If you ever want to learn how a video game is made, this video is the best reference you can find. Great depiction from start to finish of how video games are made. Shows everything that gets put into video games.
Lets all take a minute of appreciation to all the people who worked real hard to create games and stories that will forever live in our hearts thank you guys....YOU ROCK!!!
well, I am a game designer myself, don't forget, it said in the video you need to use programming, and it can take a while learn depending which programming langue you use, I use C# for instance, it take at least 6 months or a year to learn that langue, so it can take a few months to make a game, but I get your point kind of, :)
If you are interested, there are game camps in parts of the US(i don't know them all) but you should look them up. The basis of the camp I went to was to give a hands on experiance in designing a game. There are groups of 7 "campers" who work on concept, story, characters, and environments. each group works on their own game. you get to work with animation software and all the tools you need to make a fully functional game. there are prizes at the end of the camp(i think it's a week long).
Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time. lol I can't believe how few people recognize it. This is one of the best games for the PS2 console, and definitely in the top of best stories. POP for life!
I'm studying illustration/animation in college so I can one day have my own game studio. Hopefully someday I'll have a hit game out. Now if only "How It's Made" would do a segment on how comic books are made. Another field I would love to break into.
A studio like this rarely uses one program. typically it's called a "Pipeline" most studios in modern days use Zbrush, 3Ds Max, Maya, Photoshop, an in house Game Engine or something like Unreal 3, which also allows them to write code. As far as sound recording and editing goes, I know very little.
3D Studio Max is commercially available but on top of that many developer companies might use custom-made programs created by their programmers. Programs only meant to work with the games they're making.
This is why I study Digital Animation in Community College. I want to have my own animation/gaming company some day! I love Animation and Videogames! Prince of Persia is a great game!
@djlink111 we spend alot of time on everything so we do care, The programing is done after the art so we can build up around the art as a story. but I can see what you are saying, We do use max for almost all things as far as exporting and animating the rig. but the collision and all the other stuff is part of the programing.
@djlink111 no its not, It depends on who is making the game, We use all the tools we can to build the game elements. the .bips we use is from 3ds max, but we use milkshape to fix things here and there, Its a lighter tool to use for pollies.
that depends on what you are using, to put together a game, you need a Game SDK (Software Development kit) These are some below, Unity 3D (I use this one) CryEngine Unreal Engine (or UDK) and maybe a lot others, some people can even make there own Game SDKs I've seen
You can be sure a studio such as Ubisoft would use up to date software. They don't need LCD monitors to produce quality games. Plus, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was developed in 2003.
Hehe, when did that come out? Around the time Sands of Time was released? I like it when he says "the interactive game, on the other hand, is in low resolution because computers can't process hi-res images quickly enough". How times have changed.
i fucking love this show.. i don't know why i do, but i can't get enough of it, does anyone know if any stores ( not online) sell dvds of how its made?
@estesoyojajaja computer science is a big field that includes programming, the theory of computer science, databases, software engineering, math/logic/etc. programming is writing and designing code.
Depends on the mapping, rigging, engine systems that are being used, but yes; games are taking longer and longer to produce. I've been out of the scene for about 3 years now and thinking about getting back in.
@IcyFingerZ well yes, but its version 10 now, and there are tools to wright the code like dark basic pro and other well writen program's. But to make the player and the game guys they are using 3ds max. there are other programs for this to, milkshape and others.
obviously depends on the game. Many games take years to develop, although some are pushed out in months if it is a rushed title/licensed title/huge studio.
@quantumteknics its ideal to be good at both. brings a better overall quality graphicswise in regards to the game engine they are making the program for.
I LOVE Prince of Persia--I've grown up with it since the very first on Commodore! C:> A: A:> prince of persia Password: prince *game runs Sweet memories...Also, this must have been the alpha stage of the game--they still hadn't fleshed out everything for the textures, and the camera just followed rather than use cinematic angles.
If anyone here is interested in programming, start off with Game Maker or Game Salad.. They're easy to learn theory and their languages are also very easy to learn and efficient to use. Don't expect to make 3D games or online games right off the bat of course.
they use whatever programming language the game engine they are using allows them to use, for example; in unity you get to chose whether you use java or C++, other programs allows you to only use one language like blender (which lets you use python, btw). so unless we know what game engine they used to make it we won't know what scripting language they used
It depends on how you want it to work. Would periods through life be staged? or would it be a constant background process, always growing, too slowly to really see, using some sort of morphing timeline. What sort of AI would need to be present? The parents, the other present dangers. How realistic do you want it to be? how fine should the details be? How many variables? Would it be a simple health and hitpoints, or a full out simulated anatomy with possible localized and detailed afflictions?
I noticed they used 3Ds Max, im learning 3Ds max in a class too but not too good, i hope to work and be part of these gaming companies ^^, or for movies, or even military weapon/veichle designs
@toxicgospel Computers today still cant process hi-res models fast enough, games today uses low-poly (low-res) models with a shader called normal map that is nothing but a layer created from a high-poly version of the model that makes the model looks like it is a high-poly model but is not, high-poly modelling is only used in FX for movies and GCI (like pixar´s movies) movies.
Now a days, all you need to make a video game is: 1-To be a pretty good artist. 2-Learn to animate. 3-Be a pretty good musician. 4-Be good at math. 5-Have good memory. 6-Have the internets help. 7-Have time. That's it. With this you can make a professional looking game in a month.

