- That slick ride is Peterbilt’s new Model 589, the replacement for the 389, which the company will phase out at the end of the year.
There have been rumors for years that the 389 was going away. That rumor is finally true. It is, indeed, going away - rather making way for the 589 - a truck that looks almost exactly like it.
So what’s the difference? Mostly the cab size. The 389 featured a 1.9 meter cab where the 589 gets the new 2.1 meter cab.

I simply don’t understand the economics of getting rid of a model that they had huge waiting lists for.

I still drive a 359 b model and that new truck and new technology I can still run circles around it all day long
I'm glad Peterbilt put matching steps back on their trucks. The single windshield is going to take some getting used to.
I love the 389.
Wish the windshield was split like the 389 also wish it had gages on the dash instead of a screen display but other than those doesn't seem bad

The display is nothing but junk. I am driving a 2023 389. It freezes up all the time.
They put a POS PACCAR engine in a Pete hood. That's just WRONG!!!

Not an improvement over the 389. A definite downgrade, and that 579 cab is weird. All they needed to do was update the sleeper inside, but I guess it saves them from having to make two different cabs.

When the EPA allows the them to. If you have an issue with aftertreatment bs then I would buy the Cummins X15N(N stands for natural gas) in 2024 when it becomes available because EPA will not require Selective Catalytic Reduction or DPF on that engine so in conclusion no after-treatment bullshit. I plan on ordering a truck with that engine next year

I like it. Looks good. But miss the full array of analog gauges on the center dash and I don’t like daytime running lights.
Wouldn't have tow pins loosely nxt to batteries due to bouncing around & causing damage to batteries or electric short!!!!!!!

Honestly it grew on me. I know Peterbilt had to redesign because of the wonderful EPA standards, and I love how they kept what they could to make it still be a Peterbilt

I love how most people complaining about this are never gonna A buy a truck and B drive one.
The only thing that I do like is the cab room.
The EPA is not making Peterbilt do this. The greedy bean counter thinks we will pay the same as 389 prices for a 579 that has been out for years with 389 hood retrofit. The 389 was designed from front to back as a 389. A 579 looks great designed from front to back as a 579 and entirely different purpose for as a set back axle. It's all about having everything interchange. This hood was an after thought. To make more for shareholders per unit. My 2023 389 is averaging 7mpg with a paccar MX 13 18 speed 3.36. Emissions are met and there is no difference in mileage between the 579s or 389s. Peterbilt is listening to the same woke MBAs Sears & Roebuck did, Kmart and GM , Chrysler, Mack , Western Star and every other Corporation that went into CHAPTER 11.

I like this truck. Too bad Peterbilt didn't get this the 579 and 567 with the same cab width as the Cascadia. I also like the manual transmission better regardless of the engine on the Peterbilt but I like Detroit the best on the Cascadia

It’s sad what they are doing to the trucking industry they know the guys want that old school truck back that’s why they’re trying to make this new stuff appear more like the old ones. Just give the buyers the option to have the old cabs.

Getting rid of the 389 is the only way they will sell this fleet truck with a hood to owner operators.

Peterbilt kept the cleaners while Kenworth didn't. still, it's probably not going to even be 1 month after release before the classic headlights are available as a modification at truck shops. sadly for me, I would want the Engine the to be a Caterpillar, that, and I don't have CDL nor money for a truck
Only 3 batteries? I thought those used four 6-volt batteries. Maybe those are three 8-volt batteries?
Nope 12volt starter. Come standard with 3batteries but upgrade to 4 12volt for a nominal fee

A 579 with a hood and disappointing dash only 6 analog gauges and uneven sleeper windows what happened peterbilt.
ALSO, cannot put a custom steering wheel on and I HATE so-called smart wheels.
I love the new design of the truck. I wish Peterbilt would go just a little more have a big sleeper like a 90 inch with no fairings in the back behind the cab so we can still have a queen size bed on the bottom with a lot of storage underneath like a freightliner, Peterbilt is still slacking in the cabinet and storage department. They need to take some lessons from Kenworth Weston star and freightliner in that department then it would be the perfect cross country truck for a husband and wife are use my top bunk for all storage because I stay out many months at a time in the same with underneath the bed but like I said, Peterbilt cabinets are small compared to other makes and models and the same with under the bed storage otherwise I have always been a Peterbilt guy but I shouldn’t have to order a 300 or 310 inch wheelbase and have a
BOLT sleeper put on it just to get what I really need because honestly most trucks have about a 70 inch sleeper and then about 14 inches of fairings behind them why not just make it all sleeper for the extra room I’ve only been in this industry for 40 years take a hand from somebody that lives the life every day
Peterbilt needs to update the hood for the 567, the current hood is based on the older 579, give it a 579 New Gen look, and the 567 will be a cross between the 579 New Gen and the new 589
My 359 will still be on the road and that thing will be in the junkyard in four years just saying

Not bad. The dash sucks. Why do they have to build all these new trucks with a mini van cab. It's a work truck...AKA/ TRACTOR. I need mechanical gages, split windshield and butterfly side vent windows. Why can't we have a dash that opens up with a couple bolts made of metal and normal toggle switches???

The hood is okay but putting a 579 cab on a 389 body is a travesty they could have at least put a damn window divider on it

Narrow cabs are totally gone. The look of the sleeper behind wide cab is awful.
Nothing but a 567 with a different hood and some dressing up with accessories to make you THINK it is a 389 up dated!! I will stick with the W900L.

I've owned 359's, 379's, and 389's, ALL were comfortable to drive.

Looking a little less like a Peterbilt and more like every other truck. Windshield is more aerodynamic but not attractive and the same for the headlights.
