patch (in a corner thankfully) and was trying to figure out if I needed the spray can or if I could just do it manually. This video was exactly what I needed. Keep up the great work!!
love it!!! Cant tell you how many times I've used a 1/4 can of spray texture on a small repair like a door knob that made its footprint in drywall and the next time I went to use it, its dead. I have returned so many 3/4 full cans back to Depot that wouldn't spray anymore . Frustrating when ur on a job doing a small repair and the spray texture can is dead but still full, LOL. Great video!!!
I've been using a sponge like that. What I did was took a large Dowell, 1-1/4" dia. about 3-1/2' long, cut a 2x4 about 3-1/2" long, Put a 1-1/4" hole in it. Then a Plywood scrap about 1/4" smaller than the Sponge, & Epoxy the 2x4 to the Plywood, & the Dowell into the hole in the 2x4. Staples also work good. Finally, round off the end of the Dowell handle & Epoxy the sponge to the Plywood. This works very good.
Just stumbled across this video trying to find a good video on where knockdown texture sponges were and I’m happy I found this instead! First time viewer here as well but I appreciate the share of this little trick of the trade! Definitely beats getting out the texture gun for a handful of small patches. The video also instilled quite a bit of confidence, keep it up!
Awesome Channel! Thanks for posting this video and sharing your knowledge!! I'm planning on doing the knock down texture on the ceilings of the 1940s house I'm working on.
If it doesn’t, scrape it off and try again with thicker or thinner mud, and less of it on the surface, etc. Sometimes experimentation is how I get to the final result.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY So nice of you to reply. I did try it. I have a very small space in the kitchen, hard to get to, mine was way too thick it looked really bad. I made it smooth. I'll try again today. Thank you for the encouragement.
Well I'm here to help. To thick means either the mud was to thick, our you put it on covering to much area (put less on the sponge), or you knocked it down to flat by knocking it down to soon or with to much pressure. A good idea is to practice on a scrap piece of rock. You can buy 2'x2' pieces at Lowes & I believe home Depot. Mannnnn....that looks so good! By the way my first time on your channel and i joined and like! I knew there have to be an easy way to texyture a small patch! Thank you sir!
Interesting to see small places done with a chewed up sponge…. Maybe I might make smaller bites into the sponge, as the drag makes it increase in size! Great job kilted guy!!!! Thx😊
Thanks, glad I could help you out 😎. And thanks for subscribing! Hey, thanks so much for commenting and for subscribing. With your help we can blast past 100,000 subscribers and more!
I found a good way to make knockdown printing spongs is to get the sponge damp and put it in the freezer. I then can generate a pattern of whatever size valleys I want in the frozen surface with a Dremel tool or whatever.
Just so you know, hot mud mostly hardens faster, but it does dry slightly faster due to the heat generated. But using a fan on any mud will make it dry faster and the higher the volume of the fan, the faster it dries. I carry around these 20 inch 6000 CFM fans for that reason.

