I think a big problem nowadays is that the people designing these trucks were not truck drivers themselves at one time. In my opinion, this makes a huge difference. I think PB changed what was once a nice truck into what it is today for one reason, TO SAVE MONEY. PERIOD!!!!. Quality be danmed.

Precisely; on the other hand, Kenworth is still keeping the W9 & T8 around despite the fact that they’re likely getting fined for making them.

As someone who worked at the Denton plant for over 16 years, they don’t give a rats ass what you think or want. It’s all about efficiency of production and maximizing profit. As far as the looks, their attitude is that you will grow to love it and embrace it, and unfortunately, history is in their favor on this one.

The old mechanical ones that are still on the road (not to mention those which have been parked for years and being resurrected) will be around for years. These new are all computerized and you'll need a loan on your mortgage for any repairs. With less owner operators on the road and often being asked to haul cheap freight and all the other issues will doom this truck.

Owner operators want individual gauges in the dash that can be replaced individually. Also on heavy equipment. Replaceable body panels. Replaceable glass in pieces. The split window design is cheaper and stiffer. Can replace either side that is cracked. Bolt in grill. Bolt on fenders. Less molded parts.

i was working towards a 389 to replace my 359 exhd but I couldn't find one available in the configuration I wanted and I didn't want to buy used so I went with a w900l and couldn't be happier. I'm sure Peterbilt knew they would lose customers but the cost savings on the 589 manufacturing will likely make up for it. That's too bad.

The EPA is placing certain requirements for the aerodynamic efficiency and minimum mileage requirements . Then there's also most likely a financial incentive for the parts to be the same or similar along the assembly line compared to peterbilt's other models.

The reason things are changing is economy. All the fuel mileage requirements now and more stringent future mileage laws. No old body flat nose truck can ever meet today's requirements. So, to stay in business, they have to start curving body panels. No old design will stay that all have to change. They don't have a choice.

What's sad is that In my 13 years on the Road (Most of which is Owner Operator) I have stood behind the Peterbilt name. Cummings Power Plants, Eaton Transmissions, and Reliable Paccar Chassis. I have relied on the dependability of the Peterbilt Name, and now, that changes. Progress does this. Innovation always gives way to risk. And Risk begats the creation of the unknown. This industry has long survived the troubles of the day on "Certainty" We are the Truckers of today because of the certainty of names like Peterbilt. Sadly, I have to admit I have converted to Detroit lately mainly due to the "Uncertainty" of the Subject matter in this video. It just looks slapped together. The only good thing it will really have going for it that I can give it credit for will be the room the 5 series cab will give.

Smart trucking love your channel. I live in uk but big fan of American trucks. I think the main thing that blows the proportions of the 589 is the deep windshield and side windows, flat hood trucks look better with small windows. If peterbilt could have some how had a curved windshield but still keep the windshield and side windows small I think it would look more attractive. The old mack b61 had a curved windshield with small windows and is a very good looking truck.

This is my thought Dave, but I am just a dumb old trucker. There was an interview of an old owner operator on Muthatrucker recently. I think he was right on the money when he said that TRUE O/O were done. Between the bad laws, regulations, and ever increasing fuel costs, most guys can’t make a profit anymore. So, who is going to take over the freight? The mega carriers. They won’t buy 389s. So, Peterbilt is doing what they can to sell trucks when the O/O are gone. Maybe a mega will buy 589s if it means they can get drivers after they sell their own trucks.

I am 39 years old.. I have 3 mid 90’s 379’s with cat engines. They run great. They look cool, and are easy to repair. I do not like the 589. A side from being ugly. They are not as rebuildable as the 389,379,359’s. The cabs are not rebuildable like to old trucks. You can’t reskin them. They will not hold there value.. It is a shame

  • @CJThePatriot702

I read an article and seen a video because I was curious myself. The classic 389 we love takes multiple people about 10 hours to make one cab. The not a fan of 589 can be rolled out by machines in about 2 hours for a cab. So my guess is quantity over quality. The CEO of Peterbilt said that the 589 will probably be the last of the long hood Peterbilt.

Finally someone saying these are trash. Why would you take such a good looking truck and ruin it. All that plastic interior no more wooden dash. Plus the door looks like it came from a car. Why can’t they just leave one classy rig in the manufacturing lineup? And all the other trucking RUclipsrs acting like they like it.. I know they probably truly don’t. Damn brown envelopes.
Plus when those fancy digital dash starts glitching it’s gonna be a shit show man. And it’s not like I don’t like changes the problem is this change is too drastic.
The 359 to 379 to 389 was very smooth in terms of exterior looks and nice classy interior with wood grain dash with full package analog gauges. Now the 589 is like adding a Tesla in the mix (not literally) but you get what I’m trying to say.
Just my opinion though, don’t kill me for it

  • @Los629

It seems manufactures are taking that route. Take a current model add things to it and it’s a new model even though you can tell it’s a current model. Freightliner/ Westernstar did that, Westernstar took the Cascadia body only changed the hood and added stacks to the side 57x, 49x and 47x

I’m not an owner operator, never was and with the prices so high and the rates so low probably never will . But I’ve driven all kinds of trucks in my 49 years of trucking and you guys and gals will most likely laugh at me when I mention my favorite trucks. No they’re not 359, 379 or 389 Pete’s but they were great to drive. No not the 04 W900L with the 475 Cat. No not the 75 Brockway or the 70 White 9000. No not the 73 White Freightliner cabover either. My favorites would be either a Mack R-model or the F-700 . Why??? I’ll tell you; if set up with an air ride cab, suspension and seat and a 350 E-6 hooked to the Mack 12 speed going into 3:90 rears on tall 22.5’s would be the perfect set up. Don’t forget the E-6 hp was advertised at the wheels. The perfect tractor for getting into tight places; a decent ride, an economical machine and when decked out with whatever shiny stuff is out there a pretty good looking ride. And if I could find one at a good price I just might buy one.

