These vids make me miss driving a truck from 04 to 2012.
I ended up disabled and had to leave the road, but man, do I miss it.
Love the look of these old cabovers fixed up. Good luck with the motor, bud.
Also, word of advice to you, don't do too much and get burned out, or you'll regret it later, that's what led to me being disabled, and I ruined my body.

Good call on getting rid of low flow cooling system (Big Cam IV). While you are tearing the engine down, be sure to inspect EVERY lobe on the camshaft. If one is bad, they all are bad. If you end up replacing cam, you must replace the cam follower rocker boxes, which means that the the shim packs that determine injection timing will need to be redone. DO NOT REUSE THE OLD SHIM PACKS, THEY WILL NOT BE RIGHT!!! As others have advised, this is a procedure that requires special tools and goes much faster with someone who has done it before. Also, if the cam is replaced, re-time the follower boxes BEFORE you install the pistons and rods.
I sure don't envy you having to lay in the dirt outside working on the engine. Make sure you keep as much dirt out of the engine as possible. Best of luck to you!

Use a good size deep socket, roll the crank around until the socket is wedged between the throw of the crank (NOT THE JOURNAL!) and the bottom edge of the liner. Bump the starter and out comes the liner. Changed them on the side of the highway this way more than once. The liner tools are nice and make it easy but they’re big dollars if you plan on this being a one time thing.

Hey man i just wanna say that the main bearings in this particular cummins product(855 ci)have to be install a certain way.The lower bearing shell" CANNOT"be installed into the main cap.
It must clicked into the crankshaft then the cap installed after that.there is a ring that locks it in.
This is critical for bearing crush,if not done a failure will happen.
Also ther are three different width bearings, skinny on nos 2,4,6 fatter on 1,3,5 and a fatter shell on no 7.
I know it sounds steange but this is what cummins did on this engine right through to the N14.

Keep your rod caps with the rods they came off of together, the same goes for the main bearing caps. If you don't you may have problems getting the caps to match up and it may mess up your bearing tolerances, you should mark the caps if they are not marked. Take note of what side of the crank the thrust bearing is on. When you get the sleeves out make sure all O-ring grove are spotless. Also install cylinders without O-rings and check liner to deck height. Sometime you may have to swap cylinder liners around to get the right cylinder to deck height, some diesel engines even have shims to raise the liner height. Also when you polish the crank be-careful of getting dirt in the oil holes. Good Luck !!

  • @battleaxefabandmachine
    @battleaxefabandmachine 4 года назад

Make sure you look for erosion on the block where the liner flange sits. If the block needs cut you can get liners that are .040/.060 larger and thicker so shims are not needed. I also have a feeling that you are going to play with the rocker boxes. Keep in mind that the gaskets are also shims that set the valve and injection timing. Find an old guy expert.

one would think.. but it sure doesnt seem like it. at least have a folding table you could lay everything out in order with the rod caps matching exactly as they came off

      I was muttering "now refit the cap ... REFIT THE CAP ... R E F I T T H E C A P!!"
He didn't mark the caps before taking them off, handed each one to the Bro who then had no idea which way round he put it down. Just so damn frustrating seeing someone make basic errors. And even when he gets advised (like about that rear plate (Headache rack?) in the comments he just ignores it ... the lad is giving that truck a good go and she is looking good but dammit you need to KNOW what you are doing when you get to Cummins engines..

@@1chish fake it til u make it. Its sure to be fun to watch. Absolutely refit the rod cabs to their mated rod. No buffing, grinding, polishing whatsoever. These are mated and appear to be saw cut caps. The whole video had me screaming, dont do that!

  • @kylestone6279

Bruce if you will look on the back side of the bearings, you should find 4 numbers, that’s your date code “which will be the month & year” of when they were made, or possibly give you a close idea of the last time the engine was In-framed. Which you probably already know that lol.

You'll have to change radiator for high flow also excessary drive in front of compressor will probably have wear on bushings and cam support bearing in front cover on the camshaft will probably have some wear

With the main bearings wore down as low as they are you need to have the cam and crank turn

Ronald Cantwell I disagree just needs a polish unless you can feel an something on the crank with your eyes closed
