The troubles of hard water are so real thank you for talking about it I don't see enough people working hard water into their suggestions for hair and skin troubles. Moving to a city with hard water mixed with me using a 'natural soap' type shampoo has completely destroyed my scalp and hair. My skin and hair have never looked this way in my life before moving here. A hard water clarifying shampoo has been doing wonders for me now as well as going back to towel drying my hair to help get as much water off of it.
Yes I learnt that hard water does not go well with Aleppo soap which I use as natural schampoo , the soap bar. I get sticky hair residue and my hair is in knots My scalp started for the first time in my life start yo get itchy and I have flakes coming off that area. All due to the hard water it seems, because I read upon it as you did :)
My dermatologist told me to wash my hair several times a day and leave the dandruff shampoo on for 20 minutes. I'm not joking. I'm not exaggerating. I didn't misunderstand...I never went back. First of all who can wash their hair several times a day? Like, I have to work. Anyway I have to wash every single day and I still have dandruff and itchy scalp. But it's much worse if I don't wash daily. Doctors were no help. 🤷🏻♀️
Washing several times a day is crazy, but you ARE supposed to leave dandruff shampoo on for at least 5 minutes for the full effect. 20 is just a tad excessive though 😂.
Nizoral is the best to anti fungal anti dandruff treatment i have ever used. Use as directed on scalp. While you're waiting on the treatment to stay in your head, shampoo your actual hair strands as normal This is the only product that has ever worked for me. No more flakes! My dandruff was absolutely terrible and out of control. I would have flakes accumulating around the house and my things. It really was that bad.
I have to do it as well. Morning and night If I go to the gym or swimming I need to wash my hair. My hair is longer than 3 feet and I use salicylic acid shampoo. I am outside a lot sweating wearing hats. I wash my hats and use minimal haircare only what I absolutely need to. You are not alone. How's your scalp? Mine is doing so much better.
Nizoral did not work for my son bit what did was Herbal Essence new shampoos that font have all the bad stuff, it's the Eucalyptus one that is made for dandruff.
I directly use salicylic acid (meant for face) directly on my scalp. I let it sit one hour before I wash my hair. It's effective, my scalp is way less oily throughout the week.
I have been using 3-4 spoons of organic apple cider vinegar with the mother weekly on my scalp with half a cup of water before shampooing for 10 min …. No more flakes and I noticed less hair fall out
I've tried so many things, but have finally found a routine that works. Dove anti-dandruff twice a week has made my scalp so much better! My hair still gets oily after two days, but no itchiness and no flakes. Head and shoulders also worked somewhat before this, but dove seems to suit my hair and scalp much better.
Plumbers hate installing soft water, they say it messes up the pipes even more than hard water. Said they are not worth it. In Vegas we have hard water. 🤷🏻♀️
This happens to me every winter when the air is dry. Even tho I run a humidifier it doesn't help. So I use similar to what Dr Dray recommended. T Gel for dry itchy scalp with coal tar. But I buy Wal-Mart brand Equate which works just as well but less expensive. Use it x2 a wk, in between my regular shampoo. Works great!
@@kittymama45mine it’s that itchy or a little bit but everyone I’m done showering my scalp is literally white and called like the next day mostly white stuff I use Hawthorne shampoo but the dry scalp doesn’t go away I’ve had it for like 1 year
Dove shampoo and conditioner works good. Even if you get some hair fall from drandruff removal you get a huge boost in hair growth after or during sometimes.
Is it okay to use a clarifying shampoo for first shampoo then use dandruff shampoo afterward? Is stacking different shampoos like this defeating the first ones purpose? Thank you Dr Dray !
The K18 PEPTIDE PREP detox shampoo is a clarifying shampoo that has salicylic acid and claims to remove mineral buildup from hard water also. It is advertised as color safe but it's a bit pricy
i have straight but kind of wavy hair the reason i dont wash hair often or use any clarifying shampoo is that iam kinds scared that it will make my hair dry and frizzy, but i just couldn't bare the itch and buildup😭
For years my scalp often get inflammed and causing a headache as I cover my head & I wash my hair 2x/week (I know it's inflammed cause it hurts freaking bad even when I move my hair). Those symptoms appeared even the next day after hair wash day to the point that I was considering to wash my hair everyday. It's been several months since I learned about shampooing twice during hair wash day (the second shampoo only needs small amount) and that change my quality of life. Now I still wash my hair 2x/week using that method and even if I wash 1x/week I wont experience similar problem
Moving to NV wrecked my hair. And since we rent, we can't install a softener. And since i treat my hair with keratin, i cant use the super clarifying shampoos. Im stuck.
Does someone know a good (does not have to be budget but not crazy expensive either) clarifying shampoo tip for dry scalp? The OUAI Clarifying Shampoo made my scalp extremely dry so instead of improving my scalp condition it only became worse.
I’m not a dermatologist, but some people really can’t tolerate clarifying shampoos. This is a very odd recommendation, but I have a lot of hair ~that gets oily at the root and dry at the end~and once or twice a week I will do a really deep shampoo, then condition & finger comb my hair, then rinse and shampoo again. The double cleanse gets the build-up and oil off the scalp, and the intermediary conditioning prevents my hair from becoming overly dry. If that process doesn’t work sufficiently enough, I do recommend the living proof detox shampoo. Doesn’t seem to bother those with color, or cause the scalp to be uncomfortably dry when used a few times a month. *As a side note, I don’t have any issue with drugstore hair care products, but I would caution anyone about some of the lower end clarifying shampoos. They can be particularly harsh.
Hi Makenzie, thank you for being so kind to take the time to reply so thoroughly : ) I appreciate it a lot! Will definitely give it a go : ) @@makenziecely
I have a stubborn patch of mild dandruff above one ear. I started using a little spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol on it and that helps the flakes flake away easily. I feel it works for me but do you think this is a good idea?
I wash my hair once a week. I have long hair and don't use a lot of products. My hair really doesn't need to be washed more often and doing so would damage it.
Hard water are waters full with salt version of chemicals (not harmful ones ), the salt we consume (NACL) is just one of the many salts that exist, these arent harmful but can be somewhat stripping to the scalp and make hair frizzier than normal filtered water
Walking behind or passing someone who has dirty hair is not pleasant. Just because they can’t smell their dirty head doesn’t mean others can’t. It’s gross!
Hard to wash every single day when you have a professional career that requires you to work 12-18 hours a day and requires you to always look extremely presentable 😢 it’s very bad to sleep on wet hair apparently so I just can’t win 😂
🤨 people of color can't wash our hair everyday or it will fall out from excessive drying. We often go up to 2 weels without washing our hair it doesn't get oily we usually have to PUT oil in to seal in hydration or it gets dry and breaks suuper easy.
Not every hair type needs to be washed every day and it can actually be rather damaging. I have rather long hair and only have to wash it once a week. More than that would be completely unnecessary. I also don't use many products.

I love T-Sal. I use it 2-4x a month. It’s a reset for my scalp and hair.
Thanks, Doc !
I do too! That’s exactly what I was going to say! It really does work but don’t use it more than that because it’ll be too harsh on your hair.
You can use it twice a week
Does it help remove minerals from hard water too? Or do you still have to alternate between a chelating or clarifying shampoo?

My daughter used to get a thick yellow build up until I switched to a apple cider vinegar shampoo