If the W990, a substantially different truck from the W900, is doing relatively decently, then I think the 589 will do a bit better, as it seems to have more positive reception. I personally think Pete should’ve given the 389 some “Lonestar-esque” treatment by keeping the cab, and restyling the front end to resemble some of their early models from the 1930s, which had rounded front ends for aerodynamics. Sadly, it was just cheaper for them to save money by utilizing the same cab as the 579; the 389 would’ve been the only model using the 1.9M cab if it was kept.

My opinion is... 359, 379, 389 only offered looks and feels. It looked traditional, and felt traditional. The only difference is cab and sleeper when it really comes down to the bare bones. The marketing team needs to understand this. O/O buy the look of the cab and sleeper. It's not a big market. But I fear they lost us. The 589 will be bought, but the will be cussed. All they did is lose their foothold. Now their is no difference between International, peterbilt, etc. All plastic crap traps.

Well it's kinda like what Ford did with the mustang. Each model year they had a different team come up with that particular model design for the up coming year. It took quite a few designs to absolutely fail before someone with a brain and some knowledge of what the classic mustang design and what it meant to finally pull their collective heads out of their asses to get it right.
Unlike Kenworth who all they did was reinvent the international eagle with their new W9 model Peterbilt has tried to stay somewhere close to the classic design but let engineers and designers who don't have a clue about what the classics mean or stand for take a crack at it.
Hopefully they'll figure it out and go back to what worked.
But in the end it won't matter because drivers who appreciate a classic design are aging out of the business and all the newer ones have never driven anything besides a sloped hood and don't know any better.
I never have trouble seeing where my truck is parked. I just look down the row of sloped hoods and see mine standing above the rest.

Guys that have bought and driven Peterbilts for 40 & 50 years are not the target market. Those guys are going be buying a casket before they buy another truck. Peterbilt is looking at the future market and they are right in doing so in order to survive as a company. The thing they missed though is replacing the steering wheel with a joystick since that’s what today’s new drivers are most familiar with.

I kind of think both the 579 and the W990 are only meant to have short production lifetimes ,it’s going to be a sneaky way of completely eliminating all long hood trucks in favor of aerodynamic curb sniffers, and I think it goes hand in hand with the eventual extinction of the owner operator.

  • @YouDriveUSuccess

The "hood" designs haven't changed much since the 1970's. The classic's are the lowest selling models for every manufacturer. Paccar sold less 389's in their entire production run starting in 2007 than Freightliner sells Cascadias each year. From a numbers perspective, it just doesn't make sense to keep the classic trucks in production. They are better suited for vocational use than on-road freight operations.

Well when the 379 came out the 359 drivers said it was horrible and when the 389 came out the 379 drivers said it was horrible so...

What made these trucks were the combination of the truck and engine. These long nose trucks with emission engines are not real long nose trucks. No different than a cascadia

    Let me break it down...
Fakerbuilt has created thier own version of the International 9000/9900 i Eagle and they have destroyed the class of that international by making it look like a fakerbuilt.
The International series had the classy interior with oldskool dash, it had a excellent cab.
389 and now 589 had nothing of that quality. The 389 is nothing that Peterbilt ever created... it's Paccar doing that Curbsnifferizing a real truck into what it has become.

They did nothing but take the 579 cab sleeper and just put the hood and air cleaner on it just like you said the thing that makes it look the worst is the one piece windshield without the cross brace in the center and everything on cab and sleeper is got a round and curve look and then you have no transmission into the square long hood and never will that hood and look go with a cab sleeper in one without the gap between the two

I Googled pictures of it. I had to send a picture of my gages of my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee to my brother. I said to him. Remember the good old days. I didn't like when the came out with the anteater design. They ruined the looks of real trucks then. Then. The automatic. They really ruined it then. Now EV. I had to use their technology with my 2020 F150 to drive the pickup on snow and ice. I just fixed it so I don't have to anymore. I changed the tires and the brand. The pickup handles now perfectly with normal mode and my driving skills. No, I don't like any new vehicles in 2021 and forward. I am old school. I like to be able to work on it and fix it myself.

I think it will sale. Just for the simple fact it's Peterbilt and resembles the other models. Once people get accustomed to it. But yeah I'm not a fan of them. But I don't really like any of the new model trucks personally 😂😂😂

I think this has more to do with emissions regulations than anything. Sure, engineers can argue it saves man hours on the production line, but again, that was a strong selling point for the 389. “It takes 40 man hours to make a single 389 cab.” Good! That’s quality you should stand behind. And quality I’d pay for.

I thought they were going to look funny..but after seeing a few of them here at the peterbilt place, they still look pretty good to me..except the windshield looks weird...as for it having the digital dash, the 2024 389 have a digital dash so that's nothing new

Then need to go back to long hoods and two piece windshield. I think they want to make the models so they all can use the same parts. Plus the designers are are not truck guys.