thank you guys....YOU ROCK!!!
this is SOO much harder than it looks and takes so much dedication!
God that looks so fun. i couldn't do the programming but the art and the development of the characters and scenery looks bad ass. Nice.
I work in the game industry and I have to say this video is hilarious.
POP is the greatest game i have ever played, its nice to see how its made

I agree with you too, that game was amazing. That was my first PC game I ever got!
i love this show! i watch it alot.
Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time. lol I can't believe how few people recognize it. This is one of the best games for the PS2 console, and definitely in the top of best stories. POP for life!
I love this show! Im watching how they make bagpipes...so its confusing to pay attention to this and the TV... lol
WHAT AN AWESOME JOB!!
@djlink111 For this we would charge for depending on If we had the time. Are you looking for mesh modles or something for a game?
I'm studying illustration/animation in college so I can one day have my own game studio.
Hopefully someday I'll have a hit game out.

He sounds so enthusiastic.
lol 1:33. I kinda suck at the artistic aspects of games but am great at programming. Can't wait to get into the industry.
This is why I study Digital Animation in Community College.
I want to have my own animation/gaming company some day!
I love Animation and Videogames!
Prince of Persia is a great game!
I don't know whos job is harder, the artist who has to draw everything, or the animator who has to program everything.
@djlink111 we spend alot of time on everything so we do care, The programing is done after the art so we can build up around the art as a story. but I can see what you are saying, We do use max for almost all things as far as exporting and animating the rig. but the collision and all the other stuff is part of the programing.
At 1:07 they are using "Autodesk 3D StudioMax". I've been using it for a while and im still finding new options it is very indepth.
i wonder what programs they use?
@djlink111 no its not, It depends on who is making the game, We use all the tools we can to build the game elements. the .bips we use is from 3ds max, but we use milkshape to fix things here and there, Its a lighter tool to use for pollies.
these hi-res scenes now have the same polygon-count as normal games today :D
that depends on what you are using, to put together a game, you need a Game SDK (Software Development kit)
These are some below,
Unity 3D (I use this one)
CryEngine
Unreal Engine (or UDK)
and maybe a lot others, some people can even make there own Game SDKs I've seen
Yup 👍
my fav game of all time
:)
what software did they use to animate the characters?
so how long have you been working with them?
You can be sure a studio such as Ubisoft would use up to date software. They don't need LCD monitors to produce quality games.
Plus, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was developed in 2003.
That was such a good game.
3:43 After one year of computer science, I actually understand that. Okay, I have officially chosen to be a video game programmer.
woa, whats that game called
I actually came here because of it. Read about this game being featured on an episode of how it's made on the IMDB website..
What is that software... someone please tell me
Sands of Time. In my opinion, it is one of the best game ever made.
What kind of program do they use to make the code.If any of you know, all you need to do is tell me the name.
how long does it take 2 make 1 game?
there's multiple software used to make a video game. Which one are you talking about?
are they using a software? what software???
That tech is ancient now
EPIC UPSKIRT!!!!!
@estesoyojajaja computer science is a big field that includes programming, the theory of computer science, databases, software engineering, math/logic/etc. programming is writing and designing code.
The Artist have i easy. The programer's are the ones who have the hard work!
Depends on the mapping, rigging, engine systems that are being used, but yes; games are taking longer and longer to produce. I've been out of the scene for about 3 years now and thinking about getting back in.