I used a grout tool instead of a sponge. I also cut 3/8 diagonal cutouts using an exacto knife similar to your sponge. The handle on the grouting tool helped me apply the mud close to edges.
Thanks for the comment, and yes, you do need to practice first. You can practice on the wall, and if it does't work, just wipe or scrape it off, but you do risk damaging the repair so the best is to practice on an unfinished wall in a garage, or a scrap piece of sheetrock, or even go buy a 2'x2' piece of rock from Lowes or Homedepot. Great hack...no fumes in the house either. I'm actually a painter and that will blend just fine with a couple coats of paint. Thanks for the the tip...on a budget with a really old damaged ceiling right now.
Good video. I've done this and it definitely gets the "good enough" grade. I've even used rough rollers and a mixture of water and dry wall compound to do orange peel on entire walls. I bought a texturing sprayer, but between the mess and trouble of getting the texture right it just was not worth it for someone who only does this occasionally.
Ive actually been getting great results with this sponge for knockdown. As for spraying I get near perfect results that way but it takes understanding the parameters which i explain in this video. 🍊Spraying ORANGE PEEL TEXTURE. Learn the 🔐 SECRETS 🔐 only PROS know using this $30 Tool
Hi Frank Elizalde, and thank you for your reply. I truly appreciate it when my viewers comment on my videos. I hope you enjoyed the video and I look forward to seeing you on the next video. PS: was there any questions you have or any subjects you would like to see me cover in future videos?
So I have a small project going on and I used the spray can knock down texture and it did ok on the tray ceiling, but the spray can meant for ceiling texture sure does suck. I will be using the sponge trick. Thanks!
Yeah I’m not a fan of can texture. Glad i could help. Great idea about the sponge texture. I'm going to knockdown my entire garage ceiling, I'll be able to do it for the cost of mud and a sponge, thanks! (what's that like $12 plus paint? Yes please!)
I just released a video where I did a knockdown texture at the end. It was my biggest repair I've done with a sponge and it worked well, BUT, it is quite a bit slower, so I would guess it to take you an hour- 1 1/2 hours to do just the ceiling. But if you're on a budget, it will certainly work well.
I tried this yesterday on a small ceiling repair. Every time I tried to pull a chunk out of the sponge with my lineman's pliers they would just slip off. So, I used my needle nose and dug in deep! Then I slathered some mud on the sponge and went to work dabbing at the gyp board. It looked like stalactites hanging down from the ceiling. I should have taken a picture it was hilarious! I eventually got it looking halfway decent. Oh well, back to the drawing board...
Texturing is an art and it does take some experimentation with the thickness of the mud, how much you put on, how much you dab the sponge around etc. so keep experimenting and you will get it. It does sound like you had a little too much thick mud on your sponge though, LOL. Try using a little bit thinner mud, or a little bit less of it, or even dabbing it around more to spread it out further. Thanks for letting us know.
Another tip for making the sponge is the pliers need to have serrated grippers on the end. Some pliers have a smooth end and can’t grip the sponge enough to rip it.
I'll be honest... you don't give yourself credit on this because you're used to the big dog.. This looks fantastic! You know how rental homes look with handymen run though it doing handyman specials throughout the house. This texture in most homes even new homes that YOU did would blend in both ways. This is better than our home I'm renovating now. it has every texture known to man throughout the house LOL. There's one I call "Skip stipple" LOL. Yours looks great man! Go easy on yourself vet! Thank you for your valued services!
Thanks for the video. It helps and I am going to do it right now. I want to avoid the spray can I purchased. Thanks again for your videos my friend : )
Awesome video! I'm renovating a guest bathroom and need to texture the top of the wainscot walls and the ceiling. This is the exact texture that I want! My local go to pro won't be able to get me done for 2 - 3 weeks...so...I'm gonna try to do it myself. I hope that since I can lay the tile I can do this with some type of success. We'll soon see.....again.....thanks for the awesome video!
If you are going to texture very much, try thinning the mud down a little bit and putting it in something like a dishpan and dabbing the sponge into it instead of the way I showed on the video. Let me know how it goes.
Thanks for your video. Most of the time I have to repair small areas, like redoing the area above a shower enclosure. The sponge technique allows better detail work than the texture spray can, and is a lot cheaper.
i like to have a damp sponge with me when i trowel over the mud . i will moisen the trowel prior to dragging it across the semi dry mud instead of a dry trowel.
I followedcyour recommendation on a minor 3 x 4‘ Wallboard repair job. It worked out very well exactly like you said . After a long to dry for about 15 or 20 minutes I didn’t knock down and now you cannot tell the REPAIRED part from the original part Your instructions for demonstration worked out very well. Making the cuts in the sponge with a needle nose pliers I staggered them and hard lengths and spaces, Made it look like a piece of Swiss cheese and that really set a nice pattern on the wall board

Yup just like a spray paint can!
Yep. I also read the instructions on the can.
A better tip is not to buy texture in a can.

I'm planning on doing the knock down texture on the ceilings of the 1940s house I'm working on.
Great idea with the sponge. U just saved me money and a trip to lowes haha thanks a bunch!
You’re welcome
Thanks, didn't want to buy the expensive can for my small job, so this idea is perfect!
I enjoy your videos. I am tackling some spots around my 21 year old house that need attention. Followed your ceiling repair video now to the texture.
You’re a genius! I’m gonna try this right now. The cans here are $27!
Thank you! I have several small areas fix. Now I know what to do with that sponge I've been carrying around.
Date April 2023: adjusted for inflation, that sponge is now $27.98 plus sales tax. 😂
I believe you!! 😂
Update: 12/23/24 they have now added a payment program for the sponge. 29.99 a month for 6 months
Great video, gave me all the info I need to add texture back to a wall repair..thanks!
Im going to try this tomorrow. Youre right it sure beats cleaning up all that equipment. I hope my looks as good as yours does.

You're welcome!
Thank you, very informative. I am watching a lot of your videos.
Going to use this technique on a place on my ceiling that needs repaired. Thanks for the tip.
You're welcome.
Never had to repair a knockdown. Looks like it would be fun to try.
Thank you for serving and thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills. Something that is terrible to lose and waste.
Thank you, it was my honor, and I thank ALL other veterans and those currently serving for their service. 🇺🇸
Mannnnn....that looks so good! By the way my first time on your channel and i joined and like! I knew there have to be an easy way to texyture a small patch! Thank you sir!
Thank you! Looks like I have everything I need right here at home.
Interesting to see small places done with a chewed up sponge…. Maybe I might make smaller bites into the sponge, as the drag makes it increase in size! Great job kilted guy!!!! Thx😊
I was thinking the same.
Thank you, I just did a wall repair and tried the spray can texture and couldn't match the knock down. I am excited to try your this sponge process.
Thank you! I have small areas to fix but made a mess of the spray texture... you are a gem
Thanks, glad I could help you out 😎. And thanks for subscribing!
Hey, thanks so much for commenting and for subscribing. With your help we can blast past 100,000 subscribers and more!
Worked great! Had to sand it down a smidge to match.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
thanks, just saved me $20 on the Homax spray!
I found a good way to make knockdown printing spongs is to get the sponge damp and put it in the freezer. I then can generate a pattern of whatever size valleys I want in the frozen surface with a Dremel tool or whatever.
Works better than can. No bs
Thanks for your time.
Ps i used 5 min mudd. Painted in 15 min
Just so you know, hot mud mostly hardens faster, but it does dry slightly faster due to the heat generated. But using a fan on any mud will make it dry faster and the higher the volume of the fan, the faster it dries. I carry around these 20 inch 6000 CFM fans for that reason.
Thanks for the easy to follow video for texturing with a sponge.
You’re welcome.

This is fantastic. I've never thought to even try such a thing on a small patch.
Many thanks!
I used a grout tool instead of a sponge. I also cut 3/8 diagonal cutouts using an exacto knife similar to your sponge. The handle on the grouting tool helped me apply the mud close to edges.
Spray texture is expensive and drys up way to fast in the can. Totally agree there.
Good tip. . .handy and helpful to keep costs down
Thanks. Going to try tomorrow morning.
Cool. Let me know how it goes.
Thanks for the tips, and thank you for your service brother (Air Force Veteran also).
Thank you for your service as well.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I see you also live in Colorado...so do I...Greeley.
qualgen cool. I’m in Grand Junction
That’s amazing technics. Just need practice before into your project. Thanks for the tip sir. I love it.

Glad I could help.
just did a small series of screw holes & you are right about spray on !! Great idea, should have seen video first.
Next time it'll be easier!

Great tip - I'll be putting that one in the toolbox! Cheers!
Cool. Glad I could help.
Thank you ! I really learn from your presentations.
Hey you're a life saver, man! And thank you for your service btw. :)
Thank you!
So simple, so practical, as you present technique. Otherwise, this would be SO complicated & difficult to do. Thanks for the learning insight ! 👌

Exactly the information I needed! Great video and tip!
worked like a charm! Thanks for the help.
You’re welcome
Excellent information! Thanks!
This is very helpful. Thank you
I love this old man.
Edward Bozman why thank you.
Good, advice as always. Keep them coming
Thank you
I tried this yesterday on a small ceiling repair.
Simple and easy to follow if u were going to wait long to dry how long
Awesome tip, perfect for a little repair I’m gonna do
Cool. Let me know how it goes, OK?
Always great tips!
I use large 4-5" painting brush, and spray with brissels
I’ve never seen a thumb ring in the wild… thank you
Nice job.
It is good to find a alternative to the spray cans for small jobs thank you great job
+Luis Amezcua thanks. I'm glad you gained something from this video.
Thanks for the video. It helps and I am going to do it right now. I want to avoid the spray can I purchased. Thanks again for your videos my friend : )
Another fantastic informational instruction
Glad you enjoyed it
This for the quick videos. Keep ‘em coming Guy. Has anyone ever used stilts for cut in painting?
Yes
You are so respectful
Thanks for your service sir
Thanks for your video. Most of the time I have to repair small areas, like redoing the area above a shower enclosure. The sponge technique allows better detail work than the texture spray can, and is a lot cheaper.
Glad to help
i like to have a damp sponge with me when i trowel over the mud . i will moisen the trowel prior to dragging it across the semi dry mud instead of a dry trowel.
That does make it go smoother.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
You Sir Are God Sent!
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, you’re welcome.
Great solution, thank you
Glad it helped
Great tip for a part time handyman. Thanks
I break it out now and then and it's very handy. Thanks for stopping by.