Do the designer arist relize how amazing their drawings are :D
1:10 is that 3d max?
which is harder??? making a model, or programming the game????
what game are they making
I cannot believe how long it took me to figure out that they were making Prince of Persia.
@DannyWelchvid
The game in the video is called "Prince of Persia"
Is computer programming and computer science the same thing? I'm a little confuse :(
for tomb raider legend they keep claiming it took 6 months 2 make. is that a long time or is it short?
what video game are they making
It's hard, but I like making games anyway, keeps me busy
@quantumteknics its ideal to be good at both. brings a better overall quality graphicswise in regards to the game engine they are making the program for.
So thats how Prince of Persa was made, such a fun game.
Last seconds : "...and hope it becomes a hit." Ohh this one has...
1:34 hahaha lol very nice:)
I LOVE Prince of Persia--I've grown up with it since the very first on Commodore!
C:> A:
A:> prince of persia
Password: prince
*game runs
Sweet memories...Also, this must have been the alpha stage of the game--they still hadn't fleshed out everything for the textures, and the camera just followed rather than use cinematic angles.
wat game is that?
yup
i recognized it when they showed the initial drawings
A++ NOW I CAN MAKE MY OWN VIDEO GAMES
Cool!!
If anyone here is interested in programming, start off with Game Maker or Game Salad.. They're easy to learn theory and their languages are also very easy to learn and efficient to use. Don't expect to make 3D games or online games right off the bat of course.
what game is this
THAT'S why the cutscenes are always better in terms of graphics...
they use whatever programming language the game engine they are using allows them to use, for example; in unity you get to chose whether you use java or C++, other programs allows you to only use one language like blender (which lets you use python, btw).
so unless we know what game engine they used to make it we won't know what scripting language they used
good point
what game is this?
They might have a soundtrack, check the site.
It depends on how you want it to work.

i had this game on my ps2 and I completed it
that's so cool
This is making me wana make my game :D
and to think at one point in time i wanted to get into that field
The modeling software he was using was 3D Studio Max.
very nice
3:46 what language is that? not c neither C++, doesn't have semicolons on end and it has quite different syntax
You also have to realize that it takes about a year to make a game. And to condense it into a 4:30 clip is quite well.
@toxicgospel Computers today still cant process hi-res models fast enough, games today uses low-poly (low-res) models with a shader called normal map that is nothing but a layer created from a high-poly version of the model that makes the model looks like it is a high-poly model but is not, high-poly modelling is only used in FX for movies and GCI (like pixar´s movies) movies.
damn man! this i want to do for a living!
I feel like I'm watching "Walking With Dinosaurs."
@estesoyojajaja no. it's easy to learn the syntax for writing simple code. designing and implementing efficient and clean code is an art though.
what is this? year 1999?
Why is the screen so narrow? O.o

for tombraider is the engine used so they have to build the levels
now video games today are made MUCH MORE differently than in this video
Ha! I got this game for by b-day, but I was too used to playing Zelda, and kept pressing the wrong buttons. (Which lead to hilarious results!)
pretty interesting stuff.
we just finished level 3 and need to tighten up the graphics a little bit.
Believe it or not, I am already learning it in school.
Sure looks like it. I've never played it but I've seen my cousin play it so I really think it is! :D
